ne of the 17 artists who will be O shown in The Whole Person’s Person’s coming art show Expressions react-
ed to news of her selection first with disbelief. “She couldn’t speak for about five minutes,” Resource Development and Community Relations Manager Terri Goddard said. “She was silent and then the sobs started. She said, ‘I’ve never been chosen for anything before.’” The March 5 exhibit is a showcase exclusively for artists with a disability. It’s an annual tradition in its 11th year for the organization, which advocates for a fairer world for individuals with a disability. As in years previous, this edition of the annual show features a wide variety of artistic mediums, including ceramics, photography and live musical performance. The art show will also include a silent auction as in the previous years; the sale starts on Friday, Feb. 26. The art shown for audiences at Rochester Brewing and Roasting Company will be not only of the still visual but of the living, moving type: quadriplegic drummer Alex Fraser will offer a solo appearance showing his unique, adapted style of percussion.
For those who can’t or prefer not to appear at the show in person but still want to explore the art, The Whole Person will offer a live video stream of the show hourly on the opening day of the exhibit. In accordance with public health guidelines, a limited number of audiences will be allowed into the gallery at a time. Intermittently, the show will be joined by the contributing artists themselves. In her opinion, Goddard said the artists can’t and shouldn’t be judged on an adapted or level creative standard. “Art is art, and talent is talent,” she said.
Distance, by Jasmine Ali. Distance, “I create my pieces that express my passions, thoughts, and views on the world. My work allows myself to be heard in ways I never thought was possible. The ‘Distance’ piece brings back the 2020 year with the virus. It shows that a young man is indoors, distancing himself from the madness of the world. He wants to go out and be with people but he knows that he has to keep a distance from everyone and the world.”
Caged, by Alex Fraser. Caged, “I started creating art two years ago when I took a painting class at Johnson County Community College. The themes of my art are usually abstract, but I do also create some logos and small still life pieces. As a kid, I was always creating with legos, and never got into physical art until later in my life. I use a touch screen laptop to create my art on Autodesk Sketchbook. It means so much to participate in Expressions! After my accident in 2014, I had a hard time finding hobbies and things to become passionate about. I’m so glad that I found how to create art and I want to share it with as many people as I can!”
