irstly; thank you to each and every one of you for voting in our very first A List Awards. We were absolutely blown away by the response, and the detail and passion put into the results – it’s heartwarming to see communities come together to boost their local business with a vote or three. I cannot wait to do this all over again in 2020! Speaking of 2020, when I embarked on writing this editorial, I do admit I had a slight moment of panic. Our last issue of the year always crosses over to January. This is it – we’ve reached 2020. There is every chance you might be flicking through this issue in the roaring ’20s! Where did you see yourself in 2020? Are you surprised at where you’ve wound up? I am overwhelmed to think that my ‘Millennium Baby’ – my daughter Anissa – is twenty years old this January. Surely someone has fed Old Man Time a double shot of espresso!? We all know Ōtautahi has had a trying year – as trivial and reductive as that makes it sound, but I struggle to contain 2019 into words that fit. After seeing unprecedented heartbreak, and swift changes in front of a global audience, all the while still growing during this geographical evolution, we still continue to be a city to be proud of. I think that’s something all of us can agree on. This magazine has seen intensive growth in 2019. I’m always conscious that Avenues is a masthead that should represent all in our city, and our team is committed to displaying diversity and highlighting all that there is to love here. 2020 will see us reaching further and expanding in every sense of the word – whether it be in page numbers, profiles of local people or new folios of content and everything in-between. Our magazine is yours, and I want you to be represented. Look for profiles on communities further afield (I’m looking at you, Kaiapoi and Rolleston!) and more in the way of recipes from local talent. I hope in your neck of the woods, you’re celebrating the end of the year – whether you are gearing up for a Christmas celebration, or just revelling in time off from the daily grind. The end of the year is time for relaxation and reflection, no matter the circumstances. You’ve done well, Christchurch. Happy holidays. Thank you once again for your readership. Your overwhelmingly positive feedback really does mean so much to me, and the entire Avenues team. We’re proud, because you are.

The spirit of the season There are few things more indicative that Christmas is just around the corner than the festive changes at our city’s iconic department store, Ballantynes. An annual visit to see the unveiling of the Christmas windows has become a Christchurch tradition for families year after year, with the displays still capturing the imaginations of children and adults’ alike, thanks to a bit of Christmas magic. Deep in the heart of the store, you’ll find the Christmas Grotto; full of decorations, voluminous trees, and truly unique ornamental pieces. There’s also a spot for Santa – and a couple of his elves – providing a place for young and old to pile onto Kris Kringle’s knee for that classic photo that will find pride of place on the family mantle. On top of the usual Christmas gems at Ballantynes, don’t forget to visit Kin, the stunning new café/deli/wine bar; explore the extravagant chocolate library, florist and tea gallery – take some time to treat yourself while on the hunt for gifts. Plus, for an extra sprinkling of Christmas joy, let Bally’s add a touch of class to your chosen gifts with their beautiful, complimentary gift-wrapping service. ballantynes.co.nz

New year, new baby? Dr Sarah Wakeman discusses the best steps to take towards starting your fertility journey. In the New Year, women and couples often decide ‘this is the year for a baby – let’s make it happen’. Your first port of call is to seek information – to get an understanding of your own unique situation. Start on some folic acid, 0.8mg daily and consider your lifestyle; reduce caffeine, stop alcohol and aim for that perfect Body Mass Index.

should definitely be seeking advice after one year. Every month counts when you are getting into your late 30s. Fertility timeframe: Today we have the Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) test to estimate Ovarian Reserve. This can help predict how many eggs you are likely to obtain during an IVF cycle; also identifying early menopause. Like most tests, AMH is not perfect – you’ll need a fertility specialist to interpret the results.

Age: The biological clock is the paramount factor when having a baby. Young women without fertility problems have about a 25 per cent chance per month of having a baby naturally if they try at the right time of the month. This Other health conditions: If you have other conditions such as drops to about 12 per cent at age 37 and 5 per cent at 42. ime flies as we all know with Christmas very close now and yes it only seems that last Christmas has just been, but the decorations are with us again. For us at Whittle Knight & Boatwood Ltd we are completing our 53rd year as a real estate company and we were reminded of this when one of our property managers brought in a 1981 newspaper with the real estate section in its full glory of run-on advertisements and a multitude of company names who, unlike our company, have not stood the test of time. Reflecting on this, time also brings about change. The data that we as a company access every day to fully research each property that our clients entrust us with is far more comprehensive and accurate than ever before. As a result, we can provide our clients with a very informative and detailed appraisal of where their property sits on today’s market. We find also that many clients have been in their homes for many years and the property slowly changes around them without them being overly aware of the shifting tides. A fresh set of eyes looking at the property from the perspective of what a buyer would react to is an invaluable service for a seller wishing to achieve a top market

price – this is advice that our experienced agents can provide. Real estate over time has proved its importance by providing families with an anchor and security; as a wealth accumulator and as an investment vehicle to provide a cash flow. The great advantage of real estate over other investments is that it is tangible and managed wisely it will be adding value steadily with time. As a company, Whittle Knight & Boatwood Ltd has provided property sales, property rental, and property management services to a wide range of clients and are proud to have repeat business from many previous clients, tenants who have moved from property to property with us and previous tenants who are now purchasing properties through us. Last month, we enjoyed selling a house for delightful clients who had purchased their property from us 38 years previously. This was the third time Whittle Knight & Boatwood Ltd had the opportunity to sell this particular property. Whether you’re looking to sell a home, buy a home, or have your property managed by the safest hands, the great team at Whittle Knight & Boatwood Ltd can do it all. Phone, email or just pop in and see us and you will receive a very friendly greeting.

EARL

OGB

Winner, Best Restaurant

Winner, Best Pub

Earl has forged ahead as the winner of our Best Restaurant category. Touted as ‘your inner-city bistro’, Earl strikes the right chord with its food-centric wine bar bringing a welcoming fine casual dining lifestyle to the CBD. Earl serves as a canvas for produce-driven dishes geared towards great wine and conversation, synonymous with the flavour, energy and relaxed vibe inspired by the coastal European culture. Owners Tom and Sam present a skilful yet still unpretentious blend of cuisines and ideas – ‘doing simple things well, rather than breaking new ground’ – and that is obviously working well for them.

Taking out our Best Pub category in a clean sweep is OGB. The speakeasy-style bar is nestled right in the centre of Cathedral Square. OGB’s service is exemplary with their old-school service vibe, and a menu that is a soul food delight. OGB could be considered a network – just down the hall, you will find Parlour Cocktail Bar (through a secret bookcase, no less), Woodward’s Barber Shop & the OGB Suites. A charming outdoor courtyard overlooks the Square – head along to experience live music, and expertly crafted food and drinks. There’s a reason they’ve won; they’re the best public house offering in the city.

Runner up: 5th Street

Runner up: Pomeroy’s Pub

CORSAIR BAY Winner, Best Beach Hidden around the bend after entering Lyttleton Harbour, Corsair Bay is an age-old haunt for many a Canterbury beach-goer. Shelly, grassy, and warm water, it is easy to forget you’re in New Zealand while sun-baking on the Peninsula. Image courtesy of John Abel. Runner up: Sumner Beach

LITTLE BREWS ESPRESSO

RED EIGHT CAFÉ Winner, Best Café

Winner, Best Coffee Wow, Cantabrians are passionate about coffee! No other category came close to the number of votes for the ol’ cup of Joe. Speaking of Jo – owner Jo Little has been praised for her coffee and service thanks to a clearly satisfied clientele ready to sing her praises. Located in the BNZ Centre, Little Brews Espresso is built on supporting local – right from their roasted beans to their compostable coffee cups. For them, part of doing good business is giving back; they support causes through a tip jar, as well as regular donations to Forest and Bird and Save the Children. Sounds like our new favourite coffee destination.

According to your votes, there is a significant buzz in the air around Canterbury’s river town, Kaiapoi. Williams Street has taken on a new face with several brand-new establishments opening up along the main drag. One new addition to the hospitality scene is Red Eight Café. There’s no argument as to why this place has been nominated – with a passionate local following swearing by it. It has all the charm of a relaxed diner with an exceptionally wellstocked cabinet – with classic favourites, but also some exceptional salads, pastries and much more. We foresee more trips to Kaiapoi in the future!

BALLANTYNES Winner, Best Retail Experience Oh, the memories we all have of Bally’s. It’s December, so we know what that means… the Ballantynes Christmas Window. As children, many of us have spent what seemed like hours staring at the shop-front window of characters along Cashel Mall. Now in 2019, the Christchurch institution is getting a facelift with the likes of Pottery Barn moving in – even though there’s evolution, Ballantynes remains unashamedly committed to Canterbury and is one of the few long-standing department stores remaining in a major Kiwi city. Are we really surprised that this retail icon came out on top? Ballantynes has been servicing the people of Canterbury since 1854 and doing it in style. Runner up: Craze Kaiapoi

LUMIÈRE CINEMA Winner, Best Theatre Experience The triumphant return of Lumière to The Arts Centre gift wraps the unique occasion of what it means to go the cinema. The owners, cinephile Nick Paris and former Hollywood screenwriter Max Hoffman have more than 40 years of experience with the moving image. Located in the West Lecture building, next to the Great Hall, these two theatres – The Bernhardt and The Bardot – feature state-of-the-art technology with vintage ambiance, luxurious seating, and a focus on service. Lumière presents engaging, contemplative, and sometimes confrontational films covering all genres. Coupled with a café, a bespoke bar, and the funkiest carpet in town, Lumière is your pick for the best destination for film. Runner up: Court Theatre

CHRISTCHURCH ART GALLERY TE PUNA O WAIWHETŪ Winner, Best Gallery Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū is arguably the most important collection of art in our country and it deservedly wins Best Gallery. A catalyst for ambitious creativity in Ōtautahi, with its artist collaborations, and extending the Gallery’s influence beyond its walls. A focus on investing in the creation of new work, from inception through to potential acquisition, and representing the Gallery’s programme in a new integrated way means the gallery reflects Christchurch, now. The collection is this city’s treasury of art, a pātaka of our history, a rich armoury of images, memories and ideas. It’s part of us, and it gets more interesting over time, as works of art connect with us and each other. Runner up: CoCA

OWEN DIPPIE’S BALLERINA Winner, Best Street Art Our cityscape has slowly bloomed with colour and art, where previously only drab concrete and raw rubble resided. Clearly the jewel in the crown was Owen Dippie’s Ballerina. The work of an internationallyrecognised artist who explores the universal language of art, Owen originally created The Ballerina for an art festival in 2014 – she is artfully poised on the back of the Isaac Theatre Royal, and now somewhat hidden by the growth of new buildings around her. Overwhelmingly so, you voted for her – and so Owen, and his ballerina win Best Street Art for 2019. Runner up: Manchester Street’s elephant mural

CHRISTCHURCH FARMERS’ MARKET Winner, Best Public Event Established in 2003, the Christchurch Farmers’ Market has swiftly grown to be our largest Saturday Farmers’ Market for locals and visitors to visit. Located in the beautiful and historic grounds of Riccarton House and Bush, the market promises fresh produce, artisan baked goods, and handmade delicacies. Year round it’s proven to be a hotspot for a Saturday activity – come early winter frosts or muggy summer mornings. Make some time to wander around the ancient kahikatea forest, and take in the Māori and early European history. A visit to this market is quintessentially Cantabrian, and it’s a clear winner for Best Public Event. Runner up: Lantern Festival

EMPIRE CHICKEN Winner, Best Cheap Eats A relatively new kid on the block, as far as Christchurch’s fried chicken scene goes, Empire Chicken has well and truly made a name for itself. Beginning life in a food truck – it has now found its way into the city’s new beating heart, as part of the Riverside Market complex on Oxford Terrace. Whether it’s a burger – with a perfectly toasted bun – or just classic fried chicken, Empire has it sorted. The reason the chicken is so good comes down to a number of reasons. Firstly, the oil – it leaves the chicken crispy as anything without any grease – yet tender. Also, whatever the seasoning is that they use, it is delicious. Runner up: The Little High Eatery

MARGARET MAHY PLAYGROUND Winner, Best Family Day Out Providing everything from a multi-storey slide to a flying fox, to climbing nets and swings; and delicately shaded by the ever-present poplar trees, The Margaret Mahy playground was one of the first anchor projects completed as part of the Ōtākaro/Avon River Loop. Give it a visit – you’ll see why this unique part of our blossoming city took out this award. Runner up: Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

HOME

SITTING PRETTY WORDS Ady Shannon PHOTOS Sarah Rowland ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER Nic Curragh | Objects Ltd

A

premium site nestled on the cliffs above Moncks Bay in the seaside suburb of Redcliffs has been in the Cochrane family for two generations. John Cochrane’s parents built the first home on the site in the 1950s and moved there when he was four years old. In 2009, John and his wife Annmaree jumped at the opportunity to buy the home and envisioned a major makeover for the property. Just two years later, the earthquakes of 2011 destroyed that plan when the home was damaged beyond repair. There followed a long and protracted negotiation with their insurers; for twoand-a-half years, John and Annmaree lived on-site in a caravan. When the original home was finally demolished, they had a clean slate to build a new home perfectly suited to their lifestyle, furnishings, and tastes. John, a cabinet maker by trade, co-owns John Cochrane Furniture with Annmaree. He admits ‘to being happiest with a nail belt on and building’. The couple took over the final stages of the finishing and moved in long before the home was complete. “We were in here for nine months before the kitchen was installed but after two and a half years of living in a caravan, that was no big deal

for us,” John says, laughing. “Annmaree has been a massive help and totally hands-on with the project. She kept the site spotless and has been a constant support.” Their design brief was uncomplicated; they wanted a home with two bedrooms, adequate storage for boat and cars, maximum advantage of the panoramic views, shelter from the prevailing easterly winds, and a lap pool. A business associate recommended architectural designer Nic Curragh, director of Objects Ltd, and from the outset, it was a perfect match. John says, “We clicked straight off and it has been a fabulous association. Nic and I are both very hands-on and we have similar ideas on design and detail.” That positive association has proved to be a winning combination for all the parties involved in the project. John and Annmaree adore their home and Nic recently scooped the ADNZ Architectural Design Awards 2019 National Winner Residential New Home 150m2 – 300m2. Landscaping has been integrated into the project from the outset and the 13-metre lap pool literally anchors the home into the hillside with 10-metre poles embedded deep into rock holding the house to the 36

hill. A sweeping drive leads to the oversized swivel hinged front door that opens to an entry lobby and pool room beyond. Customdesigned powder-coated aluminium fins at the entry screen the pool and spa and filter the views and light. Vertical cedar cladding on the exterior has been stained dark to blend into the environment. Throughout the interior shades of charcoal and black in porcelain tiles, joinery and fittings contrast sharply with clean white walls. Cedar, white American Oak and walnut feature on doors, ceilings, shelving and floors. The home is constructed from two boxes on the upper level that cantilever out over the ground floor and pool area. The ground level is dedicated to garaging, utility areas, and a fully self-contained pool room where large sliders draw back on two facades to provide unobstructed access to the pool and lawn area that is protected from the wind by a huge macrocarpa hedge. Lush lawns, trimmed

greenery, and a flourishing vegetable garden are a testimony to the green-fingered skills of the owners. The 1830 square metre site extends all the way to Bay View Road below. A central stairwell just inside the entry lobby leads up to the first floor and dissects the open plan kitchen, dining area and living room from the television lounge and master suite beyond. Ceiling levels and finishes define spaces. In the kitchen and dining area, the stud is 2.7 metres. This soars to 3 metres with a hip raked ceiling over the lounge. Floor to ceiling glass on two facades accentuate the views. In the snug, cedar batons on the ceiling enhance the cosy intimacy of the space. Sliders open to a balcony at the front of the home and at the rear, another set of sliders open to an enclosed courtyard area where a timber deck extends to a paved al fresco dining area complete with inbuilt bench seats, a pizza oven and a raised potager.

The deck is flanked by the guest bedroom on one side, and the master ensuite on the other, each with glass sliding doors providing access to the area. Nic says he took cues from the Mid Century Modern – Californian style influences including the choice of materials, transparency of the structure and minimal, contemporary styling throughout. Bespoke elements and painstaking attention to detail are evident in every aspect of the design and build. Internal doors have American oak edge trim that is subtly crafted into handles, shiplap panels of dressed cedar line the stairwell wall and continue down over the entry ceiling. Gunmetal powder-coated aluminium and steel fins inside and out are intricate in their design, finish and fixing. Italian stainless-steel tapware in the kitchens, bathrooms and laundry is from the Quadro range. Supplied by SA Plumbing Supply, Quadro is the largest range of modern stainless-steel tapware in the country, and styles range from traditional through to contemporary, architecturally formatted collections. John and Annmaree chose a

traditional style that appealed for its simple lines and high quality. Décor includes many items made, sourced or sold by John Cochrane Furniture including the KXN kitchen and customised wall unit in the television lounge, designed and manufactured in New Zealand by IMO. John says, “It is part of our range. I liken it to Meccano. It all arrives in boxes and we assembled and installed it.” Lights over the island bench were custom made as well as the angled book reading shelf and chunky walnut free-hanging shelf below. The home is future-proofed with a fully customised and integrated lift – when the doors are open it is a portal from the kitchen to the guest suite. Nic says winning the ADNZ award is a bonus but his greatest satisfaction comes from the joy the owners have in the home. “We are over the moon. We will always consider this our family home. It is our happy place. We love it to bits. There is a piece of Nic in every home he designs; here it is in the floating stairs and fins that he had made, machined and installed himself. When you engage an architect, you need to trust them. We trusted Nic and this is a great result,” John says.

HERITAGE

A summertime picnic Christchurch is quite possibly the perfect picnic city. We have leafy parks and sandy beaches, places to ramble and places to loll about, warm summer days and long evenings, gently urging us to pack a hamper and go outdoors. It seems we’ve always loved a good picnic. During the late 19th century local newspapers regularly reported community excursions. The Lyttelton Times, 28 February 1898, says that 150 children from Fernside School went to Lyttelton for their annual picnic; Islington freezing workers, “their wives and friends” (1600 people in all) took the train to Ashburton; the building trades held their picnic at New Brighton travelling in four tramcars “loaded inside and out”; and the Sydenham Brass Band performed for the Aulsebrook company picnic at Kaiapoi. This summer we’re reliving the spirit of picnics past. Your repast could be simple sandwiches and billy tea; or a feast of salads, fresh bread, dukkah, hummus, pickles and a sweet such as Turkish delight; or a spread of cold meats, cheeses, leafy greens and a raised game pie washed down with a cold sparkling beverage. Christchurch has dozens of suitable heritage destinations. Here are a few…

IN THE GROUNDS OF A STATELY MANOR

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE MOA

In the west, there’s Mona Vale, but the east has Avebury House. Earlier this year, the Victorian homestead, in the suburb of Richmond, was recognised by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga as a category two historic place, and is partially open for public viewing each day. Avebury House also hosts regular community groups, events and activities. The surrounding park is perfect for a picnic. To get there car-free, you could take a pleasant bike ride through the red zone.

In the late 14th century, a community thrived at Te Rae Kura, Redcliffs, with clearlydesignated areas for different activities such as food preparation, cooking, and making tools. Monck’s Cave and Moa Bone Point Cave also provided shelter. Driving the road to Sumner means it can be hard to appreciate the deep significance of this history. Pause on Beachville Road, or picnic at Barnett Park. To make it a bigger adventure, bike or walk Te Ara Ihutai, the Christchurch Coastal Pathway.

PICNIC WITH THE QUARRYMEN

VIEW THE HISTORIC HARBOUR

Halswell quarry was the source of bluestone for many of the city’s old heritage buildings. The city council bought the operation in 1925 and worked all the useable rock, exhausting supply in 1990. By then, Halswell was the longest continuously running quarry in Australasia. Now nature is resurgent. There are nine picnic areas and numerous walks, as well as an off-leash dog exercise area. The old quarryman’s stone house is also listed by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga as a category two historic place.

Lyttelton’s Timeball is one of only five in the world known to still be operational. The ball drops at 1pm every day, as it first did in 1876 so ship’s navigators could check the accuracy of their marine time-pieces. Choose a still day, and take your loved one up there for late afternoon strawberries and champagne. Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga reinstated the severely quake damaged tower, with the aid of a generous community grant. Psst – there’s no bathroom on site!

IN GOOD COMPANY

The art of gifting

E

twice what you envisaged, doesn’t mean the gift will reflect how you feel in that current moment.” This makes Providore’s approach a refreshing take on the art of gifting. Providore has grown in recent years, meaning they can offer more from further afield with a point of difference. They aim to use Kiwi-made and Cantabrian made products wherever possible because they believe in supporting local business. A notable client’s investment in gifting from Providore meant Lauren and the team developed a custom client-themed board game, based on Monopoly. Lauren sees these kinds of bespoke, quirky touches garnering a genuine response from the point of difference. The new range at Providore has proven to be a considerable success, driven by a change in trend, gifting tangible items as opposed to food. Providore is there for the pinnacle moments in people’s lives; there’s an impactful, emotionally driven reason behind every gift they send out. “Every encounter we have has a story, and we go on a journey with our clients, whether it’s a one-off gift for a friend or a regular package for a top tier client”. It’s simply put – out of the box considerations, delivered in a box. Lauren urges interested customers to step beyond the website – picking up the phone, or sending an email to Lauren directly will mean you’re one step closer to offering gifts that are unequivocally reflective of your connection with someone special. “People want lasting, tangible gifts, that will create lasting, tangible memories. We aim for recipients to feel humbled by their gifts, to almost be ‘taken aback’ by the thought behind the gift. “Our mission is simple. It’s to make people happy.”

xperience really does help when you are tasked to come up with the perfect gift. It’s a struggle for many – what to get for the boss, those closest to you, or even that neighbour who feeds your cat while you’re on holiday? Fortunately, local company Providore has led the way in the art of gifting for over ten years, thanks to an ability to foster relationships and through getting to know clients intimately when building bespoke gifts. Providore is a name you may be familiar with. The small, family-owned company has recently reached an exciting turning point, with a raft of new and fresh ideas. Lauren Colgan, the sales and marketing manager describes it as ‘a whole new phase – a new look for us, with new offerings, and an exciting approach for the end of year gifting craze, 2020 and beyond’. Providore has ushered in a new age of gift hampers. Gone are the days where a company-labelled bottle of red, a few jars of relish and crackers were an acceptable offering. The new era of gifts is personal and thoughtful – they’re tailor-made. Along with curating high-quality gifts, Lauren works personally with Providore clients to remove the stress and hassle of gifting at the end of the year. As you can imagine, you can easily go overboard, and quite often in the wrong way. “Some clients click instantly with the range, others will build their own gift boxes – either way it’s a journey we go on with them. We sit down, spend time together, and get to know each other. We talk about what the client wants to achieve in that moment when someone opens their gift – what is the impact you want to have?” Traditional hamper gifts don’t necessarily reflect how grateful or appreciative you are – you want to make someone’s day when they open it. And just because you spend 45

Harmony from the heart WORDS Kim Newth PHOTO Sarah Rowlands

rawn together by a love of a capella singing in 2011, The Vocal Network is a Christchurch barbershop quartet whose sweet soulful sound is pure championship gold. On a warm Sunday evening in New Brighton, I catch up with the group’s talented singers as they gather to rehearse their latest repertoire. In September, against tough competition, they won the coveted 2019 Barbershop Quartet National Champion trophy, taking out the top prize for the third time (having also done so in 2013 and 2016). They say it was their performance of ‘Birth of the Blues’ that really nailed it for them this time. “We’d tried this arrangement a few years ago; it was beyond us at that stage, but we’ve matured since then,” lead singer Ed Dempsey explains, who first discovered barbershop harmony as a school student in Ontario, Canada. “We decided to bring it back and this time it clicked. It’s a challenging piece but very rewarding.” As a group, the four have connections going back many years. Ed and tenor singer David Merriman have been singing together in quartets since the 1990s and are also members of Christchurch ‘pops’ choir The Vocal Collective, (which toured the USA this year, delivering a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall). The Vocal Network’s other two members, Andrew Grieve (bass) and Aaron Chandler (baritone), grew up singing in the same school choirs and share memories of singing in the first-ever barbershop quartet at Shirley Boys’ High School. Together, these four have developed a unique harmony, not just in song but also in purpose. “Every year we get our heads together and think about what we want to achieve,” Aaron explains – also an accomplished trombone player, arranger, pianist and all-round musician. 47

“It’s not all about competition; we have so much fun as well. We’ve performed at Coca‑Cola Christmas in the Park and numerous other shows and gigs.” On one memorable occasion, they were asked to sing some a capella arrangements of Ed Sheeran songs for a radio station. “We ended up singing with Ed Sheeran that day!” Andrew says. He also recalls how the quartet was also once invited to sing at an exclusive venue to set the scene on an extravagant marriage proposal. Valentine’s Day is always busy for the quartet with their romance-themed singing telegram service in big demand. As well, they are sought-after as performers for corporate functions, birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. “We got a call one year to sing for a man having cancer treatment,” Aaron says. “His work colleagues wanted to do something special for his birthday. That was awesome: all the nurses came to his room to hear us sing for him – it was really powerful.” In November, they hosted an evening called Voices in the Community to showcase Christchurch’s breadth of vocal talent. While not strictly competition-focussed, the quartet nevertheless aspires to reach international competition standard. They have sought out vocal coaching from the country’s best and next year’s goal is to attend a summer school in barbershop harmony in Nashville, USA. In turn, they continue to share their passion for a capella singing with others; Andrew is currently coaching a local high school quartet and observes that New Zealand has the biggest high school harmony championship of anywhere in the world, (Young Singers in Harmony). “It’s a truly unique event!”

Wanaka takes flight

I

t’s world-famous for a very good reason. Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow combines the very best of a country airshow with some of the best flying you’ll see in the world, the latest aviation technology and products, education and pyrotechnics along with great food and entertainment. The epitome of a ‘big day out’ – gates open at 7.30am with many visitors taking the opportunity to arrive early so they can see everything on the ground before the non-stop flying displays start at 10am and continue till 4pm. Most aviation fans buy a three-day pass taking in practise day on Friday and the Airshow days on Saturday and Sunday. On the Monday, Rides Day gives visitors the chance to fly in anything from a Spitfire to a Tiger Moth. The event was first staged in 1988 when local entrepreneur Sir Tim Wallis decided to have an Airshow to show off his growing collection of Warbird aircraft. The Airshow has been held every second Easter since, with a Community Trust taking over management in 2006. For 2020, Airshow organisers have put together an impressive line-up of display aircraft. The WWII fighter aircraft will be headed up by at least two Spitfires, a brace of P-51 Mustangs, two Yak-3s and a couple of aircraft still to be announced. On the flightline will be a WWII P-40 Kittyhawk fitted with six .50 calibre machine guns. Wanaka is the only Airshow in the world where you will see a P-40 firing her guns. Others in the programme include the only Avro Anson Mk1 in the world, the Grumman Avenger, two Trojan aircraft in the first ever Trojan pairs display in New Zealand and the beautiful Catalina Flying Boat. The Roaring 40s Harvard display team has performed at Wanaka since the very first Airshow and is putting together a six-ship

team for Wanaka 2020. Meanwhile, the dynamic Yak-52 team may be expanded to an 11-ship display. Performing Solo aerobatics will be Auckland-based Doug Brooker in his new MXS aerobatic aircraft recently imported from the United States. Jet Racing will return, with the first held in 2014. It proved a huge hit with the crowd and for 2020 the iconic 1950s Vampires will take on the powerful L-39s chasing each other around a six-kilometre course, marked by huge inflatable pylons. The pilots include two Americans – former Reno Air Races Jet Class Champion, Rick Vandam and former Thunderbirds display pilot, Paul ‘Sticky’ Strickland. The Classic Aircraft Flypast at lunchtime is another popular display. In 2020 it will feature the return to flying of the DH-90 Dragonfly, one of only two airworthy examples left in the world. Others include the DH-89 Dominie, Tiger Moths, Fox Moth, Beech-18, Chipmunk, Staggerwing and Waco. The Royal New Zealand Air Force has been at every Wanaka Airshow and will be back with a line-up of aircraft including the mighty Hercules and the Black Falcon aerobatic display team. The RNZAF will be promoting its School to Skies programme aimed at getting more young women to sign up to an air force career. Regional air forces attending are regulars Australia, the United States and France. In 2018 the Americans wowed the crowd with the F-16 fighter jet display team. More of the same is expected for 2020. And it’s not all about noise and speed – one of the most enduring acts at Wanaka is Doug Hamilton’s graceful glider display set to classical music. Check out the numerous ground displays and entertainment while enjoying some fantastic food and beverages over the day.

BY THE BOOK

A trust transformation

I Jeremy Johnson, Partner, Wynn Williams 027 418 1654 wynnwilliams.co.nz

t is often said that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of trusts per capita – the government estimates there are somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000 trusts operating in New Zealand. 2019 brings a long-anticipated change to the law of trusts in the form of the Trusts Act 2019. While much of the Act updates or restates the current law, there have been some significant changes. Importantly, the days of establishing a trust and then forgetting about it are over. For example, the Act introduces a presumption that basic information about the trust is made available to beneficiaries periodically. It also creates new obligations regarding trust records. Currently, it is common for trust documentation to be incomplete, with important documents

52

being lost and trustees’ decisions not being recorded – this creates issues when disputes arise. The Act compels a new level of rigour, including requiring each trustee to keep copies of the trust deed and any variations. The Act also clarifies what it means to be a trustee. If you are a trustee, even of a simple family trust, these changes are relevant to you. The Act creates mandatory obligations that must be complied with, including that trustees know the terms of the trust deed and act in accordance with it. Time to dig out that trust deed and have a look! What’s the takeaway? The changes will increase the cost to establish and administer a trust. Rather than simply establishing a trust as a matter of course, you should carefully consider whether a trust structure will actually meet your needs.

Summer bliss

T Emily Hastie, Landscape Architect, Kamo Marsh Landscape Architects PHOTOS Mick Stephenson

he quintessential New Zealand summer holiday consists of a sweet and salty combination of the scorching sun, pounding surf, deep, refreshing river swims and long, balmy evenings spent around the campfire. For most of us, the summer break is much too short, and we spend the majority of the warmer months rushing back from work to savour the lingering daylight. It’s for this reason that many gardens come equipped with swimming pools, braziers, and hammocks hung in the branches; elements that echo the Kiwi summer at home. Nowhere is this more evident than houses located at the beach or at family baches. When working with coastal homes, the challenge for a landscape architect is to create outdoor spaces which will complement the surrounding landscape plus cater for outdoor activities, as well as cope with the extremes of climate and conditions that go hand-in-hand with our unpredictable weather. On a recent project, I worked with a family who are firm locals, regular beachgoers, and surf enthusiasts – and this love of the outdoors, plus a desire to entertain groups of all ages, informed the design of the garden and outdoor living. The brief was to create a space that would reflect the surrounding landscape, work with their lifestyle, and cater to their water-loving friends and visitors.

54

The practicalities of beachfront living dictated a functional approach, and so we included an outdoor shower, large washdown area for surfboards, and direct beach access via gates. The coastal New Zealand planting scheme includes species happy to live with sandy soil, salty air and a brisk sea breeze, complemented by hard-wearing materials like concrete and timber that is well suited to the harsh conditions. The entertaining areas are positioned at the sheltered rear of the home. They include paved seating areas and a custom-designed bench and gas fire which contains barbecue and outdoor fridge. An in-ground heated pool and spa pool complete the playground which has become a much-loved retreat for the family to enjoy an idyllic holiday lifestyle for a large portion of the year. The secret to a coastal garden space that works is to take inspiration from the area and the impact of seasonal elements. Include natural materials such as timber, stones, shells and concrete which will blend with the environment as well as survive its onslaught. Choose to include elements that will bring people together and create a space where the family gathers to relax, prolonging that blissful holiday feeling as long as you can.

Embracing green cuisine

ew Zealand’s South Island is worldrenowned for its prime beef and lamb yield but there’s a local haunt turning the tides on Queenstown’s cuisine scene. Nestled down a quaint brick-laid path, No5 Church Lane is set to debut a new menu accenting the region’s fine harvests and seasonal fruit and vegetable produce. Head Chef Trent Watson leads the charge, pioneering a refreshed menu that takes inspiration from Northern Italian and Mediterranean style cuisine offering patrons a delightful Kiwi twist in the tourism capital. Southern fried banana blossoms, beetroot falafels and a hearty veggie medley served up Hāngi style are set to eclipse the rest,

catering to the vegans and gluten intolerant diners alike. Or try the homemade olive pappardelle with its slow roasted heritage tomatoes and creamy goat cheese, the perfect accompaniment to polenta beignets, with vegetable succotash and pecorino. Each dish is perfectly portioned for sharing (not that you’ll want to). Kick back in the cosy atmosphere with a glass (or two!) from a carefully selected and proudly parochial wine list – because life’s about balance, right? No5 Church Lane is open from 7.30am until late with dishes priced from $12 and a sharing menu priced at $60 per person.

Old-fashioned ginger cake WITH CARAMEL NUT TOPPING

For the cake 150g butter 150g brown sugar 300g golden syrup 100g molasses or treacle 1 cup whole milk 2 free range eggs, beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract a thumb nail size piece of fresh ginger, finely grated 300g plain flour 2 tsp ginger 1 tsp cinnamon pinch of ground cloves

a couple of grinds of cracked pepper 2 tsp baking soda good pinch of salt For the caramel 400g caster sugar 190g butter, cubed 1 cup cream 1/2 tsp salt To garnish 1 cup mixed nuts of your choice, toasted (I use almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, and pecans) a couple of sprigs of rosemary

Anna Worthington cakesbyanna.co.nz “One of my favourite aspects of being a cake maker is being able to experiment with ingredients and come up with unexpected cake flavours for my customers. There are however, old favourites that will always feature on my menu. This ginger cake is one of my favourite things to eat. During the year, I offer it as a simple loaf, to have with butter, or some creamy blue cheese. This Christmas, I’ve jazzed it up to make for a pretty sexy centrepiece on your Christmas table. The caramel can be made up to a week in advance, the cake can be baked up to three days in advance, and you can throw it all together on the day. Easy.” Like the look of this cake? Anna is offering this, along with two others on her Christmas menu.

MAKES 1 X 8” BUNDT CAKE, OR 2 LOAVES Preheat oven to 160°C. Grease your bundt tin really well, or if making loaves, line the tins with baking paper. Melt the butter, sugar. golden syrup and treacle over a medium heat. Leave to cool before transferring to a large mixing bowl. Add the milk, eggs, vanilla and fresh ginger and mix well. In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients and sieve into the wet mixture. Mix well. Once you have a smooth batter, pour into the bundt or loaf tins. The bundt will take around 45 minutes to bake, and the gingerbread around 30 minutes. Cooking times depend on your oven, so check with a skewer (it should come out clean). I like my gingerbread nice and dark, a slight bitterness adds another flavour note to this cake. Leave the cake to cool. Toast your nuts in the oven for 10 minutes or so and leave to cool.

To make the caramel, melt the sugar in a saucepan over a low heat. Avoid stirring – I tend to shake the saucepan around to avoid the sugar sticking and burning. Once the sugar has turned a light amber colour, remove from the heat and stir in the butter. Once combined, return to the heat and add the cream. Watch out – it spits! Once all combined and glossy, add the salt. If you have any lumps, strain the caramel through a sieve. Leave to cool for half an hour. This recipe gives you more caramel than you need for this cake, but no one ever complained about a jar of leftover caramel in the fridge. Toss the toasted nuts in a couple of tablespoons of caramel so they are nice and sticky. Drizzle the top of the bundt cake with caramel and leave to set for 5 minutes. Arrange the nuts on the cake, they should stick together nicely, so you can pile them up. You can also place some around the base of the cake. Drizzle more caramel over the cake, and garnish with some little sprigs of rosemary.

20,000 LEGUAS SKIN CONTACT ORANGE WINE 2018 New to the whole Orange Wine scene? It’s a style of wine that’s taken off around the world, especially in the trendy restaurant and bar trade. Let’s bring you up to speed with a few pointers. Orange wine is not made with oranges, nor is it a Mimosa – it’s white wine fermented with skins and seeds in contact with the juice. The fermentation can take anything from four days to a year. It is an estate grown wine made entirely from Chardonnay, and certified organic, from the La Mancha region of Spain. Pale orange in colour, you might pick up a whole host of different flavours going on here like hazelnut, tropical fruits, and orange rind. Try this with spicy curries, sushi and a wide range of cheeses. thegoodwine.co.nz

Pohutukawa Pantry, in Waltham, is an artisan bakery creating yummy, handcrafted goodies. At present, you’ll find a range of traditional Christmas fruit cakes, along with steamed puddings, Christmas fruit mince tarts, scrumptious truffles and even some shortbread in the mix. The Christmas tarts contain a generous portion of spiced rich fruit filling, with a touch of ginger; which also happens to be a family recipe passed down through the generations. This decadent filling is blended and soaked in Kaiapoi Distillery’s crafted brandy over a six-month period to produce the most complex and intense flavour, then encased in buttery shortcrust pastry. Just between us – you could pass them off as your own. What?! We didn’t say anything.

Often the wheat-intolerant amongst us have to forgo seasonal delicacies such as Christmas tarts. Well, not anymore, thanks to the Totally Gluten Free Bakery. While baking in several different bakeries, proprietor Wendy established that there was a growing need for an exclusive gluten-free bakery here in Christchurch. The bakery was established in 2006 and has grown and expanded ever since. None of the products have any of the tell-tale flavours or textures often associated with bad gluten-free baking. On the menu is two types of tarts: an apricot and a berry tart – the latter having a warm Christmas spice undertone. At a reasonable $8.50 for a half dozen, you’re not breaking the bank for a sweet treat that fits your dietary requirements.

If you haven’t been to Copenhagen Bakery, or at least heard of it – what are you doing with your life?! Donna and John have been baking up a storm in our city for well over thirty years, and their award-heavy walls proudly show that they’re here to stay. Their sweet pastry fruit pie has won awards at the National NZ Supreme Pie Competition (yes, that’s a thing) and as you can imagine – it’s well deserved. The Christmas mince pies here are an example of a mince pie done right. No ifs, buts or maybes. A classic approach to a seasonal favourite. Speaking of (and straying from our topic somewhat) Copenhagen Bakery also offers Panettone, but only for the Christmas period. You know what that means… stock up!

ANGEL DELIVERY

Our second feature on Bohemian in recent months – they took out top marks in our pie reviews from August. Amongst other things, they tend to do a delicious pastry encased treat. The mince in this tart was fresh with a citrus pep and is finished off with a whimsical pastry cut out of an angel or star, and you’ve got another contender for the ‘pass it off as your own’ tart. If anything, you’ve got to visit Bohemian in Sumner or St Asaph (in the SALT district, near Little High) for their delicious pastries and brunch menu. The coffee is top notch also. Their tarts are available in a cute take home pack, so you can stock up for the festive days ahead.

Now, we would be remiss to review Christmas tarts without adding in a modern interpretation of a classic. For those of you not big on the Christmas mince, we present to you: Grizzly Baked Goods. Hot off the press (or should that be oven tray?) from their newest location at The Welder, Grizzly has created a Christmas Morning Bun – their interpretation of the classic Christmas pastry. A mini mountain of flaky croissant pastry corralled with a smattering of boozy fruit and lots of nuts and spices. They’ll be rolling them out from early December, so you’re just in time to test out a festive alternative with your first flat white of the holiday season. Go well.

We’re on the verge of a new decade, so we undoubtedly need to represent online delivery options when it comes to Christmas food. Rebecca Cass’s Angel Delivery is a Kiwi company offering beautiful care packages of freshly made food, for every occasion. From the award-winning kitchen of Wellington’s Arobake Cafe, these Christmas mince pies are a delightful festive treat. They’re made with fresh homemade pastry, and a rich fruit filling packed with sugar and spice. There’s ten to twelve tarts in a beautifully packaged custom Christmas box, which you can add to one of Angel Delivery’s hampers. Well done! You’ve just taken the stress out of gifting this season. Perfect.

Sometimes it's good to be bad It’s healthy to indulge once in a while. Complete your meal with a Valrhona chocolate decadence paired with marinated strawberries, cinder toffee and an angelic mint gel.

HUMANS OF ŌTAUTAHI

Erica EDGEWARE

“My biggest influence in life is obviously my parents. They were both engineers, and mum was a lecturer at the university – structural engineering. I grew up in an environment where learning was, and still is, a core value in the household. Math and physics were also popular topics in the house. Because mum is a lecturer, she always told me that it was better to come home and finish your homework, so then you have the rest of your time to play. I’ve always taken that to heart; get the things done that are necessary, and then use the rest of your time to learn, and play and embrace life. “My background is in architecture. I graduated at 22 years old, and the timing was awesome for me to jump into an opportunity that nowhere else in the world has – which was to create a city from the ground up. Knowing that 80 per cent of the city centre alone had been destroyed, meant a tragedy

was also an opportunity. I think being able to be involved in community and see things evolving is a privilege. Yes, it’s been very hard over the last few years, and I’ve chosen not to be a conventional architect, but through my architectural studies and using my architectural and design skills, I’m able to really help communities be confident with their voice and creating this whole idea of an ‘active citizenship’. “I always like to say there is no work-life balance – it’s all life. I’ve gotten to a point where if I’m doing things I’m passionate about, and with a balance of looking after myself and also being able to connect regularly with my friends and family, I’m able to embrace it all as life in general, rather than splitting it up. “If people are at that stage and are fortunate enough to be doing things they love, then that just becomes part of life.”
