EDITOR’S NOTE

A month to bet on

N

ovember has a certain air about it, don’t you agree? We’ve long forgotten the frosts and bare trees, and flourishes of florals and lush greenery have taken over. We’re mowing the lawns more often, doing dinner on the deck, and even considering the beach again. Summer is seconds away. It’s a month where we come out of a collective hibernation and start to thaw – and for many here in Canterbury, a significant first stop on the shortcut to summer is Race Day at Riccarton Park. A quintessential Cantabrian event that we all experience at least once in our lives – for some it’s an annual event, with plenty of bubbles, extensive outfit planning, and an eager countdown to the day, while others are just after a quick flirt with the fillies. Either way, it’s an experience unparalleled: the atmosphere, the thrill of the chase, dressing up to the nines. Not to mention winning a bet or three. This year will be my second ever year at the races. In some ways, it’s more important than the first, as I know what to expect, and I’m excited about it! I’ve confessed in the past that I’m not much of a formal dresser (hello, typical Kiwi guy) but last year was an enormous amount of fun. This year, I’m extending the invite to a larger group of friends, wearing a floral suit that really pushes my sartorial boundaries, and preparing myself for a day of fun.

After all, that’s what it’s all about, taking a punt! Take a bet yourself, and see if you can spot me in the crowds.

Racing perspective

C Kia Dirkson, Fashion & Beauty Editor

yclical celebrations have a way of shaping and defining a year. Those events that return annually call for preparation and pomp from the attendees and nothing better represents that in Canterbury than Cup and Show Week. My first dealings with the races as they are known were walking the runways as a model for Portfolio. I was up close and personal with filial fashion and what it meant to each individual to curate the day’s attire with minuscule detail and design. These past few weeks, I have immersed myself into the racing world with benefit dinners, hat sittings, and most importantly, working alongside the newly appointed Riccarton Fashion Coordinator June Youngman. I privately photographed June in my studio where I learnt of her multiple award-winning competition ensembles and that she brings expert and international knowledge to the events. My family attended The Preakness throughout my life, but I was truly honoured for her time in educating me on what racing fashion is truly really about.

14

WORLD invited Avenues to the preview of Seventh and Figgs’ latest hat collection as a precursor for all that is to come. As far as my hat history goes, I don’t think that I saw my grandmother’s head uncovered outside of the house, ever. She was a staunchly religious fashion aficionado which left her head dually covered. I adopted this and have applied it to my selections for a week of fashion where I will be serving as a judge for The Ladies Day at Riccarton Racecourse. I have selected Christchurch millinery legend Roz Wilmott-Dalton to create a bespoke look to complete my outfit. She too is an awardwinning designer having trained in Europe and living in her native Canterbury where she creates hats for all occasions which are also available for hire. For this month’s couture collection, I have made a selection of pieces that could complement any outfit you have planned for the races: a mix of milliners, men’s fashion, and simple statement pieces to celebrate in style.

IN GOOD COMPANY

Natura, naturally WORDS Liam Stretch PHOTOS Sarah Rowlands

T

he body is a temple, and like all good temples, it deserves spring cleaning. Setting out to dust off the cobwebs with a holistic health approach is husband and wife, and business partners, Bridget and Henrik Prütz. They met in Europe while Bridget was travelling and Henrik, a Swedish native, was studying at Barcelona College of Chiropractic. They’ve now settled in Bridget’s hometown, Christchurch, and established the chiropractic practice Natura – a reflection of the pair’s guiding principles and values; an embodiment of who they are and how they love their life. “Natura offers family holistic healthcare. We have an emphasis on integrating the art, science, and philosophy of Chiropractic. We also support our practice members using the latest non-invasive scanning technology so they can track their progress and understand what’s going on in their nervous system.” As the drivers behind the business, the couple perform different but complementary roles. Henrik is the chiropractor, and Bridget is the creative energy and the ‘behind the scenes’ of Natura. As well as liaising and communicating with practice members, she also works with other holistic healing modalities and facilitates women’s wellness retreats to support the Natura family with an extra layer of support as it’s needed. At the Bealey Avenue studio, the environment of the space is a vital element. “It was our intention to create a space that encourages and supports the parasympathetic nervous system response as soon as you walk in the door.”

The pair hold the belief that the body is connected to the natural world; there is ample capacity for healing if that relationship is restored. “Chiropractic care ‘takes the cuffs off nature’. By restoring the vertebrae to its natural position, you release the flow of nerve impulses. When the nervous system is functioning properly, and the brain and body are communicating it supplies the body with what it needs for wellbeing; it allows the body to heal itself and return to its natural state which is health.” A dysfunction in the nervous system is known as vertebral subluxation. This can result in communication problems between the brain and the body along the spinal cord – the “information highway that oversees the function of every cell, every tissue, every organ, every muscle, every movement”. This can translate to seemingly unrelated health challenges: digestion issues to menstrual problems, respiratory issues to sleep problems. Dr Henrik is trained to locate, analyse, and correct these. Along with like-minded chiropractors in Christchurch, Natura offers a gift culture payment. This means “that our practice members decide what they pay for their adjustments. We have fixed fees for the first two visits, and then we utilise a gift culture system in order to make regular holistic health care more accessible and sustainable”. Natura has truly aimed to make a healthy body and mind accessible to all that share this city. It’s a new season – is it time you had a check-up?

Betting on Ōtautahi The month of November in Ōtautahi has long been heralded as a welcome symbol of our summer months. There’s everything from suits, heels, and hats – and a cheeky bet – to long hot weekends filled with events and fun. It’s the precursor to the silly season, and our city soaks up the atmosphere like a lamb feeding at Show Week. With so much of the new and exciting out there, it’s important to take note of what is on offer. With BLOOM in full swing, there is an occasion on offer for everyone. So, dust off your hat, grab your SPF, and get out and enjoy the city!

27

CHRISTCHURCH IN BLOOM

S

pring. It’s our thing here in Ōtautahi Christchurch. It’s ‘nor-west winds and blossom snowstorms, longer days and spectacular sunsets; it’s daffodils down Bealey Ave and gardens awash with colour. It’s also when the city comes alive with festivals, live music, horse racing, cultural performances, art, and fashion. We call this BLOOM – a spring celebration of events, making Ōtautahi the place to be this season. As we head down the home straight towards summer, things only get bigger in November as we finish the BLOOM season with a flourish. ChristchurchNZ General Manager of Destination and Attraction Loren Heaphy says ensuring a vibrant city and strong visitor economy is a vital part of the city’s response to the social and economic impacts of Covid-19 – and BLOOM contributes to this. “The central city was severely impacted by the Covid Level Two due to a reliance on visitors and discretionary spending by office workers. BLOOM not only drives attendance to key events but encourages residents and visitors to explore the city’s retail, hospitality, and culture offerings. “So far we’ve seen a great response to BLOOM, and the impressive November schedule is the jewel in the BLOOM crown – we’re encouraging residents to invite their friends and family to come and enjoy the fantastic event line up here in Ōtautahi Christchurch,” said Heaphy.

BLOOM is just the beginning. Following hot on the heels of BLOOM is the Summertimes programme including Bread & Circus Backyard Buskers festival, live concerts, wine and food festivals, and international sporting events. You can grab a coffee and wander the Scape Public Art Walkway and experience fourteen legacy and a number of new public artworks by local artists. Cast your vote for ChristchurchNZ’s People’s Choice Award using the QR codes on each installation. It’s not November in Ōtautahi without the races. Enjoy the New Zealand Cup Meeting at Riccarton Park Racecourse with excitement, glamour, and outstanding racing across three days. The atmosphere, excitement, and spring vibes at the IRT NZ Trotting Cup Day are unbeatable! Don’t miss the Sweet Mix Kids on the BLOOM stage. Follow up with the Show Day Races on Canterbury Anniversary Day. And with Show Day missing from the November calendar for our city, why not take a trip to Hazlett’s City Farmyard? Who can resist lambs, calves, bunnies, ducklings, and chickens? Come and meet the animals and enjoy a day in the central city – bookings are essential. With August spending in the central city down four per cent, compared to the same month last year and tourism-related industries showing an even bigger decrease, it’s more important than ever to support our local events and businesses.

DON’T MISS Indie rock faves Mako Road, 13 November Vantage Criterium National Championships, 15 November Mitre 10 Canterbury vs Auckland – The Ranfurly Shield, 15 November Go Live! Festival – Christchurch’s biggest live free music festival, 19–29 November

FASHION IN THE FIELD WORDS Kim Newth PHOTOS Sarah Rowlands

S

haking up the glamour stakes at Riccarton Park for this year’s Cup Week is 2020 fashion coordinator June Youngman, who is encouraging a more open field of contestants for the much-anticipated ‘best dressed’ events. For the first time ever, winners will be selected using a Melbourne Cup-style points system that ties judging strictly to the outfit. Points will be awarded on style and originality, grooming, coordination, millinery, and overall look. June hopes the change will prove popular and would love to see real diversity with contestants stepping forward this November. “That is one of the reasons I wanted this job: to make a difference, make women feel comfortable in their own skin,” she says. “No-one will be judging you on your looks or size. It’s all about what you are wearing. We will encourage any outfit, provided it’s day time attire. I’d say give Riccarton Park a go, and you will not be disappointed.” New contestants this year can look forward to a dedicated fashion area with its own hospitality services. There are some great prizes up for grabs, including a ten night travel package with AwayToGo, and a chance to represent the region at Ellerslie in March 2021. June is overseeing all the Cup Week fashion events at Riccarton Park, culminating in Cup Day (14 November) – Fashion in the Field 2020 on the Tea lawn, which will provide a fantastic backdrop for the event. June has been busy in the lead-up, organising judges, designers, models, and photographers, writing rules for judges and contestants and taking registrations. On the day, it’s her job to make sure everything runs smoothly, (and she plans on looking

gorgeous too, wearing something special from Katerina Boutique at The Tannery). Cup Week is practically on a par with Christmas for June and her husband Kent, who eagerly anticipate being trackside every November; it’s an annual tradition that’s become simply unmissable. “For me, it’s all about the fashion; watching everyone all dressed up and having fun. I even pick my horses on how good they look!” It’s all a world away from June’s farm machinery business in North Canterbury, where her usual dress code is gumboots and overalls. She and Kent share a background in construction and built houses all over the country before settling in North Canterbury to be close to Kent’s family. June discovered her taste for fashion through a friend who loved dressing up and going to the races. “She took me to my first race event in 2011 and that’s where it all started.” June has since won many sashes including Best Dressed at Addington and Te Rapa, Purposely Beautiful Award at Riccarton (November 2019, when Kent also won best dressed man), and Supreme Winner in Wellington (January 2020). She picks her own fabric – matching everything with that – and works with select milliners and designers (including North Canterbury designer/ dressmaker Jo Laurenson) to create her outfits. No matter where you sit on the fashion spectrum, June says it’s worth making the effort to dress up for Cup Day and notes that an outfit need not be expensive. “You can get some really cool designer dresses or suits in an op shop. This is a day event, so make sure anything you wear is comfortable, including the shoes!”

STYLE IS BACK IN THE CITY WORDS Joshua Brosnahan PHOTOS Rishi Samuel Patel

H

arry Winston is famously quoted saying, ‘People will stare. Make it worth their while.’ And in amongst a month of suits and hats, dresses and races, it feels apt that Working Style’s new concept store has triumphantly returned to the city. Next to the bustling Riverside Market and with a view of the Bridge Of Remembrance, the new Working Style store is the work of award-winning Canterbury-based architecture firm PRau Studio. The space has been deftly transformed at the hands of head architects Phil Redmond and Madeleine Clarke. This is the third location in the Garden City and situates the brand perfectly between other premium menswear offerings and some of the city’s best hospitality options. It’s a new home for the label that is wellpositioned to weather any storm. Like all good tales of New Zealand ingenuity, the Working Style story revolves around satisfying a basic human need: to have a sartorial edge over your fellow man. From humble beginnings as a shirting company knocking on the doors of Christchurch offices, Working Style is now considered New Zealand’s heritage brand when it comes to made to measure suits, shoes, and other key pieces. Chris Dobbs is Managing Director and is proud of this contribution to Ōtautahi’s city centre. “I feel the new store is carefully considered and curated, with the fit out from the company’s beloved Merivale store also being

incorporated into the design. Nothing has been wasted as we build on a rich heritage of craftsmanship and service.” Design elements within the new store include carefully considered use of premium materials like Travertine marble, rolled steel walls, milled brass bespoke fittings, and handmade concrete plinths. Mid-century light fittings and furniture have been sourced exclusively for Working Style, with beautiful walnut veneer and limestone chip sitting easily alongside more contemporary elements like polished concrete flooring and digital displays. The design marks a subtle change in direction, with a clean and contemporary edge clearly felt in the new store. Chris adds that Working Style is thrilled to be reinvesting in Christchurch. “Throughout Cup Week and beyond, our team look forward to providing the high standard of service you expect from us – and deserve. In these uncertain times, it has been great to be putting a post in the ground with a new store, signalling a new direction for a brand that has always held its head above the tide of an everchanging fashion environment.” With tailoring consultant Amanda on hand, you can work on perfecting a custom suit that will see you from the races to functions, to formal events and more – curated and tailored to last you a lifetime, if you let it. With a knowledgeable and talented team under the guidance of the store manager, Sean Gray, a future for the brand in the south is most definitely assured.

EVERGREEN

Backyard bliss They say changing the world starts in one’s own backyard. Making your own little patch of dirt flourish with colour, fragrance, and life can represent a slice of you, in your very own space. Summer is the most rewarding time to get amongst your greenery, where the myriad of benefits is well known and seemingly endless.

W

hether it’s perfecting a patio scene or a yard peppered with dulcet neighbourhood noise, or simply a herb garden in your apartment window – you can bring a perennial feeling with you, regardless of where you reside. By now, you’ve undoubtedly seen that plants are a mainstay rather than a trend, and our new favourite destination for foliage and flora is Monstera and Men. Based out of Greenlane, a weekend market on Southwark Street, Ben and Ben (Ben Squared if you will) are the boys behind the brand – they offer established houseplants, natives, workshops, and all without chemicals and plastic. Good work, Bens. Not of sound green thumb? Their workshops are the way to go. Someone who does happen to have green thumbs in spades (excuse the pun) is gardening legend Kim Odering. Kim’s firm grasp on the how-to of her craft comes from her background years within the family owned Oderings garden centre business. She could probably coax nature’s finest rewards from the surface of the Moon. Pragmatic, her refreshing spade-is-a-spade approach

is accompanied by reassuring traces of soil beneath her fingernails. Her genuine care and respect for nature’s offerings are matched only by that for her clients and everything that matters to them. Her latest venture Ko & co is growing from strength to strength, much like her clients’ gardens. If you don’t share Kim’s affinity for saplings and seedlings, you may wish to attend a tour organised by The Christchurch Beautifying Association. The association has been a strong advocate to make this city one where beauty is respected and encouraged, since being established all the way back in 1897. It continues to have an influence on the development of modern Christchurch by organising street and garden competitions and promoting Christchurch as the Garden City of New Zealand. Did you know that the association has provided many gifts to the city – including the Floral Clock, the original Peacock Fountain, Millbrook Reserve, the Water Wheel in the Avon River, and the Daffodil Plantings in Hagley Park?

Time well spent

I Emily Hastie, Landscape Architect, Kamo Marsh Landscape Architects kamomarsh.co.nz

have often written about the benefits of enjoying your outdoor spaces, working in your garden, and simply being around plants and trees. The list of health benefits from spending more time in nature is long and gives you plenty of reasons to invest in your landscaping. But let’s not forget, a well-designed space can also add significant value to your home. The Total Realty Managing Director, Rachel Cone, says the difference can be around five per cent of the value of the property. That’s worth thinking about when deciding how to spend any cash reserves that you might typically spend on travel. If you decide to draw on those savings to invest in your landscaping, whether you’re embarking on a major house renovation that includes landscaping or just a garden redesign or simply planting – it is always best to set a budget and consult with a professional who has the knowledge and expertise. Also, with the property market humming away, you may also be thinking of making improvements before selling. If you are wondering where to start, a foolproof plan is to add good quality materials such as paving or decking, a well-designed courtyard, plenty of fresh, healthy plants, and a lush lawn. If you are missing the luxuries that come with holidaying in this current climate, there

38

are lots of ways you can bring elements of that resort/holiday feel to your outdoor living at home. Discuss with your designer the feeling you would like to create, and they will be able to suggest ideas of how to achieve this. Focus on comfort by introducing an outdoor fire where you can gather with friends and family until late into the night. If you love to cook, then an outdoor kitchen creates a focal point for anything from weekday family dinners to big summer parties, or the Christmas Day barbeque. Seek inspiration from the colours and textures found in nature and use this to select your complementary pots, plants, outdoor rugs, throws, cushions, and tableware. Nothing evokes a destination like the smell of freshly cooked food, a scent of a particular flower, candles, and others that remind you of a favourite holiday spot. And of course, what is a summer holiday without somewhere to swim and cool off. A swimming pool is the ultimate backyard luxury and if you love water – or have children – then nothing beats it. On the other hand, if a relaxing massage and warm soak is more your style, then a spa pool is a treat you can enjoy all year round. For total relaxation, set yourself a deadline to have all those outdoor chores finished. Then pick a lemon from your new tree, pour yourself a long, cold drink, and put your feet up.

BY DESIGN

AT WATER’S EDGE Every collaboration, whether it’s a marriage, a business proposition, or the building of one’s home is a lesson in thoughtful compromise. Bringing together two distinct visions for a home is no mean feat. Still, architect Richard Dalman has created his own home with a partnership of his love of contemporary designs and minimalist detailing, and his wife Marion’s affection for water and seaside living. This is the Water House.

WORDS Joshua Brosnahan PHOTOS Stephen Goodenough ARCHITECT Dalman Architects

S

ituated on the Christchurch Estuary (Ihutai) in Redcliffs, the site of the Water House is ensconced in its coastal position – this is on the main road to Sumner Beach and extends all the way to the water’s edge. In fact, the boundary for the property falls in the water. With the challenge of construction in such a locale presented, the land was fully remediated pre-build with a combination of stone piles and a 300mm concrete slab. From the street, there is a 7.5m narrow frontage. The site angles outwards toward the water to a 14.5m wide boundary. Access to the house was obviously from the road, but Richard

and Marion’s wish to live on the water’s edge meant a long, narrow house was designed to achieve this. The couple wanted a design that would minimise the effects on the estuary, and the neighbours. The clever design allowed the pitched roof planes to be continuous the length of the building. While this is a long house, there are two distinct ‘cut-outs’; one for a service court combined with a third vehicle or small boat park, and the other a generously sized, partially covered courtyard that is a sunny retreat from the prevailing Christchurch easterly wind. A tall urn fountain bubbling 42

under a palm tree enhances the sense of serenity and quiet relaxation in this space. The entrance to the house is to the side via ‘floating’ granite steps. The lobby affords access from both the garage and front entry steps and also leads to a spacious guest suite that can be used by friends and family when they come to stay. Providing passage from one end of the house to another is a long corridor. Along this hallway, the architect has increased the width to form a gallery which provides a journey, with floor to ceiling cedar fins framing tall glass panels, and large glass sliding doors affording different views along

the way. There is even enough room for a sunny afternoon sitting area. At the end of the gallery is an atrium space that turns a corner to reveal 180-degree water views from the open plan living areas. These encompass a generous kitchen, dining and living area with continuous glazing affording floor to ceiling views across the estuary to the South Brighton Spit, Sumner Bar, and the Pacific Ocean beyond. In order to make the most of the iconic setting, one window is the largest double-glazed unit produced in Christchurch for a residence and meets the client’s requirement for an unobstructed water view.

Various other structural elements work to connect the sea with the home; sliding stacker doors open out to the deck that doubles as a pier out over the water. Marion’s love of water meant this needed to be the main focus of the house. This certainly has been achieved. Even in her home office, Richard has carefully framed a view across the courtyard and through the large glass windows of the living area out to the estuary. Despite the water focus, there are still views up to the hills behind from well-placed windows. The atrium space at the end of the gallery also provides access to the master suite via a second set of stairs framed by four-metre-high oak slats.

Heath Waters, General Manager for Clive Barrington Construction, who were responsible for the build, mentions that the stairs are one of the most notable achievements throughout the build process. “From a pure carpentry point of view, the stair balustrade appears to float above the floor and beneath the ceiling with minimal visible connection to the stair. Oak is such wonderful material to work with and the decorative blocking adds to what really is a very clever detail – tricky to execute but well worth the investment in time and planning.” Materials for the house have been carefully selected to provide a seaside aesthetic, such as aqua glass tiles to the bathrooms that shimmer

Ltd

like pāua shells, grey granite vanity tops with a tidal pattern, and two types of floor tiles that look like a stony beach and a sandy beach respectively. Oak floors, stairs, and joinery complete the light, informal look. Materials are also durable for the seaside location, utilising top quality colour coated aluminium roofing and powder-coated aluminium joinery, high-quality Resene painted vertical cedar boards, and stainless-steel fittings – all are sure to withstand its waterside location, and the changeable conditions that New Zealand is well known for. Landscaping around the house features succulents and Māori Princess Pōhutukawa that are prevalent in the Redcliffs and

Sumner area, which tends to enjoy a warmer winter than Christchurch city. Olive trees create visual privacy along one boundary; their first growing season provided a bumper crop of olives, preserved by Marion and enjoyed by many. While a glass balustrade was obvious for the deck/pier because of its height above the water, Richard and Marion did not wish to have a balustrade to the sea at the lower level. A two-tier seawall was designed and constructed to provide acceptable safety from falling code solutions, with an exposed aggregate face to the water. In a continuation of the symbiotic relationship that the house has with its surroundings, a rocky foreshore

No matter how you look at it there’s no mistaking a Clive Barrington house

was reestablished in front to encourage sea creatures to find a home. The area is often frequented by herons and kingfishers; shags dive for fish in the water immediately in front, and godwits find their summer home on the sandbanks opposite. Ihutai and the sky are always changing, making living here a delightful experience, and the careful and considered design of the Water House maximises this. Marion feels that living at the Water House is “amazing. I could never have imagined living so close to the water in Christchurch and the clever design making the most of what was a difficult site, means that we can enjoy the everchanging water and birdlife from most areas of the house”. Heath says Richard and Marion’s ability to articulate their vision, taking it from paper to a built form was absolutely invaluable to the project as a whole. “The overall aesthetic of the house really hit that ‘beach house feel’ nail on the head – the light exterior and interior with windows framing views over the estuary and creating constantly changing vistas for the inhabitants is something pretty special and while more of a design feature, it was a delight to craft it for the owners.” dalman.co.nz

HERITAGE

History with heart

F

rom a 112-year-old charitable trust facilitating the delivery of Allan McLean’s will to one of the city’s finest retirement villages, Holly Lea’s history is as long as it is illustrious. A successful runholder and philanthropist, McLean left a substantial amount of his estate to be used by The McLean Institute, incorporated in 1908 after his passing. Part of this charitable directive included operating Manchester Street’s palatial McLean Mansion (the original Holly Lea) “as a home for women of refinement or education in reduced or straitened circumstances”. Holly Lea continued to operate from the site until 1956, when the Government purchased the property, and Holly Lea made the move to Fendalton. While Holly Lea has since been transformed into a retirement village, the caring and nurturing that are the heart of its foundation remain. This dedication to providing the very best of care has seen constant investment into the facilities, and a new purpose-built village was completed

in 2006, followed by the second stage of development in 2008. Despite already boasting some of the finest living options for the over-70s, Holly Lea is stepping it up another notch, with construction now underway on the new architecturally designed Morven Apartments set amongst the gardens and streams of the conveniently located hectare site at 123 Fendalton Road. The apartment complex, split over two levels, comprises architecturally designed and spacious one and two-bedroom apartments, offering the latest in contemporary design with custom-designed and well-appointed kitchens and bathrooms. The highly anticipated apartment block offers a refined look and feel, with the same level of care and attention to detail that Holly Lea has become renowned for in its operations. Meanwhile, plans for a purpose-built facility on-site to cater for residents requiring hospital and memory assisted care will see Holly Lea continue to provide superior facilities for another 112 years, enabling Allan McLean’s legacy to live on in the heart of Fendalton.

IN DETAIL

FUTURE PROOFED COMMUNITY LIVING Your future is here, and it’s got an Alpine View.

I

ntermediate care apartments should have character. They should be architecturally designed, making the most of the sun and your privacy, and give you the independence you deserve. You can confidently say Alpine View is all that, and more. Described as a resort-style complex in Waitikiri’s Prestons Road for the ‘young at heart’, there’s a dynamic mix of stand-alone houses, serviced apartments, and a full continuum of care options available. With significant attention paid to the layout, it has been designed to look like a new residential subdivision, and each residence is stand-alone. The spacious houses feature two or three double bedrooms with walk-in wardrobes, options of a single or double garage, tiled en-suites, and a separate visitor’s toilet. French doors in the living and dining areas provide essential indoor/outdoor flow for living, and a generous 2.7-metre-high ceiling height provides space and light. The kitchens feature stainless steel appliances; a wall oven, an induction cooktop, waste disposal unit, and dishwasher drawer. It’s par for the course that all new builds are now sustainably minded. Alpine View has solar heating, convenient LED lighting, with double glazing, and tinted windows, as well as conditioning units and underfloor heating in the bathroom.

On top of beautifully appointed housing options, a health technology company, Spritely, has partnered with Qestral to offer remote health monitoring devices throughout Alpine View. From the comfort of your own residence, you can monitor health vitals such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and weight remotely, without personal contact. All of this information can be downloaded, monitored, and discussed with the Telenurse on-site via video call if need be. You’re in control! For those wanting more of a personalised, premium service, there is The Butler. The Butler incorporates Spritely-powered remote health vitals which are discretely sent to the Telenurse at the rest home and hospital healthcare hub. There’s a nutritious main meal, five days a week, and a weekly cleaning of your house and laundry service. Age-friendly technology is included in all houses and serviced apartments – this helps the Alpine View community stay healthier, safer, and more connected as you are within immediate reach of the whole village and staff, without leaving your house. It also incorporates an emergency alarm and sensors that monitor lack of movement (due to falls), and prescriptions can also be ordered and delivered to your door, monitored by a pharmacist. Spritely also means you can keep in touch with your neighbours and friends with one-touch video calls. The digital

50

noticeboard provides live communication from management. You can also view and book any of the scores of activities the village runs each month. Best of all, it’s all free of charge. Alpine’s proprietary wellness programme, TRILife, is specifically designed to help enhance your lifestyle by focusing on nutrition, exercise, and state of mind. It is a voluntary and personalised approach that enables you to track your improvements. Alpine has full-time activity staff to ensure that there is a wide range of recreational activities for a dynamic day-to-day lifestyle. There’s two ‘Alpine Adventure’ tour buses to take groups out most days – you can explore beautiful gardens, attend concerts in the city, and enjoy quirky summer fetes (and everything in between). Village activities mean you don’t need to step far to find something to do. There’s exercise, aquacise, and yoga classes, and even Tai Chi. If you’re a dab hand at the more traditional, sign up for one of the various regular games of croquet and indoor bowls. A full programme is published monthly, and the team do their best to cater to a wide range of interests. A recent performance by Marcus Winter, also known as ‘The Sandman’, wowed residents with immersive sand art and impressive speed painting.

Local songbird Ali Harper is a village regular, and Cicotica and the Starlets were well received by residents when they performed – first-class entertainment and activities are just waiting outside your door. Alpine has an ongoing series of educational speakers to interest and inspire the residents. The village recently hosted Jo Seager, and Jason Gunn entertained the crowds last year. You can step out a little further than our city with The Alpine Travel Club. Be part of the many trips planned all over New Zealand, where everything is arranged for you. Past excursions include trips to the Marlborough Sounds, the Arrowtown Autumn Festival, and the World of Wearable Arts in Wellington. Alpine sits under the umbrella of Qestral – the company currently operates Burlington Village in Redwood and is developing a state-ofthe-art village in Halswell. Further north will see more villages in Nelson, Whangarei, and Hamilton. Qestral is considered an industry leader in Aotearoa and has set new standards of education in the aged care sector. This community is established and thriving. It’s a clear frontrunner as an intermediate care facility in the city, according to residents. You can even pop in for a complimentary meal in the restaurant and experience the world-class environment for yourself! Give them a call today.

PALATE

Gluten free blueberry & honey pancakes J. Friend & Co Honey has a unique culinary point of view – to return life to the golden stuff. Other honey on the market is often made using pasteurising creaming methods, and this can strip out all the goodness and regional distinctiveness as the product is blended. Jeremy and Sharyn, the duo behind this Canterbury brand, believe that once people discover the nuances of the individual varietals, dignity to honey as something beyond a generic condiment can be restored. Their partnership with Two Raw Sisters is a heavenly duo – try their collaborative effort on this recipe; these blueberry and honey pancakes are so good that you could eat them any time of day.

1 cup buckwheat flour (blended from buckwheat groats) 1 cup coconut flour (blended from shredded coconut) 1 cup any type of milk (oat milk is used in this recipe) 3 tbsp J Friend & Co. West Coast Rich Rainforest Honey 2 tbsp chia seeds 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 cup blueberries

Blend the buckwheat and coconut into a fine flour. Add the remaining ingredients, apart from the blueberries. Blend the mixture until you have a smooth and thick consistency. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and melt your 1/2 tsp of coconut oil in the hot pan. Spoon the desired amount of mixture for each pancake into your pan. It’s best to cook each pancake for approximately two minutes on each side. Serve these pancakes with your desired toppings – try a coconut yoghurt, a smattering of hemp seeds, a nut butter, or even fresh banana and extra blueberries. Leftover pancakes will store in the fridge for up to 10 days.

The eatery’s name encompasses its values completely; it offers the best quality food and drinks to make indulging in your vices a healthy virtue. The decisiveness of the contemporary Ōtautahi consumer has been considered. The menu has been designed with every customer in mind – featuring a range of vegetarian options. Using the freshest ingredients and produce, the team has been allowed to spread their creative wings; the menu was designed by Tejas Nikam, who worked with New Zealand celebrity chef Peter Gordon at Auckland’s renowned The Sugar Club. He has combined his creative flair with a passion for the fresh and local. The menu also has sustainability in mind: line-caught fish, Canterbury Wairiri buffalo cheese, and New Zealand bred Angus eye fillet are all highlights on the menu and showcase the taste of the city and its surrounds. The most popular dish on the menu is the Wairiri Buffalo Burrata, a traditional

A HEAVENLY TRIO

PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE

CURD IS THE WORD

Sweet Soul Patisserie is collaborating with Christchurch Tramway Restaurant for yet another year, and it’s time you hop on for a ride! Enjoy one of the Tramway’s renowned four-course dinners in heritage style, as you travel through the city centre. Finish off your experience with a Sweet Soul dessert, such as the Lemon Tart and Chocolate Lover (pictured) and a wine matching. Sounds like a heavenly trio.

Feast your eyes on this saucy number from Full Time Tart. You really can’t beat a dark chocolate cake, loaded with salted caramel sauce and blanketed in the silkiest of buttercreams to elegantly disguise the pure gluttony that awaits inside. With summer just around the corner, look no further than the Full Time Tart seasonal cake menu. You’ll see a celebration of stone fruits, citrus and of course, a sunny slosh of gin.

The resident vegan baker at Bellbird Bakery at The Tannery has come up with a new treat, just in time for our summer – a zesty lemon and poppy seed bun, filled with a generous piping of lemon curd. Bellbird is well known for its artisan baked goods, specialising in sourdough bread and French pastries. Show the staff that you cycled to see them, and you’ll earn a stamp towards a free croissant! Not that you need more motivation…

CLINK!

BETS AND BUBBLES

BILLECART-SALMON BRUT ROSE

ATAAHUA 2018 CHARDONNAY

CRÉMANT DE BOURGOGNE

Listed on nearly every Michelin starred restaurant in Paris by the glass, this is considered an outstanding rosé Champagne. It boasts a bouquet of enticing wild strawberry, raspberry and floral notes with savoury/bready aromas whispering beneath. Luscious and completely mouth-watering, the berry flavours add complexity to the long invigorating finish.

Attractively fruited and beautifully ripe, the bouquet shows golden peach, baked apple, vanilla, and roasted nut characters. It’s beautifully supple and smooth on the palate with creamy mouthfeel and gentle acidity, finishing silky and lingering. Pair with scallops ever so lightly seared in butter, garlic, and a splash of white wine.

Our favourite grape Pinot Noir has its party dress on, ready for you to bid adieu to the chaos of 2020 and welcome in a new year. Like Champagne, Crémant de Bourgogne is a méthode traditionelle produced in the rolling fields of Burgundy, in France. Dry in style with a delicate palette of yellow plum and freshness of peach, it’s the Pinot that knows how to party!

The uncool kids

I Chris Parker, Comedian fb.com/itschrisparker @chrisparker11

have to be honest here, I have never understood the appeal of Cup Day. Sure, there may be some bitter side of me – due to never being invited to a Cup Day party – that has just written the entire experience off. I do fret that I’ve robbed myself of that quintessential Christchurch experience of being blind drunk, sun-burnt, and screaming at a horse that I’ve spent my course-related costs on to make me rich. I’ve never even really experienced much of Christchurch town nightlife as a whole either. The only time I ever made it into town was on the night of my Seventh Form formal. Using my friend’s fake ID, we missioned out to the strip; as soon as I stepped out of the taxi, my eyes were met with two young women engaged in a fistfight on the ground, both attempting to pull out each other’s fake hair extensions. I immediately clicked my heels three times and chanted ‘there’s no place like home’. Parties have never been something I’ve been that good at; I was convinced it was a pastime only reserved for the ‘cool

kids’. Monday morning form class at high school was always filled with stories of who lost their virginities and who had brush-ups with the police after doing ‘nos’ in a park. Naturally, I felt a pressure to overcompensate – playing catch-up at our uncool drama kid parties, where we would drink orange and vodka from the goon sack as if our lives depended on it. One fateful night, a few of the cool kids somehow crossed over to our nerdy drama kid party and were left stunned by the velocity that we were drinking at. One of the rowing boys turned to me and said, “Wow, you drama kids really party hard!” to which I replied, “We are only drinking this much because we thought that’s how much you drank”. I’ve always wondered if that’s why all the big amazing artists in this world are such booze and drugs users. Deep down they are still the uncool drama kids, trying to play catch up with cool kids and, without even knowing, overtook them years ago.

spices. We offer quality, healthy, Keto, Paleo, and gluten-free meat. We also smoke meats onsite and butcher hunters’ and home-kill meats. “It can be a challenge running a business and having young kids. I have one of each, Torben, my three-year-old boy, and his eighteenmonth-old sister Finya. She was not at all well last year and had to be on a feeding tube for five months. That’s when it’s hard with family living back in Germany, but my Kiwi friends and adopted grandparents, along with my great staff, they all helped us to get through it. We were hoping to be visiting Germany now, but obviously, Covid has put paid to that. “I don’t eat meat every day, maybe three or four times a week. I do like to have a balanced diet, though I do have a bit of a sweet tooth like a lot of butchers! So, life is busy but good! I love my job, my family, and living in New Zealand. This is home.”

“Just before I turned 17, I started work in a butcher’s shop. I had wanted to become a joiner because I enjoyed making things with my hands but got told that not only was I not strong enough, but that a woman’s place was in the office not in the workshop! I am not an office person. I love to mix with different customers every day. “I came to New Zealand when I was 19. I was looking for work, but the owner of Everybody’s Butchery didn’t have a job for me, so I bought his business instead! There were a few people who didn’t like the idea of a female taking over and changing things, but I think change is often a good thing. That’s why we don’t have the run-of-the-mill boring supermarket items. We make all our bratwursts, frankfurters, biersticks, and our big range of small goods by hand here on-site with only locally sourced meat and natural
