The gallery currently holds about 40 pieces and has shown almost 20 local artists. The space has also proven itself to be a viable commercial success too. The gallery has sold about $1,500 worth of artwork. The gallery has attracted the attention of local schools Kansas City Community College and Guadalupe Center Schools. Students from these institutions will be developing a 10week business project to be developed at the gallery. Hernandez said he intends to offer more classes to young artists as well as their parents and grandparents. She’s also planning a beer and paint-style class that will happen in late August.

What stuck out to him was how good the musician was and the fact that he was homegrown. “[Local artists], they don’t realize their potential,” said gallery owner Phyllis Hernandez To explore and showcase this potential, he and Hernandez opened Sala de Arte in May. Hernandez, an artist herself, said initially she wanted to create a place for just her own practice. The art space has grown to host not only other artists but also live events like classes and performances in the time since its opening. “It was important to open a gallery in the community so youth can see what can be created,” Hernandez said. The lifting of pandemic related measures and appetite for local events have made the gallery a local staple in the first few months of operation. The gallery’s opening May 8 recorded about 70 unique visitors to the space.

Garcia-Roman is a 22-year-old Northeast native who has kept the area central to his work at the gallery. “We want to create experiences that match the people of the community,” he said. Hernandez said she wanted to create a space for the neighborhood to understand its own artistic wealth. Hernandez repeated something that’s often said in her part of the city: “ … if you want to make it big you move out of the Northeast.” “[At the gallery], people can see how talented people in our community are.,” she said.
