Did you know?

Halloween’s roots lead back to the pre-Christian, Celtic or Pagan celebration of Samhain, or “Summer’s End.”

Orange represents the harvest of autumn, while black symbolizes longer nights. These traditional Halloween colors serve as a reminder this festival once marked the boundaries between life/spring and death/winter.

“Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and caldron bubble” is from William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” A trio of witches recite the poem as they scheme over a bubbling cauldron and it’s been associated with witches ever since.

The word “witch” comes from the Old English word wicce, meaning “wise woman.” While pumpkins are typically orange, they can also be green, white, red and gray.

Jack-o’-lanterns are believed to have originated in Ireland in the 19th century. However, they carved turnips instead of pumpkins at the time.

Though everyone associates Halloween with “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” the original Washington Irving short story doesn’t mention Halloween.

One-quarter of all the candy sold in the U.S. each year is purchased for Halloween.

Candy corn originally dubbed “Chicken Feed,” became popular once the Goelitz Company took over production in the late 1800s.

The 1978 classic horror flick, Halloween, was filmed on such a shoestring budget that the crew used a $2 Captain James Kirk mask. There’s a statue of Jason Voorhees (from Friday the 13th) at the bottom of a lake in Crosby, Minnesota.

In 1962, everyone was doing the “Monster Mash.” That’s the year that Bobby “Boris” Pickett hit the top spot on the charts. The song was also once banned by the BBC because they considered it “too morbid.”

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is the most-played Halloween song.

The White House was first decorated for Halloween in 1958.

Look for the icon in this issue of Happenings for fall and Halloween related activities.

Diwali: Festival of Lights

Diwali, also known as the “Festival of Lights,” is recognized as India’s biggest holiday and takes place over five days. The festival occurs annually each autumn, often falling in either October or November depending on the lunar calendar.

Diwali is the most important festival of the year in India — and for Hindus in particular. It is celebrated across faiths by over a billion people in the world’s most populous nation and the diaspora. Over five days, people participate in festive gatherings, fireworks displays, feasts and prayer.

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, with variations celebrated in other Indian religions. It symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.”

Deepavali and Diwali, although spelled differently, are both commemorated as the “Festival of Lights.” Both are known as the ‘Feast of Lights,’ but the more precise term is Deepavali, which is derived from Sanskrit and means “a line of lamps.” However, in North India, the word Diwali is commonly used.

Celebrate Italian Heritage Month

October is Italian Heritage Month, a time to honor the culture, history and contributions of Italian Americans. The Palm Beach County Library System offers a variety of resources to explore this rich heritage.

Explore History

Begin with books like “The Journey of the Italians in America,” by Vincenza Scarpaci, which delves into the influence of Italian immigrants in the U.S. For a deeper look, “La Storia: Five Centuries of the Italian American Experience,” by Jerre Mangione offers personal and collective stories of Italian Americans.

Cultural Resources

Through the Hoopla streaming service, you can watch films, such as “The Golden Door,” that depict the Italian immigrant experience.

Learn the Language & Cook Italian Food

With Transparent Language Online, offered by the Library, you can learn conversational Italian. For food enthusiasts, borrow cookbooks like “Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking,” by Marcella Hazan to try traditional Italian dishes.

Visit www.pbclibrary.org or scan the QR code for more resources to discover Italian heritage.

The titles on this list are on order for the Library and can be reserved, but will not be available until the release date.

Breast Cancer Awareness: Understanding, Prevention and Support

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed every October, focuses on increasing awareness, raising funds for research and supporting those affected by the disease. Understanding the risks, recognizing symptoms and the importance of early detection are crucial. The Palm Beach County Library System offers valuable resources to help you stay informed and support breast cancer awareness.

Understanding and Reducing Risks:

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, though it can also affect men. Early detection through regular mammograms and self-exams significantly improve treatment outcomes. While prevention isn’t guaranteed, reducing risk factors such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, limiting alcohol and avoiding smoking can help.

Resources

for Breast Cancer Awareness:

The Library provides a variety of materials to educate and support those interested in breast cancer awareness:

• Books and E-books: Explore comprehensive guides like ”Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book” and ”The Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer Book” available in print and digital formats.

• Health Databases: Access in-depth research through the Gale Health and Wellness and MedlinePlus databases, offering the latest studies and expert advice on breast cancer.

• Support Resources: Titles like ”Breast Cancer Husband,” by Marc Silver offer practical guidance for patients and their loved ones.

• Documentaries and Films: The Library’s digital collection includes documentaries that share inspiring stories of breast cancer survivors.

• Activities and Events: Check our event calendar for health and wellness workshops, including those focused on breast cancer, in October.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a vital time to learn about the disease, support those affected and advocate for research. We are here to help with a wide range of resources. Visit www.pbclibrary.org to explore these materials and get involved in the fight against breast cancer.

Unless noted, activities are on a first-come, first-served basis. For events requiring registration, please visit www.pbclibrary.org.

Dark Shadows is a gothic soap opera that ran from 1969-1971; it became ABC’s highest-rated daytime series by 1969.The show is set in the fictional town of Collinsport, Maine, and revolves around the wealthy Collins family, who are plagued by various supernatural occurrences.

The series gained immense popularity with the introduction of the vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Jonathan Frid. Over its 1,225 episodes, the show featured a wide array of supernatural elements, including ghosts, werewolves, vampires and other creatures of the night.

The show’s success led to two feature films, a 1991 TV remake, a 2012 film reboot directed by Tim Burton, novels and comics.
