veryone still has to eat during this pandemic, and everyone still needs social interaction. A local nonprofit has provided both for a half-century, and its staff and legion of volunteers carries on. The Shepherd’s Center in Kansas City (Mo.) has 50 volunteers who deliver 13,000 hot meals and vital human contact to homebound seniors weekdays each year. Valiantly facing the risks of COVID-19, they haven’t stopped. “Our mission is to reduce hunger and social isolation,” says Janet Baker, Shepherd’s Center KC’s executive director. “With the pandemic, we’ve had to fundamentally change delivery of our meals.” To protect both the volunteers and their clients, the volunteers wear mask and gloves. They hang the bags containing the meals on the door, knock and then step back six feet to wait until the client picks up the meal. Following every precaution, they have their temperature taken when they show up at the Shepherd’s Center, and they wear a fresh pair of gloves for each client. “Our volunteers have relationships with their clients; they’re friends,” Baker says. “They look forward to the day when their relationships can be happy things again. The power of this is to say that our volunteers are the only contacts they have in a day.” Maria Pérez, 90, is one of many Shepherd’s Center KC’s clients who lives alone and has no emergency contacts. She’s incapacitated as the result of a stroke. Having outlived relatives and friends, she looks forward to hugs and visits from the volunteer who regularly delivers her meals. “Having a hot meal handed to our clients by a very loving volunteer is not just the highlight of their day, but the only human contact some of our clients have,” Baker says. “Often, it’s the only full meal they have in a day. We have no choice but to continue, pandemic or not.”

Habiendo sobrevivido a familiares y amigos,
