hat began as a two-day celebraL W tion marking the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act has turned into one of the area’s favorite summer festivals. The Whole Person’s fifth annual July fȇte is happening Saturday with a new name, shorter format and more spacious setting. The Main Street Festival, née July Jubilee will take over Washington Square Park across from Union Station and Crown Center. The July 27 festivities run 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. “It’s an open, inclusive and welcoming family-friendly environment that supports The Whole Person,” says Terri Goddard, TWP’s resource development manager. As always, admission is free, and the event promises nonstop fun for all, fabulous food and electrifying mix of musical artists. The lineup offers something for everyone. There’s entertainment in the Kids’ Zone for youngsters ages 2-12 with an adult. Attractions include two bounce houses, lawn games, face painting, balloon artist and more. Booths will be filled by 29 vendors, educators, crafters and businesses offering professional services; handmade gifts; health and wellness products; women’s lingerie; jewelry; personal care products; artwork; self-defense; and personalized merchandise. Ms. Wheelchair America 2020 Hilary Muehlberger will sign autographs and discuss adaptive sports for people with disabilities. Other speakers are Meg Conger, KCMO’s ADA compliance manager and KCMO 2nd District Councilman Dan Fowler. “As this event celebrates the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, they will address accessibility in the city,” Goddard says. Joining the festival to socialize and pose for pictures will be Renaissance Festival characters and members of the 70th Explorers Garrison. On the eclectic entertainment lineup is a performance by TWP’s own 12-voice choir, Tota Voces, followed by Conga Jim and the Coconuts. Nonstop music continues with performances by Shon Ruffin, Bri

El quinto festival anual de julio de The Whole Person se llevará a cabo el sábado con un nuevo nombre, un formato más corto y un entorno más espacioso. El Festival de Main Street, originalmente Jubileo de Julio, se apoderará del parque Washington Square, frente a Union Station y Crown Center. Three food trucks make their Main Street Festival debut, starting with Johnny Jo’s Pizzeria, recognized in February on KCUR as one of the best pizzas in Kansas City by Central Standard’s food critics. For barbecue lovers, there’s The Rub BBQ, one of Central Standard’s food critics’ “favorite barbecue classics.” And for flavor from South-of-the-border, festivalgoers can savor authentic Mexican food and beverages served by Juana Velasquez in her Taco Mobile La Plaza. Pamela Flores, an intern from the University of Missouri-Kansas City connected with Velasquez. “She actually came to us, which was exciting,” Flores says. “We wanted to offer different types of cuisines.” It’s part of TWP’s Hispanic outreach, a priority for Flores. She’s grateful for the access she’s always had to the programs and services for people with disabilities that TWP has provided for 41 years. She wants everyone in the Hispanic community to have that. “Unfortunately, Hispanics are less likely to have access to those resources,” Flores says. Festival guests are encouraged to bring folding chairs or blankets. Service dogs are welcome; pets are not allowed. Most food trucks accept debit/credit cards, but cash is preferred. Two of the Port-aPotties will be ADA-compliant/wheelchair-accessible. Free weekend parking is available at Crown Center; paid parking is available at Union Station. There’s limited on-street parking. A sign language interpreter will be on hand at the festival. Relocating the event to the five-acre Washington Square Park was beneficial, Goddard says. There’s more parking; it’s well-shaded, and it’s on the KC Streetcar route. “This is a day that’s about music and fun, but by coming, people are exposed to people with disabilities and hear about some of the issues and things happening around accessibility in our community and learn about The Whole Person and what we do,” Goddard says. Flores has attended past TWP festivals as a guest. This is the first time she’s been involved in the planning. Se anima a los invitados al festival a traer sillas plegables o mantas. Los perros de servicio son bienvenidos; no se permiten mascotas. La mayoría de los camiones de comida aceptan tarjetas de débito/ crédito, pero se prefiere efectivo. Dos letrinas portátiles serán compatibles con ADA/accesibles para sillas de ruedas. Estacionamiento gratuito de fin de semana está disponible en Crown Center, y de pago en Union Station. Hay estacionamiento limitado en la calle. Un intérprete de lenguaje de señas estará disponible en el festival. Reubicar el evento en el parque Washington Square de cinco acres fue beneficioso, informa Goddard. Hay más estacionamiento; está bien sombreado, y está en la ruta del tranvía KC. “Éste es un día que trata sobre música y diversión, pero al venir, las personas están expuestas a gente con discapacidades y escuchan sobre algunos de los problemas y las cosas que suceden en relación con la accesibilidad en nuestra comunidad y aprenden acerca de The Whole Person y lo que hacemos”, comemta Goddard. Flores ha asistido a festivales TWP anteriores como invitada. Es la primera vez que participa en la planeación. Ella dice: “Será el festival más grande que hemos tenido, una celebración realmente especial de la Ley de Estadounidenses con Discapacidades”.
