Latino-centered West Bottoms gallery welcomes new globe sculpture installation authored by migrant artist

The art gallery is hosting Kansas City Art Institute alum and Guatemalan Cesar Lopez’s Lopez’s exhibition “Equidistant”, an exploration of the literal shape of the world through a mixed media presentation centering on the globe. “I want to articulate a world of my own construction,” Lopez said, naming the revisionist cartographer Richard Buckminster Fuller who famously showed the world map as a single island. That was a two-dimensional piece. Lopez is pushing further with three dimensions. “We can reorient the map,” he said. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a large globe constructed with painted aluminum. It’s an evocative skeleton of a sphere de-familiarizes the globe and may arouse something different than the pale blue dot of our imaginations or the classic Mercator Projection. It’s both highly conceptual and highly personal. Lopez sees his own work as an “alternative to the globe as a proposition,” adding “as an immigrant, that’s something important to me.” “It’s about a personal search for

La galería de arte está albergando la exhibición “Equidistante”, del ex alumno del Instituto de Arte de Kansas City y guatemalteco César López, una exploración de la forma literal del mundo a través de una presentación de medios mixtos centrada en el globo. “Quiero articular un mundo de mi propia interpretación”, comentó López, nombrando al cartógrafo revisionista Richard Buckminster Fuller, quien mostró el mapa del mundo como una sola isla. Ésa era una pieza bidimensional. López va más allá con las tres dimensiones. “Nosotros podemos reorientar el mapa”, dijo. La pieza central de la exposición es un gran globo construido con aluminio pintado. Es un esqueleto evocador de una esfera que desfamiliariza el globo y puede despertar algo diferente al punto azul pálido de nuestra imaginación o la clásica proyección de Mercator. Es a la vez muy conceptual y muy personal. López ve su propio trabajo como una “alternativa al mundo como propuesta”, y agrega que “como inmigrante, eso es algo importante para mí”. “Se trata de una búsqueda personal de

Developing those relationships over the course of years. Why don’t I try to bring some of this artwork to KC?” Gallery Bogart opened with Dialogo Figurativo, a painting exhibition by Cuban artist Abel Massot, whom Bogart met while traveling. While each is a Latino artist, Bogart said part of his mission is to show how vast and varied contemporary Hispanic art is. “People view Latin American art in a very narrow line,” Bogart said. “Latin American arts is a big niche. There’s so many different art schools and different artists.” Gallery Bogart, 1400 Union Avenue, Kansas City, Mo., will host a reception for Lopez’s show on Feb. 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. Lopez’s “Equidistant” will show at the gallery until the end of March.

La Galería Bogart, 1400 Union Avenue, Kansas City, Mo., ofrecerá una recepción para la exposición de López el 10 de febrero de 5 a 8 p. m. “Equidistante” de López estará en exhibición en la galería hasta finales de marzo.
