The editor in chief’s word

EDITOR LETTER We live in a special time - a period of transformation. War has come to our house. But as history shows, any crisis is an impetus for progress. An opportunity to review our values, beliefs and principles. The current situation faced by our generation exposes the thin and fragile, giving the opportunity to become stronger. Just as fire and water temper steel, changing the crystal lattice of matter, so a person changes at the inner level. They say bad times become good memories. Having filled the issue with interesting content, we are gradually making changes to the design of the Home and Interior magazine itself. This issue is special in every way and from every angle. Therefore, we wish you, as well as ourselves, to keep up with the times, be open to innovations and fill life with bright colors. «Everything will be Ukraine» Chief Editor of the magazine House and Interior. SALONE DEL MOBILE 2022: THE BRANDS VOICES THE FIRST MAJOR FACE-TO-FACE EVENT AFTER THE YEARS OF PANDEMIC HAS COME TO AN END. A PROFITABLE EXPERIENCE FOR MANY OF THE COMPANIES TAKING PART. HERE IS A SAMPLER OF THEIR REACTIONS, FOLLOWED BY THE UNPUBLISHED REPORT BY DELFINO SISTO LEGNANI FROM THE FAIR Salone del Mobile.Milano 2022: the exhibiting companies present make a first assessment of their experience at the fair. Common to all was the desire to meet again and engage in person at a great international event. There was also a sense of satisfaction for the attendance, despite the substantial absences – in terms of numbers – of China and countries in the Russian sphere. For many exhibitors the turnout was well above expectations in both quantity and quality. A result that is giving companies a new charge of energy: to continue to forge ahead while complying with the quality canons of the sector, but in a world that is profoundly changed. We have brought together some impressions from leading figures at the Salone 2022.

Fanpage opened by tracing this year’s home décor new perspectives, exemplified by the collections presented by the companies’ world exclusives at the Salone del Mobile.Milano 2022: “Inclusiveness and versatility, new materials and sustainability were the key themes for the new furniture collections presented at Milan Design Week 2022. Objects and spaces are becoming more and more hybrid in everyone’s homes, which is why many companies focused on light and

modular furnishings that could be moved, arranged, assembled and exist individually.” The products conceived for contemporary living focused on significant themes (and less on stylistic ones), in fact, reflecting changes that have accelerated with the transformations brought about by the last two and a half years, which have seen the domestic environment at the centre of a revolution. which the companies presented themselves at the fair in the round - according to an article by Giovanna Mancini in Il Sole 24 Ore - stating that the new scenarios seen at the Salone concerned above all a “return to nature and craftsmanship,” seen as “the search for more natural materials, colours and processes, linked to local traditions or techniques of the past […] one of the most evident trends among the stands of the Salone del Mobile.” These directions were also confirmed by Carlo Boffi, Michele Gervasoni and Al-

After all, as the same journalist said in a piece on ecological transition, at the 2022 Salone we saw how “sustainability (environmental and social) and ecological transition are at the centre of the strategies of furniture companies, now considered an out-and-out growth factor and not just an ethical or marketing choice, as demonstrated not only by the products and the stands of the exhibitors at the Salone del Mobile, but also by the choices made by the Salone itself.”

Interview

OKSANA SHUMELDA

O.M.SHUMELDA

Tell us about your studio. How long have you been working in the field of architecture? O.M.SHUMELDA has existed for 13 years. The studio brings together architects, designers, constructors and artists. At first, we worked exclusively with design, but for the last five years we have also been designing architecture, realizing that it is one. You can get acquainted with our works more on the website design-lviv.com. Tell us, what is it like to be the head of an architectural studio? Like every leader, it is responsible. Do you have a special style or trademark in architecture? We love what we do. We understand what responsibility lies on us and create, involving knowledge and heart. What are the principles of your studio? We rent and release projects that we are confident in. Each project is a new history and philosophy. What are you working on now? We are preparing for vacation. The whole studio has a vacation for two or three weeks. About winning the Ukrainian Urban Awards competition and the philosophy of architectural creativity Your project won a prize in the competition. How do you plan to apply the jury’s appreciation for further development? Prizes in the competition - it always pleases and shows us that we are on the right way. Tell us about the project that won a prize. At the Ukrainian Urban Awards we have two prizes: second place in the category «Unsold commercial object» and 3rd place in the category «Unsold cultural and social object». Blurred border is a conceptual design of a border mini-car terminal near the Polish-Ukrainian border. The first meeting is always unforgettable, either with a person or with a country. When we cross the border, we immediately get the impression of the country. I want the acquaintance with Ukraine not to be stereotypical, but inspiring. Therefore, it was important for us not only to de-

sign the object, but also to convey a certain message that architecture in Ukraine can be «different». On the ground floor there are bathrooms, reception, waiting room, cafe-restaurant, kitchen, shop and technical rooms. On the second floor there is a bathroom, a room for staff, technical rooms. The building has three main entrances and one technical. Blurred border is the case when the form complements the essence. Our building (paper airplane) as a symbol of new opportunities, visions and changes, which sets a certain direction in the country and people’s consciousness. The project «IN THE SKY» is a hotel and recreation complex in Bukovel. A place of internal dialogue with nature. It is an escape from the outside world and a search for a person’s emotional recovery. The vast horizons of the Carpathians and the complex relief, with the possibility of landslides, dictated their conditions. The facade is not just the completion of the building - thanks to the mirrors, simple shapes and panoramic windows, it seems to dissolve and integrate into the environment. And, despite the large area (total area - 1400 m2, of which 920 m2 is building area, 495 m2 is landscaping and 390 m2 of paving), we managed to assimilate architecture and nature, keep the mood of peace and balance. We placed parking, technical and storage facilities on the underground level. Rooms and all administrative areas - first and second floors. There is also a restaurant, sauna and spacious terraces. The rooms are designed for seven people and include a bed, a bathroom, a small kitchen and a lounge area. What is your general impression of the Ukrainian Urban Awards competition? More such competitions are needed in the country. And if it is already the Ukrainian Urban Awards, then, of course, it should be in the native state language. Who would you like to see on the jury next year? Bjarke Ingels. Give professional advice to young architects of Ukraine. Architects are responsible for the projected future. This requires a lot of knowledge, not just complaints. Therefore, learn, develop, travel and design.

The first meeting always becomes unforgettable, either with a person or with a country. When we cross the border, we immediately get the impression of the country. The team of Oksana Shumelda’s architectural and design studio wanted the acquaintance of a foreigner or a Ukrainian with Ukraine not to be stereotypical, but inspiring. Therefore,

the authors of the project had not only to design the object, but also to convey a certain message that the architecture in Ukraine can be «different». The site for the object is located two kilometers from the international checkpoint Hrushiv, near the Polish-Ukrainian border. The area is 1 hectare. The location is picturesque. Free spacious horizons of fields of meadow flowers, forests and oak groves. When designing, the authors understood how important such an object plays in this location. In order not to disturb the local nature, the architects used the principle of “green roofs”.

The roofs of the building are equipped with white solar modules from the Swiss research center CSEM, the efficiency of which is more than 10%. Previously, such figures were considered virtually impossible because white surfaces reflect most of the visible light. The module looks like a large white sheet of paper with a protective glass surface, so it easily fits into the concept of the building.

Order, comfort and functionality are embodied in the multi-format restaurant project ZWIN & SHOco. Volodymyr Nepyyvoda, Dmytro Bonesko and a team of designers and architects realized it in Kulparkivska Street in Lviv. Wood, metal, concrete and lighting

create a special atmosphere, which has become a hallmark of interiors designed and implemented by the studio YOD design lab. Among the already familiar features of the author’s special style is a dark range of shades that relaxes and adjusts to rest. This in-

cludes a minimum of decor and green plants that effectively decorate the interior. Modern multi-format restaurant with an area of 295 square meters combines a bakery and confectionery and a wine bar.

The peculiarity of the project is the combination of institutions of two different formats within one space, working with different products independently of each other. The change of format in the interior is reflected on the big prism: with the change of the concept on it the image changes. The YOD design lab used authentic materials to decorate the space, as all wooden furniture and installations were made of oak wine barrels.

Interview

ANDREY ASANOV

ANDRIY ASANOV ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN STUDIO

What was the most difficult part of creating a Yoki object? If I say that there were no difficulties in creating the Yoki object, it will be hard to believe, but it is still true. We embodied it in one breath. Proof of this is the implementation period, namely four months. I want to add that the restaurant is filled with original items that were used for the first time, especially for this institution. How different is the project idea from the implementation? Did you manage to put everything into practice? The task was to create a restaurant in a short time, so we applied a somewhat non-standard approach, which is possible with absolute trust and understanding between the customer, designer and team of performers at all stages of implementation, and since this was not the first object embodied in the tandem of the above participants, the communication was already worked out. The unusual thing was that the executive processes at the site began a week after the task was received. We approved the planning scheme. We showed the total volumes, commented on the idea, heard an affirmative answer from the customers, and although the visualizations were still ahead, we started a working project in parallel. You will not be surprised by the Eastern theme today, so the task we set ourselves was not to repeat. Indicative is the fact that the result does not differ from the original vision. Tell us about the moments that remained «behind the scenes» of the «Interior of the Year» contest

If we talk about the competition «Interior of the Year», it is traditionally a powerful professional platform for sharing experiences. In 2019, the audience of participants has significantly increased, thanks to the possibility of submitting unimplemented objects. This circumstance made the competition more democratic. It provided an opportunity to show those projects that may not be implemented in the future. In fact, such a problem exists and I understand the motivations of the organizers who launched the initiative with the introduction of a new category, but personally I may be more impressed by the implemented object, it has a different energy. Yes, the concept is often bolder. I have one piece of advice, let’s not be afraid to implement bold concepts. What trends in architecture and design, in your opinion, should be expected in 2020? If we talk about the trends that we will see in 2020, I do not think there will be a breakthrough in design or architecture. In general, I would single out the vector they have been moving lately. I can say that there is a more thorough search for context, less creative selfishness, concentration on functions, respect for authenticity, the search for identity. The phrase: «I see so» until recently would have been perceived as ingenious. Today it is a manifestation of unprofessionalism. Time demands meaningful decisions, not design for the sake of design itself. This could be put an end to, if not for my noncategoricalness. Because if we talk exclusively about design, the framework in which they will try to put it will always be broken by such destroyers of patterns as Hundertwasser, Dali, Andriy Varhola or Elon Musk.

domiinterier.com / дом и интерьер

BLITZ POLL. If Hollywood decided to make a film about your life, who would you choose for the lead role? Someone unknown If someone wrote a biographical book about you, what would be the name? «The world tried to catch me, but couldn’t» If you could invite any artist to dinner, who would you choose and why? Ivan Marchuk. I have no idols in my life. But Marchuk is a Ukrainian Van Gogh, it would be interesting to hear him. If you are a car, what brand? Bugatti Veyron Who is smarter: cats or dogs? Any answer would be wrong. What songs are most often stuck in your head? I have a transition period for sure. Jazz. I don’t know if for a long time. I think the reason is improvisation. Why is Malevich’s Black Square an art? Because we are talking about it.

The room is located on the ground floor of a new residential building. Since the designers were dealing with a single open space, they set themselves the goal of making such a zoning, the scope of which would be incomprehensible at first glance. Therefore, they deliber-

ately proposed a multifunctional scheme of seats. So next to the bar area there was an eight-meter table with bar stools and the possibility of free seating. Next there are round tables with four and eight chairs, as well as two isolated seating areas.

In order not to decorate the establishment with the typical decor of oriental restaurants, the interior of YOKI used the author’s decorating techniques and the theme of Japanese meditative gardens. The wooden dragon became the only item brought from an antique shop in Italy.

Other fillings were created by local craftsmen. Successful work with light helped to emphasize ideologically important details and compositional decisions. All illuminators, except for rail, were designed by Andriy Asanov’s studio.

The collection of table textiles and ceramics GUCULIA.TINI emerges from the depths of the Ukrainian ethnic group. She was inspired by her love for Hutsul aesthetics and mythology, symbolism and ancient mysticism, embodied in Gavaret ceramics, a unique pottery technique of western Ukraine. The GUCULIA.TINI collection is an experiment in which traditional pottery technology is combined with minimalist geometric shapes. The textile part of the collection has absorbed rethought ancient symbols, natural materials, laconic, restrained design and is completely handmade. The whole composition, consisting of objects and textiles, creates a muted but solemn background for the dishes and the process of their consumption, slow, meaningful, tangible, deep.

In July, BANKHOTEL, a new luxury hotel, opened in the center of Lviv. It is located in the historic building of the Austro-Hungarian Bank, which has undergone extensive restoration and reconstruction. The creative architectural workshop «Kudin» worked on the project for three years. In 1914, the project of the original building in the academic modern style was developed and implemented by architects Edmund Zhikhovich and Mikhail Luzhetsky.

The authors of the reconstruction studied old photographs and drawings, restored the roof with the tower and returned the building to its former, original appearance. On the ground floor of the hotel there is a restaurant, and on the top floor there is a wine bar with a panoramic terrace. On the second floor, in the space of the former operating room, a congress hall for 300 people was opened. There is a terrace and a lounge area nearby.

SERGII AND ALINA GUBAR

GAB ARCHITECTS

Your project won a prize in the competition. How do you plan to apply the jury’s appreciation for further development? Our GAB team is a team of creative people who love their work and are focused on results; we strive for the architecture we create to have a positive impact on a person’s emotional state and feelings. We are grateful to the jury for appreciating our project, which shows how architecture can blend harmoniously with nature. In the future, we will also participate in various Ukrainian and foreign competitions; we dream of implementing high-quality architecture around the world. Tell us about the project that won a prize. The Asgard project, or treehouse as we used to call it, is our first joint project. The customer’s first idea was to create a tree house. To do this, we went to the site and looked for the best place for it, and walking along the forest road, we stopped - we felt that this place is exactly what is suitable for a new type of recreation (behind there is a forest slope, and opposite there is a lake full of silence and harmony with nature). The houses are inscribed so that not a single tree is cut down. In some houses on the balcony trees grow just in the holes in the floor. The interior is designed in a modern style, using natural materials, designed underfloor heating. Area - 18 m2. Tell us about your studio. How long have you been working in the field of architecture? Our GAB studio was recently established, we have a good team of architects and related specialists. Serhiy: I started working in the field of architecture at the university, and I have been doing it for about 10 years. During this period, many projects have been implemented, for example, Technoplast in cooperation with B. Goy was awarded the NSAU prize. Alina: Six months ago I graduated with a master’s degree, during my studies I constantly attended various courses. She attended a summer school in London; I was very lucky that my curator was Nahed Javad from (ZHA). It influenced my conceptual thinking. A playground was recently built in St. George’s Square in Lviv in collaboration with Yulia Rybak and Khrystyna Telyuk. It is a pleasure to see how what you have created benefits and delights people, especially children.

Tell us, what is it like to be the head of an architectural studio? Being a leader means being responsible and caring. The task of the leader is to take care of his clients, colleagues, to create a feeling of mutual trust and support. It is the ability to understand the client’s wishes, to be aware of the latest architecture and design, the ability to unite the team and internal / external work processes. The leader must see the whole picture and organize each stage of the process. Do you have a special style or trademark in architecture? For us, first of all, it is an understanding of the space in which we design. Analysis of «problems» and their solutions. We are guided by the fact that a person feels comfortable and grows up in a «healthy» environment. And, of course, I want to give the «WOW» effect! What are the principles of your studio? We are guided by GAB (GRASP-ACCOMODATEBUILD) principles • Grasp - to capture and gather all the necessary information, the right and best idea (based on intuition and knowledge) main directions: harmony, socially-oriented thinking, user experience and testing of the idea. • Accomodate - adapt the idea to the environment and human needs. • Build - to realize, to build an environment in which people will feel harmonious and happy, combining architecture and caring for nature. And in the office we appreciate good and friendly relations. Honesty and openness are important in our team, we are not ashamed to ask if we do not know something. What is your general impression of the Ukrainian Urban Awards competition? First of all, we are extremely pleased that there are so many talented architects in Ukraine, and to be among them. Secondly, UUA is a great opportunity to see and show projects, to understand the trends of Ukrainian architecture. Third, we like the composition of the jury: experienced Ukrainian and foreign architects / urban planners / designers.

OMNOMNOM is a new vegan cafe located in Lviv’s Futura HUB. The main advantages of the institution are a friendly atmosphere and a wide selection of dishes. The cafe is located on two floors, and its total area is 380 square meters. The authors of the project were the Replus Design Bureau team.

Designers have developed and successfully implemented the concept of a simple, natural and concise space. Furniture has become the main zoning element in the establishment. It was created to order specifically for the project. Concrete, metal and glass were used for interior design.

A feature of the interior was the abundance of living plants, including real trees. Tree trunks do not just decorate the interior space, but are used as a functional element. They hid a metal frame that holds the steps and the second floor of the cafe. Green spaces have decorated, among other things, the perimeter of the second floor. Natural motifs continue in the wall paintings created by the artist Liva Ruka. He depicted animals, birds and fish, which in other restaurants can only be seen as dishes.

In addition, holes were made in the concrete floor between the floors. Thanks to them, natural light from the second floor enters the first. In the evening, built-in lamps are lit in the holes, which illuminate the establishment from above and below.

Interior design takes advantage of the natural environment and extraordinary landscapes. The building is located on a slope, close to the tall spruces. Due to the slope, the lower level of the structure is partially built into the ground. The structure stretches perpendicular to the slope, forming a rectangle measuring 21x11 meters. There is a separate sauna with a panoramic window, which overlooks the facade in the shape of a stone square. There is a living room and a kitchen nearby. From here there is an exit to the terrace, which is on the same level with the slope.

Rethinking traditional Hutsul life in the heart of old Lviv The project of Lviv architects Khrystyna Badzyan and Dmytro Sorokevych, founders of the replus bureau, once again touches on the theme of historical heritage and harmoniously fits the past into the present. The apartment is located in the heart of Lviv on Hutsulska Street in an old Neo-Renaissance building of the late XIX century. The couple of architects, who own the apartment, undertook the implementation of this renovation project. The project at the intersection of styles and eras, in places on the border of traditional design imagination: The apartment was in disrepair, so it was actually saved by architects, reconstructed and completely redesigned. In particular, the living room ceiling and kitchen floor had to be dismantled and reinforced, as many wooden beams turned out to be rotten. The lost elements of the parquet were restored, and the kitchen floor, pre-installed with heating, was covered with natural marble.

Architects struggled with narrow rooms and limited space with the help of mirrors and clever placement of furniture. During the work in the living room, small murals were found, so the lamps were mounted with special care. The function of the shelves in the living room is now performed by two beams left from the house of Christina’s greatgrandfather in 1871, on which he himself carved inscriptions when he built it. Unfortunately, the house has not survived, so these beams are especially important for the architect. The interior doors of the apartment, dating from the end of the XIX century, were cleaned of numerous layers of paint and left under matte varnish. The apartment on Hutsulska Street is a place where the figures of the famous Ukrainian architect Ivan Levynsky and the British inventor Count Rumford intersected in an unexpected way: a traditional stove from the factory of the first was reincarnated into a large open fireplace using the technology of the second.

“We wanted to show that an old apartment can remain authentic and at the same time filled with elements of modern human life. We love when we have challenges, so we willingly undertook to implement the boldest ideas: from the yard - aluminum windows from ceiling to floor, preserved the authenticity of the facade, made an open fireplace. “There will be no traction”, “all the smoke in the house” - these are superstitions. We have proved that this is not the case. They left some kitsch doors, parquet, walls, tiles, not ashamed of their appearance, and opposed this kitchen for 40-50 thousand dollars, ”says the co-author of the project, Khrystyna Badzyan. The kitchen really deserves special attention: the multifunctional light kitchen table and lockers from a nut without doors provide convenient and fast use of space.

The windows of the main facade were restored according to the old technology, leaving the original fittings. The decision to put a bathroom in the bedroom was justified by the opportunity to open the windows wide and enjoy the sounds of the city. “I just can’t imagine a bathroom without a window, this is the most important room where the day begins. After the renovation, we still lacked a little light and we decided to just drill another additional round window, ”explains Khrystyna.

It is worth noting that in the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom there is no overhead light at all. To make the children’s room isolated, the bedroom was also redesigned. The door was moved to a light wall with an open vintage wardrobe, which is over 150 years old, and a glass top. The place where the door used to stand was left. In the corridor there is an old Ukrainian closet of the middle of the XIX century, which the architects decided not to restore.

The main emotional and semantic accent of the interior space was the corridor in the working block, which we completely lined with steel sheets, on which we placed symbolic hieroglyphs from different profiles of metal structures, and finally placed an installation of suspended steel rectangles “Soul of iron”. ZINCHUK NATALYA

133

FOUNDER OF THE ARCHITECTURAL OFFICE «ZELEMIN»

Your project won a prize in the competition. How do you plan to apply the jury’s appreciation for further development? ZN: This is a good motivation. In my opinion, winning projects is not as important for our company as for the facilities themselves. Especially when it is an architectural monument of national importance. Victories attract attention to them, direct public focus. Tell us about the project that won a prize. We have three such projects this year. The first is the Northern Hill, which is part of the «Malogoloskivsky Hills» complex in Lviv. When conceiving this residential area, the goal was to create a complex surrounded by greenery, with a unique microclimate, separated from the urban part of the city by Warsaw Street, with a full cycle of infrastructure. The residential area, located on the terrain next to the forest park, has a rather unique solution of pedestrian courtyards for residents located on stylobates. The next two prizes are combined into one global and large-scale restoration project of the Zhovkva Castle complex, which is very important for us. Adapting historic buildings is incredibly difficult and interesting. Bringing them back to life, we need to delve not only into the history of architecture, but also the community, city, country. Tell us about your studio. How long have you been working in the field of architecture? Our company is over 20 years old. All this time we are engaged in architectural design. It was started by two people in ‘96 with small and funny tasks. Now our facilities are a team effort and a source of pride for me. The ability to share knowledge and experience, the ability to hear the opinion of each of the participants in the process always gives a stunning result and incredibly consolidates. Tell us, what is it like to be the head of an architectural studio? In our conditions, every time it is a choice between a decision: not to betray your principles, for which you come to the profession, and to provide all employees with work and proper remuneration. Do you have a special style or trademark in

architecture? It is difficult to single out anything but quality. More important for us are the basic principles in the approach to design, which, in our opinion, should be professed by all architects. That is, an analytical approach to design, functional clarity and convenience and, as a result, expressive architecture. In my opinion, only in such a sequence can an interesting and emotional product appear, one that will attract attention and you will want to use it, or at least be close. What are the principles of your studio? It seems that the Hippocratic oath should be taken not only by physicians, supplementing the above «Do no harm» - a very important principle, because in the pursuit of ambition it is very easy to cross the line where to stop. What are you working on now? We do not betray our challenges. Adaptation of historical sites is the most ambitious and interesting, in my opinion, projects. The main profile of the last two years has been medical institutions. We are also currently developing multi-storey residential architecture, interior design, which we are also working on, and, of course, public spaces. We continue to work with another winner of the competition - the project of renovation of Zhovkva Castle Park, which grows into a social project. What is your general impression of the Ukrainian Urban Awards competition? It is very cool that there is a platform for reviewing current Ukrainian projects. So this year, looking at the nominees, I wanted to go to Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odessa to watch live projects of colleagues. And, of course, it encourages development, you see strong players and you want to become even better. Give professional advice to young architects of Ukraine. Not all young people, coming to the Faculty of Architecture, realize that it is not just a profession, it is a way of life and thinking, it is a constant search for the «perfect solution». They come to this later.

The city of Zhovkva is one of the «ideal» Renaissance cities that are best preserved in Ukraine. Zhovkva Castle became the main object of the city. In 1594 its construction was started by the crown hetman Stanislav Zholkevsky. The castle was designed by the Italian architect Paolo de Ducato Clemensi and Lviv architects Pavlo Shchaslyvy, Pavlo Rymlyanyn and Ambrosiy Prykhlyny. From 1674 to 1696, King Jan Sobieski of Poland turned the building into a royal residence, built side buildings and laid out a park. At the same time, the main entrance portico was built. Lithuanian Prince Mykhailo Kazimir Radyvyl reconstructed and completely rebuilt the halls and apartments of the palace in the 1740s. The palace portico was then supplemented with a solid arcade.

In the second half of the 18th and mid-19th century in the buildings administrative services and service apartments were located. Some of the buildings were dismantled for building materials and the defensive moat in front of the castle was filled in, and in 1847 the entrance portico

was dismantled. Restoration of the building began in the late 19th century, but in 1915 retreating Russian troops burned down the building. Measures to restore it, carried out in the 1920s, took place in complete disregard of the methodological principles of scientific restoration. Then only the palace building avoided a complete relocation of building structures.

The modern restoration and adaptation of the castle should stimulate a powerful economic impetus to the development of the city. Given the mental attachment to the historical heritage and the dream that Zhovkva residents want to realize, the restoration project proposed by the Zelemin architectural office will be a well-considered compromise between the key method of restoration and the views shared by Zhovkva residents, Western Ukrainians and explorers of castle buildings. The utilitarian functions will provide the object with constant care and capitalization. The castle will become the main public, historical, artistic and educational center of Zhovkva.

KATERУNA RУBENCHUK

143

ARCHITECT OF THE ARCHITECTURAL WORKSHOP «SYMMETRY»

Your project won a prize in the competition. How do you plan to apply the jury’s appreciation for further development? It was incredibly nice to receive the award from Christos Passas himself. Recognition of our project by international architects adds confidence, confirms that we are moving in the right direction. This is a big plus to the company’s CV. We are also glad that more people in Ukraine will hear about multi-storey cross-glued wooden houses and this will contribute to the development of wooden construction. Tell us about the project that won a prize. This project was carried out as part of the International Open Source Wood Challenge, organized by the Metsä Group, a manufacturer of glued timber (Finland). The project won first place. It should be noted that Finnish architects have relatively recently made changes to building codes, which allowed the construction of multistorey buildings of wood. During my internship in Helsinki at Lahdelma & Mahlamäki, Reiner Mahlamäki told me that he had once designed a reinforced concrete timber museum, which surprised the authorities as to why the timber museum would not be made of wood. This case also prompted a revision of the design standards in favor of wooden buildings. The presented project is a wooden high-rise building a porous high-rise building that combines vernacular structures with green terraces in an urban environment. The rapid pace of urbanization, which determines the importance of preserving each plot of land, determines the popularity of high-rise buildings. Advances in wood construction have made it possible to erect high-rise buildings from solid wooden columns to 12 floors. The combination of two modules allows you to create a porous structure of high-rise buildings with «holes» -terraces for greenery. Tell us about your studio. How long have you been working in the field of architecture? Architectural workshop «Symmetry» was founded in 1992 by our father Mykola Rybenchuk. My sister and I were born into an architectural family in which everything is based on architecture: all conversations, travels, books, hobbies, acquaintances - everything has always been and is connected with architecture. So we can say that my sister and I have been in the field of architecture since birth. Do you have a special style or trademark in architecture?

Drawing inspiration from the vernacular landscapes of the Carpathian Mountains, where our roots come from, we take on the responsibility of creating new environments for people with respect for history and nature. What are the principles of your studio? Logical thinking, functional distribution of processes in combination with inspiration, revealing the emotional potential of space, precision, attention to detail are our main tools in the process of creating architecture. We like to solve problems and create comfortable spaces for residents and visitors of the designed houses. What are you working on now? Architectural workshop «Symmetry» is engaged in the design of both residential and public buildings, combining the experience of design in a historically formed environment. We are working on very different objects: renovation of an industrial building, restoration, residential architecture, sacred building, medical centers, landscaping, interior design. More details about our projects can be found on the workshop website www. symmetry.com.ua What is your general impression of the Ukrainian Urban Awards competition? The establishment of this competition last year was a longawaited and desirable event for the entire architectural community of Ukraine. We submitted our works without hesitation, because we understood the importance of such a competition for the development of Ukrainian architecture. We did not doubt the prestige of the competition, as the organizers have already achieved great success in holding the annual Interiorgoda competition. A good opportunity to present the work of the year, get acquainted with the work of colleagues, listen to interesting lectures by famous architects. Such a competition will create healthy competition between architects and improve the quality of Ukrainian architecture, bringing it to the international level. It would be good if every architect, designing the object, thought whether it would be a shame to present it to colleagues and the public at the Ukrainian Urban Awards. Who would you like to see on the jury next year? Among those I know personally are Ansi Lassila (OOPEAA, Helsinki), Rainer Mahlamäki (Lahdelma & Mahlamäki, Helsinki).

V-SCAPE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT IVAN FEDYANIN WAS INVITED TO THE V HOUSE PROJECT AS ONE OF THE BEST REPRESENTATIVES OF MODERN LANDSCAPE DESIGN IN UKRAINE. V HOUSE PROJECT IS A PRIVATE RESIDENCE, WHICH WAS DEVELOPED AND IMPLEMENTED BY TOP UKRAINIAN ARCHITECT SERGEY GOTVYANSKY AND NOTTDESIGN STUDIO. Despite the outwardly minimalist design, the V House landscaping and landscaping project features a modern and high-tech approach to creating landscape architecture. Every decision, every bush here is not just a seasonal whim, but part of a holistic concept, moderate and stylish, like the residence itself, like its interior. Therefore, the mood that is created inside the building does not disappear from the outside, but accompanies the residents in the open air. In the achieved effect, not only the carefully designed project, but also the content itself played a big role.

Plants were chosen personally by Ivan Fedyanin. To do this, he went to the German nursery Lorberg, where he found the necessary pines and junipers in the form of «bonsai», and besides them - large-sized trees, perennial grasses, bushes of mountain pines. Planted on the site, the plants emphasized the architecture and style of V House, adding freshness and liveliness to the project. However, landscape architecture is not only bushes and trees.
