Poison oak, siding in need of replacement, a junk pileup in the driveway where a vehicle might have gone — the works to do. To top it all off, the city cited her with a code violation. Local handyman Robert Flores found Mendoza’s garage and gave it a face lift with new siding and doors. He added a security light to illuminate the newly junk-free space. And he did it all for free. In March, Flores will enter his sixth year working with homes through Habitaciones Para Latinos Association (HPLA), the Kansas City-area home repair service and nonprofit he founded that furnishes manpower and materials for free fixes to low income residents. Explaining how HPLA was started over an email interview, Flores said he connects the project’s origins with the loss of his youngest daughter to cancer and the sudden death of his only grandson in a motorcycle accident. “So, I now work in his honor as well. He worked for Aramark as a chief and was just beginning to live the American dream. I miss both my family members so much,” he wrote. The anti-immigrant character of the 2016 election also played a role. Flores said the negative characterizations of immigrants made him think of his great-great grandfather, a Mexican cattle farmer who came to the U.S. generations ago. “Believe it or not. Mexicans and other Hispanics have been a God Send to this country and to see these immigrants categorized as criminals upset me,” he wrote. He was then working as a contractor for D&R Services and noticed that many of the homeowners were in financial duress and falling prey to payday lending services. He incorporated HPLA as a 501c3 charity to make these repairs as donations. The materials, labor and volunteer assistance Flores might require on more complex

The couple’s children also pitch in supporting the project in a range of capacities from case work to thank you note writing to prayers, Flores said. “All donations go to the clients. No leader, volunteer or helper gets money” as a salary, he said. He sometimes offers his volunteers, but their time is otherwise provided with nothing expected in return. “ … We do run out of money every year so we can help as many as possible,” he wrote. “The need is still great.” Moving into this year, Flores said he’s like to work to build similar charitable handyman services through churches in the area. The retiree is also on a hunt for a young apprentice who might want to handle repairs in the future, too. Flores doesn’t keep an exact tally of every home he’s worked with, but he placed it around 20 to 25 in 2021 and over a hundred over the lifetime of the project. Some homes get multiple visits, he explained. A woman named Burnice Clark had a kitchen faucet repaired by Flores and then, after a car drove through her lawn and damaged her home, was able to get a fence repair from HPLA HPLA.. Flores has continued to visit Clark’s home adding new carpet, a water connection to a new fridge and new fencing for the second car that drove through her property. “My wife calls her regularly to stay in touch as she has very little family,” he wrote. At Mendoza’s Armourdale home, Flores has continued to give there too, fixing the furnace, adding new shingles to the roof and even performing yard work. Flores said the home currently has no code violations, but he’s not convinced he’s done enough there. “There are currently no code violations but the family has been urged to paint the house. There is much more needed at this property but for now the family is safe and secure. (To be Continued),” he wrote.
