Celebrated annually on August 23, this day encourages everyone to unashamly celebrate their nerd passions: be it coding, comic collecting, board gaming, sci-fi or tech tinkering.
It originated from tech influencer Beth Z (“Your Nerdy Best Friend”), with the date tied to the first-ever Twitter hashtag, introduced in 2007 by Chris Messina.
Why Nerding Out Is Great
Embracing nerd culture promotes curiosity, lifelong learning and creativity. It also builds community as people bond over shared passions and peculiar interests.
How to Celebrate
The Library = Nerd HQ
The Library is your perfect accomplice for nerdy celebration with free or low-cost resources:
1. e-Books, Comics & Audiobooks
Dive into fandoms via platforms like hoopla and CloudLibrary. Access fantasy epics, graphic novels, sci-fi sagas and more no matter your nerd niche.
2. Tabletop RPGs & Gaming Events
Join Dungeons & Dragons or RPG groups hosted by the Library or borrow rulebooks to start your own campaigns.
3. Tech Workshops & Makerspaces
Use 3D printers, sewing machines, vinyl cutters and coding classes available through the CreationStation and MakerSpace.
4. Crafts, Cosplay & Fandom Meetups
Participate in fandom-themed crafts, meetups (like cosplay), trivia nights and seasonal events: look for Comic Book Day or Star Wars Reads Month on the Library’s event calendar.
5. STEM Kits & Science Resources
Check out tools like Raspberry Pi kits or access scientific databases and programming tutorials to fuel your inner inventor.
Check out our fun "nerdy" activities, look for the icon
Host a nerd-themed gathering: stream a favorite sci-fi show in a meeting room or play board games with friends. Attend workshops: Learn coding basics, 3D printing or crafting cosplay gear.
Share your passion: Post photos or reviews of your Library finds on social media using #FindYourInnerNerdDay.
Start your own journey: Whether it's coding, comics, science experiments or cosplay, the Library has the tools and support to get started.
A celebration of all things geeky, quirky and passionate! Live long and nerd on!
DiD you know?
Spider-Man is a superhero character created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. He first appeared in the comic book Amazing Fantasy #15, in August, 1962. Spider-Man is the first teenage superhero to not be a sidekick of an adult hero.
Fan favorite villain, Venom originally was a fan creation that was bought by Marvel for $220. Venom was originally conceived as fan fiction!
Spider-Man is President Barack Obama’s favorite superhero.
The famous line, "With great power comes great responsibility," was not originally spoken by Uncle Ben in the comics. It first appeared in the narration of Amazing Fantasy #15, acting as a moral lesson to the reader. It has since become synonymous with Spider-Man's character, representing the core of his heroism.
The reason Spider-Man is spelled with a hyphen is because Spidey creator and all-round legend Stan Lee didn't want people to get confused with Superman.
Miles Morales (Ultimate Universe) is the dynamic successor to Peter Parker as Spider-Man and first appeared in issue 4 of Ultimate Fallout in 2011.
The Ultimate Spider-Man is now part of the Marvel Universe (the regular 616 universe) since the multiverse shattering event Secret Wars. Molecule Man recreated the entire 616 Marvel Universe with Miles Morales Spider-Man and his immediate family.
Miles Morales has different powers than Peter Parker. He has the ability to activate a camouflage that would hide his presence from enemies, enhanced spider-sense and bioelectric charges he calls “venom blasts.”
Unlike the traditional Spidey suit, Miles’ costume was not homemade like Peter Parker's iconic red and blue suit. Instead was given to him by S.H.I.E.L.D.

Women’s Equality Day
On August 26, we recognize Women’s Equality Day, a commemoration of the 19th Amendment, which secured women’s right to vote. But this date is more than a historical milestone; it's a call to action. This is a time to reflect on how far women have come and how far they still have to go.
In Palm Beach County, the importance of this day echoes across generations. From the early suffragists who demanded a voice at the ballot box to the women leading change in our local communities today. The fight for equality is ongoing and deeply local.
The Palm Beach County Library System plays a vital role in supporting that progress. We provide access to knowledge that empowers women, fosters critical thinking and nurtures leadership. Whether it’s resources for entrepreneurs, programs that elevate women authors or spaces where stories and voices can be shared freely, our Libraries champion access for all. Women’s Equality Day isn’t just about the past. It’s about recognizing the value of every girl’s curiosity, every woman’s ambition and every community’s need for shared knowledge.
So this August, let’s celebrate by learning, reflecting and recommitting to equality. Visit your local branch and discover the stories of trailblazing women. Remember, everyone has a chapter to write in the story of progress.
