Prime Hoggs A larger show with 700 prime hoggs were forward, which saw a strong demand for all types and a pleasing average of 281p/kg achieved. Texels sold to a top of £163 from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby with Beltexs selling to £154 from AG Butler, Hambleton. Heavy Continental bred hoggs were regularly selling at £145 to £150. A nice show of better bred hoggs were forward, with the best seeing Texels to 330p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan with Dutch Spotted selling to 325p/kg from I Richardson, Catford with numerous pens at 310p/kg plus. Medium weighted lambs sold to a flying trade with 44kg Texels to £140 from KA Purtill, Wigan with P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley achieving the same price. Over half todays sale would be upland bred hoggs which saw Cheviots to £149 from P Prickett, Hutton Roof with others to £141 from A&J Smith, Ingleton. Mule saw a top of £134 from AG Butler, Hambleton with other pens of Mules to £121 for 45kg hoggs from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead. Dalesbred sold to £110 for 39kg hoggs from S&J France, Over Wyresdale. J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 30th January 2024. Prime Hoggs Just over 1000 hoggs sold to a pleasing average of 286p/kg, with well over half the sale being hill bred hoggs. Heavy hoggs were keenly bid for by our ring side of ten active buyers, with top price being a Charollais selling to £172 from AW Crowe, Witherslack. Pens of Texels sold to £170 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale who sold other pens to £169. Charollais sold to £164 from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite and pens of Suffolks sold to the same price from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Best bred hoggs saw Beltexs to 341p/kg from RF Morphet, Halton with many selling at 325p/kg to 335p/kg. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviots to £168 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston, who sold other pens to £152 from the same home. All Mule hoggs sold to a sharp trade with a top price of £143 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale who sold Mashams to £141 and pens of 45kg Mules hoggs to £129. Horned lambs saw Scotch Black Faces to £126 from AW&D Brown, Pennington with a pen of thirty Scotch at 41kg selling to £115.50 from B&JI Williams & Son, Ravenstonedale. Calves & Weanlings Rearing bull calves sold to £460 for a Charolais cross from JT&B Fox, Quernmore with a large proportion of younger bull calves generally £280 to £330. JT&B Fox, Quernmore also sold an Aberdeen Angus to £330. Stronger reared bull calves sold to £580 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham who sold others at £570 and £540. Twelve week old British Blue cross bulls sold to £510 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Dairy bulls sold to £145 for a Holstein Friesian from JT&B Fox, Quernmore with others regularly £80 to £120. Store Cattle Another fast trade was seen for store cattle, with all classes and types well ahead of sales earlier in the week. Customers are encouraged to enter cattle with confidence and take advantage of the good trade. Steers sold to a top of £1860 on two occasions for a Beef Shorthorn cross from EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine and a Charolais cross from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland. Limousins sold to £1800 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham. Charolais cross sold to £1770 from GT&CA Blezard, Conder Green who also sold British Blue cross at £1720. OTM Cattle A large show of 157 cull and OTM cattle saw all cows forward average 169p/kg with OTM and clean cattle averaging 241p/kg. Beef cows sold to a top price of 259.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from RHM&S Boyren, Colton who sold others at 249.5p/kg. Better end been cows were regularly 220p/kg to 245p/kg. A keen interest in beef cows suitable for finishing, were generally 185p/kg to 210p/kg. Top grossing was a Limousin from G&P Middleton, Sedbergh achieving £1631, with others at £1629 from Mason & Gardner, Ingleton and £1610 from T&M Halhead, Carnforth. Young dairy cows sold to 219p/kg from Wannops Farm, Morecambe. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were 180p/kg to 195p/kg, mediums 155p/kg and 170p/kg and leaner parlour types 135p/kg to 145p/kg.
