Dearest Conscious Life Friends It’s funny how synchronistic things can be isn't it? In our July issue we spoke a lot about depression and overcoming it. We even explored suicide from the perspective of someone, Gerry, who works each day to overcome the desire to do so.

Well, in the last month I have come across many people who are simply not happy with their lives, to the point of being clinically depressed, and some that are, like Gerry, facing the daily struggle at this stage to overcome the terrible urge to commit suicide.

One such person is someone very close to me and has affected me on a very personal level and brought me to the realisation that I too have been feeling down for some time. There is just something about the planet at the moment that is affecting many people in this way.

So, we are working to turn our lives back into happy ones. Through therapy with modalities such as Theta Healing, taking the time to appreciate each other each day and focusing on the good in our lives instead of dwelling on that which is not working. We are fully aware of what we were not happy about and are working to change this by focusing on what we want and what we already have. Things are looking so much brighter already.

We have also started taking Flordis’ Remotiv and find that it is helping us both.

If you too are going through a challenging time at the moment that is causing you stress

and depression – know this – you are NOT alone. Many others are in the same boat as you. We need to open up and talk to each other about what we are going through and together we can turn this boat around.

Reach out to someone that can help you – there are many therapists trained in different modalities that can help you ease the load and see the joy in each day again. Spend time doing things that make you happy and feel alive. Spend time each day thinking of the things, however small that you are grateful for. Exercise – Lisa Raleigh’s monthly workout in our mag is a great guide to follow. Get your health back on track – see our health & beauty natural and healthy intake sections for strategies to do this. Do a daily meditation.

Most importantly, know this: You are loved, You are quite literally made of love, You matter, You are needed by your loved ones.

You are also never alone, no matter what your spiritual beliefs are, the Divine Source Energy is always with you and you are on this earth for a very special reason – to shine your unique light and make the world around a better place for it.

I thought that it may be nice for you to try the mediation that I find helps center, calm and ground me. It only takes a few minutes – 5 or so, and can be done anywhere and anytime.

Mediation to ground and centre yourself • Sit quietly somewhere in your home, garden or office. Feet firmly planted on the floor, or in a cross legged position.

• Centre your energy/thought in your heart space.

• Visualise that energy moving gently down through your body until it leaves through the bottom of your feet, travelling into the centre of mother earth, a part of the all that is.

• The centre is filled with white light.

Gather as much of the light as you want.

• Travel back up until you reach the soles of your feet. Watch as this light travels up and up, through each part of your body, filling it with light and clearing away all negative energies, worries and troubles.

• Allow this light to move with your energy/thought out through the top of your head as a beautiful ball that surrounds you.

• Travel up into the universe, past the planets and stars. Travel up through a few bands of bright light and darker light.

• Travel up through a rainbow jelly like substance which is easy to move through.

• See an iridescent sparkling window of white light up above. Go up through the window until you are immersed in this light as it rinses and renews you. Gather as much as you want.

• Travel back down, reaching the top of your head. Move this light through your body all the way into the earth and then back up through your body again until it reaches your crown. Open your eyes  Try this once a day for month and see the difference.

9 Ways to Create a Deep Spiritual Connection With Your Romantic Partner

When you both met, the tantalizing heat and magnetic connection between the two of you was intense and magical.

Life felt bright, invigorating, and paradisiacal. It was as if nothing, and no one else, existed in the world but you and your partner.

Fast forward five, ten, twenty or more years. Both of you feel tired and burdened by your responsibilities. Perhaps you have children, busy jobs, compacted timetables or other concerns to deal with.

You don’t know why … but something feels lacking. The spark in your relationship has dimmed. Maybe you’re even struggling to find a sense of connection with your partner and are wondering “what went wrong”?

Life has a way of bringing us back to reality sooner or later. As demands, stresses, obligations, and duties arise, it can be difficult to maintain a deep spiritual connection with our partners.

What is a Spiritual Connection?

A spiritual connection is basically a deep affinity felt between two people. This deep closeness goes beyond superficial personality traits, likes, dislikes or shared interests. Instead, a spiritual connection is about sharing the same fundamental values, beliefs, life goals, and dreams as the other. Two people who share a spiritual connection will meet each other on the same vibrational wavelength and will be able to share everything with each other.

Spiritually connected couples often share the following traits: • • • • • • • • • •

Honesty Empathetic listening Mutual respect Gratitude for each other Authentic interaction Open communication Meaningful conversations Intimate sex Autonomy Unconditional love

Spiritual connection is more than just about playing the role of “wife/husband,” “girlfriend/boyfriend,” “wife/wife” and so forth. Rather, spiritual connection in relationships is about meeting at an intimate and raw Soul level.

The Cyclical Nature of Love No relationship ever remains the same because the nature of life is constant, moment-tomoment change. One minute you will be passionately engaged with each other, and the next, you will both be distant. It’s important to remember that it’s totally normal to experience these fluctuations in your relationship. In fact, you might even notice that your connection with your partner is cyclical, meaning that it follows a circular pattern of change.

For example, one period of time you might share a lot of deep conversations, followed by quietly sharing each other’s presence, followed by a feeling of isolated distance. And this cycle may repeat itself many times. The same can be said for sex. You might go through a period of intense passion, followed by playful exploration, then followed by routinary intercourse.

It’s healthy to experience these fluctuations. In fact, not experiencing these cyclical changes would be very concerning indeed. Not experiencing these fluctuations would signify that one or both of you are clinging to the past and forcing the relationship to be a certain way. On the other hand, a lack of growth and change would signify relationship stagnation. Stagnation can happen for many reasons, but the most common causes are resentment, abuse or “outgrowing” the current relationship.

9 Ways to Create a Spiritual Connection With Your Partner Creating a spiritual connection with your partner isn’t about indoctrinating them into believing what you believe or liking what you like. Nor is creating a spiritual connection about changing the other person to be more “spiritual.” Both of these approaches are immature and damaging to your relationship.

Instead, creating a spiritual connection is about deepening the Soul contact between the two of you. Spiritual connection is about becoming vulnerable, engaged, attentive, open, and receptive to the other person.

Here are some recommendations:

1. Give more eye contact One of the saddest things I often see are couples that no longer give each other eye contact.

These couples communicate with each other, often stringing out whole conversations without so much as a glance at the other.

Eye contact is extremely intimate. When you give your partner eye contact, you are basically showing them that you are interested and deeply engaged in what they’re saying. Eye contact is not only a sign of respect, it is the best way to connect with another person’s Soul. Have you ever heard of “soul gazing”? Soul gazing is based on the premise that you can bathe in the waters of another person’s Soul through gazing into their eyes.

2. Set aside “us time” each day Sometimes life is just too damn busy to have the energy to maintain a relationship. One of the easiest things you can do is setting aside time each day out of your busy schedule to exclusively sit with your partner. Even sitting together in each other’s arms on the couch watching a movie is a good way to begin deepening your spiritual connection.

3. Explore what spiritual lessons your partner is teaching you Even if not done consciously, your partner’s behavior, words, and thoughts can teach you a lot.

Having a spiritual connection is about learning how to spiritually grow in your partnership.

What is your partner teaching you? Remember, our partners often see our “blind spots” and so can reveal a lot to us about ourselves, even unintentionally.

4. Touch more Physical touch is an immensely important element of creating a spiritual connection. The subtle energy exchanged through touch is very binding in that it helps to create a deeper affinity with your partner. Physical touch is soothing, comforting, and can often express much more than words can.

5. Have meaningful conversations What is in your heart? What means a lot to you that you want to share with someone? What epiphanies have you had? Start a conversation with your loved one. I like to have meaningful conversations with Luna during our morning walks. Share whatever is on your mind and find a regular place and time to do that.

6. Find ways to laugh together Laughter opens the heart and deepens your spiritual connection immediately. Learn how to laugh at yourself, your partner, and together with each other, in a light-hearted way. Even simply watching funny videos together can deepen your bond.

7. Openly communicate your feelings Most disconnected relationships lack open communication. Open communication is the ability to express your thoughts and feelings honestly while respecting the other person. Psychologist Marshall Rosenberg calls this “non-violent communication” (I recommend that you read his book for more guidance). When you feel hurt, angry, isolated, or any other emotion, express that to them. Not even your partner can read your mind, so don’t make that assumption. Openly communicating how you feel is the cornerstone of an honest relationship based on mutual caring, respect, and love.

8. Practice self-love It’s true: without truly loving and embracing yourself as you are, you will struggle to unconditionally love your partner. Instead, you will impose endless expectations, demands, and beliefs on them surrounding who they “should” be and how they “should” act. By practicing selflove, and accepting all the light and darkness within you, you will deepen your spiritual connection with your partner. True change comes from within, so if you want your relationship to become richer, you need to make your relationship with yourself richer.

9. Forgive past hurts Holding onto grudges and mental “tallies” of wrongdoings is a surefire way to sully any relationship. The more you hold onto grievances, the more isolated and distant you will feel from your partner. If you tend to hold grudges, try to make space for yourself to let go and open your heart to forgiveness. Most likely, you may need to openly communicate how you feel to your partner in a respectful and non-violent manner to seek closure.

Even Soulmate and Twin Flame Relationships Become Stale. We tend to idealize our relationships, even Soulmate, and twin flame connections. But the truth is that no matter what type of relationship or karmic agreement you have, you will eventually experience dullness. No relationship will stay vibrant consistently, no matter how magical. The trick is to distinguish between natural cyclical dullness and deeply unhealthy relationships. Sometimes, we get stranded in relationships that keep us spiritually stagnant or trapped in victim, martyr, persecutor, rescuer or love addict roles.

How to Relax By Practicing Mindful Breathing

As the old truism goes, “The best things in life are free,� and the best thing about mindful breathing is that it is completely and utterly free. You don’t need to buy a book or sign up to a program to practice mindful breathing (unless you really want to).

Breathing is so natural, so effortless, that we take it for granted. When we experience anxiety, stress or tension, the last thing we think about is our breathing.

The thing about breathing is that it is always rooted in the here and now, the present moment.

We are so lost in our busy, agitated, and delirious thoughts about the past or future, that we rarely inhabit this present moment. Mindful breathing anchors you back into the present moment so that your mind can rest, relax and become grounded again in reality.

By focusing on your breath, your mind will very quickly relax, followed by your body and any tension you’re physically experiencing. The wonderful thing about mindful breathing is that it can literally be practiced in any moment of the day, no matter what you’re doing, who you’re speaking with, or where you are.

There are no elaborate rituals or processes involved with mindful breathing, and that is what makes it so relaxing. You don’t have to worry about getting it right! There are no steps to even follow! Breathing comes so naturally and effortlessly to you that you do it unconsciously.

If you want to learn how to relax, you need to practice mindful breathing. It’s as simple as that.

You’re welcome to try other techniques to complement mindful breathing but experiment with making mindful breathing your focus and priority. There is no other technique I have discovered that is free, simple, easy, effortless, and constantly grounded in the present moment like mindful breathing.

“What about meditation?” you ask. Well here’s the thing, mindful breathing is meditation.

When you concentrate on your breathing, on the in-breath and out-breath, you are practicing meditation. You are emptying your mind. You are becoming aware. You are truly experiencing life. Mindful breathing and meditation are one and the same thing.

Although mindful breathing is a very simple practice, you will benefit from a few tips: •

Don’t force your breath. Forcing yourself to breathe deeply can often increase your anxiety.

Instead, try to simply concentrate on your breath, even if it’s shallow. Mindful breathing requires you to develop the powers of concentration and focus. As you concentrate gently on your breath, you will gradually find your breath deepening and slowing by itself.

Allow your breath to be fast, shallow or inconsistent. When you first come to concentrate on your breath, you may find that it is fast, shallow or inconsistent. Allow yourself to breathe in this way. Don’t try to force change because you will create tension. Allow yourself to breathe completely unhindered, but pay attention and be mindful of your breathing.

•

Understand your tendency to be judgmental. It’s important that you approach mindful breathing with a very gentle mindset. Instead of wanting to aggressively “master it” or be a “deep breathing Zen master,” give yourself the permission to breathe in whatever way comes naturally to you. The more you demand from yourself, the more stressed out you will be. Instead of being a relaxing practice, deep breathing will become another source of anxiety! Be wary of falling into this trap. Ensure that you are gentle and permissive with yourself.

Be patient. Mindful breathing is an art. It’s OK if you forget about it for a while. Whenever you notice that you have returned to your frantic thoughts, return back to your breath.

How does your in-breath and out-breath feel? Sometimes it helps to pay attention to how your in-breath and out-breath feels in your body. Notice your stomach and how it moves.

Notice your throat and how it feels. Notice the sensation in your nostrils as you breathe in air.

Gentle words. Sometimes (only sometimes) it helps to accompany the in-breath and outbreath with gentle words. You can say these words silently or mentally to yourself to anchor you to the present moment. For example, you might like to say, “Breathing in, I calm my body, breathing out, I relax” or a mantra such as “I breathe in, I breathe out.”

Dedicate time each day. While mindful breathing doesn’t need to become a formal practice, you may benefit from dedicating five or ten minutes every morning practicing it. The most important thing to remember is that mindful breathing is not just a practice you compartmentalize into one period of your day. Instead, mindful breathing needs to be adopted as a daily practice incorporated into your life wherever possible.

Understand the importance of mindful breathing. Mindful breathing becomes another fad or abandoned practice only when it isn’t understood properly. In order to keep up mindful breathing, you need to understand just how significant and vital it is to you and your life. I can’t make you continue mindfully breathing. Only you, with a sincere understanding of the direness of your situation, can.

What has helped me continue mindful breathing is realizing how destructive my frantic mind tends to be. When my mind is lost in fears and desires, I become agitated, impatient, depressed, fearful, bored, and addicted to things which I believe will make me “happy.” Mindful breathing helps me to slow down and reconnect with the beauty of the present moment. When I am anchored in the here and now, I am able to feel immense wellbeing, relaxation, and joy.

5 Signs You’re Emotionally Intoxicated Emotional intoxication occurs when personal conflicts and emotions directly affect our physical and psychological well being. Emotional intoxication manifests in symptoms like irritability, depression, emotional instability, and fatigue.

While there are many triggers, the underlying cause of emotional intoxication is the failure to set aside time to cultivate our inner life.

How do I know if I’m intoxicated?

You may be under the influence of emotional intoxication and not even realize it. To uncover whether you’re emotionally intoxicated, you must pay close attention to any patterned behavior — things that you do, despite the fact that they’re bad for you.

If you’re displaying one or more of these behaviors you may be emotionally intoxicated: 1- You are defensive A person who is emotionally intoxicated is in self-protection mode and constantly misinterprets the actions or words of others as attacks.

When you’re intoxicated, your insecurities direct your life. You become more reactive and you put yourself frequently on the defensive. Your self-esteem is completely reduced and everything makes you feel vulnerable.

You block out the positive and selectively attend to the negative. This often causes you to twist the words or actions of others, reacting in an aggressive manner to protect yourself from the possible harm that your emotions are on guard against.

2- You are excessively critical When people are emotionally intoxicated they self-impose a barrier of intransigence. They are overly harsh with others and themselves.

If you are intoxicated, it’s likely that, due to your affinity to have everything under control, you are too demanding with yourself and you do not concede even a tiny margin. Try to be more benevolent with yourself and with others.

3- You feel shut down emotionally When we are emotionally intoxicated we opt to shut the curtains on our emotions and protect ourselves from our own feelings.

This is why, when a person is overwhelmed by their feelings, in some way their vitality faints and shuts off. When you’re shut down emotionally, you do not feel capable of reactivating your life in any way.

When our brain is inundated by our emotions, we can’t think or act clearly and effectively.

4- You are aggressive toward others Intoxicated people can become aggressive and dangerous. Due to the emotional block, they do not respond clearly nor are they capable of sensibly assessing those around them. Furthermore, it becomes difficult for them to feel empathy for others.

This outward aggressive is really a byproduct of the condemnation and guilt that emotionally intoxicated people feel toward themselves. They project their fears and frustrations on others as a way of escape and freedom.

5- You self-sabotage Traveling through life can be difficult for a person intoxicated by their emotions. They fear success because of their inability to tolerate uncertainty. Emotionally intoxicated people do not believe in their own ability to take on what may come.

They need to have everything tied up, tied up again, and tested a thousand times. If you are intoxicated, remember that there is only one person in this world could stop you from going far and that person is you.

What can I do if I’m emotionally intoxicated?

We need time to detox. Just like if you have had too much alcohol to drink, there will be a hangover. Emotional hangovers cause guilt, continual anger, difficulty sleeping, and sadness.

But do not worry, by identifying your behaviors and emotions you have already begun the healing process. Knowing this you can leave behind your tendency to “over consume” negative emotions and you will begin the process of emotional cleaning that is much needed. The symptoms will disappear and your feelings will return to being aligned with reality.

We all have those things that are a constant source of negative energy in our lives – sometimes it’s people, sometimes it’s situations, and sometimes it’s things. Negative energy is something we can do without – it keeps us from our happiness and steals our peace of mind.

I’d like to share a 3-step process I’ve put in place to remove a lot of the negative energy from my life. And it’s a great skill to teach kids too!

Step 1: Pay close attention to your feelings at all times. Every time you notice “the grungies”, take a minute to identify the source of that negative energy – is it a specific situation, is something broken, is it being around a specific person?

Step 2: Write down the source of that negative energy. Some of the items on my most recent list included replacing burned out light bulbs in the kitchen, sorting through a box of items that don’t have a “home,” organizing my recipes, updating our wills, etc.

Now replacing light bulbs may sound like a small thing, but every time I walked into my kitchen I felt a ping of negative energy about it Put everything on your list – no matter how big or how small. Negative energy is negative energy, and the purpose of this process is to get rid of it.

Step 3: Put together a plan. Outline when and how you will take action. Even if you can’t get to it today, just knowing that it is on your list and scheduling time to handle it, can help remove the negative energy associated with the situation.

symptoms severe enough to prevent some sufferers from leaving the house, and 1 in 5 South Africans experiencing it, IBS – Irritable Bowel Syndrome – is no joke. Yet, this blanket term for different symptoms and causes is elusive in its definition.

Here are some details about this chronic illness that may help you address any specific issues you are experiencing.

Definition IBS is a bowel disorder with no known disease or structural abnormality behind its symptoms. That makes it a ‘functional’ or ‘psychosomatic’ disease by definition. IBS causes recurring episodes of diarrhoea or constipation (or both), as well as cramps, bloating and gas. Symptoms can be very severe, interrupting work and other activities, and 70% of sufferers are women, although the reasons for this are unspecified.

Symptoms According to Harvard Health Publications, an IBS diagnosis requires the presence of abdominal pain or discomfort for 12 or more weeks (not necessarily consecutive) in the past 12 months, accompanied by at least two of the following: • relief from abdominal discomfort by bowel elimination • a change in the frequency of bowel movements • a change in the appearance or form of stools Straining, urgency or the feeling of incomplete evacuation are also signs of IBS, as is passing mucus, bloating, gas or the feeling of abdominal distention. Mayo Clinic says that the signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can vary widely from person to person and often resemble those of other diseases.

Triggers IBS is a chronic condition for most people, although symptoms can vary, lessen, increase and even disappear entirely at times. Triggers vary from person to person, with common triggers including: Certain foods: Food allergies like gluten- or dairyintolerances appear to play a role in some individuals’ suffering. Other aggravating foods

may include cruciferous veggies, fruit, carbonated drinks and alcohol – amongst many.

Bacteria overgrowth: According to American MD, Dr Mark Hyman , too many bacteria in the intestines is on the rise as a leading trigger – and possibly even cause – of IBS. He believes that the lining of the small intestine can break down from factors like stress, excess antibiotics, antiinflammatory drugs and a diet high in sugar and alcohol, exposing your immune system to undesirable particles and activating an immune response that can lead to IBS, along with other system problems.

Stress: This is believed to be an almost universal aggravator, although not a cause of symptoms.

Hormones: Researchers believe that hormones play a role in this condition, especially since women are twice as likely to suffer from it.

Treatment If you are sure you are suffering with IBS, here are a few tried and tested strategies that have been found to be helpful: •

Get tested for food allergies. If this is a little pricy, eliminate regular allergy foods from your diet and reintroduce them over time to watch for aggravators. These include dairy, gluten, yeast, peanuts, eggs, corn and soy. This includes just generally looking at your diet and lifestyle to see if there are any obvious aggravators, like sugar and alcohol.

Take a probiotic. This will repopulate your bowel with good bacteria to tackle any overgrowth. Ask your GP to recommend a high quality supplement, as quality – and therefore effectiveness – can vary dramatically.

Include digestive enzymes. While these shouldn’t be taken in excess or daily on a regular basis, digestive enzymes can be very helpful while trying to heal your gut.

Go natural. A number of vitamins, minerals and food sources have proven helpful for gut health, including fibre, fish oil, zinc, magnesium, vitamin A and glutamine. However, it is very important to have these recommendations personalised by a healthcare practitioner for safe use.

Consider an antibiotic. After a thorough exam with your GP, Dr Hyman suggests considering an antibiotic like rifaximin (Xifaxin) to combat the immediate symptoms. This may need to be supplemented with an anti-fungal – also prescribed by your doctor.

Try alternative therapies. Hypnosis, counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy for stress or depression, acupuncture and regular exercise are all possibilities for improving your bowel health.

Sadly, the use of aloe both topically and internally, and its healing capabilities, is still met with much scepticism by the medical profession. This is, in part, due to three facts: 1. Aloe is known for too broad a range of efficacies, from successfully treating insect stings to alleviating IBS, AIDS and many other life-threatening diseases – a “onestop cure-all”; 2. A large proportion of the information is gained from anecdotal evidence, by word of mouth from happy patients, and is therefore generally dismissed by the professional medical world, as hearsay.

3. Scientists have carried out much research for many years, to determine what the active ingredient is in aloe, to which all the successes can be attributed, until recently with no conclusion.

This research, both in South Africa and abroad, would now appear to have concluded that the key components in Aloe which carry the healing and curative properties, are the Aloe Polysaccharides.

Aloe Ferox is made up of a long list of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, anthraquinones, lignin, etc but the plant’s abundance of Polysaccharides (long-chain sugars), working together in a synergistic manner with all the other elements, are deemed to be the key active ingredient.

Although the proponents of Aloe Ferox tend to focus on the differences between Aloe Ferox and Aloe Vera, there are sufficient fundamental, biological similarities between the two species to give credence to theories that what the one species is capable of, can be expected in the other.

HOW ALOE WORKS IN THE BODY As we know, the body is comprised of many chemicals, the most important of which are the proteins. These are made up of 22 different amino acids that are strung together in a number of ways to promote health, to give the body energy and to function normally and to protect against disease.

Certain proteins act as catalysts. These catalysts possess the ability to speed up necessary chemical processes inside the body without themselves being altered. These proteins are the enzymes. All enzymes are proteins that work to regulate the body’s delicate chemistry (delicate because these enzymes are easily neutralized or destroyed, and when even a small number come under siege, the result can be illness and even death).

The most significant enzymes are those that catalyse hydrolysis, (water absorption) in the system. For that reason, they are called hydrolysing enzymes.

Each group of hydrolysing enzymes takes on certain reductionist tasks and introduces them to the system in ways that enable it to rebuild them in the form of healthy amino acid proteins.

For that reason, each hydrolysing enzyme belongs in its own grouping according to one of three functions: 1. The ones that breakdown carbohydrates (starches and sugar) are called amylases; 2. Those that reduce fats are called lipases; 3. The enzymes that act as protein splitting agents are called proteases.

The fact that all three of these groupings are found in aloe explains why it has been found to be such an effective digestive aid.

There are several other enzyme groupings according to different levels of function.

However, enzymes that are properly functioning can help the body reduce fat and starch into proteins for strength and health, or split proteins and fats for recombination into starches or the utilization of energy. When all the body functions are working in harmony and the enzymes and amino acids are performing their jobs in the splitting and rebuilding of proteins, the system stays healthy.

Milk is a prime source of 3 important nutrients calcium, potassium and Vitamin D. • Calcium is especially important for bone health • Too much sodium and too little potassium together are risk factors for high blood pressure. Most people have too much salt and not enough potassium in their diet • Vitamin D is added to fortified milk

Research further suggests that the dairy in our diet can actually cause health problems (for some) like lactose intolerance, painful menstruation, aggravation of skin problems, indigestion, heart burn, etc.

A deficiency of lactase, an enzyme produced in your small intestine, is usually responsible for lactose intolerance.

Although many people with low levels of lactase are able to digest milk products, if you are indeed lactose intolerant, you are unable to fully digest the sugar (lactose) in milk and your lactase deficiency could lead to symptoms after you consume dairy.

Some of these symptoms include diarrhoea, gas and bloating after eating or drinking dairy products. The condition, which is also called lactose malabsorption, is usually harmless, but can be very uncomfortable.

One of the few times you don’t want your child to share, is when they have a cold. The cold is the most common infectious disease in people; there are hundreds of viruses that cause them and we cannot hope to build up immunity to them all.

When someone in your household goes down with a cold, the only thing you can do is minimise your chances of catching it too.

Keep your hands clean It’s important to keep your hands as clean as possible; not only yours, but your child’s too.

Encourage your child to practice proper hand hygiene by making it fun – hand-washing games with fun-shaped soaps, or the use of reward charts, can help you achieve this.

Use tissues The most hygienic way to contain germs when we cough and sneeze is to use tissues, and they should be thrown away immediately after use.

If there are no tissues available, then the crook of your elbow is the next best option. Don’t use your hands, otherwise they will be covered with germs and you may not be able to wash them straight away.

Don’t share food Don’t be tempted to share food, drink of eating utensils with your child – the virus that causes colds can be transferred by saliva.

Drink lots of fluids Drinking lots of fluids will help keep you hydrated – it won’t flush the cold and flu germs out of your system, but will help you to feel better. Warm drinks such as herbal tea, clear broth, and hot water with honey and lemon are all soothing and will help ease congestion.

Avoid coffee and alcohol though, as these drinks will dehydrate you. If you really can’t persuade your child to drink herbal teas etc, then warm juice makes a good alternative.

Eat nutrient-rich foods If your child has a cold or you feel like you might be coming down with one, tweak your diet. You should be eating mostly nutrition-rich foods, especially fruits and veggies, which are packed with vitamins to keep your immune system functioning at its best. Juices can be nourishing, too – just lay off concentrated and sugary varieties.

Keep your distance If you can, try to ensure that your child stays in their room as much as possible to keep the germs contained within a small area. If this isn’t possible, make sure everyone keeps their distance instead and difficult as it may be, NO hugs or goodnight kisses until they’re better.

Get enough good sleep Studies have shown that lack of sleep has a big impact on our immune system – an average of less than seven hours sleep a night will triple your chances of catching a cold. Equally, it’s been proven that good quality, deep sleep has restorative benefits.

Eat chicken soup Chicken soup is not only good for the soul, it’s good for combating the effects of colds too.

Its warm liquid can help soothe sore throats and unblock stuffy noses – make sure you have some tissues handy! Chicken soup containing vegetables is packed with vitamins and antioxidants which can help charge up the immune system and help fight infection.

PLEASE NOTE: The following guidance doesn't apply to children under the age of two, because they have different nutritional needs. From the ages of two to five, children should gradually move to eating the same foods as the rest of the family, in the proportions shown on the Eatwell guide.

Fruit and vegetables Eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day. This section should make up just over a third of the food you eat each day.

Fresh, frozen, dried and tinned (in juice or water) all count, as well as unsweetened fruit juices and smoothies (maximum 150ml, once a day). Try to have a variety.

For fresh, frozen or canned fruit and vegetables, a portion is 80g, but a portion of dried fruit is around 30g and only counts once a day. Limit fruit juice and smoothies to 150ml a day because of the sugars in them.

Try to avoid adding rich sauces or butter to your vegetables and sugar or syrups to fruit. Also, make sure tinned fruit and vegetables don’t have added salt and/or sugar.

Potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and other starchy carbohydrates Starchy foods should make up just over a third of the food we eat. Choose wholegrain or higher fibre versions of products like breads, rice or pasta and leave skins on potatoes.

Other starchy carbohydrates’ means foods such as breakfast cereals, porridge, yams and plantains.

Choose wholegrain versions where possible for more fibre, vitamins and minerals. Higher fibre versions of white bread and pasta can help you to increase your fibre intake, if you use these as a substitute for standard white versions of these foods.

Dairy and alternatives Milk, cheese, yogurt, fromage frais, quark and non-dairy alternatives are included in this group. Choose lower-fat and lower-sugar options where possible. Try swapping whole or semi skimmed milk for 1 per cent fat milk. Low or reduced fat versions of dairy products are widely available, including cheese. Alternatively, buy standard products in smaller amounts and eat them less often.

If you are using dairy alternatives (such as soya, oat or rice milks), it’s important to choose unsweetened and calcium- fortified versions.

Beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other proteins These foods are sources of protein, vitamins and minerals, so it’s important to include foods from this group.

Beans and pulses are good alternatives to meat as they are low in fat and high in protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Aim to have 2 portions of sustainably sourced fish per week, one of which is oily.

Eat less red and processed meat such as sausages, bacon and cured meats and if you eat more than 90g try to cut down to no more than 70g per day.

Remove skin and visible fat from meat and poultry.

Oils and spreads Some fats in our diet are essential, but we need to think about the type of fat we add to our food, because generally we are eating too much saturated fat.

Unsaturated oils such as rapeseed, olive or sunflower oils are healthier choices than saturated fats like butter and lard.

Swapping butter for lower fat unsaturated fat spreads is a way to reduce your saturated fat intake.

Because of the saturated fat content, butter is not included in this section but in the ‘foods to eat less often and in small amounts’ section as it’s not needed for a healthy diet.

All types of fat are high in energy, and so cutting down on these foods could help to control your weight.

Foods to eat less often and in small amounts This includes food and drinks high in fat and sugar such as cakes, biscuits, chocolate, sweets, puddings, pastries, ice cream, jam, honey, crisps, sauces, butter, cream and mayonnaise.

These foods are not needed in the diet so, should be consumed occasionally and in small amounts.

Hydration Water, lower fat milk and sugar free drinks including tea and coffee all count.

Aim to have the equivalent of 6-8 glasses of fluid a day. Limit fruit juice and/or smoothies to a total of 150ml a day.

Food labeling Colour coded labels on the front of packs can help you to choose between foods and pick those that are lower in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt.

Your kidneys are responsible for filtering toxins and wastes from your blood, and maintaining "homeostasis", a state of proper balance in the body by regulating blood pressure, various minerals, water and even hormones in the bloodstream. Kidneys adjust the body's acid/alkaline balance and regulate the amount of fluids in your body.

Kidneys process 200 quarts of blood daily to filter out 2 quarts of excess water and wastes. The kidneys monitor the correct balance of sodium, potassium and phosphorous in the blood, along many other body chemicals. Excess minerals, hormones, water and other substances are passed to the bladder and out of the body. If your kidneys aren't able to remove waste products and excess minerals, these build up in the blood and cause damage.

Kidneys also produce several essential hormones. One stimulates the production of red blood cells, another regulates blood pressure and calcium metabolism, and yet another produces a form of vitamin D which strengthens bones and increases immunity.

When your kidneys are overloaded with too many chemicals, medications, processed foods, preservatives, highly chemicalized beauty, personal care, and cleaning products, and a polluted environment, they may become unable to handle it all. Because of our modern "chemical society" almost everybody's kidneys are already functioning at less than optimum levels.

About 100,000 new people are diagnosed with kidney disease yearly! Everyone needs to know more about what is good for the kidneys and what isn't, in order to make better choices.

Preheat oven to 200° Celsius.

Add cubed butternut and 4 unpeeled garlic cloves to a baking sheet, drizzle with coconut oil and season with salt and pepper.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until all butternut is fork tender and the garlic is golden brown. Allow to cool.

Peel roasted garlic and add to food processor or blender, along with butternut, fresh garlic, lemon juice, chickpeas, olive oil, salt, pepper, parsley, cinnamon, cumin and smoked paprika (optional).

Purée until creamy and smooth, scraping down sides as needed and adding more olive oil or a touch of water if it's too thick.

Taste and adjust seasonings, then refrigerate.

Heat oil in a large pot over medium high heat.

Add garlic and onion and cook until translucent, about 6 minutes.

Add sweet potato, cabbage, baby marrow, parsley, basil, dried herbs, celery, carrots, bay leaf, and lightly sauté Once coated, add broth/stock tomato paste and tinned tomatoes.

Cook for 30 to 40 minutes, until vegetables are tender and sweet potato is cooked through.

The lack in us is an illusion. Before we were born, (while we were in the womb), we had access to Higher wisdom. Then when we were born all that wisdom was removed from our consciousness and we become like sponges; absorbing everything around us.

We learned how to think, speak, act, be and do from our parents, those around us and whatever environments we were exposed to. Some of our experiences from childhood left us feeling disappointed, rejected, angry, hurt and sad. We stored these in our sub-conscious and created limiting beliefs and feelings. In addition, we also carry residual memories in our cells for generations and lifetimes.

These experiences, feelings and stored cellular memories contribute to us feeling unsafe in some way or another. This often leads us to responding negatively or defensively to challenging situations, triggers and setbacks. And we find ourselves constantly fighting to fulfill this need of feeling safe.

Eireen is the Greek Goddess of peace who the Romans called Pax (peace). Today you are being told that although you might not be able to see it at this moment in time everything is on track and all the pieces of the puzzle are falling into place exactly as they are meant to.

Skip the gym and practise this versatile workout wherever suits you most. Train in front of the TV or take to the park, beach or any sunny spot for body weight strength moves that don’t require any equipment.

How to do it: Practise each move for 1 minute, followed by a 30-second rest. Feeling strong? Take a 2-minute break, then repeat!

OPPOSITE ARM AND LEG EXTENSION Start on all fours with hips above ankles and shoulders above wrists. Bend one elbow then extend it out and up to open your chest, as you extend the opposite leg backwards and up. Pause for a moment then draw the elbow and knee towards each other, rounding your back as you do.

Swap arms and legs halfway through your minute.

SPLIT-LEG DEADLIFT WITH ARM EXTENSION: Stand with feet together and arms held in front of you. Keeping your balance, raise one leg out behind and your arms in front of you to form a straight line. Saving Energy On Refrigeration

You don’t need a Windmill to reduce your power costs…just some smart thinking.

Ok, to start – let’s cover the basics of refrigeration. The fridge thermostat is set to the required temperature for the contents of the fridge. For example, we’ll use 5°Celcius as the set point. The fridge is switched on and starts to cool the AIR inside the fridge cabinet down. Once the AIR temperature reaches 5° , then the thermostat sensor relays the temperature data to the control system, which then shuts off the compressor.

In energy saving, there is a difference. Food or most products kept in a fridge will retain their temperature for longer periods than air – this is because of the difference in density between air and water. Since most products contain high levels of water – they keep their internal temperature much longer. SO- in the usual environment – YOU ARE WASTING VAST AMOUNTS OF ENERGY KEEPING THE AIR TEMPERATURE AT THE SET POINT!

In normal usage, as the fridge is opened and closed, the AIR inside the fridge will warm up, as when the door is opened the natural process is that cooler air from inside the fridge flows out and the warmer air outside the fridge flows in. This causes the air temperature inside the fridge to increase – the thermostat sensor then picks this up and causes the compressor to come on and cool the AIR temperature down again to the set point of 5°.

Rather focus on keeping the product temperature constant – this is saving energy.

The amount of energy used to re-gain the set point of 5° will depend on how high the Air temperature gets inside the cabinet. So, it will take more energy to cool the air from 12 to 5°, than from 8 to 5°. NOTICE – this is all about AIR temperature – Not product temperature.

So why does the fridge need to switch on ? To cool the air ? NO.NO.NO. IT DOESN’T have to switch on at all because the Cucumber (product in the fridge) HAS NOT WARMED UP!

Saving Energy on Refrigeration E CUBE Test Data:

by Juan du Toit We decided to start a WATER WISE CAMPAIGN with advice and tips on how to save water, seeing as water has become a scarce resource in SA and we need to use it sparingly.

We made a list of 12 WATER SAVING TIPS to take care of your lawn during this dry spell  Remove no more than 1/3 the height of the grass for any one mowing. Keeping the grass slightly higher will increase shade on the soil, encourage deeper rooting and reduce evaporation. The added height shades the ground, slowing evaporation. Mowing shorter not only provides less protection for the ground, but it also allows quicker uptakes of water into the atmosphere.  Mow in the morning or early evening and not midday - to avoid burning grass.  Try mulching, even if you do not have a mulching mower. Let clippings remain on the lawn. Lawns tend to lose more water and nutrients through evaporation when clippings are removed.  Water thoroughly but infrequently to encourage deeper rooting, increase soil moisture reservoir and to reduce the number of weeds. Letting the grass be "thirsty" encourages deeper rooting.  Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation; it can reduce water usage up to 40%.  Fertilise only twice a year; mid-October and late February. Always use a slow release organic fertiliser. Lush lawns look great, but heavily fertilised lawns use more water and are more susceptible to drought stress.  Water only every 5 - 7 days (if no rain). A soaking rain can extend that period up to 10 -14 days.

Most people apply double the amount of water needed.  Do not water lawn on windy days; it increases transpiration and evaporation rates.  If you did not aerate your lawn in spring, consider doing so in the fall. Aeration creates small holes in the ground that allow water to soak deeper into the ground and help promote root growth.  If possible, use soak irrigation lines instead of pop-up heads. These can reduce water consumption up to 60%. If using pop-up heads, align heads to avoid paved surfaces or other non-targeted objects. Regularly check for leaks and install a rain gauge to prevent activation of the system during and just after a rainfall.  Increase organic matter; while this comes naturally to most organic gardeners, many don't realise the benefits of building humus in the soil. Organic matter absorbs many times its weight in water, which is then available for plant growth. It provides many advantages: clay soils with added organic matter will accept water more quickly, and organically amended sandy soils hold water longer and don't need to be watered as frequently. One of the easiest ways to build organic matter is to add Grass Factory & Eco Organic Compost that breaks down to humus. This has an incredible potential to hold moisture, nutrients and build soil health.  Keep the lawn mower blade sharp to make cleaner cuts that cause less water loss than cuts from dull mower blades.

Occurs most frequently in large breeds, especially German Shepherds, Labrador and Golden retrievers.

• Cutaneous Mast Cell Tumors Most commonly reported skin tumor in dogs Typical cancer in Horses • Melanoma Mainly occur in horse with a grey colouring.

• Sarcoids A sarcoid is a tumor "like a sarcoma.”

However where sarcomas are generally malignant, Sarcoids tends to be benign.

CHILDHOOD CANCER Awareness & Early Detection CHOC’s Awareness Programme It is estimated that currently less than half of children with cancer in South Africa are diagnosed, and many of those who are diagnosed are in advanced stage of illness. One of the reasons for this is a lack of awareness and knowledge in parts of the health system regarding the early warning signs of childhood cancer.

As a result, CHOC initiated an Awareness Programme to disseminate the early warning signs that the South African Childhood Cancer Study Group drew up.

The objectives of the programme include ensuring that all children with cancer in South Africa are diagnosed as early possible and that the early warning signs of childhood cancer are well known in all parts of the health system (including primary health care clinics and all hospitals).

Cancer Facts Cancer incidence Although childhood cancer is relatively rare, the incidence rate has been increasing. According to a 2014 report by the American Cancer Society, it is now estimated that one in 408 children worldwide will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 15. Yet with early detection and treatment in paediatric oncology units, globally the survival rate can be as high as between 70% and 80%, with variance depending on the type of cancer.

Common childhood cancers Cancers in children tend to be different from those found in adults, most often occurring in the developing cells like bone marrow, blood, kidneys and nervous system tissues. Life-threatening blood disorders include aplastic anaemia, thalassaemia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Despite being relatively rare, in Western countries childhood cancer is the second most common cause of death in children aged 5 to 14 years, after accidents, whilst in Africa it does not make it into the top 10 common causes.

According to the most recent South African Children’s Cancer Study Group (SACCSG) registry statistics, for 2009 to 2013, the five most common childhood cancers in South Africa are leukaemia, followed by lymphoma (tumours that begin in the lymph glands), then brain tumours, nephroblastomas, or Wilms tumours – cancer of the kidneys - and then soft tissue sarcomas, which are tumours that begin in the connective tissue.

The Saint Siluan Early Warning signs These early warning signs were drawn up by the South African Childhood Cancer Study Group and they have been adopted by the International Society of Paediatric Oncology. St Siluan was a monk who prayed for humanity ceaselessly.

Keeping more than hope alive for nearly four decades

CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation was established in 1979 as a support group to parents of children with cancer, by parents of children with cancer. Having experienced the immense emotional and financial toll that cancer takes they recognised there is more than one victim in the family of the child with cancer.

Their aim was to ease the burden on parents facing the same journey by providing access to relevant, accurate information, as well as emotional and practical support.

From the onset CHOC provided support in the hospital wards, hence the name Children’s Haematology Oncology Clinics, or CHOC. Gradually parent groups were set up in other key centres, where the major state-funded academic hospitals are located and paediatric oncologists practice.

In 2000, these regional entities merged into a national organisation. CHOC now has a head office in Johannesburg, six regional offices, two branches, and 13 accommodation facilities close to treatment centres. With occupancy steadily increasing our budget for maintenance and running costs of the accommodation facilities in 2015 will amount to R7.132 million, with each facility costing over half a million and we have a total capacity of 66 030 bed nights per annum.

We do not receive funding from government but rely heavily on donations from caring corporates, individuals and parents of children with cancer. Funds raised are used to provide all-encompassing support – from direct practical help to the children and their families and those involved in the treatment – to necessary equipment.

HUSKY ROMI WOLF SANCTUARY HuskyRomi is a non-profit organization providing a safe haven for abandoned and abused huskies and wolves in South Africa.

We provide a home to all huskies and wolves that can’t be kept as pets because of their complicated nature. Many of the animals arrive in a poor condition, some not even knowing what grass is. They are rehabilitated with loving care by Larry Paul. This website was started to provide support to the HuskyRomi project and to promote the protection of wolves and other wildlife. The sanctuary is open for the public to come and learn about wolves. We do appreciate donations and sponsorship for the buying of food, for veterinary bills and doing maintenance to the enclosures.

We currently take care of more than 200 huskies, wolves and hybrids in 54 enclosures.

Get Involved We are working towards getting a formal volunteer program off the ground at HuskyRomi. This is available to both local (South African) and international volunteers. Should you wish to name a wolf, for instance in remembrance of a loved one or pet, you may arrange it with Larry. We just request that you then will be prepared to do a full monthly sponsorship of that wolf for a period of at least two years.

Our dream is to build the LINBER KENNELS facility into a top-notch rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming haven for rescue dogs. We also want to establish a home-base for our EDUCATION campaigns, so that we can work with the youth in returning to the core value of COMPASSION and RESPECT for Self and All Life.
