Volunteers needed for yard cleanup

The Whole Person is still seeking volunteers to weed, prune, rake and more for area renters and homeowners limited by disability. The cleanup of metro area yards on both sides of the state line is scheduled for Oct. 2 and 3 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. “The more volunteers we get, the more (yards) we get to clean up and the more people we get to help,” says Kelly Grooms, volunteer program specialist with The Whole Person (TWP) (TWP).. As of Sept. 2, 103 volunteers had signed up – enough to clean 23 of the 45 yards registered for the Planting Independence event. TWP is hoping to sign up at least another 300 volunteers. For everyone’s safety, the nonprofit center for independent living will observe all local Covid-19 guidelines for groups. Volunteers will wear masks covering nose and mouth and social distance with no more than 10 in a crew at each cleanup site. TWP will provide an ample supply of hand sanitizer at each location. Now in its fourth year, this is TWP TWP’s ’s eighth Planting Independence event. The yard cleanups, formerly held every spring and fall, have helped 187 people with all kinds of disabilities from physical to cognitive, mental, hearing and vision. Many are among the 2,343 people TWP served in 2019. Beginning in 2019, TWP held one Planting Independence event in the spring. It’s taking place in October because the pandemic cancelled the spring event. Volunteers will be assigned to a day and cleanup site where they will report at 8 a.m. Most teams generally finish by 12 p.m. “Some have finished in a couple of hours, some it has taken five,” Grooms

pág.9 says. “It varies on the size of the yard and the number of volunteers at the home.” Besides being masked, volunteers are asked to bring their own gardening gloves and tools. Those who don’t have any can borrow from TWP TWP’s ’s developing tool shed. “We have gotten tools donated from the public, and with the help of our lead sponsor for this event, Westlake Ace Hardware, we have slowly built a tool shed,” Grooms says. “(Volunteers) can check out the tools and return them at the end of the day.” TWP welcomes individuals and groups of all ages. The only requirement is physical ability. Volunteers as young as 7 accompanied by an adult, seniors up to age 65, church groups, Girl Scout troops, Boys Scout troops, entire families and business colleagues signing up as a group have participated in past cleanups. “We like it when parents instill giving back to our community at an early age,” Grooms says. TWP schedules cleanups for yards on a first-come, first-served basis. “Those people we do not get to this year will be at the top of the list for spring,” Grooms says. TWP serves people with disabilities of any age regardless of English-language fluency. Planting Independence will take place rain or shine, unless there’s lightning.
