I stand out and greet folks coming in at every Broadway show and have developed relationships with them over the years that I will miss a lot. I also built an incredible staff here over the last eight and a half years that are not just employees, but friends as well,” he said in written responses. Baker will officially end his nine-year reign at the theater in May 2023. Lindsey Rood-Clifford has been tapped as his successor. The east Kansas City is the venue of choice for A-List acts that come through the city, including marquee acts like Bob Dylan. When the spotlight shadow of Mary hit the towers at the back of the audience, the silhouette was completely unplanned but a special touch of theatre magic,” he said. Baker said the theater took some risks with certain shows, specifically naming the productions “Million Dollar Quartet”, “On Your Feet”, “If/Then” and “Something Rotten.” “All were great shows but somewhat unknown to the audience,” he said. “Those that attended these shows loved them and those that skipped them heard that they missed out on some incredible entertainment.” “All of these shows helped the audience to trust that what we put on the stage, whether they know the title or not, will be good quality entertainment that they will enjoy.” Baker said he and his wife intend to do more traveling “like most retired folks.” He’ll still be helping the theater with their Broadway Series and, who knows, he may find himself working as an usher or working on his own musical. It’s a place that has a special quality he said he hopes all Kansas Citians see too. “I hope the Kansas City community realizes what a gem they have here that very few other venues in the country can hold a candle to,” he said.
