Families Reading Together

Holiday Survival Tips for Diabetics

The Seminole Tribe’s Legacy and Native American History Month

21st Annual Families Reading Together

Every year, the Palm Beach County Library System celebrates Families Reading Together! The goal of Families Reading Together is to encourage reading among children and their families regardless of age or language. Reading together is the single most important way to help young children get ready to read. It helps children develop an interest in reading, as well as increases their vocabulary and general knowledge. Children who enjoy being read to are more likely to want to read on their own.

Jewish Book Month

Originally recognized as a week-long celebration, Jewish Book Month can be traced back to the efforts of Fanny Goldstein in the 1920s. In 1943, due to the buildup of excitement around the celebration, a week was turned into a month, and it became a permanent annual fixture during the month before Hanukkah. As a celebration of Jewish literature and cultures, Jewish Book Month provides an opportunity to explore the rich tapestry of Jewish stories, ideas and experiences. From ancient texts to contemporary works, Jewish literature offers a diverse range of perspectives on human life, faith and history. By reading Jewish books, people can gain valuable insights into a culture that has significantly shaped the world.

Jewish literature often delves into themes of resilience, perseverance, and the enduring power of hope. These themes can resonate with people from all backgrounds, regardless of their religious beliefs. Jewish writers have also made significant contributions to various literary genres, including poetry, fiction, drama and non-fiction. By exploring these works, readers can discover new ways of understanding the world and themselves.

Jewish Book Month is a time to appreciate the beauty and complexity of Jewish literature. Whether you are Jewish or not, there is something to be learned and enjoyed in these works. By engaging with Jewish literature, we can foster greater understanding, empathy, and appreciation for the diverse cultures that make up our world.

Holiday Survival Tips for Diabetics: Staying Healthy During Diabetes Awareness Month

November isn’t just the start of the holiday season—it’s also Diabetes Awareness Month. This is a time to raise awareness about diabetes and focus on managing the condition effectively. For those with diabetes, the holidays can present extra challenges, with an abundance of carb-heavy dishes and sugary treats. However, with some thoughtful planning and healthy alternatives, you can enjoy the season while keeping your blood sugar levels in check.

Plan Ahead with Keto and Low-Carb Options

One of the best strategies for managing diabetes during the holidays is to incorporate keto or low-carb recipes into your meals. These options are not only delicious but also help stabilize blood sugar levels. For example, try using almond or coconut flour for baked goods or opt for cauliflower mash instead of traditional potatoes. You can also enjoy ketofriendly treats like sugar-free pumpkin pie or low-carb cookies.

When attending holiday gatherings, offer to bring a dish that fits your dietary needs, such as a savory vegetable dish or a cheese and nut platter. This ensures that you’ll have something healthy to enjoy, while also introducing others to diabetic-friendly alternatives.

Keep Portions in Check

It’s easy to overindulge during the holidays, but even low-carb options can affect your blood sugar if eaten in excess. Try using a smaller plate and focus on filling it with non-starchy vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats. Moderation is key and being mindful of your portions will help you enjoy holiday meals without the post-feast blood sugar spikes.

Be Careful with Holiday Drinks

Many festive drinks like eggnog, punch or hot chocolate are loaded with sugar. Stick to low-carb drinks such as sparkling water with a twist of lime or dry wines. If you prefer a cocktail, consider sugar-free mixers paired with spirits like gin or vodka. Remember, alcohol can affect your blood sugar levels, so drink in moderation and always stay hydrated.

Stay Active During the Festivities

The holiday season often means spending more time indoors, but physical activity is important for managing diabetes. After a big meal, try going for a walk or doing a quick workout at home. Regular physical activity helps balance blood sugar levels and keeps you feeling energized throughout the season.

Library Resources to Help You Manage Diabetes

To support you during Diabetes Awareness Month and throughout the holiday season, the Palm Beach County Library System offers a wealth of resources. Visit www.pbclibrary.org to explore cookbooks and guides designed to help you plan diabetic-friendly and low-carb meals. Check out titles like “The Easy 5-Ingredient Ketogenic Diet Cookbook,” by Jen Fisch or “The Diabetes Code Cookbook,” by Dr. Jason Fung for easy and delicious recipe ideas.

With these tips and resources, you can confidently navigate the holiday season while keeping your health and diabetes in check. This November, let’s raise awareness and celebrate healthy choices!

The Seminole Tribe’s Legacy and Native American History Month

Every November, the United States celebrates Native American History Month—a time to honor the rich cultures, traditions and contributions of Indigenous peoples. One such group with a unique and powerful history is the Seminole Tribe of Florida, who stand apart as the only Native American tribe that never signed a formal peace treaty with the U.S.

During the 19th century, the U.S. government fought three major conflicts known as the Seminole Wars (1817-1858) in an effort to remove the Seminoles from Florida. Despite overwhelming odds, the Seminoles, under the leadership of figures like Osceola, used their knowledge of Florida’s swamps and guerrilla warfare to resist. Although many were forced to relocate, a small group remained in the Everglades, never surrendering to U.S. forces. Today, the Seminole Tribe continues to thrive, proud of their resilience and independence.

This November, take the time to explore the stories of Native American resilience, culture and history, including the legacy of the Seminole Tribe. The Palm Beach County Library System offers a wealth of resources to help you dive deeper. Visit www.pbclibrary.org to discover books like “The Seminole Wars: America’s Longest Indian Conflict” and “An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States,” by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz.

By learning more about Native American history, you can help honor the strength and contributions of Indigenous peoples across the country. Look for this icon that highlights activities related to Native American culture.

Did You Know? The History and Traditions of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a beloved American holiday, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year. But did you know that the history of this holiday dates back much further than the iconic 1621 feast shared by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Native Americans?

The first Thanksgiving, as many know it, was a harvest celebration in Plymouth, Massachusetts. However, it wasn’t until 1863, during the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday, urging all Americans to set aside the last Thursday in November to give thanks for the blessings of the year.

More Than Just Turkey and Football

While turkey is the centerpiece of most Thanksgiving meals today, it wasn’t necessarily the main dish at the first celebration. The Pilgrims and Wampanoag likely dined on venison, seafood and local vegetables. Over the centuries, the holiday evolved and by the 19th century, turkey had become the traditional fare.

Football also became a Thanksgiving tradition in the late 19th century, with the first Thanksgiving football game played between Yale and Princeton in 1876. Since then, it has become a time for families to gather around the TV to enjoy the game together.

How You Can Celebrate with the Library

Looking to learn more about Thanksgiving history and traditions? The Palm Beach County Library System has a wealth of resources available. You can access books, eBooks and even films about Thanksgiving through the Library’s digital collections. Discover the real story behind the holiday or find inspiration for your own family feast with cookbooks, history texts and cultural insights.

Visit www.pbclibrary.org to explore our collection. The Library offers access to digital resources like Hoopla and cloudLibrary, where you can check out titles like "Thanksgiving: The Biography of an American Holiday," by James W. Baker or "The Thanksgiving Story," by Alice Dalgliesh.

No matter how you celebrate, the Palm Beach County Library System is here to help you make your Thanksgiving special and meaningful! Look for the icon for Thanksgiving and fall-related activities.
