KCREP opens 55th season with a classic KCREP abre temporada 55 con un clásico
By Rita Sherrie uando el Teatro de Repertorio de Kansas City montó por última vez Una Gata sobre el Tejado de Zinc, Jason Chanos, estaba allí, viendo la obra de Tennessee Williams ganadora del Premio Pulitzer, por primera vez. El entonces estudiante de posgrado y ahora director artístico interino del KCREP, es responsable de la programación de producciones para la temporada 2019-2020, que comienza el 6 de septiembre. “Esta temporada tiene mi sello. Estoy muy orgulloso de compartir una temporada que creo que será amada por todos los que disfrutan del teatro”, dice Jason. Bajo su liderazgo temporal, el KCREP está levantando el telón en su 55ª temporada con una sorprendente producción de la obra maestra de Williams. No se trata de una reactivación del guión de Williams de 1954 ó de la revisión de 1974, sino de “una especie de híbrido”, para el cual el KCREP obtuvo un permiso especial del patrimonio del dramaturgo. “Williams es uno de mis autores favoritos, pero nunca he hecho uno de sus shows. Han pasado 23 años desde que nuestros mecenas vieron Una Gata, así que pensé que si íbamos a traerlo de vuelta, sería mejor que volviera jovial, y creo lo hicimos. Tenemos uno de los elencos más fantásticos jamás ensamblados”, refiere Jason. Una Gata está ambientada en el sur en la década de 1950. Es una instantánea volátil en el tiempo de una familia problemática y disfuncional. Ellos se han reunido en la plantación familiar para celebrar el 65 cumpleaños de su patriarca, Big Daddy. El viejo magnate se está muriendo de cáncer, un hecho ocultado a él y a su esposa por sus dos hijos, Brick y Gooper, hasta una confrontación explosiva entre Brick y Big Daddy durante la fiesta. El primer acto de la obra de tres actos pertenece a Maggie, la apasionada y seductora belleza infructuosamente enamorada de su esposo, Brick, un guapo héroe antiguo del emparrillado convertido en alcohólico. El apasionado monólogo de Maggie establece la escena y el tono de la obra. La célebre estrella de teatro de Kansas City, Vanessa Severo, volverá a interpretar el papel de la encantadora Maggie, la Gata. Su iteración de la esposa sin hijos que pasó de la pobreza a la riqueza será excepcionalmente original. Nunca ha visto Una Gata en el escenario o en una película. “Esperaré hasta después de la obra para ver otras versiones”, dice Vanessa. “Lo que siento en mi corazón es lo que quiero hacer y no estar influenciada por otra cosa”. Tennessee Williams’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play for the first time. Then a graduate student, he’s now interim artistic director of the KCREP, responsible for the lineup of productions for the 20192020 season, which opens Sep. 6. “This season very much has my stamp on it,” Chanos says. “I’m very proud to share a season that I think is going to be loved by everyone who enjoys theater.” Under his temporary leadership, the KCREP is raising the curtain on its 55th season with a surprising production of Williams’s chef-d’oeuvre. It’s not quite a revival of Williams’s 1954 script or 1974 revision, but “kind of a hybrid,” for which the KCREP got special permission from the playwright’s estate. “Williams is one of my favorite authors, but I’ve never done one of his shows. It’s been 23 years since our patrons have seen Cat so I thought if we’re going to bring it back, we better come back swinging, and I think we have. We have one of the most fantastic casts ever assembled,” Chanos says. Cat is set in the South in the 1950s. It’s a volatile snapshot in time of a troubled, dysfunctional family. They’ve gathered at the family plantation to celebrate the 65th birthday of their patriarch, Big Daddy. The old tycoon is dying of cancer, a fact withheld from him and his wife by their two sons, Brick and Gooper until an explosive confrontation between Brick

The first act of the three-act play belongs to Maggie, the passionate, seductive beauty fruitlessly in love with her husband, Brick, a handsome aging hero of the gridiron-turned-alcoholic. Maggie’s impassioned monologue sets the scene and tone of the play. Kansas City’s celebrated stage star, Vanessa Severo will reprise the role of the ravishing Maggie the Cat. Her iteration of the childless rags-to-riches wife will be uniquely original. She’s never watched Cat on stage or film. “I’ll wait until after the play to see other versions,” Severo says. “What I feel in my heart is what I want to do and not be influenced by something else.” She was terrified at first, thinking about playing such a well-known role and decided to tackle it off-book. “It has to be in my head so I can get it in my body because Maggie runs the gamut of everything in her emotional arsenal, and I can’t hold a script and do that,” she explains. The challenge of mounting a classic like Cat that’s been staged untold times since its 1955 Broadway premiere is to “approach it with fresh eyes,” Chanos says. “Lisa Rothe is an adept person who can bring a classic like this back to life.” What may tantalize patrons is speculating on the surprises in this “hybrid” version of Cat. Unlike the 1958 film adaptation, which hid the theme of Brick in order to make it popular, contemporary theater has no such constraints, Chanos says. “Times are different. The version you see now will have a different resonation with the audience.” Severo plays opposite Nathan Darrow, “a very generous, kind actor to be on stage with,” as Maggie’s troubled husband. Cat opens Sep. 6 with evening and matinee performances through Sep. 29. It’s recommended for ages 12 and up. “If you can only see five plays in your life, this should be one of them,” Chanos says. “This is the Mona Lisa.” TANTALIZING PREVIEW For the first time, Chanos will direct his version of A Christmas Carol. Patrons are in for exciting surprises. His version is loyal to Charles Dickens’ beloved novella and wonderfully unique and fresh. “This production is for all intents and purposes a musical, not a traditional musical, but we have a cast with a lot of A-level singers.” Chanos says. “It’s beautiful music beautifully sung in a story of redemption.“ One more teaser: The Ghost of Christmas Past! EDITOR’S NOTE On Sep. 1, Kansas City Repertory Theater announced that it had chosen Stuart Carden as its next artistic director “after a comprehensive nationwide search.” Jason Chanos has served as interim artistic director since former artistic director Eric Rosen stepped down in June 2018.

Lo que puede tentar a los asistentes es especular sobre las sorpresas en esta versión “híbrida” de Una Gata. A diferencia de la adaptación cinematográfica de 1958, que ocultó el tema de Brick para hacerlo popular, el teatro contemporáneo no tiene tales limitaciones, indica Jason. “Los tiempos son diferentes. La versión que ves ahora tendrá una resonancia diferente con el público”. Vanessa es la contraparte de Nathan Darrow, “un actor muy generoso y amable para estar en el escenario”, quien interpreta al problemático esposo de Maggie. Una Gata abre el 6 de septiembre con funciones vespertinas y matinales hasta el 29 de septiembre. Se recomienda para mayores de 12 años. “Si sólo pudieras ver cinco obras en tu vida, ésta debería ser una de ellas. Ésta es la Mona Lisa”, concluye Jason. UN AVANCE TENTADOR Por primera vez, Jason dirigirá su versión de Un Cuento de Navidad. Los asistentes pueden esperar sorpresas emocionantes. Su versión es fiel a la querida novela de Charles Dickens y maravillosamente única y fresca. “Esta producción es para todos los efectos y propósitos un musical, no un musical tradicional; pero tenemos un elenco con muchos cantantes de nivel A”, refiere Jason. “Es una música hermosa, bellamente cantada en una historia de redención”. Un avance más: ¡El Fantasma de Navidades Pasadas! NOTA DE LA REDACCIÓN El 1 de Sept., el teatro Kansas City Repertory anunció que había elegido a Stuart Carden como su próximo director artístico “después de una búsqueda exhaustiva a nivel nacional”. Jason Chanos ha servido como director artístico interino desde que el ex director artístico Eric Rosen renunció en junio de 2018.
