against unexpected increases. “In 2018, we will be able to show incoming freshmen the cost of tuition, books and fees for the next four years,” Roubinek says. “It won’t increase more than three percent each year.” In addition, Avila will award students up to $1,000 for a study-travel experience during their junior year. The university will also guarantee students an internship or research opportunity in their field of study and graduation in four years. “Students can use their travel award for education or presenting at a research conference,” Roubinek says. The 33 percent tuition cut won’t apply to international students, but everyone will save a minimum of $200. Avila’s current undergraduate tuition of $28,820 with books and campus fees will drop next fall to $19,900. Avila reports a fall semester enrollment of 1,246 undergraduates and 430 graduate students. The university offers bachelor’s degrees in 60 undergraduate majors and concentrations and master’s degrees in business administration, counseling psychology, education, management, organizational development and psychology. Avila is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet who founded the university in 1916. University President Ron Slepitza announced the new initiatives he called the Avila Promise in a campus assembly last month. “The tuition reset is the thing that gets everyone’s attention, but more important are all these promises put together,” Roubinek says. “At least 35 universities have reset tuition, and there are universities that offer travel awards, but Avila is the only one rolling out tuition reduction, travel award and guaranteed graduation in four years and internship or research experience in one package. It all comes down to student success and bringing accessibility and transparency to students and their families, continuing the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph.”
