Juneteenth:

Honoring Freedom and History

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their emancipation—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It stands as a powerful reminder of delayed justice, resilience and the ongoing pursuit of equity. Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the African American journey and celebrate cultural heritage, freedom and achievement.

The Palm Beach County Library System offers a wide range of resources to explore Black history, from historical archives and digital exhibits to book lists and educational programming. Patrons can access:

Curated book lists featuring African American authors, poets and historians for all ages.

Research tools and databases like Black Life in America and AfricanAmerican History Online, providing primary sources, newspaper articles and multimedia content.

Documentaries and films through streaming platforms like hoopla and CloudLibrary.

Events and programs throughout the year highlighting African American culture, literature and local history.

To explore these resources or get involved with upcoming programs, visit www.pbclibrary.org. Look for the icon in this month’s issue of Happenings to find events and programs that celebrate Juneteenth by learning, reflecting and honoring the stories that continue to shape our nation.

Mindful Activities Promote Mental Health

Self-care isn’t indulgent—it’s essential. Prioritizing time for yourself builds resilience, reduces stress and enhances mental well-being. When life feels overwhelming, even small acts of selfcare can make a big difference.

Libraries are stepping up as champions of mental health, offering activities that nurture the mind, body and spirit. Imagine swapping the chaos of the outside world for a serene yoga class or practicing tai chi to center your thoughts and restore balance. Meditation sessions provide a quiet retreat to reflect and reenergize, while calming crafts, such as painting or knitting, unlock creativity and promote relaxation.

These activities aren’t just about unwinding—they’re about creating habits that support mental health long-term. Social connections formed during Library workshops, coupled with the meditative rhythm of crafts or physical practices, help break the cycle of stress and isolation. Libraries also provide curated resources on self-care and mental health, empowering patrons with knowledge and tools to take charge of their well-being. Whether it’s a book on mindfulness, access to wellness apps or quiet spaces to recharge, libraries are more than just buildings—they’re beacons of hope and healing.

Self-care is mental healthcare. By exploring the Library’s diverse offerings, you’re embracing a proactive way to prioritize your mental health. The Library invites you to find your calm, express yourself and connect with a community that cares. After all, taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.

Celebrate Pride Month

June is Pride Month—a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community’s identity, history and resilience. Rooted in the 1969 Stonewall riots, which sparked a nationwide movement for LGBTQ+ rights, Pride Month has grown into a vibrant, month-long recognition of progress and pride. It gained federal recognition when President Bill Clinton declared June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month in 1999.

The Palm Beach County Library System has long served as a welcoming space where everyone can feel safe, valued and empowered to learn and grow. During Pride Month, PBCLS offers events, reading lists and featured materials that reflect a range of experiences and perspectives, recognizing LGBTQ+ stories.

By celebrating Pride Month, we help make space for awareness and acceptance. A wide range of LGBTQ+ materials—books, films and digital resources— are available through our catalog at www.pbclibrary.org. From memoirs, history and fiction, the Library provides curated collections that highlight the voices and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community. Looking to participate in Pride themed events? Just look for the icon in this month’s issue of Happenings.
