Ahora en su año 38, el programa de becas ha otorgado más de $8 millones en premios a casi 5,000 becarios. “Sólo he estado con HDF durante tres ciclos de becas como personal de tiempo completo; sin embargo, como asesor académico anterior, siempre fue emocionante ver a mis alumnos convertirse en becarios de HDF, y el orgullo que conlleva, como comunidad”, dijo Alex Pérez, Director del Programa de Becas. La retribución promedio es de $1,000 informó Pérez, pero la cantidad específica por becario varía. Para aquellos que van a uno de los 22 colegios y universidades de la región, los estudiantes obtienen una segunda beca que puede igualar el monto de la concesión original. For those going to one of 22 colleges and universities in the region, students get a second scholarship that can match the original award amount. Currently, Pérez said there are 72 scholars who attend a college or university with funding from the Hispanic Development Fund. as it is competitive and we have more need than resources,” Pérez said. “Of course, students must be of Hispanic or Latino/x heritage, attended and graduate from the Greater Kansas City metro area.” Pérez said this is a major benefit the program provides to the area’s scholarship, a resource that does not discriminate based on documentation. “For me, it’s particularly exciting to see the life changing opportunity that our scholarship continues to provide for undocumented students. The past three scholarship cycles, we’ve had between 15-18% of our scholarship recipients not have U.S. citizenship, and we are proud to recognize their hard work and academic goals, not punish them for lack of documents,” Pérez said. “For many families, it’s not about the amount awarded, it’s about being validated and supported,” she added. Hispanic Development Fund scholars have gone on to be NASA interns, entrepreneurs, educators, engineers — “ … every career you can think of, HDF scholars are doing it!” “Our scholarship is also open to students pursuing a trade/certificate; we value all education and support the vast skill set and talent of our community. Also, It’s neat to see multiple generations of HDF scholars, we have alumni who are now proud parents of HDF scholar(s) and some are helping us to fundraise for more scholarship opportunities.” Interested in applying but not sure where to start? Pérez said the foundation would offer scholarship workshops both virtually and in person. Los beneficiarios deben ser latinos y deben demostrar una necesidad financiera y excelencia académica, pero no están obligados a demostrar la ciudadanía estadounidense para calificar para la beca. Tanto los futuros graduados como los graduados de preparatoria son bienvenidos. Los solicitantes también deben presentar un ensayo y son evaluados por su trabajo y experiencia como voluntarios. “Siempre alentamos a los estudiantes a que realmente le den a su solicitud toda su atención y el tiempo que se merece, ya que es competitiva y tenemos más necesidades que recursos”, dijo. “Por supuesto, los alumnos deben ser de ascendencia hispana o latina, y asistir y graduarse en el área metropolitana de Kansas City”. Pérez comentó que éste es un gran beneficio que brinda el programa a la beca del área, un recurso que no discrimina por documentación. “Para mí, es particularmente emocionante ver la oportunidad de cambiar la vida que nuestra beca continúa brindando a los estudiantes indocumentados. En los últimos tres ciclos de becas, hemos tenido entre el 15 y el 18 % de nuestros becarios sin ciudadanía estadounidense, y nos enorgullece reconocer su arduo trabajo y metas académicas, no castigarlos por falta de documentos”, dijo Pérez. “Para muchas familias, no se trata de la cantidad otorgada, se trata de ser validadas y apoyadas”, agregó. Los becarios del Fondo de Desarrollo Hispano se han convertido en pasantes de la NASA, empresarios, educadores, ingenieros “... cada carrera que se te ocurra, ¡los becarios de HDF la están haciendo!” “Nuestra beca también está abierta a estudiantes que buscan un oficio/certificado; valoramos toda la educación y apoyamos el vasto conjunto de habilidades y el talento de nuestra comunidad. Además, es genial ver varias generaciones de becarios de HDF, tenemos ex alumnos que ahora son padres orgullosos de becarios de HDF y algunos nos están ayudando a recaudar fondos para más oportunidades de becas”. ¿Estás interesado en presentar una solicitud pero no sabes por dónde empezar?
