s Kansas City Public School D A faces a shrinking student body and a school system made up of older building, the district has made the drastic decision of proposing closure of 10 schools, some of which may be closed within this calendar year. The school has worked with a national consultant to draft a multi-year strategic plan called Blueprint 2030, 2030, which seeks to enhance the district’s educational ability. The plan calls for closure of two high schools and eight elementary schools. In the fall of 2023, Central High School, Longfellow Elementary School and Troost Elementary would close. These students would be transferred elsewhere, and Central would be used as a professional learning building or a temporary site to house students during renovations or construction elsewhere.

Similar to Central High School, Northeast High School could serve as a professional development or “swing” site. Melcher Elementary would merge with new construction of a rebuilt King Elementary and Northeast High School. Faxon Elementary might have a future as a site of a future district project.

The consultants also recommended the creation of three additional schools: South Middle School, which would open fall 2024; a new King Elementary in fall 2026 and an unnamed elementary school that would go up in the historic Northeast neighborhood. How is the public reacting to the closures? “This is the school to keep,” read a headline from KCUR covering the meetings, which it’s described as contentious. Citizens have been vocal about protecting schools they have a personal connection to and schools in their neighborhoods that serve family members or once were their own institutions when they were children. Initially, the board planned to vote on the plan in December, but that final vote was pushed back to January 11.
