long time ago – and this has really stuck with me – I was chatting to a friend who had bought a new townhouse. Because construction was nearing completion, she had the opportunity to make a few final decisions. What splashback tile would she like? Which option for the kitchen mixer?

I have upgraded a few kitchens in my time and, to me, the choice of tapware is of paramount importance.

here is perhaps nowhere where current trends towards wellness and self-care are more evident than in the bathroom.

Following years of changing work patterns and increased time spent at home, people are seeking spaces that support their physical health, reduce stress, encourage connection and provide a sense of comfort and sanctuary.

Designers are responding by creating bathrooms that feel restorative, comfortable and highly personalised. And homeowners are moving away from purely functional bathrooms and embracing spaces that provide a sense of luxury and escape.

Inspired by high-end hotels and day spas, bathrooms are increasingly featuring walk-in showers, freestanding baths, layered lighting, natural textures and warm, earthy colours.

The focus is on creating an environment that encourages relaxation and self-care.

Features such as underfloor heating, backlit mirrors, integrated storage and quiet ventilation systems help transform daily routines into enjoyable experiences.

Similarly, the kitchen continues to be the heart of the home, but the way it looks and functions is evolving. Rather than sleek, clinical spaces, designers and homeowners

are embracing warm colours, textured materials, curved forms and furnitureinspired design. Timber, stone and earthy tones are replacing stark whites and highgloss finishes. The result is a welcoming gathering place for family and friends that feels more connected to the living areas around it.

Storage also plays a significant role in promoting wellbeing. Carefully planned cabinetry, appliance integration and dedicated storage solutions reduce visual clutter and create a greater sense of calm.

When everything has a place, daily tasks become simpler and less stressful.

Wellness design and sustainability are increasingly interconnected. Consumers are showing a strong preference for durable, environmentally responsible materials and energy-efficient appliances. Choices such as low-VOC finishes, recycled materials, water-efficient fittings and energy-saving technology not only reduce environmental impact but also create healthier indoor environments.

Many homeowners are also prioritising longevity, selecting products and finishes that will remain attractive and functional for years to come. Rather than chasing

short-term trends, the focus is shifting towards timeless design that delivers lasting value. Level-entry showers, wider circulation spaces, improved lighting and accessible storage solutions allow homes to adapt to changing needs over time. When thoughtfully integrated, these features can enhance convenience, comfort and usability for people of all ages and stages of life.

There is also growing interest in biophilic design, which is the incorporation of natural materials, greenery and organic forms into interiors. Timber finishes, stone surfaces, indoor plants and increased access to daylight help create a stronger connection with nature and contribute to a calming atmosphere.

The wellness home reflects a broader shift in how people want to live. By combining thoughtful design, natural materials and sustainable choices, today’s kitchens and bathrooms are evolving into spaces that actively contribute to better living.

A cathedral without a roof Perhaps there can be peace and acceptance in a gentle preservation among the ruins, wonders Tony Milne of Rough Milne Mitchell Landscape Architects.

I

have recently returned from two weeks in London. The primary reason was to watch the Black Caps at Lord’s; soggy days and a poor pitch did not dampen the conviviality at the home of cricket. Otherwise, I did what Antipodeans do: walked too far, looked up at buildings, found reasons for a pint, and pretended midnight fried chicken after a Harry Styles concert was cultural research.

Between the Tower of London and the City’s glassier ambitions, my son Jack and I found St Dunstan-in-the-East: a ruined church behaving with extraordinary grace as a garden. Enough walls remain to hold memory. Windows frame leaves instead of stained glass; climbing plants soften stone; office workers eat beneath arches made roofless by war. It is a ruin, garden, memorial, sanctuary and very good place to sit down. I thought of Christ Church Cathedral immediately.

This is dangerous territory. Few subjects in Christchurch carry such grief, symbolism, money, argument, hope and fatigue. The Cathedral is more than a building: it is shorthand for loss, identity, delay and what a city owes its past. Its reinstatement has been

discussed for so long that the discussion itself has become urban fabric. Scaffolding, fences, renderings, announcements and pauses have all had their turn. Standing in St Dunstan, I wondered whether rebuilding had obscured another possibility: not abandonment or demolition, but transformation.

What if the Cathedral remained partly ruined and became, deliberately, a sacred garden at the city’s centre?

I do not suggest this lightly, nor to diminish its Anglican life. A cathedral garden could hold worship, gathering, performance, silence and civic ceremony. Stabilised stone walls could remain while planting, water, light and sky entered the nave. The ground might weave stone, lawn, timber and gravel through former aisles and chapels. Bells, birds and buskers could take their chances.

A roofless sacred space admits weather – no small commitment in Christchurch – and time. Moss, blossom, rain and winter light become architecture. The building neither denies the earthquakes nor remains trapped by them; damage is not hidden but dignified.

Landscape architecture often works best with what remains. We understand edges,

absences and thresholds. A wall need not enclose to hold meaning, and a garden can carry grief without becoming morbid. A planted ruin in Cathedral Square could echo St Dunstan-in-the-East while remaining ˉ unmistakably of Otautahi Christchurch.

Practical matters remain, such as heritage, structure, liturgy, funding, maintenance and pigeons with entitlement issues. Yet practicality should not make imagination timid. The question is not whether we can restore the Cathedral exactly, but whether we can make something truthful, generous and enduring from what history has left.

Perhaps a city rebuilt from rupture deserves a Cathedral that acknowledges rupture beautifully: not a failure to rebuild, but another kind of completion. A place where stone, planting, memory and sky meet in the middle of the city. Christ Church Cathedral as a partly ruined, sacred garden.

Indoor-outdoor design continues to influence how we style our homes, and bathrooms are no exception. It’s not about creating a jungle indoors. It’s about creating a feeling. Spaces that feel calm, restorative and easy to live in grab a buyer’s attention.

onstruction and development lending has always been close to my heart.

Growing up around my family’s brick supply business, I saw firsthand the challenges builders and developers face in getting projects off the ground.

Long before construction finance became a focus of the wider mortgage industry, my good friend and fellow adviser, Daniel Kuo, and I were working in this space through NZ Mortgages. At the time, not many brokers wanted to deal with the complexity. We did, because we could see how much good advice and the right funding could help people move forward.

When NZ Mortgages merged with Squirrel in 2024, it gave us the opportunity to take that expertise even further. We gained access to innovative construction finance solutions and the backing of a nationwide business, while keeping the local relationships that matter. For builders and developers across Canterbury and the wider South Island, that has meant more options and better support throughout the lending process.

One of the most rewarding parts of the journey has been watching Archie Middleton grow into his role. After spending the past

few years learning the ins and outs of construction and development lending as an analyst, Archie stepped into a Mortgage Adviser position this year. Since then, he’s built strong relationships with builders and developers across Christchurch, and we’re now helping clients not only in Canterbury but also, increasingly, in Queenstown and Central Otago.

The demand for specialist construction finance continues to grow. What started as around 5 per cent of our business now represents close to 20 per cent, and in my experience that trend is likely to continue as more builders and developers become aware of the lending options available to them.

CREATING LANDSCAPES Jade Au Morris, head of Otago/Southland region for Kamo Marsh Landscape Architects, discusses design responses to the dramatic surroundings of the Central Lakes District.

O

ne of the things I have come to appreciate most as a landscape architect is that good design is about thinking beyond the finished project.

A successful landscape should continue to function, evolve and develop character as it matures.

Longevity starts with understanding place. In the Central Lakes, the alpine environment informs decisions around site planning, materials, planting and construction. Frost, wind, snow, intense sun and periods of dry weather all influence how a landscape will perform.

Before even putting pen to paper, I consider the landform, aspect, existing vegetation, views and microclimate alongside how the site will actually be used. The aim is to work with these existing qualities rather than compete with them.

How will people move through and use the outdoor spaces? How do we capture sunlight

while providing protection from prevailing winds? And how can the landscape strengthen the relationship between the architecture and its setting?

These observations inform the positioning of outdoor spaces, levels and circulation. A terrace nestled into the landform can provide natural shelter, while carefully positioned planting can frame views, provide privacy and soften the built form.

Material and planting choices are considered together, with durability, maintenance and long-term performance in mind. Locally sourced stone, timber and weathering steel can reflect the colours and textures of the surrounding environment.

Planting is considered not only for its immediate appearance, but also for its resilience, mature form and suitability to local conditions.

What is less visible is equally as important. Good drainage, soil preparation,

irrigation, retaining structures, construction detailing and planting establishment provide the foundation for a successful landscape. These elements may receive little attention once construction is complete, but they have a significant influence on how the landscape performs over time.

Ultimately, landscape architecture is about more than designing outdoor spaces to look good on completion. It’s about creating places that serve the people who use them, and that form a natural extension of the architecture.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work in Queenstown and the surrounding areas is returning to a completed garden.

Seeing a landscape design settle into its environment and be used as intended is, for me, one of the clearest measures of successful landscape architecture. kamomarsh.co.nz
