Simple Accordion Artist Book made for Art of the Book I taught by Robbin Silverberg. David Lynch is notoriously known to not speak about his work; he believes once you give someone a description, it changes the way you perceive it. He created an art piece titled Rickey Board that comments on how names change objects. He took flies, pinned them in different positions, and gave them each a name. The flies “transform” before your eyes and garner personalities from the name alone. In my interpretation, I used the Spotted Lanternfly, an invasive species that news sources were encouraging people to kill. These flies have been demonized; however, giving them names changes the way they’re perceived. This book is a square accordion allowing for it to be stretched out and stood up, making each “rickey” read as a card. “It isn’t tricky just name each ricky. Even though they’re all the same, the change comes from the name.”

“25 FEET Off Higgins” is a truly student organized zine publication that aims to showcase student work on an accessible and personal scale. We are unofficial, unpolished, nonbureaucratic, and off Higgins. The book’s title acknowledges that Higgins is where we emerged and where we were originally from. However, we must stay away from its jurisdiction. 25 feet from Higgins is where students are allowed to smoke. “25 FEET Off Higgins” is where students are allowed to express themselves freely while having proximity to their base. It is a discussion from beyond Higgins; to be brought back into Higgins.
