ext month, Judge Justine del Muro and Carlos Gomez, president and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City, will receive a commendation from the Consulate of Mexico in Kansas City, a distinction given to influential and important Hispanics for their leadership and cultural advocacy. They will receive the Ohtli Award, the highest recognition granted by the Mexican Government to honor those individuals whose efforts have contributed to the well-being, prosperity and empowerment of Mexican communities abroad. “Ohtli is a Nahuatl word that means road, in the case of the Ohtli Award, means “those who open the way.”, said Consul of Mexico in Kansas City, Alicia Kerber Palma; and added that “Leaders, such as Judge Justine del Muro and Carlos Gómez, have tirelessly committed to advocate for better economic, social and political opportunities for all. At the same time, they are well known for being firm defenders of the many contributions that immigrants bring to this country, working tirelessly to promote the integration and assimilation of immigrants to the American society.” Gomez, 49, recently celebrated his ninth anniversary with the chamber. Speaking to 2Mas2KC on the occasion of his anniversary, Gomez reflected on his successes building a more expansive and bicultural board in spite of his personally being limited to only English. “I was raised to not listen to someone’s words but pay attention to their actions,” he said. “I have a history of that.” When he joined the Hispanic chamber, he worked to build a governing board that’s about one third bilingual. His nine years with the chamber make him the longest standing chief executive. When he started his tenure, the chamber’s membership was at 300 business. Today, it includes 530 businesses. “We’ve been really successful planting ourselves in the Spanish-speaking business community,” he said. “We’ve realized that if we don’t start building these relationships, we’re going to be obsolete.”

Hispana de Kansas City, recibirán una condecoración del Consulado de México en Kansas City, una distinción otorgada a hispanos influyentes e importantes por su liderazgo y apoyo cultural. Ellos recibirán el Premio Ohtli, el reconocimiento más alto otorgado por el Gobierno de México para honrar a aquellos individuos cuyos esfuerzos han contribuido al bienestar, la prosperidad y el fortalecimiento de las comunidades mexicanas en el extranjero. “Ohtli es una palabra náhuatl que significa camino, en el caso del Premio Ohtli, significa “los que abren el camino”, dijo la cónsul titular de México en Kansas City, Alicia Kerber Palma; y añadió que “líderes, como la jueza Justine del Muro y Carlos Gómez, se han comprometido incansablemente a abogar por mejores oportunidades económicas, sociales y políticas para todos. Al mismo tiempo, son muy conocidos por ser firmes defensores de las muchas contribuciones que los inmigrantes aportan a este país, trabajando sin descanso para promover la integración y la asimilación de los inmigrantes a la sociedad estadounidense”. Carlos Gómez, de 49 años, celebró recientemente su noveno aniversario con la Cámara. En declaraciones a 2Mas2KC con motivo de su aniversario, él reflexionó sobre sus éxitos al construir una junta bicultural más extensa, a pesar de que él está limitado sólo al inglés. “Me criaron para no escuchar las palabras de alguien, sino prestar atención a sus acciones”, refirió. “Tengo un historial de ello”. Cuando se unió a la cámara hispana, trabajó para construir una junta de gobierno que es alrededor de un tercio bilingüe. Sus nueve años con la cámara, lo convierten en el director ejecutivo que ha ocupado ese puesto por más tiempo. Cuando empezó en su posición, la membresía de la cámara estaba en 300 negocios. Hoy en día, incluye a 530 empresas. “Hemos tenido mucho éxito al colocarnos en la comunidad empresarial de habla hispana”, dijo. “Nos dimos cuenta que si

“My main concern right now is how are we helping with small business, helping business grow and start up,” Gomez said noting the chamber’s new program to help jump start aspiring entrepreneurs free of charge. The chamber as an institution will be 40 years old in 2017. Gomez and other Ohtli recipients will be honored in a ceremony. Last year recipients were Truman Medical Center’s Community Outreach Director Leo Prieto, Grupo Folklorico Aotonilco founder Maria Chaurand and Affordable Care Act navigator Arturo Ponce. Others recipients include: Jessica Piedra, Ramon Murguia, Mary Lou Jaramillo, John Fierro, Clara Reyes, and Cris Medina. among others.
