July is Parks and Recreation Month: A Time to Blend Leisure with Learning

Celebrate the season at Westgate Recreation Center, where the Palm Beach County Library System has installed its Library to Go book vending machine. Unveiled during a May 12, 2025, ribboncutting ceremony, the machine was relocated from the Robert Weisman Governmental Center lobby to a prominent spot inside the gymnasium at 3691 Oswego Ave., West Palm Beach. Here, amid nearby schools, bustling families and scenic park settings, reading meets recreation.

Library cardholders can borrow popular titles for all ages with a swipe of their card (just like using a conventional vending machine) and conveniently return materials the same way. This fresh approach invites visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll in the park, grab a good book and relax in the natural surroundings.

Library Director Douglas Crane expressed his excitement about the move: “We’re very excited to have the Library to Go be an extension of our services to the Westgate community.” This innovative partnership between Library services and Palm Beach County Parks & Recreation is reshaping where and how community members experience learning and leisure. It offers a promising glimpse into future collaborations between Parks and Libraries, expanding how communities interact with both recreation and reading.

Come enjoy the park and discover your next favorite read: the perfect way to embrace the spirit of Parks and Recreation Month.

The Harmony of Literacy: How Music Strengthens Reading Skills

Libraries are vibrant hubs of learning, creativity and community engagement. Among their many programs, music activities play a unique role in fostering literacy skills for learners of all ages.

Music naturally reinforces pronunciation, inflection, vocabulary and sentence structures. Because songs encourage repetition and interaction, they help participants absorb and solidify language principles effortlessly.

Palm Beach County Library System’s music-based events, from storytimes to rhythm actvities, support reading development in engaging ways. Simple folk songs, particularly those with direct syllabication (one syllable per beat), are effective tools for literacy growth. These timeless tunes carry the flow of language, helping participants connect spoken and written words.

Beyond early literacy, music stimulates cognitive pathways linked to memory and comprehension. It provides an alternative learning method for individuals with reading challenges, such as dyslexia, making language more accessible through rhythm and melody.

Library programs also bring families together through musical storytelling and interactive song sessions, reinforcing literacy. Across generations, music has remained a vital tool for passing down language and knowledge.

By integrating music into Library activities, learning becomes immersive and fun—turning melodies into stepping stones toward literacy success. After all, reading is even more exciting when set to a tune.

The Palm Beach County Library System offers a wealth of resources to explore the intersection of music and reading:

• Freegal Music: Allows users to stream and download music, providing access to a vast library of songs that can be used to support literacy through musical engagement.

• Hoopla: Offers a range of audiobooks and music albums, enabling users to experience stories and songs that can enhance language skills.

• Children’s Programs: The Library hosts various programs that integrate music and reading, fostering an environment where children can develop literacy skills through interactive and enjoyable activities.

5 Fascinating Facts About the American Flag

The Flag Has Had 27 Versions

Since 1777, the American flag has been officially redesigned 27 times to reflect the addition of new states. The current 50-star version has been in use since July 04, 1960, after Hawaii became the 50th state.

A Teen Designed the Current Flag

In 1958, 17-year-old Robert G. Heft designed a 50-star version of the flag as a school project—before Hawaii and Alaska were even states. His teacher gave him a B-, but the design was later chosen by President Eisenhower and became the official flag.

There’s a Flag on the Moon

When Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the moon in 1969, they planted an American flag on the lunar surface. Five more flags were planted during later missions—though sunlight has likely bleached them white.

Each Color Has Meaning

The flag’s red stands for valor and bravery, white for purity and innocence and blue for vigilance, perseverance and justice—symbolic traits chosen to reflect national ideals.

Flag Day Celebrates Its Adoption

Flag Day is observed on June 14 to honor the adoption of the first official U.S. flag in 1777 by the Second Continental Congress.

From its humble beginnings to its iconic presence on the moon, the American flag remains a powerful symbol of unity, history and resilience.
