The Library Comes to You

The Adult Literacy Project trains volunteer tutors to teach adult students to read, write or speak English. One-on-one instruction is free and confidential.

The Bookmobile travels the County and stops at more than 40 locations. Talking Books is a free service that provides Braille and recorded materials to anyone legally blind, visually impaired or physically handicapped in such a way that they cannot hold a book. Books-By-Mail offers materials for those who are homebound.

Florida’s Black History: Voices That Shaped Change Florida’s Black history is shaped by artists, musicians, educators, labor leaders and public servants whose work transformed communities across the state and influenced the nation. Their contributions reflect a lasting legacy of creativity, leadership and commitment to justice rooted in Florida’s past and present.

Arts & Literature

Zora Neale Hurston, raised in Eatonville (one of the first all Black incorporated towns in the United States) dedicated her life to preserving Black Southern culture. Through novels, essays and folklore, she documented the language and traditions of Black communities. Her work ensured their stories became part of American literature.

Augusta Savage, born in Green Cove Springs, rose to prominence as a sculptor during the Harlem Renaissance. Despite significant barriers, she gained national recognition for her powerful portrayals of Black life. She became a devoted teacher and mentor to younger artists, extending her influence well beyond her own work.

James Weldon Johnson, a Jacksonville native, was a writer and cultural leader whose impact spanned literature and civil rights. As the co writer of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and a leader of the NAACP, he used both art and advocacy to advance racial equality.

Music

Ray Charles, raised in Greenville, Florida, developed his musical foundation at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. By blending gospel, blues, jazz and rhythm and blues, he reshaped American music and became one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century.

Politics & Public Service

Mary McLeod Bethune was a pioneering educator and national leader who founded what is now Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach. Her work expanded educational opportunities for Black students and her role as a presidential advisor gave Black Americans a voice in national policy.

Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry broke barriers as the first Black woman elected to the Florida Legislature. She advocated for civil rights and education, helping to open doors for future generations of leaders.

Activism & Civil Rights

A. Philip Randolph was a leading labor and civil rights organizer. He founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and played a key role in planning the 1963 March on Washington. His work helped to link labor rights to the broader civil rights movement.

Harry T. Moore devoted his life to voting rights and the fight against racial violence in Florida. As an NAACP leader, his work came at great personal risk. His assassination in 1951 marked one of the earliest tragedies of the modern Civil Rights Movement.

These eight figures represent dome of the depth and influence of Florida’s Black history. Through creativity, leadership and activism, they helped shape Florida and the nation, leaving legacies that continue to inspire today.

Storytimes at the Library Storytimes are a cornerstone of early learning at the Library, offering families a welcoming space to read, sing and grow together. Designed for babies, toddlers and preschoolers, these sessions combine stories, music, movement and simple activities that build early literacy skills in a fun, low-pressure environment.

Each storytime supports language development, listening skills and social interaction, key foundations for school readiness. Caregivers pick up easy tips for reading and singing at home, while children learn to follow routines, recognize sounds and connect words with meaning. Just as important, storytimes help families build a reading habit early, showing that books are something to enjoy, not just something to study.

Librarians often share beloved picture books and readaloud favorites such as “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?,” “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom,” and “Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes,” titles that encourage participation, repetition and joyful interaction.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, marks the beginning of the lunar calendar and is celebrated across many Asian cultures.

Unlike Western New Year, which follows a fixed calendar date and often focuses on a single night of celebration, Lunar New Year unfolds over multiple days and emphasizes renewal, family, tradition and good fortune. Each year is associated with an animal of the zodiac, symbolizing different traits and hopes for the year ahead.

Throughout February, Palm Beach County Library System offers programs that bring these traditions to life through performance, storytelling and hands-on activities. Audiences can enjoy Chinese New Year Snapshot, a live cultural performance featuring traditional music and dance, presented at multiple branches. Families can also take part in Lunar New Year: How to Catch a Dragon, which pairs a themed storytime with a dragon puppet craft, or attend a Lunar New Year Celebration for children that includes stories, cultural facts and holiday crafts.

Library collections and digital resources offer more ways to explore the holiday. Picture books such as “Bringing In the New Year,” “My First Chinese New Year” and “Lunar New Year” introduce traditions through accessible storytelling. For deeper exploration, library databases and streaming platforms provide documentaries, music and cultural content connected to Lunar New Year celebrations around the world.

Did You Know?

Pleasant City is one of the oldest historically Black communities in Palm Beach County?

Established in 1905 and incorporated into West Palm Beach in 1912, Pleasant City covers a roughly 27-block area north of 15th Street, east of Dunbar Village and the Florida East Coast Railway, and west of Dixie Highway.

Pleasant City was created when African-American workers — many brought in to build the Florida East Coast Railroad, Royal Poinciana Hotel, and Whitehall (now the Flagler Museum) — were forced out of earlier living quarters on the island of Palm Beach. Land developer George Currie plotted the neighborhood and sold lots with pleasant-sounding street names to families who had been part of the community called the Styx.

Over decades, Pleasant City became a self-sufficient Black community with its own churches, businesses, civic organizations, and an elementary school that opened in 1914. St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded in 1900, began in Pleasant City before relocating as the community grew.

While many historic buildings have been lost to redevelopment, efforts by residents and descendants including the Pleasant City Family Reunion Committee and Heritage Gallery preserve the neighborhood’s history and honor the pioneers who helped shape West Palm Beach.

Pleasant City stands as a living link to the labor, resilience, and cultural contributions of Black Americans in Palm Beach County’s early development.
