hroughout February, Mid-Continent Public Library will offer programming that explores local Black history in honor of Black History Month. Viewers can expect to see speaking engagements and lectures on Black history, like the Black genealogy session with a researcher on the subject, as well as more unconventional events, like the interactive musical “Tales from the Black West” and a magic show exploring the life of Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige. “The Library’s Community Programming team works to organize programs for customers, and they make choices based on customer interest and past response to programs we’ve held before (if folks loved
Satchel Paige magic show and valued the program, we try to bring that program back),” Community Relations Specialist Emily Becker said in an email interview. “MCPL offers Black History Month programs each year, and our team strives to provide a variety of different topics and programs for different ages so everyone can attend.” Zoom-based events will be available to those with an internet connection at home. The others — such as the musical and a George Washington Carver presentation — will be delivered to various branches across the library system. Becker said each of the programs offers something special. “Personally, I’m excited for all and would hate to pick a favorite! I will say I love that we have numerous

Becker said she’s been surprised to learn how much contribution there has been from notable Black figures in local history. “Aside from our programs, the Library offers a great deal of resources (books, online resources, etc.), and something that I’ve found greatly interesting from these are how many visionary folks in Black History are from the Midwest or right here in the metro. There are many names you see on bridges and street names, and often you pass by them every day without knowing the history.” “Many of these names are important Black Kansas Citians who worked to improve life for all of us! I think it’s important to know our history because it informs why things are the way they are today,” she added. Responding to a question about the importance of this year’s Black History Month in light of erasure of racial awareness at the school level with anti-Critical Race Theory legislation, Becker said the library remained to committed to fulfilling its mission of access to all patrons. “MCPL is proud to offer Black History Month programs every year and resources year-round. Ensuring access to information is a key part of the Library’s mission, and we feel this has always been - and will always be - vital for communities,” she said. Garantizar el acceso a la información es una parte clave de la misión de la Biblioteca, y creemos que esto siempre ha sido, y siempre será, vital para las comunidades”, concluyó.
