EDITOR’S NOTE

Let’s celebrate love

G

enuine question for you, dear reader. Should I be married at 40 years of age? ‘The Birthday’ is looming. Well, I have a few months up my sleeve. I’m not really phased about age, and when it comes to marriage, I’ve never felt the pressure to do the deed. In fact, if I had entertained ‘the deed’ any earlier, it would have been to the wrong person! I’ve done my best to live a life that suited me – but all of a sudden, something has started to gnaw away at my sensibilities…so, what is this niggling feeling? Who am I trying to impress here?! I happily consider myself in a Common Law marriage. It’s been eight years, and neither of us is going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, I think I ask my partner to marry me at least several times a week. Maybe it’s my way of saying that I feel like we are already married. Spring is here, and it’s the start of wedding season once again. I’ve mentioned before my work as a wedding celebrant. I absolutely love a good wedding. I have married everyone you could possibly imagine – high school sweethearts, internet lovers, even a second marriage involving the same people. I’ve stood by as a groom had his wedding ring tattooed on (Hi, Nik!) and I’ve even danced with a newlywed couple to the Friends theme as they walked back down the aisle. I’ve been part of a wedding conga line with a folk band, and I’ve married mates in a hurricane on the beach. I guess the point of all of this is, love comes in so many incredible iterations. It’s not for everyone, and it’s more than enough for some. It might include a huge wedding, with everyone you love there, or it might be a quiet resolve for the two of you. Embrace it. Love is a celebration, whether you’re four or almost 40. Warmest,

AROHA STRING QUARTET

BRASS, STRINGS, SING!

DAVE DOBBYN: OPEN UP

Known for passionate musicality, impressive technique, and multicultural innovation, The Aroha String Quartet is set to perform two British works for oboe and strings: Britten’s Phantasy Quartet, the first piece that bought him international recognition, and Bliss’s gorgeous Oboe Quintet. A third work is Refrain by award-winning New Zealand composer Alex Taylor.

With a voice straight from the golden age of soul, country, and rockabilly music, Tami Neilson’s powerful voice can take on big ballads, heartfelt gospel, and old-style rock ‘n’ roll – with a sky-high beehive to match. Accompanied by an epic line-up of guests, band, and 12-piece orchestra, Rolling Stone called her ‘a fire-breathing belter on her own terms’. If you love music, you will love Tami.

Dave Dobbyn has written the soundtrack to Kiwi lives, with a string of hits including Slice of Heaven and Welcome Home, and he is heading our way. Thanks to Blue Smoke, Dave will perform some hidden gems from his catalogue alongside much-loved anthems, with his longstanding rhythm section of local musician Jo Barus on bass. Christchurch musician Will McGillivray will be the supporting act.

Capture your fertility

S

ingle women today do have options when it comes to planning their future fertility, says Dr Sarah Wakeman from Fertility Associates Christchurch. “We want to help women plan their future fertility, single or in a relationship and then make a choice that is right for them. More and more, we see women feeling the pressure to have a career, own their own home, and to ideally have found ‘Mr Right’ and it doesn’t always happen in that order. Or if they have, it might be too soon to have that conversation.” So, what is egg freezing? It is a way to ‘capture’ your fertility in time – if you are 35 years of age, your eggs will remain 35, until you might need them in the future. This procedure is the first half of an IVF cycle, where the ovaries are stimulated using medication followed by the collection of eggs which are then frozen and stored using a process called vitrification.

Who should consider it? Egg freezing can help women in their 20s or 30s – that may be single or in a relationship – who want to preserve their fertility for future options. In a few years, depending on their relationship status, they may come back to fertilise their eggs or consider treatment with a sperm donor. What is important? There are two important factors that impact the success of a future pregnancy through egg freezing: the woman’s age at the time of egg freezing, and how many eggs she has in her’ ovarian reserve’. An AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) test can check the ovarian reserve. Don’t wait out your fertile years – if you’re single, in a new relationship, or just not ready to try for a baby yet, you do have options. Come and talk to one of the experts about egg freezing. They also have free nurse phone consultations, which is a great way to start your fertility plan.

T

he skin is the largest organ in the human body, and we don’t often think of it as such – Emma Lewisham’s mission is to get us to treat our epidermis with respect, and in turn, our bodies. Her skincare range, Emma Lewisham, came about following a discussion with a doctor about what she was using on her skin when she was looking to start a family. He revealed to her that ingredients in some traditional products like hydroquinone were toxic and harmful to the body. Hydroquinone is banned in several countries, and New Zealand is lagging behind on the regulation front. “It was really clear to me at that point that I did want to move to wearing cleaner, natural skincare because I did believe there was a credible link to what we use on our skin being linked to our health,” Emma says. Used to using premium cremes and serums, Emma was looking at natural products on the market like argan oil and shea butter but realised they would not deliver the same results. This set her on the journey of Emma Lewisham skincare, to prove to the beauty industry and consumers that it is possible to produce luxury skin products that perform without compromising health. This struck a chord with Ballantynes. The store’s beauty buyer Caroline Fallow said that the reputation and quality of the products were big draw cards. “Emma reached out earlier in the year about the range. I loved the concept behind the brand and how concise the line-up was; it seemed very results-driven and easy to understand what to expect from each product. Over the next couple of months, I saw so much positive feedback

online about the efficacy of the products I couldn’t hold off any longer – it just seemed like the perfect time to launch and support a local New Zealand brand,” Caroline says. The range has a palette of clean skincare options available. All products are free of any nasty bits and include a natural preservative, while other green brands often use synthetic alternatives. A commitment to sustainability is bolstered by eco-friendly packaging, ethical sourcing of ingredients, and a recycling programme – The Emma Lewisham Beauty Circle. Caroline said this provided further reason for Ballantynes to stock the brand. “I feel sustainability is very much a part of the journey Ballantynes is on; internally, we are constantly refining the way we operate to lessen our impact on the environment. It is an ongoing learning experience, so to work with companies that place sustainability at the forefront of their brands is hugely inspiring.” The scientifically proven results also are a significant selling point. Upon independent testing, the products not only rivalled synthetic brands but outperformed them in some metrics – Skin Reset won an international award for best serum last year. Caroline says this reputation preceded the product range and they have sold much of the opening order. “It seems as though our customers already know and love the range, so for it be available now at Ballantynes seems like the perfect fit.” With more products to come, Emma is also taking on other challenges. “My next step is to push to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to review and update our outdated banned ingredient list,” Emma says.

Trees and turrets

T

he Riccarton Tea House is a distinctive building; there is no other like it in Australasia. Having a proud place as a gem on the Canterbury Plains since it was built in 1903, in the style of an Edwardian country homestead featuring romantic turrets and wrap-around veranda, this restored historic venue has all the modern facilities. Set in its own private parkland sheltered by magnificent trees and overlooking a stunning water feature, The Tea House is the perfect venue for ceremonies on the lawns, photographs under the trees, canapés and drinks on the veranda, and receptions with guests seated eating indoors at intimate round tables. Constructed to mark the 50th anniversary of the Canterbury Jockey Club, the building was erected as a place for women to enjoy race days. This was ten years after women were given the right to vote in New Zealand, but females were still not allowed in the Stewards Stand at the time. In the 1940s, the Tea House became a dormitory for soldiers departing for WWII. In 1945, it was turned in to a makeshift hospital during the flu epidemic. Later in the 1950s and 60s, the Tea House, with its sprung wooden floor, became a popular dance hall as well as party and wedding venue. At some stage in the 1960s, the verandas were enclosed, and the glazed doors removed to provide more internal space. The once-bustling Tea House became a quiet place. For more than 30 years the

building sat and deteriorated. With the help of community trusts, passionate and skilled people, reconstruction and restoration began in the mid-2000s. Care was taken to ensure best trade practice was used and that all visible new work matched the original. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the restoration of the Tea House meant the structure was returned to its former glory. Since then, it has operated as a premium location for weddings and auspicious events for Cantabrians. Now completely restored to its original design, it features a wide veranda and two large roof turrets, giving it a pavilion-like appearance. Complementing the exterior features are the unique tongue and groove walls. Ceremonies can be arranged outside on the lawn, where you’ll enjoy a beautiful parkland setting with a wide selection of indoor venues and outdoor areas. Riccarton Park wedding co-ordinators aim to make it easy and trouble-free – helping you bring all your dreams to reality, with professional, friendly service and an excellent reputation for versatility, exceptional food, and competitive pricing. This is truly a venue with old-world charm and steeped in history – with the most iconic story. Other spaces on site such as The Balmerino Room and Phar Lap, both within the Club Stand, and Show Gate are available alongside The Tea House, meaning there’s multiple venues spaces for a myriad of uses.

CITY SCENE

Perfectly placed

I

magine the boost to our central city if an additional 200,000 hotel nights were booked in the next three to four years. That is the likely number of hotel bookings that will be stimulated by the 67 events confirmed to-date for Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre – this equates to keeping two 300-room hotels full for almost one year. The events will also see attendees inject a healthy dose of cash – around 40 million dollars – into the local economy as business event travellers tend to spend about twice as much as leisure visitors. With the central location of Te Pae Christchurch, inner-city restaurants, bars, shops, and hotels are well placed to reap the rewards of those events. The big question, of course, is how our new business events venue will be impacted by COVID-19, given that the conference and travel sectors have been some of the hardest hit by the virus. The completion of Te Pae Christchurch has been impacted; border closures mean some lucrative international events have been postponed or cancelled, and there is worldwide uncertainty in the convention sector. “It has become clear that beyond COVID-19 there will be pent up interest in business events and with our effective response to the virus, New Zealand is an attractive, safe travel destination,” says Te Pae Christchurch general manager Ross Steele. “The desire to meet remains strong as people – more than ever – want that face-toface connection with their peers.”

In the short term, Te Pae Christchurch is focusing on attracting local and national events, and Australasian events for when the trans-Tasman border reopens. It takes up to three or four years to secure big events, so work is continuing with international event organisers. Many of the events booked will showcase our local sector strengths in growth industries such as medicine and agricultural technology. “Convention centres not only provide economic value for the cities they are based in, but also drive opportunities for social connection and knowledge sharing.” A prime example of this is the Aotearoa New Zealand Anaesthesia Scientific Meeting, which is taking place in November 2021. “With everything the city has faced over the past decade, our medical experts have unique frontline experience and valuable insights that their international colleagues want to hear about first-hand,” Ross Steele says. The centre has also adapted its operations, developing new hybrid conference offerings for events where some delegates are unable to travel. “Because we are a new venue, we are fortunate to feature all the right equipment to support hybrid events.” Te Pae Christchurch will also profile the best of our regional cuisine and beverages to the world when the first visitors arrive next year. Akaroa Salmon and Sherwood Estate Wines are already on the menu, and other local suppliers will be added shortly.

FOR QUIET AND CALM A considered and pragmatic approach from Dalman Architects means Presbyterian Support’s new home Te Korowai can ‘cloak all who enter with safety, strength, and connection’.

WORDS Joshua Brosnahan PHOTOS Stephen Goodenough ARCHITECT Dalman Architects

T

e Korowai is the home of Presbyterian Support, offering a quiet and calm environment while accommodating a range of very specific functions. CEO Barry Helem mentions the building’s name translates to ‘cloak’, which “signifies safety, warmth, strength, and connection for staff and clients alike.” “Our mission is to support children, young people, families, and older people to be safe, strong, and connected, so it was important that our building is a space where they would feel welcomed and safe.” Te Korowai’s interior design is warm and inviting to help relax clients who may be feeling anxious. A reception with a discrete waiting area includes a playroom for young children. Counselling is offered in comfortable meeting spaces designed with privacy and safety in mind, and a large seminar room comfortably accommodates 40 people. The aim is to offer security, acceptance, character, and reflection to its users and visitors, with a design sought to imbue the building with a softness and comfort. There’s been a concerted effort to include individuality and difference, avoiding a hard-edged commercial aesthetic. The large western roof overhangs represent arms reaching out to embrace and welcome the wider community into the building. Metalcraft Roofing was the supplier of the metal roofing and cladding, which was designed with style and performance in mind, and is Metalcraft Roofing’s standing seam roof profile. The high ribs create strongly defined

shadow lines, and as they’re combined with concealed fixings, allow for superior weather performance. With CS Canterbury Roofing as the installer, the finished look is seamless, particularly around the windows which are various shapes throughout the façade. As the main contractor, Contract Construction was eager to work with such a collaborative team of consultants on this build. General Manager John Cleary mentions the pleasure in being ‘part of a project that can make a true difference to people’s lives in the community’. The 600 metre-squared, two-storey building is built from a mix of structural steel frames and concrete walls and floor. The internal space is fitted out with a variety of areas: a reception, offices, meeting rooms, counselling rooms, staff room, and an external first-floor deck. A purpose-built ground level enclosure holds a mechanical plant and other machinery. Te Korowai has an efficient external envelope with high levels of insulation and insulated glazing units. In addition, existing trees to the east and north have been retained to help reduce heat build-up. External louvres help moderate heat gain. The layout of the building allows the space and configuration to be altered and adapted for changing uses and functions. The use of natural light and energy, low energy LED lighting, and an efficient mechanical plant helps lower the building energy usage and improves the building’s environmental footprint. A well-appointed and light-filled stairwell encourages walking between floors. Secure

bike parking and shower facilities are provided for staff. Dalman Architects’ Anton Tritt says that working with the team at Presbyterian Support was a very ‘positive and rewarding experience’. “The project team thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of delivering a people-friendly building with an emphasis on the well-being and enrichment of both the staff and visitors to Te Korowai. “The design ignored fashionable architectural mores and sought to focus on

the well-being and comfort of the building’s users and visitors. Soft, warm spaces filled with natural light, complemented with a range of textures and colours, give the building’s interior spaces a feeling of calmness and peace. The design provides for access to external spaces and gardens to ensure a balanced work environment for staff and visitors.” Dalman Architects certainly has created a building of light and calm that presents a safe and nurturing environment for all inhabitants.

Inspiring spaces

A

local architectural firm, Three Sixty Architects, has gained recognition for designing an iconic location – The Welder on Welles Street. The mixed-use space, which opened its doors late last year, is home to a yoga studio and eateries through to locally made, artisan gifts and homewares. The firm was given the brief to repurpose the individual buildings to form a series of mixed-use tenancies and public spaces, transforming them into a one-stop-shop for health and wellbeing. Thanks to the success of this project, the firm won a Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) Local Architecture award (Canterbury) for the commercial space category. “Winning an award for this type of development in this category signifies that existing spaces, although initially awkward, can be utilised in a contemporary way to fit the needs of an emerging city,” Nick Wortelboer from Three Sixty Architects says. The team worked alongside Box 112, known for its appreciation of the importance of working with existing buildings left in the city; together creating the unique look and feel of The Welder.

Each tenancy has its individual identity, yet each one fits seamlessly into the overall design rationale. “The open layout has sought to create a language that unifies them with signage, planting, and ingenuity, contributing to the laneway concept.” When questioned as to what aspects of design stood out the most once the building was completed, the central space in the atrium and the material aesthetic of the project came to Nick’s mind. The atrium is an inviting and light-filled space and the materiality of the development is full of genuine, old-world charisma and tactile materials. Three Sixty Architects’ approach to working with clients is people focused. “Architecture must meet the needs of the people who commission and use it. Our depth of experience has taught us the value of genuine engagement. We work closely with each client to understand their particular needs, before devising imaginative solutions that expand on possibilities while meeting constraints.”

Blue cod shumai WITH WHIPPED COD ROE, CAVIAR, AND SEAWEED CRACKER Midnight Shanghai believes Chinese food has a lot more to offer than what Cantabrians are used to experiencing. The chefs combine European cooking techniques and hand-picked local ingredients that make sense together and educate people about how casual and modern Shanghai-style dining can be. New Zealand’s abundance of fresh seafood means head chef Cian Curtin uses his international experience to put forward the taste of the South Pacific, presented in a traditional Chinese fashion with a Midnight Shanghai spin. SERVES 4

Whipped Cod Roe 150g white bread 150g cod roe ½ red onion, diced 2 cloves of garlic 500ml olive oil 1 lemon, juiced X.O Oil 250ml oil 150g X.O sauce Squid Ink Dumpling Dough 125ml of lukewarm water 250g of strong flour 2 tsp of squid ink Blue Cod Filling 250g blue cod fillets 120g prawn meat 2 tablespoons of salmon roe 1 spring onion, finely sliced 5g of ginger grated 2g of salt 2g of pepper

The day prior, add your squid ink to water. Slowly add this mix to flour, mixing by hand. When a dough starts to form, lightly flour the surface and knead for five minutes. Wrap with cling wrap – you’ll need to let this rest in the fridge overnight. Soak white bread in water. Squeeze water out of the bread, add all ingredients minus the oil to a food processor. While blending, slowly add 250ml of olive oil to emulsify. Remove mix from the food processor and pass through a fine sieve. Return purée to the food processor, and slowly add remaining oil. Season this with salt, white pepper, and juice of one lemon. In a pan, heat your oil to 60°C. Add this to your X.O sauce, and blend with a stick blender. Strain through a sieve with a blue cloth and set aside. Add the blue cod, prawn, ginger, salt, and pepper to the food processor. Remove from blender and fold through spring onion and salmon roe. Warm two spoons of cod roe in a thick based saucepan – you don’t want to cook it as it will thicken; just gently heat. Steam the shumai for four minutes. Put the warmed roe in the centre, and then use the back of the spoon to push it out into a flat circle. Place three shumai in the centre and garnish the plate with salmon roe, X.O oil, and coriander.

Small batch brewed with only the best organic ingredients, this unique brew is double fermented to produce a clean, crisp finish, which is certified organic, low in sugar, and preservative-free. A great subtle flavour trumps the lolly-water alternatives out there.

Soho Black Collection’s Valentina Syrah is a beautifully spiced and fragrant wine with layered florals. Award-winning winemaker James Rowan has created a Waiheke Syrah that is synonymous with opulence, extravagance, and femininity – warm berry fruit and black plums worthy of a decadent Roman Emperor. Inspired by Valentino; created for lovers of perfection.

Move over pink gin! Exclusive to Super Liquor, Greenall’s Blueberry Gin is made by infusing Greenall’s Original London Dry Gin with real blueberries, and no added sugar. Perfect for spring, try pairing it with elderflower tonic and a garnish of blueberries. Greenall’s is the original handcrafted British gin – Original and Wild Berry are also available.

Commitment to cavoodle

A Chris Parker, Comedian fb.com/itschrisparker @chrisparker11

lways an emcee, never a bride. It seems to be the prophecy for many ‘fun gay men’ such as myself. Of the six weddings I’ve attended in my life, I’ve emceed four of them. It’s from this experience I can confidently say: all weddings are indistinguishable. Bunting, polaroid cameras, and some distant cousin called ‘Axel’ adorned in black Dirty Dogs and fedora, smoking with a waitstaff around the back of the portaloos. It is easy for me to feel cynical about it all and considering it was a right not even granted to ‘fun gay men’ such as myself until seven years ago, it’s also something I’ve even questioned the worth of doing in the first place. It would be disingenuous of me to say that a small part of me isn’t jealous of the couples I announce to the floor to shuffle awkwardly around to Ed Sheeran for their first dance. The public declaration of love is such a firm and clear line in the sand – a powerfully romantic way to break up the Ninety Mile Beach that is a relationship. And while I’m aware of how

cool I sound when I say marriage is just an heteronormative financial contract, a little part of me also delights in the thought that someone might gift me a nice cutlery set. Is there anything better than free cutlery? To proudly declare your commitment to a stranger you swiped right on five years ago, in a way also feels uniquely radical. But for my boyfriend and I, we want to define the framework for that declaration. We’ve compromised, no wedding, no churches, and no Ed Sheeran. Instead, a Dog Ownership Ceremony. What better way for two fun gay men to declare their commitment to one another than vowing in front of family (including Axel) to raise a highly demanding cavoodle together for the rest of their lives, or until the ice caps melt/second global pandemic strikes? I guess this doesn’t make me any different to the other brides organising their unique weddings either, does it? PS. I’ve set up a registry at Bally’s.

HUMANS OF ŌTAUTAHI

Rachel CENTRAL CITY

“I thought life would look a particular way, but it just doesn’t look the way I thought it would. I call it my Plan B life. “There’s been some challenges in my life: endometriosis, infertility, childlessness (as opposed to childfree), divorce – that all makes for a pretty shitty story. I mean, it does make me who I am, but I want a more empowering version of that. When I turned 45, I was like, ‘This is technically the middle; halfway if I live to 90. What’s the second half of my life going to be about?’ “I love storytelling, and it’s time to rewrite the story of the first half of my life. And I’m ready for another love story. Hence, I’m doing online dating. “I feel like I’m learning how to date like a man, to be detached – 10 individual guys; 10 individual dates. It feels like I’m playing a game because it IS unnatural. I’m learning from it as I go, so none of it is wasted. “The first guy, I really liked. During lockdown, we talked every day for two weeks,

including video calls and then actually met briefly and it went really well, and then he just disappeared – went AWOL. “Then he sends intermittent texts, like, what’s that about? New guy number two, a date number three, number four cancelled, another number four cancelled; today’s the last chance with a new number four. “I know I want to be met romantically in a relationship, and I don’t know how that will look. And it depends on who shows up. And I have to show up equally. It’s not about ‘come at me life!’ – I need to live my values. “I’ve walked through this part of the red zone a few times, and it’s so weird that there are no houses for most of the street and then, there’s my childhood home. I had such dreams and ambitions as a child and a teenager; dreams of a happier life. “So, this is my reclaiming of my story. You know, it’s healing. It sums up my love/hate of my city, and now I’m making peace with it. “I’d just like a bold, colourful life.”
