T

he Symphony Volunteer Council is proud to welcome you to the Johnston-Clark Estate, our 41st ShowHouse to benefit the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.

We thank Dr. and Mrs. Johnston and Laura Clark for their interest in the Symphony and their willingness to have us make their wonderful home into the ShowHouse that you see today. Our decorators have spent countless hours in the design and installation of their creations in each of the rooms of the estate. We appreciate their cooperation, time, expertise and inspiration, and their investment in the success of this ShowHouse.

A major factor in the success of this year’s ShowHouse is the contribution of our business partners and advertisers, and their support in the development process. The SVC committees, members and volunteers are the final pieces of our team and the ones who brought all the elements of success together. We cannot thank them enough for their dedication to the success of this project.

A NOTE FROM THE ALABAMA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

I

am honored to welcome you to the annual Decorators’ ShowHouse, a wonderful tradition for the Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO). We are glad you are here today and hope that you enjoy the Johnston-Clark Estate.

This single-family house was built in the early ’90s and contains more than 10,000 square feet of living space.

This year, we are pleased to be returning to Mountain Brook, a community that has hosted many previous successful ShowHouses and has a long history of support for the ASO. As is the case with so much of the ASO’s success, the ShowHouse would not be possible without the hard work and tireless efforts of our Symphony Volunteer Council. Thanks to their dedication, we are celebrating more than 40 years of Decorators’ ShowHouses. I want to thank all of its members on behalf of the ASO Boards, musicians and staff for making the ShowHouse an annual community favorite. It is always an overwhelming success, and this year will be no exception.

The Symphony Volunteer Council plays a vital role, and its contributions to the Symphony endowment and annual fund have surpassed $2 million. To have such a generous volunteer group is a luxury that we are grateful for each day. The time, talent, energy and financial support provided to the ASO by these dedicated members is tremendous.

We do all of this, of course, in support of your amazing Alabama Symphony Orchestra. The national spotlight is shining brightly on our community thanks to their masterful performances. We are

consistently reminded that Birmingham is a destination point on the arts and cultural scene.

The Orchestra’s time is not just limited to the stage — thanks to the Council’s support and the Orchestra’s leadership we are able to impact the lives of more than 25,000 schoolchildren annually and more than 100,000 patrons. The energy we feel each day is a testament to the product that we have created thanks to the Council — and to your involvement as a guest at this year’s ShowHouse.

The Alabama Symphonic Association was organized in the fall of 1993 following the unfortunate bankruptcy of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra earlier that same year. Members of the existing volunteer organizations (the Women’s Committee, the Junior Women’s Committee and the Men’s Committee) became the interim oversight committee of the new organization. The absence of an orchestra never diminished the enthusiasm of the volunteer organizations as the ASO rebirth efforts began.

As paid staff was slowly added to the organization, the Symphony Volunteer Council was created with members from the three existing volunteer organizations and began to operate in a more traditional volunteer role. The new Council sponsored successful Decorators’ ShowHouses and pledged to raise $2 million in 10 years toward the planned $10 million Endowment Fund. The $2 million goal was reached with proceeds from the 2010 Decorators’ ShowHouse.

Prior to this new pledge, the volunteer organizations continuously sponsored Decorators’ ShowHouses since 1976 and raised nearly $5 million in support of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. In addition, the current Symphony Volunteer Council sponsors the Lois Pickard Music Scholarship competition for young musical artists and has awarded more than $110,300 in the past 19 years.

Music education is a vital part of the mission for the Alabama Symphony. The Symphony Volunteer Council supports this mission by assisting with arrangements for ASO concerts in schools throughout Alabama and by serving as ushers at Young People’s Concerts and occasionally as docents in schools that will be attending the concerts.

HISTORY

W

hen Laura Clark and her two daughters, Madison and Abigail, moved to Mountain Brook in December 2005, they never dreamed their home would play host to two Decorators’ ShowHouses.

The first was the Villa Wofford Clark home on Salisbury Road, purchased from Dr. and Mrs. Jim Andrews. This year’s ShowHouse, a plantation home located on East Briarcliff Road, was purchased by Mrs. Clark in 2006 to entice her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Furnie Johnston, to move to Birmingham, away from their newly built dream home in Dothan but closer to their children and grandchildren.

Dr. Johnston was the first orthopedic surgeon in Dothan and was instrumental in the growth of the medical community in that area. Jo Johnston is an accomplished musician who wrote the national branch songs for three military branches.

Their great love for the water led them to move to a smaller home in a gated retirement community on beautiful Lake Heather.

The previous owners of this year’s ShowHouse were Dr. and Mrs. Paul Clark, who built the home in 1996.

‘Southern Sophistication’

E

specially welcoming in the entry area, Low Country woven vinyl rockers by Lloyd Flanders add a touch of antebellum good taste. These rockers fashion vision and luxury on this outdoor porch and invite enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures.

Pennoyer Newman, a New York-based company, created the perfect accents with their distinctive garden pots cast from estate originals of J.P. Morgan.

Life is brought into the space in the form of Elaine Smith’s outdoor throw pillows.

Twenty years as owner of Blackjack Gardens have given her a unique experience in the retail trade. Teaching art and working on many volunteer projects was the foundation for 15 years as a buyer for the Gatehouse gift shop at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Mary Younes joined Blackjack Gardens 13 years ago and has enjoyed learning about the furniture business with wonderful people helping along the way.

Tammy Powell has been in design for several years, developing her talent for fabric, color and placement of furnishings. Powell’s objective with her clients is to create outdoor and indoor spaces for them to enjoy year-round.

After joining Blackjack Gardens and earning a landscape horticulturist degree, Sandi Kirk has managed their inventory and helped clients for 19 years to develop beautiful and functional outdoor living spaces.

The newest addition to the Blackjack team is Christy Harris, who was excited to be involved with making this space a unique area.

‘The Gentleman’s Retreat’

his room is reminiscent of a Deep South library, with deep mystic navy from Pratt & Lambert. It features a charming pair of luscious, taupe leather chairs just the right size, with a beautiful panel of eye-catching drapery panels in conjunction with an impressive and stately rug.

These are joined by funny and quirky knickknacks on the shelves of the impressive bookcase.

‘Gold Digger’

he inspiration for this powder bath came from a recent trip to Harriet from Fixtures Paris. The opulence that exists in that city is so overwhelming and Finishes; Chris at and inspiring. While there has been a huge resurgence in the Nelson Glass use of gold and black in recent years, it’s now become a very recognizable pairing of neutral with metallic. This palette is moody, sexy, sophisticated and, of course, elegant. The dripping of the gold metallic paint offers an unconventional form of movement while warming up the dark palette of charcoal and caviar.

We “dig” this concept for the element of surprise that it brings to a traditional powder room.

A well-appointed home becomes a reflection of who lives and breathes inside those four walls. We strive to adapt to our clients’ diverse needs and create a space that is comfortable, captivating and also functional.

We are not interested in duplicating or repeating our design plans from one client to another, but rather implementing a plan that tells a story of who inhabits the space we have been entrusted to define.

‘Baby Blues’

W

hen you enter the home, you can see through the living room to the great outdoors, and the design and architecture of the room take advantage of that beautiful view.

Baby blue with vibrant shades of sapphire and Adriatic blues accented with browns and silver are the colors chosen to bring the outside in.

Multiple textures also make the room both interesting and

inviting to any guest.

Weathered brown leather, dyed Tibetan lambswool, cowhide and hand-designed fabric all work together to complete the feel. Keep an eye out for the wonderful artwork around the room, everything from an original Vasarely and Agam to Waterford glass.

The furnishings are floating in the center of the room to take advantage of volume of the room.

‘Sitting Pretty’

T

his classic design with timeless lines invites one for an elegant brunch. The custom, hand-finished Karges table is set with fine china, silver and sparkling stemware.

A beautiful flower arrangement celebrates the return of spring, and the blue ceiling brings a feeling of freshness to the room. A pair of slipcovered linen chairs awaits the host and hostess, while the side chairs are covered in an off-white linen fabric with blue accent trim and nailheads. French doors allow the sunshine in, while the opal linen drapery with Scalamandre trim and the leopard-linen sheer shades soften the room. The bleached Louis XV chest, circa 1760, allows an additional serving space, while the oversized Louis Philippe gold mirror adds depth to the room.

This room is a delightful space for friends and family.

‘Some Like It Hot’

BEDROOM 1/BATH

T

his bedroom design was influenced by the Hollywood glam vibe requested by its future 14-year-old tenant. The initial design meeting resulted in the selection of pops of fuchsia and gold, coupled with lush velvet accents and classic black and white. The use of a variety of bold patterns and textures, all within a narrow color scheme, creates just the right amount of drama.

A soft pink wall color gives the room a subtle glow to complement the rich furnishings. The room is cozy and sophisticated but also practical for a teenage girl.

A desk was incorporated for her to use as a homework station or as a vanity. It is paired with a vanity chair that was recovered with the same fabric as the custom channeled headboard.

The window seats are a favorite feature of the designers. They provide symmetry and make the space usable. Using floor pillows on one side and fun stools on the other, two spaces were created for her and her friends to enjoy. The selection of blush bedside table lamps, gold pendant and sconce lights represent the vibe of the room perfectly.

Local artist Sarah Soule Webb, of SSW Studios, was commissioned to create an original painting inspired by an iconic Marilyn Monroe photograph.

Elements of the bedroom were brought into the bathroom to marry the spaces. In the bathroom is a one-of-a-kind hand-painted design, which has become a signature in most of the designer’s clients’ homes.

‘Feminine Melody’

T

he upper gallery features the figurative paintings of internationally acclaimed artist Anna Razumovskaya of Ontario, Canada. Her female forms are fluid, elegant and intimate. The mostly neutral color palettes also offer hints of peach and lavender. These colors led to the selection of two other artists’ works to diversify the collection.

Sharon Till of San Francisco, California, and You JingSheng of Xiamen, China, have considerably brighter hues in their artworks. Those oranges, purples and pinks complement Razumovskaya’s paintings, while their contrasting lineworks create variety within the gallery.

LAURA LEE THOMPSON AND NICK BRUNO Mountain Brook High School seniors Laura Lee Thompson and Nick Bruno are not your average high schoolers. These two Mountain Brook seniors have been awarded the distinct opportunity to work as Junior Designers in this year’s ShowHouse. Laura Lee will attend the University of Alabama in the fall majoring in business, and Nick Bruno will attend Auburn University’s school of architecture.

Although they’re attending rival schools, Laura Lee and Nick agree on one thing: boring is not in their vocabulary. They both have an innate sense of creativity and a flair for making things uniquely stylish.
