F
or me, nothing says autumn like a sprinkle of cinnamon on my coffee, alongside a generous slice of carrot cake. But my favourite thing about this season is watching the outdoor colours change from green to gold and walking through those crunchy leaves in the park. Over summer, my family made a big move to Christchurch, and after a mercifully short stint of searching, we have found a place to call our own. As this magazine goes to print, we will be settling into our new home. In this issue of Abode, we celebrate all things autumn with some great ways to warm up your space. From furnishing with natural woollen fibres to turning up the heat with some brilliant heating options, we have something for everyone. We also bring the outdoors in with a guide to creating your own dried flower arrangements. I’m excited to announce the arrival of our new colour expert, Alex Fulton, who brings her wealth of design knowledge to a gorgeous new regular feature. We also have lots of beautiful homes for you to enjoy! A striking new home with healthy credentials, a hillside residence bursting with style, an award-winning renovation, a stunning rebuild and two inspiring international homes.

ometimes thinking outside the box means literally painting a box on your walls. In this case, the large square wall feature painted in Resene Pumice spans across a corner of the room and stands out against the walls and floor in Resene Ravine. It immediately catches the eye and delineates this corner as a space to play. This type of colour-blocking works particularly well in open-plan spaces, where zones within a larger area need to be defined. To get the lines of your square straight, make sure you use a ruler and a level when marking them out. When painting, use masking tape, carefully and firmly placing it over your marked lines, ensuring it is straight and there are no air bubbles under the tape. After you have painted your square, allow the paint to completely dry before removing the masking tape. In this living room, a soft tonal colour palette of gentle green greys has created a calming and welcoming space. The trick, however, is to add in contrast and texture to prevent the room from feeling too flat or of one note.
Background in Resene Ravine and Resene Pumice, (swatches from left to right) Resene Armadillo, Resene Blue Smoke, Resene Ravine, Resene Pewter, Resene Pumice, Resene Harp, vase in Resene Harp, tealight holder in Resene Ravine.
The nesting tables in Resene Haven (large) and Resene Harp (small) tie in beautifully with the cabinets in Resene Blue Smoke. Tonally, these dewy green greys are very similar, so pops of fresh white and darker charcoals are called on to add some visual contrast. These come in through the vases on the cabinets, which are painted in the armour-like grey of Resene Armadillo, and the pale green grey of Resene Harp. Fresh white couches with warm wooden legs achieve the same effect. The print on the wall adds a similar graphic contrast whilst continuing the room’s palpable angular motif. To prevent this boxy space from feeling too, well, square, texture and curves are important finishing touches. A soft rug will always work wonders, as will generous throws and cushions. Foliage such as eucalyptus is the perfect addition to this tonal space as it fits in with the colour palette beautifully whilst also adding textural softness. resene.co.nz/colorshops

love seasonality. Physiologically, I am more temperate than tropical. Some of you will be familiar with “To Autumn”, the poem by English Romantic poet John Keats. It starts as such: Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run; To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees, And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
I do not pretend to be a man of overly deep thought; I am in awe of those who are. However, my understanding of this poem is that it is an expression of “reverence and awe for the great changes wrought by nature as autumn brings its riches to the landscape”.
Following a fantastic flowering, our feijoa hedge is once again bountiful with ripeness. Autumn will bring a little richness to our patch. While some will default to leaf fall, and its inherent nuisance, beyond one’s own garden the landscape resplendent in autumn colour cannot but stir an emotive response. In the late seventies, we lived in Macraes Flat, just off the Pigroot. The stretch of State Highway 85 between Palmerston and Ranfurly. Dad was sole charge teacher at the local school, and Mum took charge of the grounds, school admin and the school bus. A time when my father’s hair was longer than my mother’s, and not only just. The farming community were confused. Central Otago resonates with me. A fantastic part of the country so aptly expressed by the paintings of Sydney, the poems of Turner and the writings of Marshall. Big sky country this is, and as Turner says, “…a remarkable and affecting landscape.” It is affecting, and autumn heightens my relationship with this land. Land that I also view through the lens of a landscape architect. The philosophy of our three studios across the country is that we respond to and design for the locale. If we are not, we are not doing ourselves justice, nor the landscape. Red tussock grows here, so does Viper’s-bugloss. We use the former, not so much the later. Dry-stacked schist walls express the underlying geology and the cultural overlay of the Central Otago landscape. As do the brilliant autumngold hues of exotic trees. Aghast at the barrenness of their new home, oaks, sycamores, elms and ashes were introduced by the early gold miners and settlers to Arrowtown. Once this tawny landscape of rocky tors and tussocks grabs you – in places overlaid with a filigree of autumn exotic colour and anchored by the linearity of the ubiquitous hawthorn – it is hard to shake. In autumn, it is even more special. 03 366 3268 | roughandmilne.co.nz

Start with these handy tips +K itchens and bathrooms sell a home, so these need to be smart and stylish. There are many options for purchasing kitchen packages which look stunning and can be cost effective. If it’s a high-end home, then always go with stone benchtops, quality joinery and appliances. +K eep colour schemes fairly neutral. Consider “all-white” to appeal to a wide audience. Add a little touch of pizazz with a feature wall, floating timber shelves, a striking splash back and freshly laid flooring.

f you have an eye for design, a love of houses and a passion for property, then adding value to a home for resale can be one of the most rewarding projects you ever undertake. Once you have found a property, always get a building report to uncover any potential game-changers. Having sound advice from an experienced agent is vital. In a sense, you must work backwards. Firstly, find out what the home’s realistic sales value will be when you go to sell. Then carefully calculate a budget on the works needed, add your ideal profit margin and make your offer accordingly with maybe a little room to move.
Secondly, you have to view the home with vision, imagination, creativity and spatial awareness. Walls may need to be removed to add flow, light and open up spaces, which can be costly and need consent. If you are moving plumbing, then the same applies. People notice when you take shortcuts, so look with a critical eye at things like doorknobs, hinges and paintwork. It all has to look pristine and be immaculately clean. Lastly, be aware that you may have a tax liability if you are buying and selling for profit. Getting professional advice is a must, so you don’t get an unexpected tap on the shoulder.
+Y ou will need to update the heating if required and to double glaze and freshly insulate is a wise idea. + I ndoor/outdoor flow and good orientation for the sun is a must to get quality resale results, and this potential needs to be carefully assessed when purchasing. +T hink about storage and the insides of wardrobes as buyers will open these to check them out. +S taging will add that extra layer of colour, texture and style when you go to sell. +E lectrical wiring may need to be replaced to get re-insurance at sale time if the home is older than 1935. Buyers are very savvy and want to know what is happening behind the walls, floors and ceiling spaces.

MULCH
PRUNE
Spreading mulch creates protection and warmth for the roots of your plants as we head into cooler months. Mulching gives a medium for micro-organisms to flourish. In turn they protect your plants from stress and also feed by converting and holding nutrients in the soil ready for spring growth.
Sap flow is slowing down at this time of year, so bring out your secateurs.
HARVEST Autumn is the time to harvest potatoes and pumpkins. Be sure to store them at a temperature of 1.7 to 12.8 degrees Celsius, in a dark room with moderate ventilation. Harvest any other crops that may be damaged by early frosts.

DECIDUOUS TREES - give a light prune each autumn to remove dead branches or branches that are crossing over each other. ROSES - cut back by half in late autumn before their hard winter prune. Spray with copper and oil together later and spray the ground around the plants, too. EVERGREENS - decide on the desired shape and give a light prune. You can cut back a little harder in late winter, if needed.
PLANT Now is the time to plant spring bulbs. Plant them in the ground at a depth of twice the size of the bulb. Generally, they like a well-draining, slightly peaty soil for the best result. It’s also time to plant broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, silverbeet and spinach for very early spring flowering (the flower is the part you harvest and eat).
SOW Vegetables such as carrots, swedes, beetroot and radish can be sown now. If you use cloches and prepare your vegetable garden properly, you’ll reap the rewards later on. Autumn is an excellent time for sowing new lawns; there is good heat in the day and cooler night temperatures that leave dew on the ground by morning. Don’t forget, never let the seeds and seedlings dry out. Your existing lawn also needs feeding at this time. When you do feed, make sure you water well afterwards.
PROTECT Guard any fruit on trees or grapes from birds by draping bird netting over the plant. Protect the seedlings from cold and early spring infestations of aphids by making your own cloches from one-inch stakes, staples and Microklima cloth.

ew Zealand owned and operated company Designer Rugs specialises in unique, handmade custom rugs and carpets for residential and commercial interiors. With exclusive world-renowned collections by artists, designers and celebrities. When it comes to warming up your home Designer Rugs managing director Laura Furey says, “Colourful woollen runners are a great way to create warmth in hallways. Laura adds that, “Felted yarns are making a come-back due to their plush and textural viewpoint, modernised as a dense cut pile instead of a full shag pile.” Regularly extolling the virtues of New Zealand wool to interior designers, architects and clients alike, Laura enjoys explaining why the business uses this amazing yarn as the primary material in its premium rugs. Wool is a long-lasting material, warm in winter, cool in summer. It retains memory for an opulent bounce-back, giving superior softness underfoot. “Many people are not aware of the multitude of health and environmental dangers of synthetic materials that are now being used in clothing, furniture and in the built environment,” says Laura. The natural fibre allows Designer Rugs to create intricate details and patterns in its rugs and carpets. The wool fibre locks dust in until vacuumed out, so, effectively, New Zealand wool cleans your air. With today’s open-plan spaces, rugs are increasingly used where walls once were – transforming rugs from flooring into art.

his hero of local wool is on a journey back to nature. And with this journey, the first step has been to change its name from Cavalier Bremworth to Bremworth. Working with pure New Zealand wool was where the company was born, with founders Tony Timpson and Grant Biel inventing their own tufting system and creating carpet perfection over 60 years ago. And for 60 years, Bremworth carpets have been synonymous with the finest quality, style and innovation. Time has shown that nothing comes close to New Zealand wool. Now Bremworth focuses on revolutionising the home experience for customers and building a better future for everyone. This means asking some tough questions. Like how can the company make people’s homes healthier and happier and more sustainable places to live? The company questioned its production of synthetic carpet, which is known to be essentially made of plastic. The average Kiwi home with synthetic carpet is similar to having 22,000 plastic bags (by weight) on the floor. Bremworth has decided to exit synthetic carpet production for good and will significantly reduce its contribution to the global plastic problem. Per annum, the business was consuming 2.5 million kilograms of synthetic plastic fibre.

Instead, the focus is now on the production of designer, high performing, safe, wool carpets. It’s better for the wellbeing of people and the planet. Now partnering with top local designers, Bremworth can push the limits of contemporary design, using nature’s miracle fibres. The company is also looking at how to re-engineer natural materials to come up with the next generation of innovative home ideas. Bremworth is also aiming to incorporate the United Nations Sustainability goals into its business. This means that the company is committed to investing in research and science to understand how to further reduce its environmental impact and green its processes. And there’s no denying that wool has the power to enhance a healthy home. Wool can resist odours and help control
moisture. It’s naturally hypo-allergenic and fire-resistant. Bremworth wool carpets and rugs also improve a room’s warmth and acoustics, helping the home stay quieter and cosier. It’s also naturally durable, stain-resistant and easy to clean, so perfect for modern family life. It’s a change for Bremworth, its customers, families and everyone’s wellbeing. And it feels good.

s the heat of the summer starts to dissipate and the nights start to close in, our thoughts turn to amping up the ‘cosy’ in our homes. I love autumn – the settled sunny days, the stickiness of marshmallow residue from outdoor bonfires, the flaming foliage and nights where it is cool enough to start to snuggle under blankets. Autumn styling in your home can be simple and artful. A beautiful sculptural vase with leafy foliage from outside, a cloche of pine cones, even a bowl of ruby red apples on the kitchen island can inspire those warm tones. There are lots of ways to cosy up your interior when the cold starts to draw in. Texture and layering are keys to increasing the cosy comfort factor – textured throws and blankets, nubbly linen and glossy velvet cushions, woven rugs and soft lamplight. In the bedroom, upholstered headboards are a lovely way to provide another layer of interest to your space.
With such a fabulous range of fabrics available and additional details with studs and headboard shapes, your bedroom can provide the perfect spot to snuggle in and binge-watch your favourite shows. If you are in need of additional warmth in your home over the winter months, now is a good time to start thinking about your windows. Although glazing and window frame technology have improved over the past 20 years, our windows still represent a significant area of heat loss in our homes. Window treatments – especially curtains and pleated blinds – can dramatically increase the thermal efficiency of your home. Curtains provide thermal benefits when they are full length and wide – covering your window entirely. The correct use of linings for the room position as well as the face fabric, ensures that the cool air is trapped against the glass and between the layers of lining and the room. Heavier weight curtain fabrics can provide additional benefits. However, the heavy lifting in a thermal sense can be done by the linings, ensuring there is still a wide range of options when selecting your face fabrics. Pleated blinds are another highly effective thermal solution. These blinds are a honeycomb construction that fit tightly to the window frame so that there is minimal cool airflow around the blind and into the room. The honeycomb construction traps the air between the cells and minimises the heat transfer into the room. Pleated blinds also stack tightly when opened, so are a good solution when you want to keep your window furnishings simple and minimal whilst maximising the view. 03 313 0123 | featherandoak.co.nz

pdating your fireplace isn’t just about replacing an old one. A new fireplace can completely transform both the function and feel of a room, making it a whole new space that speaks to both purpose and personality. The first thing you need to consider is how the fireplace fits in with your day to day lifestyle. Do you have time to be chopping and stacking wood? Or do you need something more low maintenance? Are you after the romance of a wood fire, or the convenience of a gas fire? The team at Simply Heat are experts at guiding you through the process of choosing a fireplace best suited to you, your lifestyle and your home. Based in Sydenham, Christchurch, its showroom has a comprehensive range of heating solutions. Dedicated staff can discuss your options objectively, whether it be on best heat output or value. If the heat output of a fireplace is an important factor in your decision-making, you’ll need to consider the choice of fuel. Wood burners boast eco-friendly, self-sufficient qualities but gas is the most cost-effective option, saving you money on your energy bills. Not only that, gas fires have come a long way, offering great looking flames with none of the mess or maintenance.

For a modern style renovation, the DS Series frameless linear fireplace, from Escea, is perfect. Crafted in Dunedin – like all Escea fires – it comes in a range of sizes from the DS1150 to the ultra-wide DS1900 at nearly two metres wide. All are available in single and double-sided options. With a large window, the single-sided DS Series gives you a clear view of the generous fuel bed. A see-through, doublesided fire option makes for a dramatic partition and is a great way to connect two spaces. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a chimney in your home to have a fireplace. In fact, there are several options available if you are looking to create a fireplace feature without a chimney. For example, Escea’s gas fires can be installed anywhere with flues that run up, down or even sideways. Escea’s flexible flue and powered vent technology give you the best in both efficiency and aesthetics.
For heritage renovations, Escea has the DF Series, which is perfect for installing into existing fireplace structures and providing a modern appeal. A living room can be transformed with the old-world charm of a traditional fireplace surround using the DF Series Mantel Surround, while bringing all the benefits of a modern gas fire. Peter Wolfkamp from The Block NZ used the DF990 with its extended window height when transforming his Auckland villa. It’s made it “everything that Kiwi homes are not – warm, dry and comfortable,” he says. The DF990’s slim design and clean lines mean it’s perfect for retrofitting into traditional open fireplaces. The fire’s flexible flue system means the new flue can simply get fed up the existing chimney. And like all DF gas fires, the retrofittable fire is a room sealed unit which will keep the home dry and free of toxic fumes, plus with a heat output of up to 8.2kW, the DF990 will heat the whole home. Whether it’s a modern mini renovation or a full-scale villa rebuild, the comprehensive range of fireplace styles available at Simply Heat means you’ll have no trouble finding the perfect design for you. 0800 17 3000 | escea.com 03 365 3685 | simplyheat.co.nz

Choosing function as our key priority, our designs move beyond the decorative as we create objects to engage and interact with. It’s a remarkably resilient, highly breathable fibre that keeps us cool in summer and warm in winter. Wool is great for air quality and is less flammable than synthetic fibres. Bringing wool back into the mainstream supports New Zealand’s farming community.

he warm glow of a fire brings many homes to life in the winter months, but what if the heat from that glow could last even longer? Modern log-burning fires have improved in recent years. The Blaze King catalytic combustion burning fires from Canada are exclusively supplied and installed by Heatstore and live up to their name. These fires are capable of achieving burn times of 15 to 20 hours from a single load of wood while producing thermostatically controlled heat, all night long. If no mess, no fuss and great heat appeal and fits your lifestyle, then a stylish pellet fire is the answer. The Italian Ravelli pellet burners are exclusive to Heatstore and feature the latest technology from one of Europe’s leading manufacturers. The Dual 7 and Natural 7 models take convenience to the next level. These fires are exceptionally efficient, whisperquiet, available with or without a convection fan, self-cleaning, and are fully controllable to a sevenday timer/thermostat. The added bonus for the tech-savvy among us is the optional Wi-Fi which enables all the Ravelli models to be easily operated remotely via a mobile phone or tablet. To find out more about why these two heating heroes reign supreme and have had such phenomenal feedback, visit the Heatstore at 2/472 Blenheim Road in Sockburn.

odern life has many of us spending more of our time indoors. That has certainly been true in 2020, a year in which we observed our homes in more detail than ever before. So the desire to bring natural, mood-enhancing light indoors has become something of a design imperative. Our connection with nature and natural elements are common threads
in all areas of design in the year ahead. Global awareness of our environmental impact has us craving natural materials and textures in our homes. Glamour is still present though, in statement pendants and oversized floor lamps. Sleek black feature lighting is set to stay on trend for some time to come, and the brilliance of chandeliers is still a firm favourite for adding glamour.
