to Art as Mentorship, Mentorship, a music education nonprofit run by local Grammy-nominated rockers Making Movies. Musical talent from the program will be showcased at their upcoming 2022 Celebrate AMERI’KANA music festival. The event shares a name with a 2019 album released by the fusion Latino rock group, which spawned a body of work that interrogates the meaning of Americana, a genre that traditionally features just U.S. artists. “That’s a hemisphere, not just a country,” Making Movies vocalist and Art as Mentorship founder Enrique Chi said. “Even the spelling — we’re tricking you into saying it in Spanish.” Chi said “Ameri’kana” the album held a special place for him in the band’s catalog because of the involvement of fellow musician Ruben Blades — a prolific Panamanian salsa legend and someone who Chi called “one of the most important writers in Latin American history, period”— period”— and the radio station-like format of the record giving the listener a sense of a larger world within and outside of the space of the music. “We were dreaming big about this album,” Chi said. The band created a music documentary that then carried the same name where they interviewed musicians from a range of styles, including blues
guitarist Cedric Burnside and Los Lobos. Their argument was that, in fact, these were the keepers of the tradition known as Americana.

The migration of a stringed, African instrument that later became the banjo; the sprawling influence of Caribbean song style; the migration of New Orleans jazz to Kansas City — none of these obeyed a national boundary, Chi argued. “I like to shake people free and make them think,” he said. The musician said he’s recently learned about new plurality in his own personal story. Though Panamanian by birth, Chi said he’s recently learned that there’s a Chinese great-grandfather in his family tree that arrived as a railroad worker. His family tree also contains a grandmother born in Alabama. “Any human being is insanely complicated,” he said. So too, then, is a genre of human expression like Americana. A more radically open vision of what this genre can be will be presented at the 2022 Celebrate AMERI’KANA festival. It will happen on Sept. 10 at the Crossroads music venue. Chi said he’s not at liberty to announce who will play alongside Making Movies and the musicians from Art as Mentorship,, but he’s opened to torship suggestions via social media shoutout.
