e’re deep in the heart of winter now. While some are enjoying the freedom of travelling to a warmer climate, I’m heading further into the cold with my family and friends on a trip to Wānaka for some skiing, wine tasting and all-round family fun. My love for Otago goes back a long way, to a childhood spent chasing rabbits around my grandparent’s garden in Alexandra and ice-skating on the Lower Manorburn Dam on my double-bladed skates when I was five. The Otago landscape is awe-inspiring, with the golden Southern Alps stretching up to clear blue skies, and I can’t wait to head there soon! he key to an awe-worthy achromatic scheme is to make great use of the bold contrast that black and white offer, and to look for ways to play up shapes and patterns to bring in a sense of texture and continuity through repetition. Resene Eighth Black White is nearly as neutral as paint colours come, yet in this contemporary studio, it looks striking as the main wall colour in contrast to Resene Half Concrete flooring and when layered with Resene Blackjack designs on the breakfast bar and pendant lamps. By choosing patterns with simple motifs, you can easily layer more than one different type into your design. Try incorporating one pattern that’s black-onwhite and another that’s white-on-black. To create the look of the grid design, the bar table is painted in two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted

to Resene Eighth Black White. Once dry, use a ruler and pencil to help you apply parallel strips of 36 mm wide high-quality painter’s masking tape 10 mm apart, pressing firmly to ensure it adheres well. Use a mini roller with a smooth surface sleeve to apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Blackjack. Once the paint is dry, remove the masking, and repeat the process perpendicularly. The pendant lamps are painted in two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Blackjack. Once dry, use a small flat artist’s brush to paint simple randomised curved strokes. Leave approximately 5 cm of space between each stroke and continuously alter the directions. A mix of permeable dividers, such as the timber screen shelf stained in Resene Colorwood Pitch Black, and painted ones, like the angled wall design in Resene Double Concrete, can
help delineate different areas that are meant for different tasks to create the sense of having separate ‘rooms’ without closing them off from flow and light. Plus, they make the space even more dynamic and interesting. The addition of mid-tone greys, such as the plant pot in Resene Tapa and the basil pot in Resene Double Concrete, effectively works as an accent colour in this space and keeps it truly achromatic. But if you’re looking for a pop of colour to add some energy, you can’t go wrong with painting a few accessories in cheerful Resene Canary. If yellow doesn’t suit your tastes, swap Resene Canary for another vibrant primary colour such as Resene Havoc red or Resene Endeavour blue, in keeping with the Bauhauslike modernist feel of this design. resene.co.nz/colorshops

espite the health concerns and lockdowns of the past two years, the real estate market has remained surprisingly buoyant throughout. Even with the ongoing uncertainty, border restrictions and the introduction of the Traffic Light System, buyers were still turning up in droves, and sellers were still happy to have strangers coming through their properties to view. The most common concern pandemic sellers and buyers have had is in relation to the potential for Alert Level or Traffic Light Changes while their property was under contract. Sellers and buyers were understandably keen to protect themselves should a lockdown or restriction be announced in their region, affecting their ability to complete due diligence or, in some cases, to settle. The eleventh edition of the ADLS/ REINZ Agreement for Sale and Purchase of Real Estate was recently released, and this includes a new Covid-19 and Pandemic provisions clause in the body of the agreement to cover off any potential scenarios that could arise. As I write this, we have settled back into the Orange setting as a country, where there are no capacity limits for indoor or outdoor gatherings, and the use of ‘My Vaccine Pass’ is no longer a requirement.
While the housing market seemed to be unstoppable six months ago, it has certainly cooled in recent months. The slowdown has been music to the ears of some buyers who see this as their first chance to buy in a long time. Most sellers however are holding out for a favourable offer, while some buyers are fearful of paying too much. While Canterbury prices are holding steady, last month’s REINZ data showed a 35 per cent decrease in residential sales across the country when compared to the same month last year. You no doubt will have heard some economists predict house prices to fall this year, however, they have also predicted modest gains throughout 2023. Interest rates, global uncertainty, and changes in lending restrictions are all contributing factors here. write with one eye on the rhythmic roll of the Pacific Ocean as it laps the seawall upon which the café I am in sits. The café is called Long Dog. An invitation, it seems, for all the incessantly yapping small dogs in the world and their owners to gather. To the northeast, the cliff faces of the Otago Peninsula abruptly push the sea back. Ironic, really, as the Peninsula has been named one of the most romantic places in the world to propose marriage. Funny, too, that Dunedin on the east coast of Te Waipounamu geographically sits further west than Hokitika, which fronts the Tasman Sea. It is a splendid winter’s day here in Dunedin. While the cloud banks further out to sea, St Clair is bathed in sunshine. The seaside suburb is awash with life. Along the beach, locals perambulate while others line up at the ice-cream van. Plenty imbibe at the handful of cafés that adorn the land’s edge. The rounded form of the hills that make up, and enclose the city, are clear against the sky.

It is the day after the night we mortified our daughter by dancing with her and her friends at a well-known Octagon establishment. In fact, at one stage, we danced to the chanting of ‘who brought their parents’. She recoiled in embarrassment and horror. I really should too. I can’t dance. Unlike the sea, I have no rhythm. While a balmy day, I do enjoy seasonality and winter in the landscape. As parts of the landscape freeze, extra layers we adorn. A winter landscape can be one of beauty and bite. The crispness of the air heightens one’s senses and tingles the extremities of the body. Winter brings traditions. In Dunedin, the hardy, and possibly mad, continue to ride the ocean’s energy through the winter months. Throughout Aotearoa, on the first weekend of May, men, mostly, and often fortified to beat the winter chill, gather around ponds to shoot ducks. Some of these ponds often freeze, and the convivial call of bonspiel one can hear
echo off the frost-bound mountains that enclose. If you have lived in Ophir, you know winter. I haven’t. However, in the company of a farming couple, I once spent a colourful and crisp night in Voss. An alpine town in Norway that embraces its proximity to the North Pole. A town whose lake freezes to a depth of over two metres through winter. In Voss, they race cars on the frozen lake. I am sure we all have memories of experiences we associate with a certain time or tradition in the winter landscape. I don’t shoot ducks or race cars, but as a young lad, the walk to the school bus on a winter’s morning in Kirwee, I vividly remember. At the time, I was rolling Norsca deoderant, a fitting match to the gnarled and solemn macrocarpa that stood guard over our lane.
