For Portillo, Chente’s music belongs in the pantheon of greats like Elvis or Frank Sinatra. “It’s world renowned.” Portillo said he learned about Chente’s passing from a social media post authored by a Puerto Rican friend, evidence –he said– of how far reaching and omnipresent his music was. For Portillo, the music served as a vessel to transmit Mexican culture to the broader public. “It was amazing. He was an interpreter,” he said. Outpourings of support came from a range of voices, including country singer George Strait wrote in a tweet, “One of my heroes. May he Rest In Peace and may God bless and comfort his family. Hasta la Cruz Chente!!” President Joe Biden also tweeted his condolences, too.

Remembrances of the singer are recalling his life-spanning career in music that starts with getting his first guitar at age 8 and seeing an icon from a previous generation, Pedro Infante, on the big screen. He boldly proclaimed to his mother as a child that he would achieve similar fame predicting his career success in the ‘70s, which would end in his being named “El Rey,” or “the king.” In his best known music, Fernandez plays a scorned lover with bittersweet intensity embodying both the valiant, ever strong male and the wounded, set aside lover. With the backing of the delicate frill of ranchero strings and horns, the character he plays promises to persist despite the pain. Sometimes, he announces his departure, as in Fernandez’ “Ya Me Voy Para Siempre.” Portillo said he’s been thinking of the song since the singer’s passing and its prescience. Portillo said the songs were about more than just love lost and could be seen as the singer’s awareness of mortality, perhaps even his own. “He knew,” Portillo said. “I’m getting emotional thinking about it.” Speaking as a musician on another musician, Portillo said Fernandez’s legacy is chiefly a body of work that includes some of the best entries in the Mexican music songbook in recent history. “He delivered the goods.”
