Local Getaways Express - Fall 2025

Page 1

SAN FRANCISCO | MARIN | NAPA | SONOMA FALL 2025

SURPRISE YOURSELF. THURSDAYS AFTER DARK.

Meet us at Pier 15. Explore science, art, and perception with 70 0+ interactive exhibits. Discover world-opening programs, grab a drink, and get inquisitive.

Welcome

Welcome to the Fall Issue of Local Getaways Express!

The air is crisp (unless we are in our Indian Summer), the colors are rich and the calendar is packed with events. September kicks off with a flurry of festivals — from the Autumn Moon Festival to the Sausalito Art Festival, the indulgent Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival and Oktoberfest celebrations. If you’re lucky enough to visit in October (10–12), you’ll hear the unmistakable roar above — Fleet Week is here! And when Halloween rolls around, why not explore some of our storied homes with a spooky side, like the legendary Winchester Mystery House (well worth the trip to South Bay)?

By November, the Bay Area begins to sparkle. Lights twinkle in the streets, holiday trees rise in plazas and festive decorations transform the region into a winter wonderland — well, minus the snow, of course.

Step outside San Francisco, and your adventures continue. Head north to Marin County and Wine Country, or cross the Bay to Berkeley for a CAL football game, world-class dining, winery tours or a rejuvenating mud bath. Feeling more outdoorsy? A hike in Marin with breathtaking views from Mt. Tam. If it’s foggy, head up to West Point Inn, you’ll be above the fog with the most unforgettable views — it will stay with you forever.

Whether you’re visiting or enjoying a staycation, the Bay Area offers something unforgettable year-round. Browse our recommendations, chat with your concierge for insider tips and if you’re out exploring, download our Hello! Marin app and check out the Local Getaways tile for even more ideas. Experiences are waiting!

Cheers,

In the Know

America’s First Concierge, the Fairmont’s Tom Wolfe, on his favorite Fall activities in San Francisco

Why is fall a good time to visit SF?

Summer is over, which means fewer crowds, more room for family activities and weather that will be neither too hot nor too cold. Our summers often feel like winter, whereas our fall has a lot more beautiful days.

Unique fall events around SF?

Don’t miss the Autumn Moon Festival in Chinatown, and make sure to sample the mooncakes. Celebrate the air, land and sea during Fleet Week in October; the week’s highlight is the Blue Angels show with planes that fly over the city and the bay. Try San Francisco’s best restaurants during Restaurant Week in November.

Where to get an iconic or seasonal drink?

Stop in at The Buena Vista Cafe for an Irish coffee, it’s the first place in the U.S. where they started serving them. Or, stop the Top of the Mark at the Mark Hopkins Hotel for a classic martini and unparalleled views. My third suggestion is The Redwood Room in the Clift Hotel, featuring art deco architecture, an incredible bar made of redwood, great cocktails and live music.

Suggestions for nightlife and evening entertainment?

Catch some cool jazz at Keys Jazz Bistro or a live show at Club Fugazi, which often features productions based on SF traditions and folklore. There are always a number of productions playing in town at one of our three major theatres: the Orpheum, Curran or Golden Gate.

Accessible activities for different ages and abilities?

SF is one of the most accessible cities in the country. May we suggest the Ferry Building for all things culinary, or PIER 39 for a variety of activities. For younger folk, The Exploratorium is both accessible and family friendly. Golden Gate Park is full of activities; my favorites are the Japanese Tea Garden (I lived in Japan for 5 years!) and the California Academy of Sciences. The whole family will love Muir Woods in nearby Marin County for its towering redwoods and natural beauty.

Tom Wolfe is the chief concierge at Fairmont San Francisco, who also has the distinguished honor of being the first concierge in the United States — yes, you read that right, the first. He joined the historic Fairmont San Francisco on Nob Hill in 1974, and after some stints at other international hotels, Wolfe is going strong at 81 years old and still serving the guests of the Fairmont. His birthday falls on April 4, 1944. (4.4.44).

Spotlight

Marin Outdoors in a Day: Hikes, Bites and High-Flying Sights

Just beyond the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin County has plenty of gems of its own that are worth exploring when you’re in the Bay Area. With a vivacious foodie scene, prominent historical spots and sprawling natural beauty, we recommend dipping into it all. Start your day with a visit to Shoreline Coffee Shop in Mill Valley, where you’ll get the vintage, small-town diner feel that mixes Mexican with traditional breakfast staples using sustainable, local and organic ingredients.

Once fueled, lace up your boots for the iconic Dipsea Trail, a hike that stretches from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach and promises extraordinary views along the way. You also won’t want to miss Mill Valley’s Muir Woods National Monument, which is home to a majestic, towering forest of coastal old growth redwoods that will dwarf all members of your party beyond any trees that you’re probably used to.

After tackling those trails, treat yourself to a slice at PizzaHacker @ The Junction, also in Mill Valley and with, arguably, the best outdoor seating in Marin. And, brews will be easy to pair with your pie since this pizza spot shares a footprint with The Junction Beer Garden. Then take your sightseeing up a notch (literally) with an excursion via Seaplane Adventures, which will give you a bird’s eye view of many Bay Area icons like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and even a couple of the spots you might have explored on the ground earlier.

Need some pampering after a long day out? Head to Sausalito where you can slip into relaxation mode at Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa for treatments like their signature sleep massage or the CBD nourishing scrub. Finish your day with a delicious Italian feast downtown at Poggio Trattoria, which is also conveniently located next door to the spa.

Specialist and Lead Concierge at Alila Napa Valley, on Fabulous Fall Finds in the Wine Country

Favorite fall activities in Wine Country?

Seasonal highlights include grape stomping, guided crush pad tours and intimate harvest celebrations hosted by select wineries. One special experience I like is Fantesca Estate & Winery’s hands-on harvest celebration. This immersive opportunity offers a rare chance to meet the proprietors and winemakers, learn about the winemaking process firsthand and become part of the year’s vintage in a memorable way.

New or under-the-radar spots in Wine Country that can’t be missed?

The much anticipated Under-Study in St. Helena is a dynamic culinary playground and marketplace curated by the esteemed team behind Michelin-starred Press Restaurant Located adjacent to the newly expanded Napa Valley Museum of Arts & Culture (The MAC), it’s an open-format establishment that blends a modern café, patisserie, artisan seafood and butcher counter, wine boutique and exhibition kitchen. My personal favorite? The caviar-topped lobster corn dogs.

Best place to get a seasonal or iconic drink?

Without a doubt, the iconic Mexico City Margarita at Salvia Terrace Bar at Alila Napa Valley. It’s a favorite among Napa locals and guests alike, with an elevated take on a classic crafted with premium tequila, fresh lemon juice and orange liqueur. It’s crowned with an airy salted lime foam which adds a luxurious, modern edge, evoking the dynamic spirit of Mexico City’s cocktail culture.

Best places for fall-inspired dining?

Located in a charming cottage in downtown St. Helena, Charlie’s Napa Valley offers a relaxed yet refined dining experience rooted in seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Led by Chef Elliot Bell and named after his son, the menu evolves with the region’s bounty. I especially love to visit during truffle season and a personal favorite off their Late Night Menu: Fried Chicken with Fancy Ranch and Regis Ova Ossetra caviar, followed by the classic Campfire Pie.

Your suggestions for a romantic getaway in the area?

My husband and I retreat to Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary in Sonoma County. Known for its tranquil setting and unique offerings, we love starting with the spa’s signature cedar enzyme bath for two, followed by a side-by-side massage that melts away every ounce of tension. Afterward, we stroll through the peaceful zen meditation garden, a serene, otherworldly space that invites deep relaxation and quiet connection. To cap off the day, we head north to Cyrus in Geyserville to toast at the Bubbles Lounge, a chic Champagne haven.

Sip & Spin: Sonoma Group Getaway

Capitalize on your stay in the valley with the luxe MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa, which was somewhat recently revamped in a $25 million transformation that makes it worth the price tag. Its premium, near-Sonoma location will make the rest of your visit convenient as well.

Sonoma Valley Pedal Assist Bike Tour. They’ll serve lunch, as these tours depart around 9:30 a.m. and last 5–6 hours — regular bikes are available as well for those looking to get a bit of extra exercise in. A day spent pedalling will help you see the beauty of the valley, but sightseeing afterwards is still a must to hit other local historical faves. Pay a visit to Sonoma State Historic Park and Sonoma Plaza, which happens to be California’s largest town square with lush grass, surrounding historic architecture and shops and a monument. Fight off the afternoon lull with a sugar rush from Sweet Scoops Homemade Ice Cream, with small batch, daily-changing flavors.

Two equally worthwhile dinner options to follow up are Valley Bar & Bottle and Glen Ellen Star — the first tends to elicit a more causal patio dining experience, while the second has MichelinBib-Gourmand awarded food and ambience. Or, grab some food at Wit & Wisdom, the onsite restaurant at The Lodge at Sonoma with delicious bites like lobster pot pie and woodfired s’mores souffle.

Day two will be a more relaxing, but still fun-filled experience. Wake up early for an early-morning hot air balloon ride, a perfectly picturesque bucket list item with panoramic views of the stunning Napa and Sonoma regions. Follow up with brunch — Layla at MacArthur Place is a safe bet with a menu inspired by Mediterranean cuisine, and is conveniently located back at your hotel where you can relax at the spa for the rest of the day.
