Weekly Report and Newsletter - 3rd November 2023 J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fell Pony and Mountain and Moorland Ponies. Saturday 28th October 2023.

North West Auctions were once again delighted to host the Annual Sale of Registered Fell Ponies on behalf of the Fell Pony Society.

The pre-sale show, kindly judged by Mrs C Wigley saw the Championship rosette awarded to Greenholme Quintessential, a black yearling colt by Greenholme Lancelot from Mrs C Fox and Mrs J Southwell, going on to sell for 1600gns. The Reserve Champion was Dalewin Zara, a black yearling filly by Lunesdale Black Ice from Mr and Mrs Edwin Winder of the Dalewin Stud, selling for 2,200gns.

A new trophy kindly donated by the Fell Pony Heritage Trust in memory of Isobel Potter to the highest priced colt foal was won by Mr GHB Mallinson with Hardendale Kingsman by Lunesdale Dixie who went on to sell for 2600gns.

The sale started with a bang as Lot 1, Holling Baby Anne, a quality 7 year old, ride and drive black mare sold for 6500 gns. Drybarrows Fordingdale, a 3 year old gelding by Banksgate Jupiter selling for 4800 gns and Lunesdale Richard II, a 3 year old licenced stallion sold for 2500 gns.

Top priced foal was a very smart, showy filly from AW Morland, Lunesdale Esther, selling for 2900 gns. Craig Mallinson sold Midtown Rebecca for 1600 gns, Dalewin Armani from E & H Winder sold for 1400 gns and Lyndarick Gracie from RG & L Potter sold for 1000 gns All foals sold averaged 604 gns with a clearance rate of 77%.

Following on from the Fell ponies was the sale of registered and part-bred mountain and moorland ponies which included the sale of 80 registered Shetland ponies.

The Dales pony section was topped by a mare and foal, Colliery Cinders III and Colliery Lizzie the last filly foal from the Collliery stud selling for 2800 gns from Mrs J Urwin. The Welsh section was topped by Autumns Rowan from k Cooper, a 4 year old, newly broken Section D gelding selling for 4200 gns, followed by Westfirle Red Knot from Megan Cookson, a 6 year old gelding who had already competed at the Royal International who went on to sell for 2300 gns. Mr CJ Anderson sold a very smart, showy 2 year old dun Section A filly at 2000gns and Mr A Halstead sold Butterscotch Bella, a 6 year old part bred Section A mare at 1900gns The large registered Shetland section was topped by a smart 3 year old licenced stallion, Hermits Inky Black from the renowned Hermits Stud who went on to sell for 2000gns. Selling for 1500 gns was Frobridge Samson, a piebald stallion from Mr A Halstead and also Hermits Bonnie, a 4 year old spotted Shetland from Mr R Grieveson.

Shetland foals topped at 1350gns for Talog Daisy May a miniature dun and white filly from AM Jones who also sold Talog White Fantasy, a miniature cremello filly for 1150gns, Talog Rambling Rose a piebald miniature filly at 1050gns and Talog Golden Rose1000gns.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep. Sale of Store Lambs, Monday 30th October 2023.

Prime Lambs A faster trade was seen at Lancaster Mart than first expected, with an overall averaged of 249p/kg achieved.

Heavy Suffolk lambs sold to £159 form TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. Beltex’s sold to £150 from AT Allcock, Inskip with Charolais selling to £150 from GS Lander, Warrington. Heavy continental bred lambs were regularly selling at £120 to £128, as long as they were full of meat. Handy weight and export type lambs saw a keen interest from all buyers, as long as they were full of meat with these selling at £108 to £115. Texel lambs sold to 282p/kg from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Beltex to 280p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan. A bigger show of hill lambs were forward, with heavy Masham lambs selling to £125 from T&D Wright, Roeburndale with Mules selling to £115.50 from R&HC Ayrton, Abbeystead and Lonks selling to £116 from S Bosworth, Burnley. 39kg Cheviot lambs sold to £100.50 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead.

Store Lambs More store lambs are needed each fortnight with many onlooking buyers leaving with empty trailers. A pen of Suffolks sold to £125 from PG Thornton, Scorton who sold other ring fulls to £103. Long term Texel x Cheviots sold to £83 from SE&J Gorst, Littledale. All store lambs forward averaged £97.

Prime Lambs 1400 lambs forward with trade being slightly sharper than expected, with the sale averaging 246p/kg. Less heavy lambs about today, with these adding up nicely. Texels sold to £150 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston with other Texels selling to £147 from Clark & Johnson, Windermere. Once again heavy Continental lambs were selling at £125 to £130. A larger offering of medium weight lambs saw these regularly selling at 255p/kg to 265p/kg or £108 to £115 per head. Beltex lambs sold to 300p/kg from CA Jennings, Selside with a full ring selling to 288p/kg for Texels from RT Colbear, Appleby and Beltexs selling to £132 from WS Burrow, Silverdale. More hill bred lambs are coming forward now, with Cheviot Mules selling to £119.50 from R&J Moorhouse, Lindal, Cheviots to £118 from MW Parsley, Roundthwaite and Mules to £115 twice form TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston and C Sayer, Longsleddale. Cast Sheep Another pleasing entry of 601 cull sheep sold to an improved trade, with heavy well fleshed sheep in the keenest demand and buyers requiring ewes fit not fat. Heavy pure ewes sold to £160 for Texels from GA Metcalfe, Kirkby Stephen with Charollais x achieving £146 from RJ Stott, Stainton with other first x heavy ewes £120 to £135.

Cheviot Mules sold to £122 from RHM&S Boyren, Colton with North Country Mules selling to £79 form J&E Nuttall, Old Hutton. Heavy Mules achieved £80 to £92, with a large number of mediums £78 to £85. Pure hill bred ewes sold to £108 for a Cheviot from WL&F Richards, Kirkby Stephen with others at £96 from JR Handley, Whinfell. Rough Fells sold to £76 from BJ Bainbridge, Shap with Swaledales to £70 from GJ&J Ibbotson, Roeburndale and Herdwicks to £61 from DW Potter, Shap. A large number of well-worn hill ewes forward were generally £30 to £45, depending on quality.

Cull rams sold to £150 for a Texel from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Other rams were generally £95 to £110, with hill tups selling to £70 for a Swaledale PT&L Edmondson, Kirkby In Furness.

Store Lambs Another pleasing entry of 5259 store lambs were forward with all selling to a faster trade than anticipated. The continuing wet weather and a little dip in prime lamb prices, did not put off our loyal buyers and new faces from appearing ring side.

The sale averaged £80.20, with just under half the sale being hill bred. The sale topped at £117.50 for Texels from W&J Penny, Kirkby In Furness with others selling to £110.50 from JB Jackson & Son, Grange over Sands and J Harrison, Broughton in Furness. Beltexs sold to £110 from L Beck, Heversham and £109 from A Prickett, Farlton. A further twenty one pens sold at over £100. Numerous pens of first cross Texel Mules and Suffolk Mules were regularly selling at £88 to £92. A strong pen of Cheviot lambs sold to £100.50 from BR Harrison, Staveley with a ring full of Mules selling to £98.50 form AW&AM Clarke, Windermere.

Other Mules sold to £96 from DJ&A Freeman, Windermere with a ring full selling to £95.50 from RI Dixon, Low Newton. Rough Fells sold to £76 from I&J Mallinson, Selside with Swaledales to selling to £66 from Forest Hall Farms, Selside and Herdwicks selling to £66 from Braestead Farms, Patterdale.

Limousin cross also achieved £345 from D&M Foster, Out Rawcliffe. Younger heifer calves sold to £310 for a Charolais from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock and British Blue cross selling to £295 from Pickervance Farms Ltd, Kirkham.

Native sired heifers sold to £240 for Aberdeen Angus cross from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack.

24 weaned calves saw Hereford cross sell to £555 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel with twelve week old Holstein Friesian sell to £320 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe.

Weaned heifers sold to £560 for Aberdeen Angus cross from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel who also sold British Blue cross at £500 and other Aberdeen Angus cross at £440.

Store Cattle Buyers were keen to secure all classes of store cattle, to keep the feeding shed full with well grown cattle in the keenest demand and those showing the effect of the recent weather trade perhaps a more cautious trade.

Steers sold to a top price of £1760 for a Limousin cross from JC Prickett, Mewith who sold others at £1740.

British Blue sold to £1700 from JM Haddow, Hincaster with other strong steers regularly selling at £1550 to £1700, to include Aberdeen Angus at £1600 from H Birkett & Son, Overton and £1590 from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton. Dairy bred steers sold to £1500 for a Fleckvieh from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe with Montbeliarde to £1400 from J Lamb, Glasson. Holstein Friesian sold to £1350 from GR Park & Son, Whinfell. All steers today averaged £1320.

All heifers forward averaged £1130, selling to a top of £1660 for a Charolais cross from JM Haddow, Hincaster with Salers selling to £1660 from AT Burrow, Gressingham and Aberdeen Angus cross to £1490 from T&E Garlick, Gressingham. Stronger well grown heifers were £1300 to £1450. Younger heifers to £1140 for 16 month old British Blue cross from Barker Farms, Cockerham and others at £1110 from AG&GM Rowlinson, Carnforth.

OTM Cattle 121 cull cows forward sold to a top of 219.5p/kg for a young British Blue cross from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham who also sold others at £1591. Other well bred beef cows were 188p/kg to 200p/kg, with medium type cows 150p/kg to 175p/kg, with many going for feeding. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale selling at 169.5p/kg with others at 164.5p/kg from JM Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor and CJ&HM Parry, Cockerham, A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel and Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth. A large number of lean to medium parlour type cows forward, generally selling at 120p/kg to 140p/kg, depending on quality and type. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from JM Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor achieving £1467.

OTM beef heifers sold to 264.5p/kg for Blonde from MJ Whitworth, Bolton le Sands with Limousin cross to 259.5p/kg from M&RW Strizaker, Milnthorpe and Aberdeen Angus cross to 234.5p/kg from J Bell, Wennington.

Top grossing beef heifer achieved £1500 for an Aberdeen Angus from J Bell, Wennington. Dairy heifers sold to 199.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from RW Bainbridge & Son, Whittington who sold others at £1218.

Steers sold to 259.5p/kg and £1440 for a Limousin cross from JC Prickett, Mewith.
