Embracing the Spirit of Winter Holidays

The winter holiday season is a time of joy, reflection and cultural celebration. It brings friends and families together to honor their traditions and create lasting memories. As an inclusive and educational space, the Library plays a crucial role in fostering this spirit of unity by embracing a variety of winter holidays such as Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas, Kwanzaa and the New Year. The Library’s celebration of these diverse holidays not only promotes cultural awareness, but also reinforces its role as a welcoming community hub.

Winter Solstice, celebrated on December 21, marks the shortest day and longest night of the year. This astronomical event has been honored by various cultures throughout history as a time of renewal and rebirth. Those who celebrate observe the natural world, highlight the connection between human traditions and the cycles of nature. Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is celebrated for eight nights and commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. By providing cultural educational experiences, the Library creates an opportunity for participants to learn about Jewish history, values and traditions. This helps foster deeper understanding and appreciation of this Jewish holiday. This year, Hanukkah is celebrated from the evening of Wed, Dec 25, 2024 – Thu, Jan 02, 2025

Christmas, celebrated on December 25, is a time filled with joyful customs such as gift-giving, tree decorating and festive meals. It embodies the spirit of generosity, togetherness and community. The Library creates an atmosphere that brings the community together while also providing opportunities to learn about the cultural significance of Christmas traditions among various people.

Kwanzaa, celebrated from December 26 to January 01, honors African-American culture and heritage. It emphasizes principles like unity, self-determination and collective work. Kwanzaa events provide a platform for African-American voices and traditions, encouraging participants to explore the rich history and contributions of the African diaspora.

Finally, welcoming the New Year provides an opportunity for reflection and looking forward to the future. Cultural celebrations from around the world help members start the year with a sense of community and purpose. By engaging in these celebrations, the Library creates a sense of unity, allowing everyone to partake in the holiday cheer regardless of their personal beliefs. Through diverse programming, the Library encourages dialogue, respect and learning, helping to build a more cohesive and informed community. This shared cultural experience strengthens our bonds and enriches our lives. It creates a sense of belonging, making the Library a true hub of enlightenment and festivity during the holiday season.

To deepen understanding and appreciation of these holidays, scan the QR codes linking to the Gale Compendium. It contains articles and information about the history, customs and significance of each celebration. This resource provides valuable insights and detailed information that enhance the educational experience, supporting the Library’s mission to connect communities, inspire though and enrich lives.

AIDS Memorial Quilt Viewing

All day, Sun, Dec 01 - Sat, Dec 14

Considered the largest community arts project in history, the AIDS Memorial Quilt helps us remember the unique lives and stories of those we’ve lost to HIV/AIDS.

“Presidents & Their First Ladies, Dramatically Speaking: John Quincy and Louisa Adams”

“Presidents and Their First Ladies, Dramatically Speaking” is the creation of the veteran acting and writing team of husband and wife, William and Sue Wills. After 20 years of operating their own theatrical company in the resort of Ocean City, MD, the couple is now in their 28th year of bringing to life the stories of 36 different Presidential couples. Amazingly, the Wills have appeared together on stage over 9,400 times and counting. They are not “impersonators,” but hope that their costumes, dialects and demeanors will help recreate these historical characters.

Through their “Presidents and First Ladies” program, William and Sue aim to present the personal stories of our nation’s first couples. By doing so, they hope to bring these historical figures to life as more than just names in history books.
