2020 out the door

E

very time we get here, it feels too soon! Another year is wrapped up, and you have the final issue of Avenues in hand for 2020. For a year full of stops and starts, we’ve done alright, team. I am looking forward to seeing our summer glow through to 2021, so we can finally move on from a year with more twists and turns than a cheap garden hose. This issue marks the results from our second year of The A List – would you believe this was a concept that was born from a rather spirited and engaging post on our social media channels? We love a chat about good hairdressers in Canterbury, apparently! I’m so proud to witness all the spirit and passion our readers have poured into this year’s survey. We’ve collectively embraced ‘love local’ as a concept, moving it past buzzword status. We have amazing results that showcase some of the best people among us. Our winners are touched, to say the least – in the words of one of our nominees, it means so much more to them to win the approval of our readers than the industry. The people prevail! Kia ora, Ōtautahi. Thank you so much for your input. We’re already looking forward to 2021’s The A List, where it’ll be bigger and better yet again. I hope I’m not a broken record here, but I am constantly in awe of the talent within the pages of our magazine. From our wonderfully supportive advertisers to our interview subjects, to the uber-talented Avenues team: creative director Lucy, who is immensely talented, to our superstar sales manager Shelley, our incredible writers Liam, Kia, and Kim, and the iconic imagery from Sarah that sets a precedent for our magazine. WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR This year’s best wildlife photos from around the world are on display at Canterbury Museum. Wildlife Photographer of the Year showcases 99 stunning images from the 2020 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition run by the Natural History Museum, London. Among them is the winning photo, The Embrace by Russian photographer Sergey Gorshkov. Gorshkov spent 10 months following Siberian tigers in eastern Russia before he captured his winning image, which shows an adult female marking her territory on a tree. love this warmer weather. I spent a weekend working through my spring/ summer closet and shut the door on my winter wardrobe as we transition into a new season. With flowers blooming, the bees are buzzing and so am I with what I am seeing come down the runway – comfortable style. Post-Cup Week, I am looking to lay low until the next round of festive events pops up. As an American, we celebrate a season of Thanksgiving, and I always take the time with family and loved ones to break bread in total gratitude of this time of year. A diary full of events and people to celebrate them with is a blessing in my book. With all of that coming up in the next few weeks, one would be lucky to have a Working Style jacket (above) that moves with you seamlessly from day to night. Easy style transition for working women like me is essential. A very wise and stylish woman once told me “Just because it fits you, doesn’t mean that it fits the occasion”.

Get road-wise in the red zone

A

red zoned Christchurch cul-de-sac in Burwood has been transformed into a miniature road for bikes where children can learn their road rules while having bucket loads of fun. Complete with Lilliputian-scale signs, road markings, and even a tiny roundabout, the brand new Learn to Ride Track off Brooker Avenue is open to the public and perfect for children at all stages of their cycling journey. The track is located within a nine-hectare area known as East x East – a collaboration between Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and Life in Vacant Spaces (LiVS). As the landowner of this Crown-owned red zone area, LINZ has approved LiVS’ short-term use of the space, and they have ignited the area with a raft of activities and amenities, including the cycling track. Lydia Bloy, LINZ Group Manager Crown Property Christchurch, says temporary events and activities are an important part of Christchurch’s regeneration. “We love seeing projects like this bring people to the area. East x East is a great example of how a large area of red zone land can be transformed into a family-friendly space with lots of different activities that anyone can take part in.” East x East Project Coordinator Hannah Watkinson says the Learn to Ride Track is a great place for children to gain confidence on their bikes in a controlled setting. “They can learn their road rules and have fun – whether they’re on balance bikes, trainer wheels or getting ready to ride on the road on their own.

“Christchurch is an excellent place to be a cyclist, and we hope the track helps to improve confidence and skills at a young age, making our roads a safer place for all.” As a charity, LiVS relies heavily on support from local organisations. With the track, Citycare Group was instrumental in getting it off the ground, donating services to repair the original road, paint line-markings, install road signs, and tidy up the surrounding area. Citycare Junior Project Manager Thomas Parackal says they jumped at the chance to give back to the community and draw on a partnership with the Student Volunteer Army (SVA) to assemble a group of young volunteers. “The Learn to Ride Track was a fitting project for us because of all our work looking after open spaces in Christchurch.” Sam Johnson, Chief Executive of SVA, says the group was delighted to invite students from their Service Award volunteer programme to support the project, enabling young people to solve problems in their backyard and create meaningful change within communities. Bringing this red zone area to life was an excellent result for the Citycare volunteers and young helpers from St Albans School, Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, and Papanui and Cashmere high schools, he says. Other activities to be found at East x East include a sports field, pump track, and a ninehole frisbee golf course. Since 2016, LINZ has supported almost 150 short-term projects and events in the red zone, and it actively encourages the use of Crownowned red zone land on a temporary basis.

L

earn to Surf instructor Aaron Lock, aka ‘Lockie’ hauls a load of wetsuits from the back of his surf van as he prepares for an afternoon in the waves with a bunch of beginners. It is a brisk sort of day on The Esplanade beside Sumner Beach with the mercury in the low teens and a strong onshore wind blowing salty fresh air in our faces. “It’s going to be a bit choppy,” says Aaron cheerfully, as he gathers a group of excited Rangi Ruru student surfers together. Aaron is a lifelong surfer and a bodyboarding champion who has been teaching others how to catch waves for 25 years now. This beach truly is in his blood: he grew up in Sumner, and this is where he first got on a board as a kid. “I got into it in the first place because I wanted to be at the beach all the time and as time has gone by it has progressed to sharing the fun of surf with other people…This is one of the best places in the world to learn to surf as the waves are gentle and well-suited to longboard surfing.” Two hours is all it takes to learn the basics and apparently it really doesn’t matter whether or not you fit the stereotype of a young surfer dude in the making. Aaron says he teaches 8-year-olds through to people in their 70s. Retired couples sometimes rock up to beginner classes, as do parents whose children are learning to surf. “Most people find that it’s a good way to escape and forget about the worries of the world for a few hours. Surfing,

internationally, is having a boom this year due to COVID-19 because it’s an individual sport with social distancing. We’ve had a lot of locals here suddenly deciding to do it too. This Covid year has sprung them into action, so we’re going to be busy this summer.” All equipment is supplied, including wetsuits that keep people warm in the water even on cold days. Participants just need togs, towel and sunscreen, (plus water, snacks, and a change of warm clothes). A lot of first timers learn how to stand on the board in their very first lesson, although as Aaron points out, there are plenty of thrills to be gained simply by lying or kneeling on it. “There’s this saying that the best surfer is the one having the most fun! You don’t need to be a strong swimmer to learn the basics, and we can start off small in knee-deep water if necessary.” Once the basics have been acquired, people can carry on building their surf skills with more lessons until they feel confident enough to go out independently. “We have a surf rental machine so people can surf after hours if they want to.” Learn to Surf is open year-round with the main season being September to May. Aaron used to spend his winters surfing in Bali but has instead surfed around New Zealand this year. “I’ve had a lot of trips to the West Coast and Kaikōura – there’s an amazing point break called Mangamaunu just north of Kaikoura – and my daughter and I also travelled to Ahipara, north of Kaitaia.”

Building future leaders together For the past five years, Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has contracted Crimson Education to supply a full-time Careers and Pathway Strategist to work with its students. We sit down with their current Strategist, Kristen Fox to get her unique perspective on the leaders of tomorrow and their career choices. As the Careers and Pathways Strategist at Rangi Ruru, could you tell us more about your role? I work with students one-on-one throughout their educational journey, beginning in Year 10 through to graduation at the end of Year 13. Year 10 students start their career journey by undertaking a ‘Pathways’ course which Rangi Ruru has developed, designed to allow students to explore their future options through self-exploration, learning pathways, and developing their skills for future employment. Often in Year 11, our time is spent selecting subjects to fulfil university or polytechnic requirements, which evolves

through to Year 13 where meetings focus on applying for specific programs, scholarships, gap year programs, and accommodation. What do you think makes the relationship between Rangi Ruru and Crimson Education work so well? Rangi Ruru and Crimson’s relationship blossomed over five years ago when Crimson was first coming into the edutech space. Rangi Ruru Principal Dr Sandra Hastie realised how impactful a partnership could be between the two, ensuring a seamless transition for students as they move into their adult lives. Rangi Ruru and Crimson Education work well

together because we have aligned values. We both want our girls to be their best whatever pathway they choose. Rangi Ruru provides an excellent education for students, and Crimson Education is an extension of that, providing networks that span the globe and a dedicated strategist to guide students as they make some of the most critical choices of their lives. It has been an extraordinarily successful partnership, with our girls attending top universities all over the world including New York University, University College London, Boston College, and Imperial College London. This is not a one size fits all programme, and this is evident in the range of universities and programmes students are entering – ranging from competing as a student-athlete in America, attending an elite performing arts programme, studying geophysics in London, or medicine in Dunedin. In the past two years alone, scholarship monies at Rangi Ruru have increased over 130 per cent, and the total number of scholarships awarded to students has increased by 169 per cent. What is even more outstanding is that 2020 is looking to be our best year yet as we have already surpassed 2019’s scholarship monies and the number of students receiving them.

Have you seen any trends in careers and pathways that students are choosing? Has there been an increase or decrease in any particular field or industries? I have seen a real trend in girls wanting to pursue science careers, but not necessarily the ‘traditional’ ones we all think of like medicine and engineering. I have students pursuing geophysics as they were fascinated by the earthquakes, medicinal chemistry, and chemical formulation focusing on designing healthcare and cosmetic products. This is really exciting to me as it shows girls are thinking outside of the box and creating careers they really want. I have seen a decrease in fields that will soon be automated as technology continues to improve. What advice would you give to parents when they are talking to their children about careers and pathways? I tell parents to support their children in what they want to pursue but ensure a healthy dose of reality along with it. I am a huge supporter of students having multiple options, often a Plan A, B, and sometimes even C thought out. The result of this is students – and their families – can make the choice when they have offers in front of them.

Enhancing the southern side of our central city

T

This new area includes a 40-metre mural by Oi YOU! and the DTR Crew which pays homage to the creation and evolution of street art. The South Frame is now more than 80 per cent complete. It’s likely that the Greenway will become a more popular cycle, pedestrian, and scooter thoroughfare once the remaining sections are finished over the next year. More people using the network of lanes should also help catalyse development of the adjacent land. About 15,000 new plants and trees are being added to the central city along the South Frame. The established garden beds and green screens in Mataī Common between Colombo and Durham Streets give a sense of how the completed Greenway will look. Once the section of the Greenway currently being constructed around Team Hutchinson Ford on the eastern side of Colombo Street is finished, the only remaining length will be the area around Miles Toyota, west of Montreal Street. In the future, a child could hop off a bus at the Bus Interchange and walk along the Greenway, away from busy streets, to ride the hydro-slides or swim at the Metro Sports Facility. As the South Frame progresses towards completion, another piece in the city’s complex regeneration puzzle starts to fall into place.

he South Frame, one of the lower profile elements of our central city regeneration, is taking shape. Designed to hem in and enliven the southern side of the CBD, the South Frame is a network of laneways, mainly between St Asaph and Tuam Streets. The predominant feature of the South Frame is the Greenway, a wide and leafy shared path running east to west that will eventually connect the Health Precinct and Metro Sports Facility with the SALT District, East Frame, and the Multi-Use Arena. Smaller lanes, perpendicular to the Greenway, improve access and allow for slow-speed vehicle use to service the local businesses. The first section of the South Frame to be complete, in the SALT District, demonstrates the potential of the laneway network. Lanes draw people from the street into the block and enable attractions like the popular Little High Eatery to be successful without a street frontage. Crown company Ōtākaro is completing sections of the South Frame as land becomes available. The latest length of the Greenway to open up is on the western side of Durham Street, creating an uninterrupted two-block section from Colombo Street to Montreal Street.

lanning for summer – planning fullstop, in fact – has been an integral part of my life both professionally and personally for as long as I can remember. Even before my 26 years in business, I would plan and anticipate the future with vigour. Lists, long lists, would be written, goals set (big and small), and holidays envisioned; acquisitions – and not surprisingly – property, decided on. However, out of growing wisdom or a gentle wariness, this summer and this coming year, I’d rather rest than push forward relentlessly. 2020 has been the most unusual year, and I think I’ve definitely seen the best (and the ‘far from it’) in behaviours and processes. But rather than leave me feeling disappointed, it has given me an appreciation and an insight into the reality that you cannot control everything. Normally I’d run into the Christmas period exhausted, believing that I had to do everything for everyone. I’d then work through much of my Christmas break and top it off by returning to work to start the New

Year (which I always want to be bigger than the last one) early! This year, however, the summer will be different, for lots of reasons. I want to be present, not perfect. If you think that’s original, it’s not. It’s the title of a book sent to me by an accomplished and extraordinary woman that I love. Its message is simple: slow down, breathe deeply, and rest up. I’m not jumping to my massive list of intentions. I’ll certainly review my goals and set new ones, knowing and accepting that they will be gentle and beautiful, not earthshattering. At the top is more time with the people I love, learning Te Reo, and a massive wish for good heart and health. This year has delivered some enormous personal challenges as well as some fabulous professional highs, but rather than shout ‘next’, I’m whispering ‘thanks’. And thanks to you for reading my thoughts. May 2021 bring you wisdom and joy and the knowledge that for everything there is a season. Make those seasons count for something special.

Untouched World brosotto WITH VEGAN BROWN RICE Head chef Kerry Wellman runs Untouched World Kitchen with the manager, Andrea Titterton. Like the brand itself, the food they serve represents a contemporary world with quality as its backbone. “This recipe represents vegan comfort food at its best. [It’s] equally good eaten outside on a beautiful day with a refreshing grape juice as it is in winter curled up by the fire! The brown rice risotto was inspired by a dish I had from a vegan street vendor at a market in London a few years ago. It fits with our Untouched World Kitchen ethos of simple, tasty, honest food.” SERVES 3–4 | VEGAN

Base recipe 50g finely chopped celery 10g minced fresh garlic 175g brown rice (uncooked) 200ml coconut milk 600ml water 15ml cider vinegar 15ml lemon juice Pea mixture 120g defrosted peas Approx. 4g coriander leaves (basil also works well) 5g nutritional yeast (essential for this recipe) 15ml lemon juice 35ml oil To finish 170g defrosted peas 1 courgette, thinly sliced (approx. 170g)

For the base recipe, lightly sauté the celery to soften then add the garlic. After a minute, add remaining ingredients. Bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer and cover until rice is cooked, and most of the liquid has disappeared. At this stage, the base can be cooled and kept for later or used immediately. The base recipe can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to three days. The pea mixture does not keep, as it loses its colour by the following day. Blitz all ingredients in a blender to form a paste. Set aside. To put together: place base mixture in a pan. If cold, ‘loosen’ in a microwave first. You may need to add a small amount of water to achieve the correct consistency. Add the courgette and second measure of defrosted peas. Bring the heat up to warm the vegetables through then add the pea mixture towards the end. Season well with flaky sea salt and cracked pepper (very important to get the seasoning right on this dish). Serve and finish with a sprinkle of fresh coriander (or basil if using), toasted pine nuts, and some more nutritional yeast.

Activism and innovation

W

ith any movement, there’s a long, slow uphill battle, then sudden momentum. That momentum is happening now. For me, this is [the] result of so much slog! I’ve been involved in activism for well over 20 years – I was literally carrying soy milk around with me, from café to café.” In two short years, Grater Goods has gone from a humble commercial kitchen for vegan food, to a café and bistro riding the wave of a cultural revolution. Owners Flip Grater and husband Youssef Iskrane are the pair behind the eatery – encouraging patrons to explore a menu with plenty of taste, umami, and texture. Flip, a musician, mother, and now a restauranteur, feels fortunate to be witnessing Cantabrians embrace the Grater Goods ethos. “It’s been amazing to watch plant-based eating, animal rights, and activism move with momentum – there actually is a cultural shift and attitude change around what vegan food is and how ‘doable’ it is. We’re using innovation with ancient technique.”

Youseff mentions opening Grater Goods was ‘a bit of a gamble’. “We really wanted this to become a destination, but we went about it the complete opposite way to tradition. We grew the space, rather than taking on a huge risk of empty space, or considerable financial debt.” And empty it is not. On a weekday afternoon, the space is filled with sun, music, and the aromas of lunches on their way to diners. The space is eclectic but relaxing – you’ll want to spend an afternoon here. The aim is simple – to “hit all the pleasure points with kai”. There’s more on the cards for 2021, as the café leans more into the bistro side of dining. Frequent live music nights will put Orbell Street on the map. New dishes are being tested for the menu. “As soon as there is demand, people can afford to innovate. These are as good, or better than the things you can have on a platter in New Zealand right now. It’s exciting to exist in that space.”

Since we opened Cellar Door in early January 2020, the single most popular thing we’ve offered is this ‘flight’ of bubbles. In the wine world, the term ‘flight’ means a set of wines to be tried together. At Cellar Door, each flight is a taste of four different wines, adding up to just over one glass. We have curated almost two dozen different flights, each demonstrating a theme – winemaking style, grape variety, region. Our ‘Let’s Get Fizzical’ flight ($16.50) explores four sparkling wines produced in three different countries to show very different styles. We start with Bird in Hand Sparkling Pinot Noir 2019 from the cooler – for Australia – region of Adelaide Hills. The fruit is harvested at night-time to protect the freshness of the fruit, and there is a very short ‘soak’ on the skins to collect the light blush pink colour. It’s fresh and delicate, and quite delightful.

Second is a centuries-old style, with local legend Greystone’s organic Pétillant Naturel. Made by bottling while fermentation is still going on, Greystone honours the tradition of natural winemaking with no additions, filtration or preservatives, and it’s a very expressive and full-flavoured wine. A slightly more traditional wine follows; Bernard Fouquet’s Aubuisieres Vouvray Brut NV from the Loire Valley in France is made the same way as Champagne, except with their indigenous grape Chenin Blanc. The style is delicate and clean with structured acidity and a very elegant finish. Our finale is Nautilus Estate’s Brut NV from Marlborough. Faithfully following the Champagne method, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are blended before being aged for over three years on lees in the bottle to give rich, toasty and biscuity characters. This is our pick for Christmas Day and for the days before and after!

’m sure you inner-city slickers, who have the time to sit in a café and read yours truly in this fine magazine, will be familiar with the newest cultural hot-spot to hit Ōtautahi. I’m sure you’ve already spread the word around your social circles at the high school fundraiser you were dreading going to but accidentally had one too many Pinot Gris at. But for those of you not in the loop, let me fill you in. There’s a cool new theatre in town, and it’s brimming with creativity, joy, and an uncrushable spirit. I’m sure you were so embarrassed you didn’t know about it. You can thank me later. Little Andromeda Theatre was a small theatre created by honestly one of Ōtautahi’s greatest advocates for the city’s live arts scene, Michael Bell. It started in a tent and then found a home in a vacant hospitality site on The Terrace/The Strip and director, tastemaker, and visionary Holly Chappell joined the team. And now it’s all grown up in its very own purpose-built theatre. It’s easily the most

financially accessible, vibrant, and exciting way to spend a night out in Christchurch. Having a ‘cool vibe’ is something almost impossible to purposefully manifest. Take it from me and my multiple attempts to try and pull off a fedora in my early teens. But one step inside the theatre at Little Andromeda and you’ve already unintentionally taken three steps up the proverbial ‘social ladder’ – and Christchurch, I know how important social capital is in our garden city. Supporting the live arts in 2020 in my eyes makes you easily one of the coolest people in school. So, if you want to ride to the mall with the cool kids, I suggest hopping on the ‘attending live theatre trend’ and booking a ticket to anything on at Little Andromeda this/next year. Yes, I am a little biased as I am putting on a Christmas show Christ! What a Night! in the lead up to the silly season. But from what I understand, it’s all basically sold out. It seems like the word about the coolest space in Christchurch is getting out there.

“I grew up in Dunedin and loved it down there. I was heavily into sport; I competed all around the world. I ended up based in Australia in 1990, and in 1994, I was in Germany trying to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, and I injured my shoulder. I was a javelin thrower. “I ended up playing rugby, played for Queensland a few games and then snapped my collarbone in 1995. So left collarbone, right shoulder. I got involved in sport administration and worked there until 2004. I was desperate to come home; I really missed New Zealand. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy Australia, there are just too many things that will kill you over there. “Many of the things I learnt along the way, I get to pass on to the kids that I coach now. As a coach, you’re always trying to find how that athlete responds best, and you’ve just gotta keep changing your hat to find it. I really get a kick from an athlete coming back, and they’ve done their best throw. And that smile and the sheer joy, that can’t be beaten.

“I came to Christchurch in 2004. Oddly enough, I was fully intending to move back to Dunedin in 2005, but then I met my wife. “When the earthquakes hit, it was the moment that probably changed my life in many ways. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I was going to take a sabbatical and just chill out until I found it. “A friend of mine said, ‘Can you run my skate and snowboard store?’ I ended up doing that for 18 months and really enjoyed it, but one day, the guy who was turning up every day to sell me a coffee had ‘for sale’ on his van. I virtually bought it on the spot. “I knew nothing about coffee, but I like challenges, and I like learning about stuff. It was a little S-cargo van. That began the path to learning about coffee; we spent a long time learning about how it works. It’s really easy to make a bad coffee, and I’ve probably made my fair share along the way, but the challenge was how to make a really good coffee.”
