Weekly Report and Newsletter - 3rd September Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Spring Lambs and Cast Sheep - Monday 30th August 2021 PRIME LAMBS There was a reduced entry of 647 prime lambs forward, with less about due to the bank holiday but this had no effect on the trade. Good well finished lambs sold to a sharper improved trade this week. Heavy weight Texels took top spot this week selling to £140 from WJ & EA Woodhouse, Nateby, with other heavy weight Texels selling to £136 from S Bosworth, Burnley. Heavy weight Suffolks sold to £128 from WJ & EA Woodhouse, with others to £122 from Ivan Slater, Claughton on Brock. Plenty more pens of late 40kg lambs regularly sold between £112 and £120. Lancaster continue to have plenty of butcher buyers, looking to purchase well finished and good confirmation lambs with these frequently selling in excess of 250p/kg. This week peaked at 280p/kg from T&L Kirkham, Eccleston with others selling to £270p/kg from T&E Burrow, Slyne. Beltex lambs sold to a top £118 and £117 twice from PF Lee, Over Wyresdale. Mule lambs this week twice topped at £93 from RH & C Ayrton, Abbeystead and B & SE Carter, Ellel. Well meated lightweight lambs continued to be in strong demand, with leaner types making store price.

Mule ewes regularly selling around the £90 mark with buyers showing caution towards over fat sheep. Horned ewes sold to a top of £99 for Lonks from S Bosworth, Burnley with Dalesbred ewes selling to £66 from DM Eames, Abbeystead.

A smart run of Texel lambs from the Executors of DM Cardwell, Stalmine sold to £89, £88.50 and £88 three times. A consignment of Mule lambs from AC & K Pye, Abbeystead sold to £82.50 and £80. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Tuesday 31st August 2021 SPRING LAMBS The weekly sale of prime lambs had an entry of 1459 forward, selling to an overall market average of 229p/kg with the quality of lambs on offer mixed, well finished consignments gaining the financial benefits. Heavy weight lambs continued to be in strong demand at Junction 36, this week they peaked at £134 for Texels from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton, followed by other heavy weight Texels to £130 from J Stott, Crosscrake. Suffolk lambs peaked at £132 from JG &BJ Escolme, Killington, with other Suffolk lambs to £128 from WT Whittaker & Son, Nether Kellet, £127 from M&SM Robinson, Lowgill, £126 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston and £124 from DE & SM Moorehouse, Natland. Plenty of lambs weighting in the region of 50kg regularly selling around the £120 mark. Heavy weight Mules this week topped at £129 from Damien Wightman and Amy Mason, Milnthorpe. Standard weight commercial lambs saw well fleshed lambs selling regularly in excess of 230p/kg. Well finished light weight lambs continue to be in strong demand and eagerly bid for. This weeks sale included the ‘Belting Beltex’ pair of lambs, kindly supported by the Northern Beltex Club. The first prize rosette was awarded to Sally Jackson, Nook with her smashing pair of Beltex lambs selling to 300p/kg or £126 to the judge, Michael Lomax backing his judgement and purchasing the lambs. The second and third
prize rosette was awarded to Abigail Winn, Burneside, the second prize lambs at 38kg sold for £110 and third prize lambs at 43kg sold for £111. A bigger show of Mule ewes forward this week, which saw all keenly bid for and selling to a top of £113 from D Cottam, New Hutton. The best regularly sold well over the £100 mark, medium types full of meat were selling between £80 and £90. A lot more hill ewes forward today with Cheviots leading the way at £80 from HR & KA Hodgson, Barbon. A full pen of Rough Fell sold at £80 from AJ & JL Sandsom, Windermere. Swaledales peaked at £77 from HE Lister, Windermere, the best Swaledales today regularly sold in the eighties. Cast rams saw another strong trade at Junction 36 with Charollais selling to a top of £168 from RM&PM Simpson, Troutbeck. Herdwicks sold to £110 from JG Harryman, Harkshead. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle and Store Cattle - 2nd September 2021 CALVES AND STIRKS The fortnightly sale saw 102 calves forward, all calves sold to their full value once again at Junction 36 with strong well grown calves selling to a keen interest. JW & TE Sharp, Lyth once again topped the calf market at Junction 36 with a British Blue bull selling to £480, other British Blue bulls sold to £445 from B Mallinson & Son, Levens. All British Blue bulls forward averaged an impressive £380. FT & CE Hodgson, Pennington sold an impressive run of calves with Limousin bull calves to £425 and Simmentals from the same good home selling to £415. A young show of native bred bulls were forward with Angus’ selling to £305 from B Butterfield & Son, Burton in Kendal, others from the same home sold to £300 twice. All heifers sold to a sharp trade, with once again British Blues leading the way, selling to £400 from EW & RM Towers, Hornby. Other Blue heifers sold to £390 from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington. A big show of dairy bred bulls forward today which saw Fleckvieh sell to £250 from JM & IM Wilson, Whitbeck, this good home also sold Montbeliarde to £235. A young show of Black and Whites forward sold to a top of £105 from J Scott & Co, Cark in Cartmel. Medium type rearing Black and Whites were regularly selling at the £60-£70 with an overall average of £75 for all forward. A nice show of 80 stirks forward with a full ring side of buyers in attendance, insuring all stirks were sold to their full value. Friesian stirks led the way today selling to £830 from TK Robinson, Old Hutton who also sold a full pen of British Blue bullocks to £760. A nice run of Limousin bulls from R Eshborn, Glasson Dock sold to £760 at just 5 months old. Native bred stirks were eagerly bid for once again at Junction 36 with Angus bullocks selling to £740 from R Lawson & Son, Burton in Kendal. STORE CATTLE Another fast and competitive trade was seen for all classes of store cattle with vendors leaving suited with the prices achieved. Steers sold to a top price of £1285 for a pair of Lim X from MA & JA Whinn, Burneside closely followed by J Twigge, Lindale selling Char X, AA X and Sim X at £1230. Plenty of steers £1050-£1200 to include Montebeliardes at £1090. Yearling steers sold to £975 from A Thompson, Carnforth with Cha X at £945 from I R Cooper, Penrith. Heifers sold to £1235 for a Lim X from MA & JA Whinn, Burneside with a run of Lim X and AA X from J Hayton & Sons, Barrow in Furness selling to £1205. Stronger heifers regularly selling to £1050-£1150 with yearlings selling £1070 for a Cha X from I Dobson, Hincaster with other well bred sorts £880-£1000. BEEF BREEDING CATTLE The monthly sale of beef breeding cattle sold to a fast trade from start to finish, the herd dispersal of Limousin and British Blue cows with calves at foot from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale topped the trade selling to £1720. This run of mainly older cows also sold to £1650, £1580 and £1550 with this run averaged £1537.50. The next sale of breeding cattle is on 30th September.

Continental bull calves led the way in Lancaster with British Blue bulls selling to £450 from J Hoggarth & Son, Slyne. Charolais calves always meet plenty of demand in Lancaster with bull calves from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale selling to £450 and heifers from the same home to £405, £390 and £385. Four-week-old Charolais bull calves from RT Halhead, Cockerham twice sold to £420. Plenty of continental bull and heifer calves continue to sell easily over the £300 mark. The native calf trade today in Lancaster saw Hereford bulls sell to £390 and £360 from Drinkall Bros, with a younger offering of Angus bull calves today selling to £340 from CJ & MH Parry, Cockerham. Dairy Bull calves peaked at £285 for Montbeliardes from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with others twice selling to £275. The cast cow ring at Lancaster continues to offer a very strong trade for cast heifers, bulls and steers. Cast Angus heifers led the way selling to 207.5p/kg from C Hargreaves & Son, Overton with others from the same home to 199.5p/kg, with this price for Angus heifers also matched by M&C Greenwood, Middleton. Plenty more OTM heifers regularly selling around the 190p/kg mark. OTM Black and White heifers twice sold to 184.5p/kg topping at £1160 from EW & RM Towers, Hornby.
