“R: James Doss and I have been collaborating on a sci-fi world building project for a while now. How would you describe your background?

J: What really drew my interest as a kid were the old VHS tapes my dad had of the history of the Apollo program; When I was a little older, I started getting into science fiction. Currently I’m studying aerospace engineering at University of Maryland and just this semester I began teaching a class with the Arts department about hard surface design and using real world engineering principles when creating concept art.

R: How do you approach Farfield when you sit down to work on new material? Do you start with an engineering problem?

J: I start off by coming up with a one sentence description. e.g. “high aerial speed passenger transport”. Then I narrow down more characteristics, e.g. ‘supersonic’, ‘low-cost’. Eventually, I go on to the major aesthetic qualities I want a design to have and how I want it to look, e.g. ‘rugged’ and ‘industrial’. All of these ideas contribute to a single image in my mind and then I go make some thumbnail sketches of it and pick the ones I like best to refine into a final product. In general my process for creating designs begins narratively by identifying the need they fill in the world, then the engineering principles they use to address it. Then you write down what you have and create patches for the gaps that don’t make sense.

R: As an architecture student, my technical education doesn’t have much overlap with yours — however the design approach you describe is nearly identical. How does cross-disciplinary collaboration affect the way you work?

J: For one there are certain things I do now out of force of habit since we started working on Farfield that I wouldn’t have even thought of doing previously. I think it forces me to go back to first principles for a lot of things. There are usually certain assumptions I begin to make when I design something by myself - “this can only be done like so” etc. but most of the time those are the artifacts of poor thinking rather than a physical reality.

R: Do you have any closing comments, or advice to anyone looking to delve into world-building and speculative design?

J: My single biggest piece of advice when delving into world-building is to learn more about the world around you. The universe is crazier and stranger than you would even possibly begin to imagine. Other than that, stick with it - worlds weren’t built in a day!

In recent years, my artwork has analyzed how image curation, particularly in the context of family photos, claims personal histories while also blurring the line between reality and fiction.

How much of our history and/or memory has been curated at best or completely falsified at worst? Can this contextualization of person-hood be a violent act? Or rather, is it the gift of cathecting life by means of storytelling?

This painting has been a more narrow study within this context, focusing specifically on the eerie almost intangible quality of femininity, and how women before me have occupied that role.

I am trying to understand the ways in which motherhood, domesticity, and femininity have shaped my familial history; perhaps looking for answers to my own crises of identity, but more so trying to empathize with this form that is just as difficult to actualize as it is to define.

Losing a big part of yourself, a friend, a parent, a sibling is very hard and yet makes you who you are.

There starts a battle between your consciousness and body. The body wants to forget this extensive trauma and delete everything about the person from your thoughts and dreams.

On the other hand, consciousness wants to relive the memories and remember the good times.

With this in mind, Lucid Dream tries to express my loved one while showing how unrecognizable she has become for my body.

SYNONYM is a world I built where people look like me and are essentially clones of each other. I want to reflect this through my models who were hand casted to visually morph in and out of the idea of me.

I want people to question if the models really look like me or if it is just another similar Asian boy. I was inspired by the imagery of space and the interpretation of the future which really drove the design and feeling of this collection.

Growing up in a small suburban town, the population was predominantly white. I was the only Asian in my neighborhood, the only Asian in my high school, the only Asian in the shops I shopped at and places I ate at. Moving to Flushing, Queens, became a culture shock in my own

culture. I suddenly blended in and moved with a crowd of my own people. I still felt distant. The sceneries around me were unfamiliar but gave me deja vu.

In an attempt to build herself a home, Italian born and raised Lina Bo Bardi realized an architectural statement that stands firm as depiction of her cultural beliefs.

Lina emigrated from Italy in 1946 after Mussolini’s rule came to an end, in search of new potential, without the post-war European destructions.

As a Brazilian immigrant, Lina refused to surrender to the European trends of abstract modernism, a la Bauhaus, she was taught by the Italian classics. Instead she became infatuated with South American culture, shifting her designs towards sentimental or vernacular folkloric.

By the time of her death, Lina Bo Bardi considered herself more Brazilian than she was ever Italian to begin with. Her designs became a perfect merge between modernism, regionalism and vernacular: a true DYNAMIC REGIONALISM.

Ancient Western civilizations build permanently. With stone, they leave behind spectacular ruins, yet their civilization failed to continue.

Ancient Eastern civilizations build temporarily. With timber, they celebrate decay and change. Most of their monuments vanished, but their culture and languages has continued till today.

Not one way of living is better, it is the difference of culture and identity that we should celebrate in the present world.

Within the ruins of Rome, I found myself attracted to the moss growing in the ruins. Gone the civilization, came the new occupants of their ruins. Even the greatest monuments could not escape the fate of being encroached by nature; gone the white marble now being cladded with lichens and moss.

Lichen systems; moss colonies; weed blossoms. These that we often forget are trying to remind us something. Massiveness often blind us from discovering alternative values in the miniature. When I see these islands of moss on monuments, I know that what has lasted through time, is not the ones with power, but the beautiful “minorities”.

My project is an exploration of environment and land: from the first people that inhabited it, to the architects that set ground-breaking trends, to our contemporary selves, the city of New York in particular has suffered great transformations.

The most brilliant minds the world has seen left a dent here through paintings, buildings, museums, writing, film, fashion and scientific innovation.

With such precedents, how do we respond to this city’s past and how will we influence its future? How will we build other cities?

“ “Q: What is “ निवास(Niwas)” and what is it different from “Residence” in English.

A: Literal translations often loses the essence. In this context of a new birthplace of the carbon economy, “ निवास(Niwas)” in Hindi means housing the possibilities of carbon-led sustainable development. It is not a stagnant residency, rather a constant breathing project that fuels the carbon age.

Q: Is this purely scientific driven? How do you balance experiential and pragmatic approaches.

A: To talk about carbon and its potential, we also dive deep into visualizing how carbon would look, feel and react. We are visual people and the aesthetic of carbon excites us to imagine spaces that hold associative value with people.

Q: Is this project a critique?

A: We believe that to replenish the planetary changes that have already occurred, the architectural discourse needs to extensively adopt an altered approach to the carbon form. Hence, this project is a critique on how we could achieve a new carbon economy.

Carbon निवास aims to domesticate the idea of carbon capture. It’s a climate literacyled installation that wraps people around an installation that sequesters atmospheric carbon by sensing human movement. The prototype addresses interaction, revelation, a form that combines organic and rectilinear architectonics.

“Q: How are infinite modules are powerful? Infinite modules suggest that simple geometries can multiply & transform into any form. In this particular drawing, the functions of the modules are not specifies, providing us freedom for the imagination of what they can become. The demolition of the capsule towers in Tokyo just began, so I guess it is more sustainable for modules to flexibly adapt to the time and needs of their respective societies.

Q: What is your opinion on “supertalls”? I like tall structures because I think they give identity to a place by shaping the skyline, but the critique of “supertalls” today especially in NYC is more about their reflection of discrepancies between social classes. Supertall itself is not a negative typology.

An endless field of vertical structures gently stand on a deserted ground, each with unique expressions while composed of the same modules. The growth of modules generate infinite combinations and flexibility in form and function. Ambiguous in purpose, the towers expand beyond the horizon, as one’s imagination is limitless.

“The most permanent effect of the pandemic has been a new culture of working from home. People are increasingly preferring to work from home, but at the same time experienced the loss of focus that comes with blending domestic and productive spaces.

Nested Commutes creates a solution for young professionals that aims to separate the home & office through a simulated commute. The traditional commute to an office offers a certain sensory experience that we lose when working from home. The familiar sights of walking to the train station, the smell of the air as you pass by coffee shops, and the passing interactions with other pedestrians define the transient experience that separates work from leisure.

A nested ramp reinterprets that experience as a serial progression of spaces between a cluster of 4 apartment units and their corresponding offices.

“Habitation is a subject inextricably interwoven with the city. The 20th century reconsideration of housing had to do with “the normalizing of the residential environment” and began as a reaction against the congestion and squalor of the industrial city.

In New York City, early legislation focused on public health, safety, and fire protection and resulted in the institutionalizing of minimum standards which in turn promoted a larger set of social reforms aimed at improving the quality of urban life.

The thing I missed most over quarantine was sitting and enjoying the ambiance in different coffee shops around the city. Incredibly unique I know (please clap). So I suppose it makes sense that the first thing I did once the world started spinning was spend as much time as I could with an overpriced cappuccino in hand. Though after a while, I felt a bit guilty about just sitting there looking at the people and scenery, so I picked up a sketchbook and put pen to page. I don’t claim to have much affinity for sketching, but here are a handful that came from my cafe-hopping weekends.

Through these sketches, I wanted to capture the way light interacted with the various interventions on the site.

To AURA, dancing is a form of communication between the dancers and the viewers.

It is a translation of feelings and storytelling through body movements.

The formations articulate the efforts of synchronized circulation of individual bodies coming together to create a greater form.

Growing up dancing classical ballet has shaped a big part of what I am today.

This personal project merges two of my passions, and translates the investigation of the body as a drawing machine.

Tracking movement, speed, time, and ballet foundation positions creates a rhythm in space and therefore becomes an opportunity to explore drawing techniques.

Metropolitan lifestyle transcends national borders, if not straight out eliminates them.

In a world where urban dwellers are in the majority, city culture has replaced folk culture in every regional civilization, morphing and merging into one world culture. Pre-industrial history created a diversity of civilizations, but bred homogeneity in each of them; post-industrial history promotes diversity within a civilization, but turns the world into a homogeneous one. The end result of post-industrialism is a global culture of cosmopolitanism with local characteristics.

Our urban arts and dances dominate the world as the common popular culture. Our modern Architecture has become the standardized product on this planet. Our identities may be different, but we come to share the same essence as citizens of this ecumenopolis. This zine crowd-sourced ideas across cultures and reflect back to one of the world’s cultural capital of NYC. It gives us readers a sense of universality, though what we see as “universality” is just the “universality” of urban dwellers.

“Traditional”, “backward” cultures are left forgotten, before being encroached on by our very own superior civilization and lost permanently. We have crossed the tipping point and come to embrace the age of super gentrification. In this ecumenopolis we built, we can walk out 25 feet off a building anytime we like, but we can never leave. We are locked in the universal city, or, university.
