St. Regis San Francisco’s chief concierge, Daniel Rey, shares the city’s hidden gems and summer sights.
Best summer activities in San Francisco?
Summer is a time meant to be spent outdoors. And San Francisco offers no shortage of activities. Consider a hike along our Lands End Trail or in our Presidio, both offering a nature getaway within our city limits. A paddle boat on Blue Heron Lake in Golden Gate Park offers both exercise and a sense of serenity. And there is no better way to take in the crisp San Francisco air than on one of the ever popular boat tours.
Best family-friendly summer activities?
Consider renting bikes and biking along our waterfront toward the Golden Gate Bridge. There are many interesting spots along the way, including a wave-activated acoustic sculpture called the Wave Organ, the beautiful Marina Green and the open park along the Presidio Tunnel Tops. Grab a treat at the Warming Hut as you gaze at the bridge and the bay. If biking is not your thing, consider renting a GoCar, which offers an automated and GPS guided tour.
Best place to get a seasonal or iconic drink?
I must give props to our own St. Regis Bar and our Golden Gate Mary. As the story goes, Mr. Fernand Petiot created the
Bloody Mary as a bartender in Paris. In 1934, Mr. Petiot joined the St. Regis in New York, where he introduced his creation. Now, every St. Regis offers a signature version. The Golden Gate Mary is inspired by our famous bridge and pairs both carrot and tomato juices in its recipe.
Suggestions for a romantic evening?
I would hire a car and driver. The driver would be both guide and photographer. First stop, a picture in front of Cupid’s Span, a 70-foot sculpture dedicated to amore. Then a romantic dinner with a view of the bay followed by a drink at the Top of the Mark. And there is no better way to wrap up the evening than with a toast atop the Marin Headlands overlooking the city and Golden Gate Bridge.
Daniel began his career as a concierge at the Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco. After 16 years, he was honored to join the team at the St. Regis as chief concierge. Since 2019, Daniel has served on the Board of Directors for the esteemed concierge organization, Les Clefs d’Or, USA.

Memorable meals require more than a delicious recipe. While the Bay Area is host to a smorgasbord of exceptional eateries, only a select few offer the intimate privilege of a front-row seat to the chefs working to prepare your meal.
Dining at a chef’s table allows guests the rare chance to witness raw ingredients become unforgettable feasts, and occasionally, pay respects to these amazing cooks face to face. Some of these options may skew closer to “counter” than “table” in a city tight on square footage, but all deliver where it matters most.

Wines rooted in legendary craftsmanship, inspiring art installations, and the perfect spot to unwind — there’s so much more to wine tasting at Louis M. Martini Winery.
Harvest Inn’s concierge, Maria D’Ambrosio, shares the best sights and delights waiting for you in Wine Country this summer.
Favorite summer activities in Wine Country?
In the summer months we are getting ready for a new harvest season. The vineyards are so beautiful, and the valley is bustling. At Harvest Inn, it’s as if you are in Lake Tahoe, but on a vineyard. The smell of 320 redwood trees and views of the vineyard at sunset are heavenly. St. Helena Farmers Market on Friday mornings is a favorite walk, coupled with a wine and caviar brunch at Davies Vineyards. At night, heading to Angele Restaurant then doing a sunset gondola ride on the river has proven to be truly a magical and enchanted evening.
Best family-friendly summer activities in the area?
My family loves to start many of our summer days in Wine Country with the Bay Area’s best wetlands paddle with Napa Valley Paddle. It is here where wild nature meets the Carneros vineyards and the river comes alive. Enjoy a picnic afterwards from the famous Fatted Calf at their river cottage. Harvest Inn’s family pool is also a great place to relax and has the best poolside menu complete with Chef’s famous Korean chicken tenders. In the evening, having an outdoor dinner at Farmstead is a favorite of locals with their kiddos. It is beautiful and upbeat, with a great kid’s menu!
New or under the radar spots in Wine Country that can’t be missed?
The newly remodeled Louis M. Martini Winery boasts a few amazing experiences that are not to be missed, like their food and wine pairing with five stunning cabernets from different appellations. The legendary Monica Steves’ newest wine salon, Studio 1299A, offers a special curated experience
with underground wineries and your musical and wine preferences in an alleyway in historic downtown St. Helena. From there, head to Woodhouse Chocolate. (It is like a jewelry store for chocolate!)
Favorite picnic spots?
Do a tasting and picnic after at these lovely wineries: Frank Family Vineyards, Tres Sabores and Rombauer Vineyards. All lovely wines with stunning gardens and hospitality.
Suggestions for a romantic getaway?
Begin your getaway by settling into a vineyard-view room at the Harvest Inn, where Wine Country’s charm surrounds you. Then make your way to Promise Wine, where a captivating hostess will lead you through a heartfelt story of love told through each pour. Savor The Promise, feel The Joy, embrace The Gratitude and fall for The Love — their wines. In the evening, indulge in a private tomahawk steak dinner for two, set intimately among the vines and beneath the stars for a perfect ending back at the Inn.
Maria D’Ambrosio has been in the hospitality business and California all her life. She got started working in wine at Saddleback Cellars, and opening wineries was her passion for decades. Today she is a concierge at Harvest Inn in St. Helena, where she loves seeing the looks on guests’ faces after a memorable experience.
The Crosstown trail is just what it sounds like — a trail that spans 17 miles diagonally through San Francisco. If you’re a traveler who likes to really experience the city you’re visiting, or an avid hiker that doesn’t mind 2,000 feet elevation gain and temperature fluctuations of up to 30 degrees, this route is a great way to experience San Francisco’s history and stunning spectacles. You can tackle the whole trail, or just choose segments (out of five total), but the task isn’t as daunting as it seems — San Francisco is relatively small, at just 7 miles by 7 miles.
You’ll start at Sunrise Point Pier before finding your way through Little Hollywood, the “Lombard of walking paths” and the lively McLaren Park. Then you’ll get to explore 60 acres of restored natural habitat in Glen Canyon Park have the chance to see the site of America’s first dynamite factory. Then, you’ll meander through Forest Hill and experience the masterpieces that are the secret tiled staircases. Enjoy a stroll across
Blue Heron Lake’s stone bridge en route to a date with the park’s radiant Rose Garden. And for a grand finale, experience SF’s natural glory with sights of the sand dunes, Baker Beach and jaw-dropping Sutro Bath ruins at the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
Want double the wonderment? Sibling to the Crosstown Trail is the 15-mile Double Cross Trail, with worthwhile stops of its own. For this route, you’ll start south of the San Francisco Zoo before later seeing Lake Merced, then Pine Lake: two of the three natural freshwater lakes found in all of SF. Then the West Portal neighborhood takes the spotlight, before you you’re able to absorb the sights of the vista points at Twin Peaks, Tank Hill and Buena Vista Park. Then you get to play tourist, with popular photo ops at the Painted Ladies, Chinatown’s Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, the Transamerica Pyramid and Coit Tower, among other stops.
