How to Get on the Water

Summer 2026

Deadly rays, total vacuum, no pizza delivery … will you survive living in space? This summer, explore the science of how life—human or extraterrestrial—might breathe, eat, and, just maybe, stay alive in the extreme conditions beyond Earth.

Welcome to the Summer issue of Local Getaways Express — your guide to making the most of the season right here in the Bay Area and beyond. This summer, the region comes alive with energy, adventure and celebration as the excitement of World Cup soccer takes over the Bay Area. Even if you don’t have a ticket to the big matches, there are countless ways to join the fun with watch parties, cultural events and lively fan experiences happening throughout the region.
And when you’re ready to explore beyond the crowds, unforgettable escapes are just a short drive away. From the rolling vineyards and charming downtown of San Ramon to the outdoor beauty of Tuolumne County, summer day trips offer the perfect reset. Berkeley continues to buzz with incredible arts, food and culture, Marin has Mt. Tam for a memorable experience and San Francisco’s chef’s table experiences are redefining dining for adventurous food lovers.
For those drawn to the water, this issue is filled with inspiration — from kayaking and sailing to luxury yacht charters and waterfront escapes. Wherever summer takes you, we hope these pages inspire your next local adventure.

Cavallo Point’s Chef Concierge on how to spend summer in Sausalito.
Best Fourth of July activities?
Sausalito hosts a great annual parade. I also suggest the piglet races at the Marin County Fair. At night, there are fireworks in Sausalito, and it’s a lot easier to navigate than the one in SF.

“Sausalito is truly one big art fair.”
Best family-friend activities?
Muir Woods is an option if you’re up for a hike or a walk. There’s also a good hiking loop starting at the Mt. Tam Pantoll ranger station. You can also take a ferry from Tiburon to Angel Island, or even just to-and-from San Francisco.
Where to see local art?
Sausalito is truly one big art fair. The Sausalito Center for the Arts is terrific. I also highly recommend a visit to Heath Ceramics followed by caviar and champagne at The Bump Bar.
Where to eat?
I like Cultivar. It’s Californian cuisine with a lot of shared plates and a wine-centered menu. For a meal with a view, there’s Joinery for families. I also like Fish. a lot and Le Garage for brunch, and Barrel House has an outdoor deck.

Four Seasons Napa Valley’s Chef Concierge on how to spend the summer in Wine Country.
Summer family activities?
Take an African Safari at Safari West for a brush with giraffes, zebras, and lemurs. You can also explore a medieval castle by taking a tour of Calistoga’s Castello di Amorosa.
“Calistoga stays true to its tinytown charm.”
St. Helena’s Under-Study opened last year. It’s a fabulous concept with delicious breakfast bites and unique takes on traditional snacks and goodies. They also offer a range of hands-on cooking and mixology classes.
Enjoy breath-taking views with a hike at Robert Louis Stevenson State Park before you head to Auro for a romantic dinner.
Best Fourth of July activities?
During the day, Calistoga stays true to their tiny town charm with an annual Fourth of July parade that fills the streets. Once the sun goes down, downtown Napa offers an eco-friendly drone show featuring 400 drones!
My personal favorite is the Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery. They have an indoor/ outdoor bar area with refreshing seasonal cocktails and the best wings in town!
Downtown Napa is always my favorite area to recommend for shopping. Between Oxbow Public Market and the boutiques along First Street, guests will find some of the most premier shopping in the valley.
