Qestral Activities... out of the ordinary

New Generation Lifestyle Villages...

Qestral residents recently enjoyed two “out-of-theordinary” adventures — a visit to the New Zealand Raptor Experience in Timaru and a stay at Maruia Hot Springs that included claybird shooting.

The group typically provides residents with engaging experiences, a vision recognised by the Eldercare Innovation Award at the 2025 World Ageing Festival in Singapore — for its TRILife activities programme.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Time flies

The last issue of the year always sneaks up on me. Time really does fly when you’re having fun.

And what a fun time it is – summer! That golden season when everything feels a little lighter, brighter, and more possible. No matter the challenges of the year gone by, summer invites us to slow down, reconnect with family and friends, and enjoy the simple pleasures in our own way.

In Ōtautahi, the heat always brings the city to life. Festivals like Nostalgia and the Great Kiwi Beer Festival return, buskers reclaim the streets, and Hagley Park once again becomes the elegant stage for Urban Polo.

And fun – we’ve had plenty. We’ve watched our city continue to grow and evolve, with new restaurants, bars, cafés, and hidden gems popping up across town. The events calendar has been bursting, with the Christchurch Spring Festival a true highlight.

We all know how good this city is – and now it’s time to celebrate it. The A List returns for another year, shining a light on the very best of Christchurch, as voted by you. Keep an eye on our social media for your chance to have your say – where have you loved going in 2025?

Beyond creating a magazine we’re proud of each month, the greatest joy of Avenues is being out in the community – meeting you, discovering new stories, and experiencing all the things that make this city such a special place to live.

So go well this summer, Ōtautahi. Enjoy every sunny moment. We’ll see you in 2026 – a year already shaping up to be an exciting one for us all.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a bright, happy New Year,

NAH

CHRIS BRUERTON’S FAREWELL CONCERT

From the world’s greatest stages, Chris Bruerton will return home to Christchurch for a special farewell performance as a member of The King’s Singers.

Chris’s stellar career began as a chorister in the Christ Church Cathedral Choir. He later moved to England to become a professional singer, and in 2012 became the first non-Brit selected for the internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble. The King’s Singers have been considered the gold standard in a cappella singing for decades. The sixman group is famous for brilliant versatility across various musical styles, flawless harmonies, and trademark wit.

Chris says he’s loved every moment as a King’s Singer.

“For more than twelve years, I’ve travelled the world to sing in places I once only dreamed of. I’ve sung more than 1300 concerts from New York to Sydney, Beijing to London, and everywhere in between … but I’m really looking forward to singing in the Christchurch Town Hall, where I’ve performed dozens of times in the past, but never with these amazing guys.”

The baritone’s departure from the group literally signals a new stage, pursuing a new business opportunity and spending more time in England with wife Liz.

Since teaching music at Burnside High School, Chris has supported new musicians exploring their potential.

“I get the biggest buzz from helping aspiring musicians work towards their dreams, so I enjoy the education work our group does across the world as we travel,” he says.

“The thing I’m particularly excited about when I come home to sing is being surrounded by the people who made me who I am today. Family, friends, and former colleagues will be in the audience – and maybe even a youngster who will think, as I once did, ‘that’s what I want to do.’”

DAD SONG

Ōtautahi’s own Jed Parsons has released a folksy new single, I Might Go Swimming This silky-toned singer has captured a poetically detailed vision of parenthood. “The lyrics came to me at a time of realisation that my children were growing up and quickly becoming independent, and my role as a protector would slowly diminish over time,” Jed told 13th Floor

BOURDAIN’S WORD

DERRY ME

You might have spotted red balloons floating from stormwater grates and park benches this Halloween. Far from a prank, it was a clever campaign by streaming platform Neon promoting the new series IT: Welcome To Derry. Set in 1962, it follows a couple and their son who move to Derry, Maine just as a young boy vanishes.

A LONG FIGHT

Robert Sarkies’ (Scarfies) direction returns to screens with Pike River. This film, starring Melanie Lynskey and Robyn Malcolm, follows the subsequent, years-long battle for justice led by Anna Osborne and Sonya Rockhouse, two friends whose respective husband and son – along with 27 other workers – were killed in the West Coast mining disaster. It’s a poignant reminder of the ongoing pursuit for accountability.

THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR

Top Dog Theatre brings summer Shakespeare back to Mona Vale for the holiday season.

This year, Top Dog Theatre is performing William Shakespeare’s comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor.

As plots go, it’s a classic. The two merry wives – Meg and Alice – each receive a letter from the portly Sir John Falstaff professing his love (and lust) for them both. Comparing their sultry snail mail and discovering the letters are word-for-word identical, they plot revenge on Falstaff for his audacious and boorish attempt to win their affection – and more. Aided by a pair of schemers, Mistress Quickly and the Hostess of the Garter Inn, their plan sets off a chain of comic misadventures. Will Falstaff learn his lesson in the end?

The production is once again helmed by Derek Doddington, who has been delivering accessible Shakespeare to Christchurch audiences for decades.

“It’s one of Shakespeare’s funniest plays. We’ve incorporated a good amount of

slapstick into it. We’re looking forward to giving everyone a chance to have a laugh,” says Derek.

Held on the Mound Lawn at Mona Vale, access is easy, with nearby public transport and cycling links, as well as on-site parking (which will be patrolled).

Picnics are encouraged, and refreshments will also be available for purchase on the night. The two-hour open-air performances of The Merry Wives of Windsor will run from 6–14 February 2026, with tickets priced at $20 for adults and $15 for children.

Derek mentions that he hopes this latest performance keeps theatre accessible to all, with prices allowing for whole families to experience quality theatre.

“You can bring the whole family for a break from the screens and take in one of the all-time classics. A family of four can attend for $70. And, most importantly, have a really great night out.”

DISTINCTLY AVENUES

Distinct Studio’s creative team knows how to turn ideas into stories that move people. Recently, the Avenues team partnered with them to produce a new hero video – one that captures the spirit of Christchurch and celebrates the people and places that make the city shine.

Distinct Studio blends business strategy with creative execution and full in-house production. The result is content that not only looks beautiful but also performs, telling authentic stories. The studio team specialises in contentfirst websites, brand storytelling, and organic social media that connect with real audiences.

The Avenues project began with a clear goal: to highlight the magazine’s clients, community, and connections. “We’re all about storytelling,” says creative director Thomas Nye. “It’s about engaging people and treating your customers as the hero of your story.” Its moniker was, ‘Within Avenues, the stories of Ōtautahi are written’.

Filmed across Christchurch at key hospitality, retail, and commercial locations,

the video showcases familiar faces and vibrant spaces. Avenues editor Liam Stretch and food editor Sophie Petersen even stepped in front of the camera, joining clients for a day of storytelling and creative energy – from bakeries to architecture studios, bars to shopping centres.

The concept was simple but meaningful – to tell the stories of the people who bring Ōtautahi to life. From bustling cafés to creative studios, each scene celebrates the passion and craftsmanship within the city’s avenues.

“Strategy always comes first,” Thomas explains. “We start by asking what a client wants to achieve, then plan the microstories that bring that vision to life.” One such story features Bellbird Bakery, where the team’s signature flair is captured in dynamic motion.

The result is a visual love letter to Christchurch, showing what Avenues is all about. The magazine the city lives by. The video is now live on Avenues’ digital channels.

THE BUSKERS ARE BACK

Get amongst the fun this summer as the World Buskers Festival returns to Ōtautahi Christchurch for ten days of street performance, ticketed shows, and pop-up surprises. From Friday 23 January to

Sunday 1 February 2026, the streets come alive with laughter, spectacle, and the kind of unexpected moments that make this one of our most-loved festivals.

Among the headline acts is Cirque Bon Bon, which promises a dazzling mix of athleticism, artistry, and humour in a cabaret-circus experience that’s as glamorous as it is daring. This high-energy production transforms the stage into a world of glittering acrobatics, dance, comedy, and sass – a feast for the senses and one of the hottest tickets of the festival.

Adding to the stellar show lineup, The Bitches’ Box brings its hit rural comedy to the stage. Created by Amelia Dunbar and Emma Newborn, this Kiwi favourite is a sharp-witted celebration of life on the land told through the eyes of two working dogs with plenty to say.

For those who like their nights a little later, the Late Night Cabaret joins the line up, unapologetic, unscripted, and uncensored. Expect world-class circus, buskers burlesque, and a lineup that pushes every boundary.

This year’s international buskers include Mario Queen of the Circus (USA) – the Latin lothario of circus and comedy whose killer Queen anthems, slick juggling, and rock’n’roll swagger have wowed audiences in over 26 countries. From Canada, the dazzling aerial duo The Silver Starlets bring vintage circus glamour and cheeky comedy to the skies, while Japan’s to R mansion deliver a whirlwind of mime, dance, and magic – a

spectacular world of flying chairs, dancing umbrellas, and pure imagination.

Don’t miss Busker Jams, the nightly variety show where performers cut loose and take audiences on a wild, one-of-a-kind ride. Bring your mates, grab a drink, and settle in for big festival energy.

Another highlight is The World Buskers Festival Gala, a spectacular showcase at the iconic Isaac Theatre Royal. Featuring top international and local acts performing back-to-back before more than 1,200 fans, it’s high-energy, unpredictable, and the ultimate celebration of Buskers at their best.

The festival grows this year with the addition of the Rollickin Gelato on Cashel pitch, adding a burst of colour and energy to the city. Created in partnership with Rollickin Gelato, it brings an extra scoop of fun to the streets while celebrating the opening of their new Riccarton store.

Across five city pitches and two pop-up locations, the festival blends the best of international street talent with the creativity and spirit of homegrown performers. Expect jaw-dropping acrobatics, cheeky comedy,

world-class circus acts, and unforgettable moments in every corner of the city.

Keep an eye out for urban pop-up pitches, with surprise performances of dance, circus, and comedy in unexpected city spots. More updates are expected, so keep an eye out to find out what’s popping up where.

This year also features Pae Tākaro: Eight Days of Play, a collaboration with Gap Filler exploring the art of play. From Directors and Storytellers to Collectors and Jokers, there’s something for every play personality – inviting everyone to rediscover creativity, curiosity, and joy in the heart of the city.

Whether you’re a long-time fan or a firsttime visitor, the World Buskers Festival is the perfect excuse to gather your crew, hit the streets, and experience Christchurch at its most playful. Grab a ticketed show, catch a few acts between coffee stops, or settle in at an outdoor pitch and join the fun.

Plan your summer around ten days of joy, play, and fun. Follow for announcements, schedules, and sneak peeks – and visit the World Buskers Festival website to get your tickets. worldbuskersfestival.co.nz

ICONIC FESTIVALS RETURN

Summer’s on its way, and it’s time to dance and indulge in some Kiwi fare in the sun.

Two of Canterbury’s most anticipated summer events are back – Nostalgia Festival and the Great Kiwi Beer Festival, promising a season of great music, local food and drink, and a community coming together.

Held at Ferrymead Heritage Park on Saturday 7 February 2026, Nostalgia Festival once again invites festivalgoers to step into a world where vintage charm meets modern music. The key to this family-friendly event is its heritage setting– tramlines, cobbled streets, and timeless character transport visitors to another era. Some of the makers and creators that work in the park will also be resident in some of the vintage buildings and shops. Director Callam Mitchell says, “It’s where the festival began, and its unique setting is what makes the experience so special. There’s nowhere else that blends vintage charm with modern music and culture quite like it.”

This year, Nostalgia introduces an exciting new addition – the Future Nostalgia Stage, designed to give youth bands a platform to showcase their talent. “There’s a lack of opportunities for youth artists in the city,” Callam says. “We hope this becomes a regular feature and something for local bands to aspire to perform at.”

Nostalgia’s 2026 line-up is one its strongest yet, headlined by Balu Brigada, returning home after more than a year of international touring, which included supporting Twenty One Pilots and selling out shows across the US and Europe. The Auckland-based alt-pop duo are joined by Kiwi icons Ladyhawke, Troy Kingi, Tami Neilson, Hollie Smith, and Harper Finn, promising an unforgettable Waitangi Weekend celebration.

The boutique, family-friendly festival features four stages across the historic park, with local food vendors, craft drinks, roving theatre, and artisan markets. Tickets start at $69.90 from Moshtix, with family passes available for $169 (two adults and three under-18s) and free entry for children under five – “fantastic value given the calibre of the artists,” Callam says.

Meanwhile, across town, Hagley Park plays host to the Great Kiwi Beer Festival on 31 January 2026, the ultimate day out for craft beer lovers and anyone looking for a vibrant social experience. Featuring an impressive lineup of breweries, including newcomers No.19 Brewing Company and Renegade Brewing Co., the festival celebrates Aotearoa’s thriving beer scene.

Attendees can sample rare and limited-edition brews, discover food zones featuring festival favourites from the likes of Fried Chicken Club and Low & Slow, and enjoy live performances from Th’ Dudes and Borderline. The festival also features interactive seminars exploring the art of beer and food pairings, offering something for both the curious and the connoisseur.

For those seeking an elevated experience, the VIP package ($289 + BF) offers exclusive access to a reserved area with complimentary food service and premium beers on tap from the festival’s best brewers – the ultimate way to savour the day.

Christchurch-based Team Event, the creative force behind Electric Avenue, the South Island Wine & Food Festival, and the Live in the Park series, produces both events. Together, they celebrate everything that makes Canterbury’s summer special – music, community, and great food.

BENEATH THE SQUARE

The past stories of Cathedral Square are set to come alive in February.

The Christchurch Archaeology Project is preparing to unveil a remarkable new exhibition inside Christ Church Cathedral – Cathedral Square Unearthed.

Running from 16 to 22 February 2026, the event coincides with the 15th anniversary of the 22 February earthquake, offering Christchurch residents a powerful opportunity to reconnect with the city’s past.

Spearheaded by Katharine Watson of the Christchurch Archaeology Project and Jane Leighs, in conjunction with the Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Project, the exhibition will reveal artefacts and stories unearthed during the post-quake rebuild.

“The 2011 earthquakes were an incredible moment for archaeology,” says Katharine. “Because of existing legislation, we were able to collect information before it was gone forever. The devastation was centred on places that had been occupied for generations – from early Māori to European settlers – and it changed the level of information we were able to recover.”

The exhibition focuses on items found in and around Cathedral Square, using them to piece together the lives of Christchurch’s earliest residents and merchants. Everyday objects – once discarded and forgotten – now help tell the story of how the city was built.

“It’s the everyday stories that offer the most fascinating insight,” Katharine explains. “It’s about the people who gave up everything they knew and took a leap of faith. It shows so much courage.”

Māori archaeology was also discovered near the Cathedral site, and the team has been working closely with local hapū and Māori advisors to ensure those stories are told respectfully.

“This is a new form of archaeology,” adds Jane. “It used to be about treasure hunting and moving

things from their place of origin. Now it’s about telling the stories of place and community.”

Once an artefact is found, the team delves into the life behind it – researching newspaper archives, historical documents, and photographs to build a full picture of the person or family it belonged to. “We find the butcher, the candlestick maker, the fishmonger,” says Katharine. “We interpret somebody’s life and place in the world.”

To bring these stories vividly to life, the exhibition will combine artefacts, projections, augmented reality, and digital displays, creating a sensory, multimedia experience. The design team are trained internationally and locally, ensuring a world-class exhibition grounded in local storytelling.

The project’s guiding principles are generosity and inclusivity – bringing people together, using creative local talent, and producing resources that can be reused beyond the exhibition itself. It’s as much about community as it is about history.

“We know the Cathedral is a taonga for the people of Christchurch,” says Jane. “Part of our job is to listen to people’s stories and help spark their memories.”

Locals will be invited to contribute photographs, family stories, or memories online – adding new layers to the city’s collective narrative. The exhibition will be free to attend, with tickets available from 5 December through Humantix. Access will be limited to those aged 10 and above, and visitors will need closed-toe shoes and protective equipment due to the uneven surface inside the Cathedral.

Following its debut, the team hopes to take the exhibition on tour – to schools, libraries, and public spaces – while plans are underway to find a permanent home for this extraordinary collection.

Denture future

When most people think about dentures, they probably don’t imagine an innovative, technologydriven industry – but Duchenne Denture Specialists is ready to change that. From their Merivale clinic, Duchenne is leading the charge towards a digital future that redefines the industry and improves the lives of denture wearers across Aotearoa New Zealand. If you don’t wear a denture, you might not realise the incredible impact a high-quality, well-fitting denture can have on someone’s life. For Duchenne’s patients, a great denture represents more than eating comfortably; it’s a gateway to a more confident, socially connected life, restoring joy and selfassurance every single day.

With this in mind, Duchenne set out to explore how they could use technology to create better dentures. The result was their market-leading D³ Digital Denture system. The D³ system was developed in conjunction with world leaders in 3D printing and milling, and combines cutting-edge technology with decades of clinical experience, delivering unmatched comfort, precision, and aesthetics. Unlike a traditional denture – which is made completely by hand – D³ digital dentures use computer-aided design and manufacturing to produce a 3D milled denture, which is then hand-finished by a technician. The result is a bespoke denture that’s lighter, stronger, and often more comfortable than a traditional denture. Digital dentures are also more cost-effective than traditional dentures, and offer more customisation; patients can make tooth shape and colour selections to create a

smile they love. Each digital denture is milled and finished in Duchenne’s Christchurch lab, before being fitted in one of their clinics. It’s an exciting move forward for the industry, and a triumph of local innovation. Each denture is tailored to the individual, ensuring a comfortable fit that restores confidence, enhances function, and transforms smiles.

Where Duchenne’s D³ system really shines is when a ‘denture emergency’ happens, and a denture is lost or broken and in need of fast replacement. For every digital denture created, Duchenne stores a backup file in its DigiStore system. If the denture is ever lost or broken, an exact copy can be made, generally within three working days. Compared with the four-week wait for a traditional denture replacement, it’s a gamechanging advancement that lets people get back to living a full life, faster than ever, restoring confidence, comfort, and peace of mind with remarkable speed and precision through advanced digital innovation.

Duchenne believes this technology should be accessible to everyone who wears a denture, not just existing patients. Anyone can book a DigiStore scan – regardless of when or where their denture was made – and the Duchenne team will create and securely store a precise digital copy. If the denture is ever lost or broken, an exact replica can be made quickly – faster, stronger, and better than ever. This service offers peace of mind, convenience, and confidence for every denture wearer across New Zealand. The innovative D³ denture scans are available now at Duchenne clinics.

LIFTING SPACES

The Warring Group has unveiled two new additions to The Terrace – Hugo and Botanic, each a masterclass in refined design, natural materials, and thoughtful craftsmanship.

Hugo, a French-influenced restaurant, and Botanic, a purpose-designed, light-filled event space, share the signature Warring Group aesthetic: clean marble bar tops, plush furnishings, a mirrored ceiling reflecting the Avon River, and soft, ambient lighting.

“We wanted both spaces to feel contemporary yet warm – a balance of form, light, and natural finishes,” says Jen Warring, who co-directs the creative elements across the group with her husband David. “We love working with natural marble and granite. They’re not only durable and practical for commercial use, but they also bring depth and character. The Patagonia Quartzite connects the two venues visually – you can see its beautiful tones even from outside. It’s warm, colourful, and has this wonderful depth. Because both spaces have darker elements, it also looks incredible when backlit. We worked closely with Peter Carroll from Slabco, a specialist importer and stockist of natural stone, to source the stone from Brazil, and Shane Boyd fabricated and installed these stunning standout features.”

The custom red leather dining chairs, inspired by the logo, are beautifully designed and made by Maelstrom Design.

Renowned for its dramatic veining and variation, Patagonia Quartzite fuses white quartz, feldspar, and rich earthy tones – deep chocolate, gold, black, cream, and beige – into a mesmerising natural pattern. Each slab was hand-selected and imported to meet the Warrings’ design expectations. The translucent qualities of the stone lend themselves beautifully to backlighting, creating a dynamic, atmospheric feature behind the bar that shifts subtly as the light changes throughout the day.

This project continues a successful partnership between Slabco, Shane Boyd Granite, and the Warring Group, who have previously collaborated on other acclaimed venues such as Rocca and King of Snake. Each showcases a curated selection of natural stones – from Rosso Lepanto Marble from Turkey and Nero Marquina from Spain to Italy’s iconic Carrara Marble – materials chosen as much for their durability as their artistry.

Drawing inspiration from European travels, Jen and David worked with Maelstrom Design to create bespoke pieces that echo Hugo’s French sensibility. The restaurant’s red leather dining chairs, inspired by the logo, are instantly distinctive. “We wanted something really unique – to bring in a sense of French charm,” says Jen. “It’s wonderful seeing people notice and comment on the details.”

Montreux Furniture manufactured the velvet dining chairs that complement the dining space at Hugo, as well as the elegantly simple dining chairs for Botanic, both making a subtle yet striking statement.

To complement the interiors, Kim Chan Florist and Event Stylist crafted a floral design for Botanic. Under the glass roof, graceful white cosmos – symbolising harmony, peace, and balance – cascade from suspended baskets, creating an ever-fresh, living atmosphere. “We worked off Jen’s brief, says Kim, “she wanted it to feel inviting, inspiring, and natural. “ It captures the easy beauty of nature within a contemporary, welcoming setting.”

For Jen, hospitality design is about the total experience. “When you’re designing these kinds of spaces, it has to be the whole package,” she says. “At Hugo, people are staying longer, relaxing more. The design invites people to slow down and remain within the space.”

A JOB WELL DONE

Daikin Park’s new 8,500sqm facility in Hornby is now officially open – a milestone marking the completion of a smooth and highly efficient development.

Ben Lagan of Carbon Property, a specialist property development management service, describes the development as “streamlined” from start to finish.

“It has been really smooth. The building and design team absorbed quite a large amount of change, yet still completed two weeks earlier than the original completion date,” he says.

Daikin, one of the world’s leading heatpump (HVAC) companies, has developed several ‘Daikin Parks’ internationally, but its Christchurch facility stands out.

“Choosing Epoch [landlord] and Carbon Property [developer] may have been considered unconventional, but ultimately it was a decision driven by their determination to present a plan that met our high standards and expectations. Over the past 18 months of working together, they have exceeded those expectations in quality, project management, and delivery,” says Michael Trad, Director of Daikin NZ and GM of Supply Chain, IT & Procurement.

Sustainability was a key part of the planning from the outset, Ben explains.

“We set out to incorporate sustainability initiatives as a minimum standard, then halfway through the project, we completely absorbed the entire Green Star accreditation process into the project. We’re now on track for a five-star Green Star rating.”

Daikin Park Christchurch is a purposebuilt, sustainable facility featuring a 100kW solar system, EV chargers, and rainwater harvesting. Advanced HVAC systems maximise energy efficiency and air quality.

A dedicated training academy supports industry skills and innovation, while upgraded supply chain operations improve response times and customer service across the South Island.

“It really is a game changer for our employees, our customers, and the local community,” says Daikin Managing Director Ryuta Hayashibara.

“We even added a four-hole mini golf putting course at the back of the facility. It’s important in industrial suburbs to create your own fun, otherwise they can become very functional areas of the city. It was Epoch’s and Carbon Property’s gift to the local team at Daikin,” says Ben.

He says Daikin’s main motivator for committing to its own warehouse was strengthening its presence and training capacity within the South Island. “This is a clear mark of Daikin’s commitment to the South Island. The volume of this building and its stock is a huge commitment to 1.2 million people throughout the island that it will serve.”

Like other projects Carbon Property has managed, Ben has designed the building layout for future flexibility. “We had to provide a fully flexible platform for the landlord. With the current positioning of the building, you can change the entire operational flow of the premises. We’ve also allowed structural capacity to support fire sprinklers should a future tenant need them in 20 years’ time.”

For Carbon Property, the experience has also been a valuable learning opportunity. “They talk about the ‘Daikin Way.’ They’ve refined their operation over many years – we’re not there to revolutionise it. Our role is to develop the most efficient property solution around their world class business solution.”

WHERE HERITAGE MEETS THE VINES

Tucked among the golden rows of Rapaura’s vineyards, The Marlborough Boutique Hotel & Vineyard is a place where heritage and modern luxury blend effortlessly. Set on sixteen acres of gardens and vines, it feels intimate and unhurried – a retreat where guests can reconnect with the beauty and generosity of Marlborough life.

The stately 1901 former convent at its heart still carries whispers of its past, yet today it welcomes travellers with a warmth and grace entirely its own. Each of the ten suites is unique – shaped by the building’s history and refreshed with contemporary design, ensuites, and modern comforts. High ceilings, soft textures, and handcrafted details create a relaxed elegance.

As evening falls, guests gather in the renovated chapel, now the ‘Chapel Bar Guest Lounge’, where pre-dinner cocktails set the tone before guests drift out to the large outdoor fire and then on to dinner.

Beyond the main house, the gardens offer a sanctuary of calm with more than 400 exotic and native trees and shrubs, a springfed creek, and a chorus of birdsong. The estate’s own boutique vineyard produces Merlot, Malbec, Riesling, Rosé, and the region’s celebrated Sauvignon Blanc – poured exclusively on site.

At the heart of the experience is the Cuisine Hat-awarded Harvest Restaurant, where the rhythm of the seasons shapes the menu. The kitchen is supplied by the estate’s organic garden and trusted local producers. The wine list, curated by Food & Beverage Manager Sukesh PM and Sommelier Neil Kapadia, is a journey in itself – an evolving collection celebrating the best of Marlborough and New Zealand. Alongside the estate’s vintages, guests discover small-batch treasures and rare finds,

often sourced in limited quantities through close relationships with local winemakers.

Hidden within the estate is ‘The Secret Shack’, an enchanting private dining hideaway for two where time slows and memories are made. Overlooking Spring Creek, the vineyards, and out to the Wither Hills, it offers an experience both intimate and unforgettable. Here, Executive Chef Wieland Matzig or Head Chef Abhishek Thakur craft and serve a three-course menu which can be paired with wines of your choice.

When the mood turns outward, Marlborough is a region to be explored. Wander or cycle through renowned vineyards, taste the many varietals on offer, meet the makers behind the wines, or lace up your walking shoes for the famous Queen Charlotte Track – one of New Zealand’s most beautiful coastal trails. For those drawn to the water, a cruise or kayak through the Marlborough Sounds reveals turquoise bays, seals, and playful dolphins – or visit predatorfree Kaipupu Point and experience the region’s native flora and fauna.

Or simply linger onsite by the outdoor heated pool, play croquet, frisbee golf, or tennis, or find a quiet nook with a glass in hand. At The Marlborough, days are unhurried, conversations linger, and time itself seems to slow.

A collection of seasonal packages allows guests to experience the estate’s changing moods – from brilliant autumn colours to the warmth of winter fires. Details and current offers are available on the website or by calling direct.

Getting here is easy – and part of the pleasure. The Coastal Pacific train traces the eastern coastline to Blenheim, or guests can fly direct from Christchurch with Originair, now expanding to a twice-daily service. For those who prefer the scenic drive, the journey rewards at every turn.

First steps to a perfectly balanced future

As this year rapidly progresses to its endpoint, do you stop and ponder? Consider its highlights and challenges, give thanks for the lessons 2025 provided you with, and then plan for the new year. I know it’s a daunting task and some prefer to roll with whatever comes along, but I like to think about what the future could hold – and never more than before the Christmas rush.

I like to sit down and reflect, think deeply about what could be improved, what could change, or even be abandoned, and how I can learn, give, and journey a little more kindly.

This year has been particularly full, balancing, always balancing, the requirements of life.

Running our business along with my partners and our in-house force of nature, Janelle, connecting daily with my beloved Dad, now Mum is no longer with us, and doing everything else that comes with trying to live a healthy, relatively focused, full life with my husband John and our family.

This year’s lessons have been great reminders that you can shed light or cast a shadow, and they remind me to spend more time with good people.

Those who lift rather than limit you and act as cheerleaders when you need an additional dose of confidence. Is there someone like that in your corner? If not, find them. A close friend of mine calls that person or persons your

‘tribe’, so maybe the year ahead will allow you to find that group.

How about sorting out your finances too?

So much of what I do in business is based around supporting people to excel and then making wise decisions with the rewards that come from working hard. It sounds easy, but it’s often not – especially when everywhere you look there’s either another bill or another item that you feel you simply can’t live without.

Are your health and your wellbeing what they need to be to enjoy your life and your body? It’s a powerful lesson when you find out something unexpected about yourself, as I did when a friend took me to a Pilates lesson. Besides finding muscle groups I didn’t know I had and being overwhelmed when I took on some of the exercises involving stirrups, I learnt that I could manage if I worked at it. Maybe not excel but manage! Excelling is the next step, but I can still get some health benefits while having fun.

I now go with my husband and have nailed some 150 sessions this year off a dead cold start.

I share this not to self-congratulate, but to say that if you take that first step, who knows where it will lead.

If you stop overthinking and start doing, who knows? And if you plan for the year that’s coming, I know that you’ll get a lot more out of it. Here’s to you!

A PLACE TO BREATHE

Turn into Moncks Bay and the sea opens up before you, the bustle of the city fading into calm. Perched above this quiet coastline, Emily Heights captures the best of both worlds – peaceful coastal living just 20 minutes from central Christchurch – a space to live, breathe, and connect.

Here, life moves at your own pace. The coast invites you to surf or paddle, while the nearby estuary teems with birdlife. A 6.5km coastal walkway traces the shoreline – ideal for morning runs or sunset strolls – and the Port Hills behind offer endless trails to explore. Nearby Redcliffs and Sumner tempt with cafés, boutiques, and beachside charm.

Four new sections at Emily Heights are now available – a rare opportunity to secure a prime piece of Moncks Bay’s most admired hillside. With sweeping sea views, all within 350 metres of the shore, each site has been designed to protect the land’s natural contours and outlooks.

“These sections really do offer all the ingredients for an enviable, active lifestyle,” says Angela Webb of Bayleys Canterbury.

For some, Emily Heights will be a family home; for others, it’s a chance to secure a site in one of Christchurch’s most desirable hillside settings. With no build timeframe, owners can take their time – planning and creating a home that grows with them.

Morning swims at the bay, evening walks in the hills – Emily Heights is not just a place to live, it’s a better way to live.

Ranging from 749sqm to 1,365sqm, the sections are ready for new owners to create their dream coastal retreat. Titles are expected in January 2026, with the deadline sale closing 3 December 2025 (unless sold prior).

Emily Heights is where sea, sky, and hillside living come together in perfect balance.

CLUB COOL

Pippa Burnett of Pippa Burnett Interiors, in collaboration with James Patterson from Walker Architecture, brings colour into action at Elmwood Park Bowling Club in Christchurch.

Pippa was invited to help usher the much-loved club into a new era with a modern clubhouse that balances history and personality. Working closely with architect James Patterson, she selected paint colours and tiles to complement his designs for the bar joinery, entrance display, and feature ceiling.

Colour, says Pippa, defines space and adds dimension to rooms that might otherwise feel flat. The two club rooms can be used separately or joined together, each retaining its own character. Resene Black White brightens the smaller club-day room, while Resene Fuscous Grey anchors the larger tournament space. The central bar, finished in rust-coloured mosaic tiles, creates a striking focal point that complements the timber ceiling and charcoal carpet.

Pippa admits colour can be daunting but encourages drawing inspiration from the environment. The lush green bowling lawn guided her palette, while playful touches of Resene Midwinter Mist and Resene Jurassic bring personality to the bathrooms. She always keeps one or two “wild-card” colours up her sleeve, asking herself: “Can we push this further? How can we make this more interesting?”

Whisky, the Festive Spirit

PALATE

In defence of fruitcake

hh, fruitcake. The most divisive item on the Christmas table. Some see it as a festive necessity. The boozy, jewel-toned centrepiece that announces the season. Others view it as a dense brick of regret, something best used as a paperweight for the paisley napkins.

Some prefer their fruitcake light and airy. Others insist that a true fruitcake should be dark, rich, and unapologetically heavy. Traditionalists swear by a layer of marzipan, sealed beneath stark white royal icing and crowned with a handful of glacé cherries. The minimalists let the sticky fruit and nuts do the talking.

Versions of fruitcake have been eaten for centuries, from Roman times when barley mash and pomegranate seeds were the height of sophistication, to Victorian Britain, where a well-soaked fruitcake became synonymous with both Christmas and weddings. Traditionally, fruitcakes were baked months ahead of Christmas and ‘fed’ with spirits over time. A slow, boozy way to keep them rich and full of flavour.

About five years ago, I read an essay by Laurie Colwin on Caribbean black cake in her 1988 book Home Cooking: A Writer in the Kitchen Colwin credits the recipe to the Vincentian nanny who worked for her family. Since then, it’s been my go-to at Full Time Tart.

I start the process in August. When the rest of New Zealand is still sipping on mulled wine and booking ski weekends, I am thinking ahead to the festive season that always feels ‘just around the corner’. The dried fruit mix of sultanas, raisins, currants, and prunes goes into a bath of rum and brandy, where it steeps for months. By December, it’s glossy and decadently heady. I roughly puree the mix into an inky paste. It gives the cake its deep, almost black colour and a texture more reminiscent of fudge than crumb.

The kitchen smells like every Christmas you’ve ever had and every one still to come. A haze of spice, sugar, and spirits. While Colwin’s version might be topped with more traditional icing, I’ve taken some liberties. Instead of marzipan or royal icing, I serve mine with a generous dollop of brandy butter.

If you’d rather skip the months of soaking and stirring, you can order my black cake directly from fulltimetart.co.nz/tarts-pantry for your Christmas table. It’s rich, boozy, and might just turn even the most devoted fruitcake sceptic into a convert.

A SWEET NEW CHAPTER

After an impressive 38 years of serving up all things sugar, cream, and celebration, Christchurch institution Strawberry Fare has opened a sweet second chapter in Northwood. The new site offers a smaller, refined version of their well-loved menu, but with the same warmth and indulgence that has made the Bealey Avenue flagship a city favourite for generations. At the heart of this refresh is balance. Keeping the classics we all crave. The famous Sticky Date Pudding and those dreamy Strawberry Pillows remain centre stage, while a few lighter, plant-based options make room for those seeking something a little less decadent. The Chef’s Tasting Plate is now a trio of the chef’s favorite desserts. A clever nod to nostalgia while adding innovation.

For those loyal to the Bealey Avenue spot, the festive season promises extra cheer. The iconic city location will be open on Christmas Day, offering a special three-course set menu, paired with an elevated view through the glass façade out to leafy Hagley Park. And, of course, throughout the season, Clevedon Coast oysters

and Mumm Cordon Rouge are never far from reach at the Merivale restaurant.

The wine list has been refreshed, with selections that pair seamlessly with both desserts and savoury courses. Dessert cocktails like Mango Tastic, Tiramisu Martini, and Strawberries & Cream have been stealing the show lately, because whoever said dessert can’t come first?

The city restaurant is open seven days a week from 8.30am till late, while Northwood is currently welcoming guests guests from Wednesday to Sunday, 8.30am till late, and Monday and Tuesday for breakfast and lunch. And of course desserts! After all, ‘tis the season when gluttony is very much encouraged.

But what makes Strawberry Fare truly feel like home isn’t just the food. It’s the experience. Chocolate piped plates to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries are always at the ready. It’s clear that no request is too much for the friendly team. Owner and chef Shafeeq Ismail plans to continue the Strawberry Fare legacy with the arrival of seasonal menus in 2026, promising delicious dishes that will keep both loyal regulars and new visitors coming back for more.

FUSE REAL FRUIT ICECREAM PALETA GELATERIA

73 Cashmere Road @fuserealfruiticecream

After plying the North Island for years, this artisan scoop shop has finally landed in Ōtautahi. Our first South Island flag-drop of Duck Island! Lines have been out the door and snaking around the street for weeks, but I finally decided to join the queue to experience a double scoop of deliciousness. Inside, you’ll find a candy-pink, pastel-tiled parlour, with up to 24 flavours rotating through the display. Feast on options like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Fairy Bread, White Chocolate Pomegranate Macadamia, and, of course, the Toast and Jam collaboration with Grizzly Baked Goods. Welcome to our beautiful city, Duck Island! We can’t wait to stop by after a rugby game at the new stadium, duck out of work for a icy cold cleanser, and swing by for a scoop on a sunny summery Sunday.

Nothing quite beats a real fruit ice cream and a sunny riverside stroll. For this, Fuse has you sorted. Parked near the bottom of Hackthorne Road, this cheerful little cart hums with families, joggers, and ice cream devotees. The process is delightfully simple: pick your size (regular or kiddie), your base (classic vanilla, chocolate, or frozen yoghurt), then your fruit. Their lineup is impressive! Berries galore, plus mango, sour cherry, passionfruit, banana, and, for the rebels among us, Nutella or peanut butter can be added to the mix. I went for frozen yoghurt with sour cherry and can confirm: utterly scrumptious. Creamy, tangy, perfectly refreshing! The true taste of summer in a cone.

255 St Asaph Street, Little High Eatery @paleta_nz

What do you mean you haven’t tried Paleta? It had been a while since I’d wandered through Little High, but one spoonful of their peanut butter gelato changed everything. A rogue move for someone who usually sticks to a classic chocolate or something fruity. But let it be known, I’ve since returned twice in the space of the month, dragging friends along to prove there’s life before and life after this gelato. It’s impossibly smooth and decadently rich with roasted peanut flavour. I should really branch out… Tiramisu, Mango Sorbetto, Dulce De Leche, they all look divine! But, my advice? Start with the peanut butter. Top it with Nutella, whipped cream, maybe a hot brownie, and prepare to enjoy this sweet sweet life after discovering Paleta.

The flavours on offer include Peanut Butter, Blueberry, and Fac’n Bac’n. My Labrador Loki demolished a tub in under a minute, giving it the paw shake of approval! You’ll find Cocomutt stocked at cafés, pet stores, groomers, and even at our favourite dog friendly pub, Moon Under Water. LET IT DOUGH

It’s beginning to taste a lot like Christmas. And this Christmas, Bellbird Bakery is proving that you don’t need more to be merrier. The team has taken an intentionally smaller, high-quality approach to their festive range with a scrumptious collection of classics that lean into craftsmanship and flavour.

At the heart of it all is their traditional Fruit Stollen. A rich, buttery loaf, laced with booze-soaked fruit, made from a preferment dough that gives it incredible depth. It has a smooth marzipan centre and each loaf finished with a snowfall of icing sugar. It’s German heritage meets Canterbury Christmas, and it’s utterly delicious.

The fruit mince tarts are a proper festive staple. Bellbird’s version uses a brandysoaked fruit mix that’s been brewing since October, topped with a delicate pastry star. Alongside them, you’ll find chocolate crinkle cookies. They’re the perfect treat to keep Santa fuelled on his Christmas Eve rounds. Just don’t forget the glass of milk.

For the Christmas morning table, Bellbird’s famed croissants are front and centre. Buttery, flaky perfection for the breakfast table before the chaos begins.

Pre-orders for the Christmas range are open online now, with collections available during Christmas week from The Tannery or Holmwood locations. Usually closed on Mondays, The Tannery shop will open specially on Monday 22 December. For those shopping up a storm in the city, Riverside Market will keep you fuelled with pastries pumping throughout the festive season.

Along with their regular farmers’ market appearances, Bellbird will also be at the Riverside Christmas Market on Sunday 7 December and the Tannery Market on Thursday 4 December.

Their usual range of breads, Danishes, sandwiches, and more continues throughout December, and as a sweet bonus, any online order over $100 receives 10 per cent off.

So deck the halls with tarts and pastries, because Bellbird’s Christmas menu looks too good not to be on your Christmas wish list this year.

THE HEARTBEAT OF PAPANUI

Founders Café is the newest heartbeat of The Papanui Club – a sun-lit, modern, and inviting space that’s already becoming a favourite for both members and visitors alike.

General Manager Mark Belton says the vision was simple: create “an exciting and interesting space” that brings new life into the club while still feeling like home for its regulars. And that’s exactly what it’s done. From young parents catching up after school drop-off, to professionals squeezing in a meeting between emails, to the loyal earlymorning crew settling in for their daily routine, it’s a little hub of energy from the moment it opens at 7.30am every day.

The food alone is worth the visit. Classic café comforts like cheese rolls and scones are available alongside fresh salads, roulades, and a polished à la carte menu. Breakfast has quickly developed its own fan club, with the full Founders breakfast, eggs Benedict, and cabinet favourites that disappear almost as fast as they’re made. And with coffee sourced from top New Zealand roasters and a beautiful

range of tea blends from t Leaf T, your caffeine fix or much-needed break is sorted.

Smoothies, iced drinks, and refreshing options round out the offering – perfect for warm afternoons or a quick pick-me-up before heading deeper into the club to enjoy everything else it has to offer. Founders is the new gateway into the wider Papanui Club Experience.

Step past the café and you’re reminded why the club has thrived since its beginnings back in 1958, when a few locals – unimpressed with the service at a nearby establishment – decided they could do better. That spark of “we can make something great” still runs through the entire venue today. Whether you’re heading into Matches for the big game, settling in at the buffet, enjoying live entertainment, or catching up with mates over a drink, there’s a vibrancy that’s uniquely Papanui.

Founders Café honours the past but brings a fresh, social energy into the present. It’s walk-in only, relaxed by design, and already proving itself as the place where good mornings begin, great conversations happen, and the wider club buzz flows naturally around it.

IN DETAIL

According to Forrest Gump

Dr Hamish Campbell is the MP for Ilam, a cancer researcher, and a business owner, championing health, education, and the environment. He serves as Deputy Chair of the Health Select Committee and the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Select Committee.

As Forrest Gump once said, “Life is like a box of chocolates.”

In politics, that couldn’t be more true. Some moments are tough, some a little nutty, and others unexpectedly sweet.

I entered politics from a career in medical research, driven to make a meaningful difference and I am honoured to be recently reselected by the National Party to stand in Ilam in next year’s election. Each day I’m reminded why I chose this path, especially when I meet passionate, dedicated people working tirelessly across our community.

As the year draws to a close, Christmas offers a moment to pause and reflect. It’s a time to celebrate those who give so generously – the volunteers, carers, and advocates who support our cultural communities and those facing hardship. They embody the true spirit of the season.

It’s also an opportunity to celebrate Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region, with all it offers. From our landscapes and activities to our innovation and hospitality, it’s no surprise Christchurch Airport is preparing for record-breaking international arrivals this summer – up 15 per cent on last season and ahead of pre-Covid levels. These visitors will boost our local economy and tourism as they explore our beautiful backyard.

This festive season, may we all embrace the spirit of connection, whether it’s slipping on jandals, sharing food with loved ones, or simply taking a moment to reflect and be grateful.

So yes, life really is like a box of chocolates. Try the ones you’re unsure about – you might just discover a new favourite!

Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful, restful Christmas season and a bright start to the New Year.

ST ALBANS Rhys

“I’m all about planes. I’ve always been obsessed ever since, like, my dad first took me to the airport. I remember being on his shoulders in the regional terminal and just seeing all the planes.

“Now my plan is to be a pilot. I’ve spent a lot of time on flight simulators and stuff. I’ve been to a two-week flight school called the Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School and I flew solo. That was a huge moment, my favourite memory so far.

“There’s an Air New Zealand Cadetship for the ATR, which is the plane I want to fly. So, when that opens, and when I’m old enough, I’ll apply. If you’re passionate about something, you can easily achieve it. You literally just put your mind to it.

“My favourite thing about the central city has got to be the architecture. I really like some of the buildings, both old and new, the design is very ‘my’ style. I like how there’s

lots of things to do, lots of places to go, there’s always something new going on.

“The newer ‘cookie cutter’ houses are really ugly. Houses are supposed to have character, because that’s how you make it a home. You know the old Victorian bungalows? That’s what we’ve got, and it’s really good because it’s got style. It’s unique. You feel like it’s your home. I’m really grateful for it, because you can keep all the memories.

“Commercial buildings that are new, that’s where you want efficiency. So that’s why big square buildings are totally normal. It makes sense, where character is more for luxurious or recreational buildings. We spend a lot of time in the city and I’m quite passionate about the central city landscape. I’ve always had a view in my mind of the way it should be done. And so, I’ve been challenged, as I’ve been growing up, with being accepting of other people’s views and not pushing my own.”

Easily one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in Christchurch. The atmosphere was amazing, and the food was delicious. Loved the attention to detail in both the presentation and service. Highly recommend for anyone wanting something special in the CBD.

On our 3 night tour of Christchurch, Hugo was another level in dining compared to anywhere else we went. The service from the staff was amazing and the food / cocktails were exceptional, highly recommend to all.
