The editor in chief’s word

EDITOR LETTER We live in a special time - a period of transformation. War has come to our house. But as history shows, any crisis is an impetus for progress. An opportunity to review our values, beliefs and principles. The current situation faced by our generation exposes the thin and fragile, giving the opportunity to become stronger. Just as fire and water temper steel, changing the crystal lattice of matter, so a person changes at the inner level. They say bad times become good memories. Having filled the issue with interesting content, we are gradually making changes to the design of the Home and Interior magazine itself. This issue is special in every way and from every angle. Therefore, we wish you, as well as ourselves, to keep up with the times, be open to innovations and fill life with bright colors. «Everything will be Ukraine» Chief Editor of the magazine House and Interior. Interview

VICTORIA OSKILKO

FOUNDER AND CHIEF ARCHITECT MONO ARCHITECTS

How did your path in architecture and design begin? When did the conscious desire to create come? We always had a lot of literature about fine arts in our house. As a child, I was seriously fond of drawing and at first even dreamed of a career as an artist. I remember when dad brought home a wall calendar with Kandinsky’s works, I looked at them with my mouth open and thought: «Lord, how wonderful it is ...». It seems that this was exactly the moment when I finally fell in love with the form, with the geometry. My talent as a designer manifested itself when two or three times a year I completely changed the arrangement of furniture in our apartment. Parents were returning home from work and saw that they now live in another room. It was necessary to do something with this, and the decision to enter the Faculty of Architecture at Kyiv National University of Civil Engineering and Architecture was the only correct one. To get from the Physics and Mathematics Lyceum straight into the creative environment was an incredible happiness. The first courses I studied literally in one gulp, drawing 50 variants of sketches on clauses. What attracts you in being a designer? Creating new worlds. Each one is always different. This is one of those professions where the result of the work is clearly visible. What do you think the ideal relationship between a client and a designer looks like? Who is the ideal customer? For the majority, the ideal customer is the one who trusts 100 percent, is in no hurry, has an unlimited budget. But I do not share this opinion. Brilliant things are created in difficult limited conditions. Communication with the customer each time gives a new experience. The ability to work with complex customers is an invaluable experience and a lot of opportunities to acquire new skills. Who was your teacher, mental inspirer, whom did you look up to when creating your first works? As a student, I was inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Tadao Ando, Walter Gropius (founder of the Bauhaus) and other minimalists. Architecture is a world dominated by men. Architect Zaha Hadid climbed to the top and gave hope to women that our voice would also be heard. She motivated me, and it was sad for me to hear that she’s not working anymore in 2016. Now I am a fan of the work of BIG and Foster & Partners.

What is the place of self-education and self-improvement in your professional activity? I am what can be called a perpetual student. We are lucky to live in an era when a huge cluster of knowledge exists in the public domain. Online resources Coursera and MasterClass provide an opportunity to listen to lectures by top Western professionals. A great passion for me has become the topic of innovation, the study of future development trends in all major areas of our lives, from space to automotive industry and medicine. It is important to understand where our world is heading and where our children will live. I am a multiple participant of SINGULARITY UNIVERSITY WORLD SUMMIT, which brings together futurists from all over the world and takes place in San Francisco. Every time I return from there, I understand how much more needs to be changed in our country, primarily in our heads. Which projects are closer to you: public or private? Both directions are personally close to me, but it so happened that our bureau is 70 percent loaded with public projects. Basically, these are offices of large Ukrainian and Western companies, public spaces of new residential complexes and business centers, showrooms and boutiques. How do you choose projects? It is important that our future customer would observe high standards regarding the quality of ideas and the implementation of a future project, would be bold and open to new non-standard solutions. How do you see the architectural picture of Kyiv in 10 years? Here I will quickly list what hurts. I would like to see Kyiv without an excess of outdoor advertising and scary multi-colored signs, with a developed infrastructure, good roads, adapted for people with limited mobility, with a clear navigation system. I hope that the new government will support many initiatives to improve the public spaces of our city and make it more convenient and safer for guests. What advice would you give to the younger generation? We live in an age of technological advancement. It is important not only to constantly develop and gain new knowledge, to be a real expert in your field today, but also to be able to be ahead of the times, to offer the most relevant solutions for years to come. And also always remember that the path itself, traveled together with the customer, is no less important than the final result of the project.

ABOUT PROJECT

Design project: MONO architects Photographer: Andriy Bezuglov.

Plan-scheme

The MONO architects bureau designed the first cinema in the history of the Kyiv Central Department Store. The main task for the creative team led by Victoria Oskilko was to develop a recognizable and fundamentally new for Ukraine interior format for the hall of public space. The designers used non-standard solutions: the walls of the Central Department Store’s

premium cinema were covered with thousands of aluminum tubes. Decorative elements made to order in a special matrix and mounted each separately. For the space of wide use, the team selected wearresistant, durable materials that meet fire safety requirements. Despite its purely practical significance, the decoration repeats the curvilinear shapes of the cinema halls, delighting with its aesthetics. Unconditional accent of the hall and the highlight

of the project - ceiling with glowing fringe. It consists of 19 thousand acrylic rods, which are illuminated by LEDs. The space of the cinema is filled with a special atmosphere where you want to stay, wasting time. It has no unnecessary details and unnecessary whimsicality, and minimalist design continues the lifestyle of a modern metropolis.

Plan-scheme Ground floor

Ukrainian architect Serhii Mahno built this house for his family. The house is located in the village of Kozyn, near Kiev. The architect started his career here more than 15 years ago, and decided to live here. The house is built in a modern Ukrainian style under the influence of the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty and harmony in the imperfect. Although it is almost completely covered from the street by a minimalist concrete fence, its character is immediately noticeable - a proud reed roof hangs over the walls in wooden rails. These materials are traditional for both Ukrainian and Japanese culture.

First floor

Bypassing the stone path, you find yourself in a garden-gallery with aromas of pine and freshly cut grass. Here Japanese maples and sakura met with traditional Ukrainian zoomorphic ceramics and modern art. Here are 250 tons of stones and several prospects for contemplation. In a few months, the garden grew on the site of a wasteland as if by itself, without human intervention. Shkruba House has two entrances, from the facade and the courtyard. Residents immediately fell in love with the second. Next to it there is a terrace, which in the evenings is illuminated by stars and author’s lamps by

Serhii Makhno. Step into the house, and the coolness of the clay absorbs not only the cellular, but also all the worries. On the right there are stairs to the second floor, and on the left - the main area of the house. The walls are decorated in the technique used by our great-grandparents in the khatas. Conventionally, the space is divided into three parts: open kitchen, dining area and living room. The huge window offers a panoramic view of the entire garden. To create a wall and ceiling decorated with wood, the architects simply dismantled 11 old abandoned Ukrainian khatas.

Sergei is an avid collector. He started collecting Ukrainian ceramics as a child, with his grandmother in the village. He found old jugs in the yard, washed them and took them to the «collection». The most significant part of this wall is represented by pottery from the time of Trypillia, 5–2 millennia BC. The dining area sings an ode to the wood. From every place at the table there is a wonderful perspective on the living room, garden or terrace. The house has two kitchens. The minimalism of the open emphasizes the wooden table from the flea market, which replaced the tabletop. This is a 1935 table where several generations of Hutsul families dined. The closed kitchen was decorated according to Ukrainian customs. Above the table here is a bowl - special traditional shelves for utensils. The kitchen apron is protected by Serhiy Makhno’s author’s ceramic tile «Rock». From the kitchen you can enter the yard through the window. The room for grandparents, who often visit and look after the children, is very simple and restrained.

The stairs to the second floor are held by glass handrails and red «Tetrapods» - author’s tile by Sergey Makhno Architects. The layout of the second floor is simple and ergonomic. The corridor ends with a balcony overlooking the living room and garden - the first thing the owners see when they leave their apartment in the morning.

The 16th-century ceramic tiles and guardian angels above the door to the children’s bedroom are decorated. The window overlooks the second level of the stone garden - it is arranged on the roof of the terrace. This is an analogy of one of the most famous Japanese gardens - the Ryoan-ji stone garden in Kyoto. Rocks and sand in Ryoan-ji are like sea and land, two inseparable

entities. 15 large stones of the garden are laid out in such a way that from any point of the gallery, no matter how hard you try, you can see no more than 14 together. Ivan is the eldest son of Serhiy. His room is traditionally decorated in dark colors. The main focus here is the landscape of the garden and floor of 500-year-old stained oak. At

Painting on the walls in this room was done by Serhii Makhno. The room of the youngest child is also minimalist and spacious. The master bedroom has several separate areas. Relax area, study, shower room and bathroom. The headboard of the tatami bed is an allusion to a block of clay as a symbol of the value of all things primordial. This is an author’s technique implemented by the Kelsis studio. The study area has an open window to the living room and another garden perspective. The shower room is meditative and restrained. author’s design by Sergey Makhno Architects. Following the principles of wabi-sabi, many closed areas for storing clothes, food and toys were organized in the house. These are spacious closets in the rooms, pantries, cellar. The house is equipped with a «smart home» system. The music in the master bathroom turns on as soon as you open the door. Air temperature, ventilation, sound and light - all can be controlled with a tablet. The Ukrainian company D8 was responsible for equipping the house with a «brain». In addition, the house is energy efficient. There is a geothermal well and solar panels. The house has a serious collection of contemporary Ukrainian art. Apartment on Volodymyrska Street in Kyiv is a dream object for an architect. This apartment is distinguished by its history, views of the opera house, four-meter ceilings, brick arched openings and balconies with wrought-iron railings designed by Vasnetsov himself. But there were also nuances that Alla Stepanchenko, the author

of the project, faced. The balconies of the house are in disrepair, communications were bred chaotically, the wooden floor was rotten. There was a lot of engineering work ahead of the architects, and design was still a long way off. Alla took the classic style as the basis for the interior of the apartment, but in a modern interpre-

tation. The classical approach is reflected in the stucco ceilings, oak parquet «French Christmas tree», the breakdown of the walls with moldings and marble window sills. Furniture and lighting in the interior are presented by modern brands such as Poliform, Eichholtz, Varenna.

The walls in the apartment are made in gray tones. The floor in the corridor is lined with rectangular patterns with the help of thin friezes. Cabinet fronts with an aged mirror refresh the atmosphere and add highlight to the interior.

High interior doors in the apartment are made of oak. They are echoed by high skirting boards with a panel. A black kitchen in a minimalist style against the background of doors looks especially ascetic. A kitchen apron trimmed with marble adds a touch of luxury to the interior.

The architects zoned the main kitchenliving room with a partition made of welded ferrous metal and glass. The same technique was used to make a closet in the hallway, partitions in the bathroom and toilet, some furniture details.

In the bathroom, white tiles and a Greek meander mosaic pattern were combined on the walls. Comfort in the room adds furniture and plumbing in a light retro style.

Interview

ZHENYA ZASUTSKY

INTERVIEW WITH AN ARCHITECT EVGENIY ZASUTSKIY

Tell me about your daily routine. At 7:30 we get ready and take our daughter to the kindergarten, although sometimes we can sleep longer. After that, we go and sit somewhere in a coffee shop, we come to our senses. Now the number of meetings has decreased and life is much more comfortable. Previously, at least six meetings a day, either in my office or somewhere. During the day I run around the city, solving problems, as usual. In your work, do you adapt to the customer or does he have to adapt to you? I try to negotiate with customers so that we work as a team. If this does not work out, then we try not to take on the object, because the whole process should bring pleasure and lead to quality. The point is not that someone adapts to someone, people should freely express their opinion, it should be competent. And in the same way, listen to the opinion of other people, if it is competent. What role does the team play in your work? How do you choose people for your team? Both me and the team, we play an important role in the common cause. I’m not a studio without a team, and without me they’re not really a studio either. Therefore, we complement each other. What is your professional dream? Make a product that will be useful to one billion people. What cuisine do you prefer? Where and what do you like to eat? I love all sorts of local, real establishments. I remember we were in India and there was a dude making scrambled eggs near our hotel. He fried it, took it with his Indian hands and simply put it on bread. There are also Michelin-starred restaurants, which are also fun to visit. There is a peculiar culture and food, and wine, and atmosphere. As my friend once said to me: “How can you make a cool restaurant if you have never been to it”? Therefore, it is a duty for me to visit cool restaurants so that I can see how it all works. But they are overly mannered, and I like something more mundane. How do you rest? Endless. Many different ways, many friends. It relaxes me to interact with people. And it can also be skydiving, riding something, drinking with friends somewhere in a bar, a night party, a trip abroad or in Ukraine, a trip with tents

in the “three days without a phone” format. Sometimes rest is to disconnect from the whole world, sometimes it is to break into the “movement” for three days. You have to combine one with the other. What have you wanted to try for a long time, but did not dare? Of course, 2020 made its own adjustments, but a year ago I registered a corporation in America, we made an application that we are actively developing. This is my own new path. At the same time, I overcame a bunch of fears in a year. When we were with friends in Odessa, I was not afraid to go to the edge of the old Odessa balcony. I overcame my fear of heights and went skydiving. What are the main principles of your studio? Thinking about an idea is one of the main principles. A certain product ideology is what we can differ in. A quality designer or architect must be quality a priori. Which projects are more difficult to work with: largescale or small ones? Small ones are more difficult. When you work on a large-scale project, you assemble a team, you come up with an idea and work on it, went to the site, spent four nights at work, cried twice into the pillow, finished, received money and rejoice. In small projects, everything is the same, only I didn’t get much money, I went everywhere, traveled around the whole city, cried 10 times into my pillow… the process is tiring. Do you have any universal secrets of combining functionality and aesthetics? Of course have. Which? I won’t tell. In general, all this is connected with ergonomics and personal practice. You study theory, and in the process you look where you can add, where you can subtract. Fifteen years of experience as an architect suggests all this balance. Tell us about your work plans for the future? To do for customers and for pleasure. We do not strive to scale the studio to a huge workshop for the production of projects, but we still want to make cool and cooler than everyone else.

BLITZ POLL If Hollywood decided to make a movie about your life, who would you choose to play the lead role? I wish it was Brad Pitt. Although there is also Christian Bale, I would also give him this role. If someone wrote a biographical book about you, what would be its name? «Sinusoid». If you could invite any artist to dinner, who would it be and why? I would like to talk to Mark Rothko and Pablo Picasso, they are good marketers and sellers of their art. From modern - Jackson Pollock. And also - Kandinsky and Malevich. If you are a car, which brand? Volvo Polestar. Who do you think is smarter, cats or dogs? Technically dogs, but I live more with cats. What songs get stuck in your head the most? They used to get stuck less often. But there were a couple of events where I was taught how to mix

tracks, and now slightly different tracks are stuck in my head. From the last - daKooka. In general, Spotify has been solving most of my problems in this regard lately. They offer tracks that get stuck and then replaced with new ones that get stuck instead of the previous ones. Why is Malevich’s «Black Square» an art? When Malevich submitted Black Square at the Biennale, primitivism was already in vogue. The previous regime fell and a lot of artists appeared doing something radically new. Their work was also shown at the exhibition. But only Malevich hung his painting at the top of one of the corners, in the place where the icon used to be hung. He replaced the icon with a “Black Square”, this symbolized a new stage in the development of the country and humanity as a whole. He created the context and symbol of the new, not just a black-painted square. Wood or plastic? Regarding the fact for what purposes it is used. There are tasks that need to be solved with different materials.

Apartments in Kyiv, designed by the architecture and design studio Zasutsky Architects, are a classic «shell» with modern content. When developing the plan and zoning the space, the team took the general architecture of the building as a basis, harmoniously interweaving large window openings with deep window sills and “Stalinist” ceiling heights into the total volume of the apartment.

64

Textured gypsum stucco molding, which adorns the walls and ceiling areas in contrasting colors in all rooms, is a symbol of old aristocratic houses and complements the classic “shell” of the interior. Natural parquet in the traditional “spruce” layout and massive double-leaf interior doors fit into the overall concept, avant-garde furniture and modern paintings on the walls are used contrary to the classics. Restrained, but with clear characteristic lines, minimalistic, but with bright accents and bold combinations, the interior has become the epitome of sophistication, elegance and tradition.

The owner of this apartment in Kyiv turned to Kateryna Mardanova and Natalia Danilina from the Mdesign Architectute Interior studio to develop a custom closet for the corridor. Architects have repeatedly explained that they design entirely, and make furniture only for their projects. The customer was so persistent that Kateryna and Natalia ended up at the site.

In a few hours it was decided to replace the closet in the bedroom and furniture in the kitchen. This was later followed by a change of storage room to a bathroom. Thus began the reconstruction of the corridor: changed the doors and baseboards, painting, wall panels, electrical fittings, door handles. Then the architects dismantled the wall between the kitchen and living room. Only the children’s room and wooden floor were preserved.

The interior customer travels a lot and has many business partners abroad. The task he set for the author of the project is to create a prestigious and comfortable housing. Solving this problem was not so easy, but professionals from various fields of civil engineering did their job with honor. The apartment is equipped with a «smart home» system with a light script, designer furniture, including a table in the dining room, the entire living room and bar in two areas. For this interior, the author’s development of sketches of walls was created individually, new techniques were developed and implemented, new exclusive colors were obtained.

Every node in the interior has been measured and thought through. The concept itself was based on the phrase «holistic interior». The house has many artifacts, brought antiques, which divides the space with paintings and graphics. Together with the company «Elements of Style» and Zoya Seleznyova, they found impressive fabrics for the interior, and they created the atmosphere that the author wanted. Interview

OLEKSIY SHCHERBACHEV INTERVIEW WITH OLEKSIY SHCHERBACHEV, INCUBE STUDIO, WINNERS OF THE «INTERIOR OF THE YEAR» 2021 CONTEST IN THE «INTERIOR OF AN APARTMENT IN A CLASSIC STYLE» CATEGORY.

What was the most difficult part of the project that won the 2021 Interior of the Year competition? Not difficult, but rather laborious and responsible, such as connecting all utilities, lighting, lowvoltage and fire systems. They set themselves the task of maintaining the highest possible ceilings. Tell us about the moments that were left out of the competition. The main point is that it was unusual for our modern design studio to receive the award in the category «Classic Interior». Although this interior, although made in the style of modern classics, fully reflects our design philosophy. What can you say about the level of work of other participants presented in the competition? The level of participants is only growing from year to year. Lots of cool new studios and designers are coming. It is quite difficult to compete, and we are very glad that in such a strong competition, the jury members celebrated our project! What trends in architecture and design do you think you should expect in 2022? It seems to me that the general trend of minimalism in combination with high-quality «expensive» finishes with natural wood and stone will continue to develop. As for the interiors and architecture, which claim to be leaders in the field, there are trends for outrage and creativity! What would you say to your fellow designers who will take part in the «Interior of the Year» 2022? We won this year’s competition, when the design and implementation stopped focusing and analyzing what is in trend, which interior to make to win. And they set themselves completely different tasks, regardless of what their colleagues in the shop are doing. And the first place in the competition was very unexpected for me. Honestly, we didn’t plan to post this project at first, but the emotions from the victory exceeded all expectations! So the advice is to develop and focus on work processes and tasks!

Blitz: If Hollywood decided to make a film about your life, who would you choose to star? I really like Brad Pitt at this age. If he agrees, I’ll be glad to. If someone wrote a biographical book about you, what would it be? «In the clouds.» If you could invite any artist to dinner, who would you choose and why? Perhaps, Santiago Calatrava, as a person with a bright creative identity, I would have many questions about the design of his space objects. If you are a car, what brand? Mercedes Who is smarter: cats or dogs? Cats What songs are most often stuck in your head? Rock ballads Why is Malevich’s Black Square an art? Art is transcendent and called to serve as a guide to the perfect world. This work breaks down stereotypes of perception and forces to include the seventh sense to evaluate and experience cosmic perfection.

It’s a story of trust between the designer and the customer, a story of graffiti on the wall, a huge brass panel and other non-trivial solutions that we were happy to implement. We got the space from two combined apartments with a terrace with a total area of almost 700 square meters. Customers have lived in London for a long time, so we were asked to create an eclectic mix of classic and modern styles. The result is an interior with its own character.

Plan-scheme

Ruslan Baginskiy is a well-known Ukrainian hat brand, represented all over the world. This is not the first year that the showroom has been located in a historic building built in 1895-1896 in Kyiv at 33 Pushkinska Street. Now it has become important to make a «renovation store», and for this Ruslan Baginsky turned to RinaLovko Studio.

Ruslan Baginskiy’s team from Lviv cultural capital of Ukraine, lives and works in Kyiv, and considers the city of Paris as their third home. An important wish of the customer was to combine the atmosphere of these amazing cities and transfer it to the project space. Thus, the idea arose to create a showroom with a motif of a stylish apartment, because in Europe it is not uncommon to meet local showrooms in residential areas. For this purpose, Rina Lovko - an architect and owner of a design studio, went to Lviv to be inspired by the old streets and apartments. It was in Lviv that it became clear what colors, tones and details will saturate the showroom. Also for the project were found vintage furniture, which was to complement the idea - moving the visitor to the old European city. To the left of the hall is the kitchen, storage room and meeting room. The room is designed for comfortable communication between VIP-clients and Ruslan’s team. In the center of the room, an elegant wooden chandelier «Duhy», made to order by Vasya Grublyak, attracts attention, and along the walls there is a console and a rack for accessories and goods from seasonal collections.

Going a little further, we see the main room, where the visual accent is the central mirror. It makes the room bigger and allows customers to see themselves in full growth, trying on and choosing hats. It displays cubes and shelves that fill the space of the showroom. The cubes are made to order and decorated with lime plaster, visually reminiscent of Lviv houses covered with limestone. Among the cubes there are marble blocks, which Rina and Ruslan found in marble warehouses. Also, inspired by Lviv, we painted the shelves and walls in gray, which were highlighted by warm lighting. And in order to make a unique texture, quartz crumbs were added to the paint. The accent in our object is a table with a textured surface, where the displayed product stands out in black. During the design, the number of hats and the area of surfaces on which you can make compositions from collections were calculated. The room we worked with is full of history. To convey the old days, we saved the molding and invited an artist who drew the depth of the shadows of the pattern and made the effect of wear. The inherited parquet was restored and covered with transparent varnish, and we emphasized the arched windows with smoothing corners, as we did in ancient times.

MIKHAIL REVA

NATURE WILL MAKE US RESPECT IT

Author: Marina Pilipenko Photographer: Oksana Kanivets

IN EARLY DECEMBER, THE ALL-UKRAINIAN ANNUAL ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION «INTERIOR OF THE YEAR» WILL ANNOUNCE THE WINNERS. HONORED ARTIST OF UKRAINE, SCULPTOR MIKHAIL REVA TOLD HOUSE AND INTERIOR MAGAZINE WHAT THE GRAND PRIX OF THE COMPETITION SYMBOLIZES, WHAT IS THE SECRET OF THE ARTIST’S SUCCESS, AND HOW THE PANDEMIC HAS CHANGED THE WORLD OF DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE.

This year the Interior of the Year competition is held for the 12th time. Do you follow events? How do you rate the level of participants? - I follow in general. There are things I like and things I don’t like. The advantage is that there are more young people, and there are quite creative projects. Disadvantage: many works are similar to each other. In some cases, you can change the photos and say that the same person did it. Still, an individual style should be felt, and not just trends in architecture and design. I appreciate when I can distinguish between artists and architects.

Perhaps our designers and architects are afraid to stand out? Self-doubt is cited as one of the reasons why domestic industry representatives are so little known in the European market. How to make our specialists more in demand in the world? - I think there is no problem. You don’t have to look left or right at all. You have to mind your own business. This is a matter of harmonizing society, space, creating a comfortable environment for citizens. It is necessary to solve problems of local significance. We are doing this for ourselves, not for Europe or America. I think we should love ourselves first.

138

Interview

What do you think is success in the creative profession? — I believe that success is the right of choice for any creator. And his internal criteria and goals are the same tuning fork that allows you to hold the bar high. As for the concept of “fashionable” in relation to an artist, designer or architect, then everything is quite personal. If one has creative thinking, one creates a harmonious cozy space, then, of course, one will be in demand in the market. But the competition is high, it does not give time to rest. This year you have developed a new design for the Grand Prix award for the Interior of the Year competition. What is the idea? — The idea is that the architect or designer will receive a prize in the form of a harmony formula — the golden ratio. The figurine is a copy of the relief carved on the facade of the “Living Unit” house in Marseille, which was designed by the legendary architect Le Corbusier. The relief depicts the Modulor, a graphic symbol of his own proportioning system. This is an icon of modern architecture. A tradition that we, unfortunately, today forget. The formula of the golden section is incorporated in the Universe, in all nature. This harmony surrounds us. The only one who brings disharmony is a person. Because of his ego, he invents all sorts of inharmonious things for himself. There is no vanity in nature. Everything is simple.

Interview

Now everyone is saying that the pandemic has changed the world. How did it change the world of artists, designers and architects? - The pandemic has changed the world, that’s for sure. And will continue to change it. Nature must be respected, you can not treat the earth in such an obscene way and consider yourself the kings of this planet. We must pay attention to what will remain after us. I think the situation will require us to return to our roots. Cities will change, because the pandemic will force us to live not in skyscrapers, but in places where there is more air. There will be quite serious changes in the organization of human habitat. Nature will make us respect her.

What city would you call the architectural capital of Ukraine today? - I would share this title between Lviv and Dnipro. There are more architectural monuments in Lviv, this is not the case in Dnipro. But I like how it develops. Dnipro residents have paid attention to public space: they are making pedestrian streets, recreation areas, parks. And they approach the matter very qualitatively and comprehensively. They transform not a piece near a private store or cafe, but entire neighborhoods. Dnipro is a city for people, this is the trend. It is very important. In general, Dnipro is developing as a modern hub. I think it will become the Ukrainian Silicon Valley. A year ago, in the fall of 2020, your exhibition “Revelation” was held in Odessa - the first in 15 years. What impression did it leave? - I liked the attitude of the people. I realized that communication is necessary between the viewer and the artist, without it there is a huge vacuum. I was pleased that the exhibition was extended five times. It attracted a large number of visitors. This stimulates me as an artist, because people need my work. What are your professional expectations for 2022? - I have several projects planned, they are very interesting and diverse. The whole next year has already been scheduled, more than one opening of new objects should take place. All works will appear in Ukraine. The task of any artist, architect, designer is to create a new harmonious environment. And it is important for me to create harmony in my country.

Project name: Glen Moray Apartments Authors of the project (full name): Andriy Bochulya, Maria Vergezova Company name: MAD group City: Kyiv Contacts: 066-555-48-88 Year of project implementation: 2020 Project area: 150 m2 Photographer: Sergey Savchenko

The authors of the project are telling the story Apartment for a young and ambitious athlete in the center of Kiev. The architect’s task was to combine minimalism and comfort in the interior. The goal was to create dynamics and space. We have turned the apartment on the 26th floor into a single space without visible borders, so that you can enjoy a panoramic view of the capital from any corner.

Initially, the apartment had a completely illogical round layout and non-standard geometry. This layout does not allow to make the most of the space, because in the process there are difficulties with finding and installing furniture. Installing standard furniture in such a room is problematic, because in a room of irregular shape, any three-dimensional object with right angles will significantly reduce the space, and not only visually.

We were faced with an almost impossible task of planning a living room, taking into consideration the desire of the customer to have the most open space. One of the wishes was for the sofa area to be located in front of the panoramic windows to enjoy the views of evening Kyiv, but at the same time that it would be possible to watch TV. We were required to divide the apartment into private and guest zones, choose the right elements and items for zoning, create a functional and rational design, while maintaining the maximum amount of natural light and not prevent it from entering the room. Daylight will not only make the apartment spacious, but also allow to live without artificial lighting until the sunset.

THE BEDROOM AREA IMMERSES US IN A C O M P L E T E LY D I F F E R E N T W O R L D , T H E CONCEPT OF THIS ROOM IS MADE IN DA R K S O OT H I N G TO N E S . The bedroom area immerses us in a completely different world, the concept of this room is made in dark soothing tones, but the slate finish adds a bit of brutality. In the spa area, we implemented an interesting idea. A through fireplace has been installed in the wall between the bedroom and the bathroom, which creates a window and allows you to break some intimacy between the bathroom and the bedroom through the flickering flames. In the bathrooms, we used faucets from the latest Gress collection in brass; also in the spa we installed a rain shower. One of the walls of the shower in the decoration of glass panels with Sicis fabric. Not wanting to allocate a separate area for the kitchen - we hid it in a cube that stands alone and works on three: on the one hand the kitchen, on the other - built-in appliances (coffee machine, oven), on the third side there are cabinets and wine refrigerator. The secret of this kitchen is that it can be closed by shutters.

We solved the problem with the TV with a motorized elevator, which gets out of the ceiling. We hid the wardrobe in a glass cube. Inside there is a Rimadesio storage system, which allowed us to hang a translucent curtain. This space can be both in plain sight and more private. Another advantage of this apartment is the game room. It has everything you need for Men’s club: a sofa, a game console, a gaming computer.

The author of the project, Valery Vedula, tells the story. The customer came to us by the recommendation of friends, so the initial level of trust was already laid. The design task from the customers, a young couple with two children of preschool and primary school age, sounded like this: “We need a bright, comfortable house, where each family member will have his own personal space.”

All functions in the children’s areas have been successfully solved, and these are: sleep, study, spa and reception of friends, as well as a sports ground, a play area for the younger generation and their friends, a garage with a parking area for family cars and future guests. The obligatory desire of the customers was architectural supervision and full support of the project up to the stage of moving in, including architecture and landscape.

An absolute success was the location of the site on the edge of the gorge - the dream of any designer. And an interesting architectural project that included the main house, sketches of a small spa house and a pool. As often happens, the architectural layout of the house in the initial project was dry and uninteresting, so work on the interior began with it.

The whole house was divided into four zones - the parents’ zone (bedroom, wardrobe, bathroom), the children’s zone - spaces with a separate bedroom, bathroom, wardrobe for both children and a playroom where they can not only study with tutors, but also spend time with friends, protecting parents from noise and din. The third zone is the guest room with a bathroom, the fourth is the common spaces of the living room with a dedicated fireplace area, kitchen, front dining room and office.

We had a stunning view of the gorge, so we wanted to open the view to it as much as possible, literally from the front door. Since the entrance group is located on the sunny side for most of the daylight hours, we wanted to let the flowing golden streams through the entrance hall into the living room.

To do this, they organized a large glass partition, which only zonally separates these spaces. This is how the name of the project was born - «House of the Sun». The design project was completed in three months, and this time it was decided to present it to the customer in a finished, stitched form. Of course, there was a certain risk that some rooms would have to be adjusted or re-

done, but there was an infrequent opportunity to show the whole project at once. We started work on the project at the end of May 2019, approved it with the customer at the end of August 2019. Construction work began in December 2019, and the customers moved in in August 2021.

SCULPTURE RAIN

«Art - objects, objects of modern art and sculpture in the interior « 1st place - 21751 Sculpture: «Rain» by Nazar Bilyk is located in Shkrub House by Sergei Makhno In 2010, Ukrainian artist Nazar Bilyk created the six-meter sculpture «Rain» as a symbol of man’s connection with nature and a symbol of dialogue between the human species and the world around him. This amazing bronze sculpture is a man looking vertically at the sky, and on his face there is a huge glass raindrop. It is noticeable that the lone figure and the drop are perfectly balanced together, and it seems that there is a calm communication between them.

The creation of this apartment began with emotions. At the first meeting with the designer, future customers told about a recent trip to Austria, where they lived in a chalet for several days. The story was so emotional that the houses on the Alpine slopes became a guide for Yury Zimenko in developing a concept for an apartment in a new residential complex in Kyiv.

“What is the main feature of the chalet? Lots of natural wood. And the wood in the interior is an excellent backdrop for color experiments, which I resort to from time to time. We seized on this idea and tried to reveal it as much as possible in the interior space,” says Yury Zimenko. The designer finalized the original layout of the apartment. The center of the apartment was taken under the living area, combined with a kitchen and dining room. Two bedrooms and bathrooms are adjacent. A place for them was found due to the spacious corridor. .

The main emphasis in interior design was made on textures: wood, metal, stone, natural textiles and fur upholstery. And also - on color accents and art objects from Ukrainian artists. Most of the furniture in the apartment is also Ukrainian made. “We set ourselves the task of creating a modern space with an atmosphere that customers could call “their home”. For this, tactile materials and a rich palette were used. And since we worked on complete trust and in one breath with the customers, everything we planned was possible, ”recalls designer Yuri Zimenko.
