September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and it’s the perfect time to discover everything your library card can unlock. At the Palm Beach County Library System, your free card connects you to a world of knowledge, creativity and opportunity.
With just one card, you can access thousands of books, eBooks, audiobooks, movies and music. Explore online learning platforms, research tools and language courses. Check out passes to local museums and cultural attractions, all at no cost.
For students, the Library offers tutoring, homework help and test prep. Adults can tap into free job training, resume tools and tech workshops. Families will love storytimes, STEAM programs and engaging events for every age group.
Signing up is easy! Visit any Library branch with a photo ID and proof of address, or register online to start using digital resources right away. Already have a card? This is a great time to encourage a friend or family member to get one too.
In recognition of Library Card Sign-up Month, special decals are available at all branches while supplies last. These decals fit perfectly on top of your card to give a custom design. (Just remember not to cover your barcode/card number.) Choose one from the four fun designs celebrating the theme, "Explore a world of possibilities." Your library card is more than just a piece of plastic, it’s your key to explore a world of possibilities. Visit www.pbclibrary.org to get started.
“Banyan Moon” by Thao Thai + Veiled Presence: The Hidden Mothers and Sara VanDerBeek Sat, Sep 13, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm
A multigenerational family saga centered on three Vietnamese American women who navigate love, loss, identity and the complexities of a shared past. Read the book and join the discussion and a gallery tour led by Norton Museum staff. E-books and audiobooks available on the CloudLibrary app. This is a free event. Space is limited. Register online starting on Aug 01 at www.norton.org.
Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 with President Lyndon Johnson. It started on September 15 to match particularly with the independence days of several Latin American countries. In 1988, President Reagan expanded the observance to a full 30 days, from September 15 to October 15, highlighting the profound contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the fabric of the United States.
The Palm Beach County Library System is dedicated to colorfully celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, committing this time to honor the abundant histories, diverse cultures and lasting traditions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Throughout this month, the Library system curates a lively arrangement of programs designed to engage and enlighten the community.
You can immerse yourself in the passionate rhythms of music and dance, featuring the captivating artistry of Flamenco, the joyful sounds of mariachis and the melodic beauty of Hispanic tunes brought to life by viola and piano.
For those who appreciate the power of storytelling, the Library offers compelling literature and film experiences, including both virtual and in-person book and poetry discussions, alongside enriching movie screenings. Beyond entertainment, there are numerous opportunities for learning and exploration through educational workshops, such as an insightful history lecture and a genealogy program to trace roots.
The celebration also extends to hands-on experiences with art activities and delightful culinary explorations, inviting you to savor the Hispanic flavors.
There are more than books at www.pbclibrary.org:
• Digital Collections: The Library provides access to a vast collection of e-books and audiobooks by Hispanic authors and in Spanish. You might want to explore fiction, non-fiction and poetry from notorious writers such as Mario Benedetti, Yuyi Morales and Sandra Cisneros with CloudLibrary.
• Language Learning Tools: Do you want to learn Spanish or practice it? The Library offers language learning resources, including online courses with Transparent Language Online or Spanish Exchange for Beginners.
• Educational Resources: Access databases and reference materials on Hispanic history and culture, like NewsBank. These resources are excellent for students, educators and anyone interested in learning more about the contributions of Hispanic communities.
• Films: Kanopy offers movies, documentaries, world cinema and series that are in Spanish or that have Spanish subtitles.
• Children’s Activities: Children can explore Hispanic culture through various activities and reading recommendations available at the Library. This helps cultivate an early appreciation for diversity.
For even more ways to participate, including children's programs and a wealth of additional resources, be sure to visit the Library's website, look for the in this months issue of Happenings.
