With much appreciation and a touch of sadness, the Library System celebrates a true champion of literacy and learning, our retiring County Administrator Verdenia Baker.
Ms. Baker was destined to support libraries. In her early career she was the Budget Analyst for the Office of Fiscal and Budget Management. She reviewed the Library System’s budget during the tenure of Director Jerry Brownlee. During her years as Deputy Administrator and then County Administrator, she supported the Library’s strategic priorities and its budget. She attended the openings of new and renovated libraries, joined our many celebrations of expanded resources and offered advice to improve our Library services.
Some of the key initiatives Ms. Baker supported over her tenure include the move to fine-free borrowing along with fine forgiveness, which opened up opportunities for more people to use the Library. She signed off on the Summer Food Service partnership with the School District, along with our weekend meal kit program. As well, during Ms. Baker’s time in County Administration, she saw the Library reach out beyond its walls through a growing array of online resources including e-books, e-audiobooks and a wide range of informative online resources.
Perhaps Ms. Baker’s most important contribution was supporting the expansion of Library branches across a rapidly growing county.
As part of County Administration, she pushed to get Library bonds on the ballot in 2002 and subsequently approved by the voters. This led to our second major expansion program which added three new locations, replaced three old buildings with new ones and expanded three buildings. As Administrator, she was there to break ground and then cut the ribbon on the newest Library in our system, the Canyon Branch.
Outside of her role as Administrator, one of Ms. Baker’s favorite things to do was to take part in a storytime at a Library branch. She greatly enjoyed reading books to children. Seeing their eyes light up from a well told story, or dancing along to a silly song always brought joy to her heart. As a grandmother herself, Ms. Baker understands the importance of fostering a love of reading at an early age.
As her time as our County Administrator comes to a close, we thank Ms. Baker for her ongoing and steadfast support of our County Library System. Now that she will have more time on her hands, we remind Ms. Baker that her local County Library is only a short drive away. We congratulate her on a well-deserved retirement after a life lived in selfless public service.
Mother’s Day wasn’t always about flowers and brunch?
In fact, the roots of Mother’s Day in the United States began as a call for peace. After the Civil War, activist Julia Ward Howe (who also wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”) proposed a “Mother’s Peace Day” in 1870, encouraging mothers to unite against war. It wasn’t until 1914 that Mother’s Day became an official U.S. holiday, thanks to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honor her own mother’s legacy of care and community work.
Today, Mother’s Day is a time to recognize and celebrate the incredible role mothers and caregivers play in our lives. Whether you’re looking for meaningful ways to celebrate, planning a quiet afternoon with a good book or helping your kids craft a handmade card, your Library has you covered.
Explore books, crafts, events and more at your Library! Visit www.pbclibrary.org for free resources to make Mother’s Day special—whether you’re celebrating a mom, grandma, stepmom or any mother figure who’s made a difference. For Mother’s Day related activities look for the icon in this issue of Happenings.
A ruthless dissection of American life in the late 1960s, “Play It as It Lays” is set in a place beyond good and evil – literally in Hollywood, Las Vegas and the barren waste of the Mojave Desert, but figuratively in the landscape of an arid soul. Read the book and join the discussion and a gallery tour led by Norton Museum staff. E-books and e-audiobooks available on the cloudLibrary app. This is a free event. Space is limited. Register online starting Tue, Apr 01 at www.norton.org.
Unless noted, activities are on a first-come, first-served basis. For events requiring registration, please visit www.pbclibrary.org.

May in Palm Beach County brings more than sunshine and ocean breezes. It heralds a vibrant celebration that intertwines culture, history and identity: Haitian Heritage Month.
This annual celebration is more than just an acknowledgment of Haiti’s storied legacy. It’s an invitation to explore the heart of Haitian culture, a mosaic of resilience, artistry and pride. For the county’s HaitianAmerican community, the Library’s recognition is more than symbolic—it’s deeply personal. With events ranging from engaging film screenings to personal accounts as told through podcasts, the Library transforms into a cultural hub. Haitian authors take center stage during book discussions, offering a gateway into their rich literary traditions.
The Palm Beach County Library System embodies its commitment to education by fostering awareness through activities and other offerings. This approach, blending education with engagement, ensures members of all ages are drawn into the celebration.
Beyond the festivities lies the deeper significance of connection and affirmation. For HaitianAmericans, the events rekindle a bond with their roots, cultivating a shared sense of identity and pride. The Library’s focus on inclusion amplifies these voices, creating an atmosphere where the richness of Haitian heritage is both celebrated and appreciated.
As Palm Beach County grows increasingly diverse, Haitian Heritage Month serves as a beacon for cultural understanding and unity. The Library’s dedication inspires the community to embrace differences and build bridges. Whether through an impactful film or a heartfelt personal narrative, the Palm Beach County Library System reminds residents of the beauty in diversity—and the importance of celebrating it. Haitian Heritage Month stands as a testament to the unifying power of culture. (Look for the symbol for related activities).

Offerings range from interactive workshops on sumi ink painting to Hawaiian dance performances, along with screenings of films from across Asia and the Pacific Islands. These events are designed to both entertain and educate attendees about the rich traditions and modern contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
In addition to in-person activities, the Library provides extensive resources to further explore this heritage. Members can access books, films and digital media at all branches or online. The collection offers a wealth of knowledge on topics such as traditional folklore and contemporary issues. These materials make learning accessible from any location.
This initiative unites attendees of all ages and backgrounds, fostering cultural pride and mutual respect within the community. By offering events that celebrate diversity and inclusion, the Library plays a key role in strengthening connections across Palm Beach County. Through art, dance and storytelling, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month invites everyone to engage, learn and honor the contributions of these communities.
