THE DAWN OF RADIANCE: A Journey into the Unseen

Inspired by the fleeting moment of the golden hour in the crown of the Swiss Alps, in 2021, La Prairie sought to recreate its unique radiance and impart it to the skin with the unveiling of the Pure Gold collection. In 2022, La Prairie explores another radiant Swiss landscape. Suspended between the majestic minerality and the vast lakes of Switzerland, there exists a singular place overlooking lac Léman where radiance reaches an apex of beauty. It is a place shaped by ancient terraced vineyards traced by stone walls. Throughout the day, the bright sun directly irradiates the mountain face while its rays are reflected off the mirror-like surface of the lake to ignite the Swiss mineral surfaces. The energy of the sun is captured and stored in these ancient stones. When the sun sets, Swiss peaks are veiled in darkness and a calmness blankets the landscape. The replenishing energy of the sun that was captured during the day continues to seep through the mineral core in a nocturnal diffusion, allowing the vines to thrive at night. Inspired by this nightly phenomenon, the scientists at La Prairie sought to capture its essence.

“All things are possible with tequila and lipstick.” Metta Risdal is a terrific choice for any magazine cover. The talented CEO and Founder of Uni Tequila is making a name for herself traveling back and forth from Palm Beach to the Hamptons, as her new Uni Tequila brand is being served at the most exclusive resorts and restaurants. We took a shot and we scored a cover story with this busy model turned entrepreneur who is all about exquisite taste and style. George Clooney better watch out as Uni Tequila continues to be the hands-down winner in customer taste tests with Casamigos tequila! Our friend, former 25A cover star and global influencer Jen Selter's talented sister Stephanie shares her beautiful wedding day with us. Beauty expert Nabila Khashoggi talks about beauty with reporter Debbie Dickinson and another top beauty expert, Kian Stave, learns about cosmetic chemistry from Luisa Fanzani. Tequila, fine dining, travel, fashion, and art are all a part of this current issue as well as some of the most important charity events of the season in Palm Beach, Manhattan, and the Hamptons. So grateful to our entire hard-working staff and truly excited about potential new opportunities to share our magazine’s top-shelf content and industryleading luxury-based stories with over 200 million households around the world. But we’ll save that news for when the time is right. Best wishes,

“The idea is not to live forever; it is to create something that will.”—Andy Warhol Springtime and New York City and the Hamptons were abuzz with major art world activities. Andy Warhol’s “Marilyn” was snatched up by Larry Gagosian and an untitled work by Jean-Michel Basquiat also sold well. NYC art fairs like Nada and Frieze kept Art World insider Rachel Vancelette busy as always, when she wasn’t attending the Met Gala where Fashion and Art came together smashingly on the red carpet in the form of Rihanna and Gustav Klimt’s Woman in Gold. Kourosh Mahboubian, Robert Mann, artists Eric Payson, Robin Koffler and Orly Cogan all kept busy as well selling, creating and talking art as did renowned art expert, Renée Vara, who checked out the Marina Adams show on the Upper East Side and the Parrish Gallery in Water Mill. Our dear friend Jen Selter (we all know as the (face of Blend jet, global health and fitness influencer & Guess model) celebrated what would be called the wedding of the year, as Jen’s beautiful accomplished sister Stephanie Jayne tied the knot with her best friend Benjamin Weingarten.

Love is in the air! Enjoy!

Make Your Long Day’s Journey Into Night:

From Natural Beauty to Over-the-Top Glam By Debbie Dickinson and Katherine Sloan

A

fter my fourth decade in the Fashion and Beauty industries with many covers of Vogue under my belt, I’ve tried just about every cosmetic brand for my skin texture and color. Recently, I checked up on Nabila K—an especially favored brand—as to what new products they have in store. I was surprised to hear that this lovely lifestyle brand has stepped center stage into the beauty industry by launching a full makeup line of all-natural, clean beauty products. I asked for the company to send me some selections for my summer beauty story pronto. A generously full product line arrived. I proceeded to set up a photo shoot to describe the application and create some new makeup ideas with the fresh new colors. “A certain place or a special color, texture, or scent is luxury.” –Nabila Khashoggi What started as a skincare line filled with products to add a certain beauty to your life turned into a lifestyle brand, complete with not only candles and bubble baths but with attainable luxury. Now Nabila K is the home of exciting new makeup products that are clean, organic, ethical and, of course, glamorous. My agent, Stephanie Grill at Click Models was on the phone in a heartbeat to seek out the new look (created with Nabila K makeup) for beauty models. The model, MK H, was reserved in a New York minute as our makeup “It Girl” for the photo shoot. Once that was locked down, I proceeded to book my favorite makeup artist, Odilis Trinidad from Team Marcelo Costa and the ingenious duo, Sami and Lolita from LOMI photography. Here’s the scoop on every single Nabila K product you’ll need to create four enchanting makeup looks. NATURAL GLAM Odilis greeted MK H’s face to cleanse and prep the skin for makeup with Bioderma Sensibio, Danesa Myrick’s Dewey Forever Mist, Danesa Myrick’s Prism Fix and Vision Cream Cover N 3 and Danesa’s oil. She stressed that moisture is an essential part of the beauty process! She set the models hair with a hot iron and pins. The special product that she put in the hair before ironing was Affixx 31 Prep It from Elgon. Once the hair was set, she mixed Danesa Oil with Danesa foundation that matched the

model’s skin tone. Her application was smooth and fluid. Now she was ready for the application of Nabila K’s Cult Fave #414 eye shadow. Once smoothly applied, Odilis added Nabila K’s eye shadow #545 just under the lower lashes from the inner eye to the last lash. The triangle wings were applied with the shade, “Desert” #356. A thin stroke of eyeliner was applied with Ultra-Black Waterproof Eyeliner. Surrounding the edge of the model’s lips were Nabila K’s brand new lip liner in “Satin,” Lipstick #154 in “French Kiss” and “Nearly Naked” lip gloss #165. The lipstick “French Kiss” was also used as rouge on the highest part of the cheekbone. Did you know that you can use your lipstick as a blusher, too? Just rub a bit into those places where you need a little extra color and a bit of bloom. Finally, a stroke of the “Poodle” eye shadow was brushed into the eyebrows to enhance the eyes. Odilis finished the eyes with Odilis Lashes made ethically from mink hair (collected during changing season) to complete the look. PLUM GLAM FOR BRUNCH Inspired by Twiggy, our favorite 1960’s model with those amazing eyes. Atop clean foundation, the eyelids sport a thin layer from the “Party Girl” eye shadow palette (#570). Triangular lines were applied with #406 and Odilis embellished the look with a thin swoosh of “Party Girl” shadow #600 underneath the eyes. “Eyes Closed” eye shadow was brushed into the brows. Remember that you don’t need a pencil to finish off your eyebrows; eye shadow is softer and creates a more subtle effect. Nabila K’s Ultra-Black Waterproof Eyeliner Pen was used along the edge of the eyelid. For the lips, “Bella” #263 lipstick and lip gloss in “Party” #106 completed the ultra-cool, mod look. June 2022

Sunset to Night Glam

SUNSET GLAM FOR COCKTAIL HOUR This look is classic. With light, silky and matte finishes (as seen on lots of brides this season), the “Moroccan Sand” Palette was used on the eyes (#’s 589, 622, 506) to create a sumptuous evening beauty, perfect for cocktails and mingling. “Chamois” eye shadow was used to play up the eyes and the lip liner in “Nude” brushed with the “Cocoa Puff” lip gloss #125 were applied to create a sassy pout. Of course, you’ll need to use Nabila K’s Ultra-Black Waterproof Eyeliner to really finish off any alluring look. For extra glitz, do not forget your fabulous lashes! NIGHT GLAM For some serious nighttime mystique, you’ll want to go (almost) as dark as possible. Your makeup should be seen even in the darkened room of an ultra-chic nightclub and beneath the glistening lights of a disco ball. This nighttime look was created with the help of all Nabila K makeup products—all clean, all natural and organic. The eyelids were embellished with “Chamois” #283 and #605 in the “Silver Linings” eye shadow palette. “Blackest Eye” #595 was used underneath the eye for that sexy smoky look and “Ink” #460 was applied to the crease of the eyelid. The eyebrows were lightened with the “Poodle” #402 eye shadow (lighter eyebrows really make a statement if you’re going to create a look with dark eyes and a bright red lip). To finish off the face, this show-stopping red lip was achieved with Nabila K’s new “Vixen” lipstick. Trust us, the right lipstick really makes a difference! And, finally Rasta Gum 100 by Elgon Cosmetics was used on the baby hair to create those enviable flapper-inspired curls. 44

AMERICAN YACHT AGENTS

LAUNCH TO LUXURY By Whitney Thompson

A

merican Yacht Agents is a full-service yachting agency based at the prestigious Berth One at the Port of Palm Beach. I recently had the opportunity to talk with owner Debora Radtke about her company and her experience in the yacht industry.

Debora Radtke

25A Magazine | 25amagazine.com

Growing up in Wisconsin, Debora spent her childhood summers sailing on Lake Superior. “My family owned a series of sailboats, and my parents had a built-in crew of seven children,” she told me. She inherited a great love for boats, and she even had a small boat services business during high school. After exploring other career options in Minneapolis and St. Paul, she moved back home and got her captain’s license. “My friends asked me, ‘why are you wasting nine months out of the year in the snow and cold?’” she told me with a laugh. She took their advice and moved to Florida, where she worked on board yachts for 16 years, starting as a cook and stewardess, and later working as first mate to a very hands-on captain. “He did his own engineering, so I spent a lot of time in the engine room and learned a lot about that side of the business.” She then worked as a captain herself. In 2011, deciding she didn’t want to be at sea all the time, she moved her career shoreside. “I floundered for a couple of years, then eventually, I was fortunate to be in a position to start my own company.” Her various experience from the three major departments of the interior, engine room, and bridge of yachts equipped her well for founding American Yacht Agents. “This April is the seven-year anniversary of the launch of American Yacht Agents.”

Photography by Callie Jones American Yacht Agent’s tagline is “Simplifying your life.” They do this with their host of services including ensuring port state compliance of incoming vessels to concierge services upon arrival. “We work with a really great team of vendors to provide everything from dockage arrangement to black car services,” Debora told me. They also have a beautiful lounge for the crews. “We provide support for vessels all the way from Fort Pierce to Miami, occasionally Key West, and it’s expanding. This summer, we’re even providing assistance to Viking Ocean Cruises up on the Great Lakes.” Debora credits the success of American Yacht Agents to the relationships she has been able to build throughout her career. When I asked Debora what sets her company apart, she replied, “I think it’s because I’ve been a captain. I really understand what captains go through, and I try to do everything I can to make things easier for them.” She added that with vessels growing in size and the increased regulations that captains need

to follow, her company has built strong relationships with Customs and Border Patrol and the US Coast Guard to help stay on top of changing rules and effectively guide their clients. Debora also shared, “One of my primary philosophies in business is that it’s a collaborative effort. This is a small industry, and I firmly believe that if we all work together, we all grow.” Her team approach helps American Yacht Agents to best serve their clients’ needs. When Debora isn’t working, she rescues dogs, most recently bringing home Lily, a lab-beagle mix. She’s loved animals from the time she was a child. “I think everyone thought I’d become a veterinarian, but I didn’t have the patience to go through the schooling,” she laughed. MICHAEL MORITZ

M

Creating Killer Design through Connection By Whitney Thompson

ichael A. Moritz and his firm, Stonewater Architecture, have made a name for themselves in affluent communities in New York, New Jersey, and, most recently, Palm Beach, Florida. An incredibly accomplished architect featured on the cover of Design NJ and in Luxe Interiors + Design, Michael prides himself on doing things differently in the design world and thinking outside the box. He has exceptional creative design skill, and his projects boast showstopper quality. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Michael about his unique approach to meaningful design. Michael’s passion is working with clients with big ideas who are looking for a particular feeling in their new home. He takes the seed of a client’s dream and, with his expert perspective and interpretation, transcends that vision into a home beyond what they could have

52

25A Magazine | 25amagazine.com

imagined. “I always gravitate toward projects that have a really good backstory,” Michael told me. When he meets a new client, he gets to know their interests, personality, and what excites them. His unique approach to design relies heavily on building these relationships. “I like seeing how I’m going to connect with them, if there’s a good vibe, and if we’re going to be able to communicate and collaborate.” Michael’s approach also considers how the client is going to live in the house. We all utilize our space differently, and he strives to tailor his designs to make the most sense for his clients and their lifestyles. It’s about how they’re going to live their lives within what he builds for them. A recent client of his, Christine Hughes, shared, “He listened, he had a clear understanding of how we wanted to utilize and live in our home, and he made it a reality.” His easy going and calming

nature make him a delight to work with through the home design and building process, and one can expect true quality and skill in his designs. Michael’s passion for architecture started when he was a child. He had an intense interest when he looked at buildings, especially when traveling to historic places and experiencing different styles of architecture. He spent his days creating, building things with his grandfather, and drawing houses in his school notebooks. “It’s something that’s in me. I was seventeen years old and I knew I was going to be an architect,” he shared. I asked Michael where he finds personal inspiration. “I love being out and experiencing great architecture. When I see interesting projects, say, on Instagram, I try to go to those spots and find those homes to really see what other architects are doing and how they’re doing it.” He spoke of the distinctive experience of seeing a property in person that allows him to encounter the space as the architect intended that cannot be matched with photographs. In his designs, Michael told me, “I love all different styles of architecture. I like merging styles, like modern and traditional, together sometimes, while trying to stay true to what they are.” His work in the Palm Beach area is unique in that his designs tend to be more upbeat and modern, and often break away from the traditional Florida style. Michael will soon be expanding his design work to the Hamptons where the people are open to exploring new ideas and appreciate his modern creative design and style. When you choose Michael A. Moritz and Stonewater Architecture for your new home design project, you will get top quality design skill as well as a truly personal, one-on-one experience. “We’re a small firm of six people who work solely with our clients. You won’t meet me and then be handed off.” They will make sure your vision comes to life. You can see Michael’s work at stonewaterarch.com and on Instagram @stonewaterarchitecture.

METTA RISDAL UNI Tequila: A Smooth Spirit of Luxury By Whitney Thompson

U

Photos: Tara Quinn Hair & Makeup: Sofia Beskasnova @palmbeachmakeup

NI Tequila is a hot new brand that has quickly become a cult favorite. It is now being offered at exclusive resorts and restaurants in the Hamptons and Palm Beach areas. I spoke with Metta Risdal, UNI’s CEO and Founder, about the huge success she and her tequila have had in the mere months since launching in the US. “It’s difficult to get a brand into places like this so quickly, especially if you’re not a celebrity,” she told me. Recently awarded the prestigious Double Gold SIP Award for taste, UNI is named in part for unique attributes that make it stand out from among other tequilas. So what is it that makes UNI so special? UNI Tequila is an organic, keto-friendly, blanco tequila that is different from any other blanco on the market. While most blancos are bottled immediately, UNI is aged just less than two months in oak barrels, giving it the unique designation of a rested blanco. This gives the spirit its distinctive extra smoothness that impresses drinkers. In blind taste tests against leading competitors like Casamigos, Patron, Clase Azul, and Don Julio, UNI is a clear winner. “Side by side, there’s

just no comparison according to my customers, and I agree,” Metta shared. UNI is made from organic agave grown in sweeping fields of rich, pure soil with sun exposure from sunrise to sunset. The organic agave is more naturally sweet than its non-organic counterparts, further setting UNI apart. When I asked Metta about her passion for tequila, she told me, “Tequila’s always been my favorite drink, as it’s the only upper among the different alcohols.” Fifteen years ago, she began traveling regularly to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, as a tourist, and she would also visit distilleries in the city of Tequila. She became captivated by the process of tequila making. “I’ve always had a love for tequila, for the whole process and the love that goes into it. I found it so fascinating how much more care and time it takes to make compared with other spirits.” Metta credits her work ethic and drive to succeed to her upbringing and the example of her parents, Rolf and Liv. she was expected to be a boy. With two older sisters, her father greatly anticipated a son he could take hunting and fishing in their home country of Norway. “I think maybe he raised me a little tougher, and I’m so grateful for that now,” she told me with a laugh. Her father worked his entire career for a company that manufactured parts for cruise ships, first as a laborer working 18-hour days for several years, and later as a manager until his retirement. “It’s wonderful how reliable and hard working he is, and I really wanted to adopt that quality in my life,” Metta told me. Her mother was a landscape worker laying stone and seed for wealthy homeowners. At the young age of six, Metta accompanied her mother to work each day. Here she learned the value of hard work as she received a wage of her very own for her efforts. Growing up, she biked to the fields in the summers to pick strawberries and raspberries. When she was 14 years old, Metta put an ad in the newspaper advertising herself as a house cleaner, and she worked on the weekends while attending school. At 15, she worked weekends during school at a bridal shop, and she continued during the summer, many times working 9 AM to midnight. Metta later came to the US and worked as a bartender and a model. But she found her true passion in creating and perfecting a full-bodied, smooth tequila. Metta, who lives in Palm Beach County and spends her summers in the Hamptons, is 100% owner of UNI Tequila and the sole business manager, sales team, product developer, and packaging designer. “All of this I do myself, which is good, because now I know every part of the business. When I decide to do something, I’m all in,” Metta told me. She is incredibly hands-on in marketing her product, and she prefers to conduct business in person. She has found great success visiting local restaurants and bars and allowing proprietors to taste her tequila. The response is always incredibly positive. “They say, ‘Wow, that’s just unbelievable,’” she said with pride. “The sweet smoothness is something people really love.” In addition to the exquisite smoothness of the liquor, the silken frosted glass bottle and beautiful cork stopper really set UNI apart. The sleek nine diamond pattern is a nod to the nine women working at the UNI bottling facility as well as the nine men working in the organic agave fields. “Everyone deserves the luxury of having a beautiful bottle of UNI on their home bar,” Metta said of the tequila’s packaging. The packaging exudes opulence, and the delicious tequila is perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks,

like a fine-aged whiskey or bourbon. “Every once in a while if I feel like an Old Fashioned, instead of putting in the bourbon or whiskey, I get UNI,” Metta said. “I replace everything with UNI now. Especially in an espresso martini, the UNI is naturally sweeter and it’s just so delicious. It’s become one of my favorites. When I go out for dinner, I start the evening out with that cocktail.” Even though her product is of obvious quality and the taste speaks for itself, Metta has found there to be much more to creating a successful business than she anticipated. Metta’s incredible persistence and belief in her product has brought her tequila to the hands of the barand restaurant-goers in Palm Beach and the Hamptons. UNI can be enjoyed at fine dining establishments such as Gurney’s Montauk and Gurney’s Star Island, Sant Ambroeus, 1000 North, and BiCE. “I’m so grateful to these early supporters. I always knew that when you have a great product, especially in gorgeous, luxurious packaging, there’s always a market,” Metta shared. UNI Tequila sponsors several charity events, most recently participating in the 15th Annual Boca Concours D’Elegance, where all proceeds went to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County, Florida. “I love running around talking to people with a bottle

of UNI in my hand. I’m so excited to have people try it and enjoy fun moments with them. It is incredibly rewarding using my brand for a good cause. I want to do it more and more,” Metta told me. She’s looking forward to participating in the same event in Pebble Beach this August. You’ll also find her at the 33rd Annual Gala Benefit for the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center in Bridgehampton, New York, on August 6. When Metta isn’t meeting with beverage directors or attending restaurant staff meetings to acquaint bartenders with UNI, she loves spending time with her French bulldog, Lumi. “He’s my love and light,” she told me fondly. She loves taking him on walks along the beautiful beaches of the Hamptons. UNI tequila is available to ship to 46 states, and Metta is so excited to soon introduce UNI to all states in the US. Ask for UNI at your local liquor store, restaurant, resort, club, or bar. “We want everyone to have access to the best tequila,” said Metta. "THE MISTAKEN BOND GIRL"

H

ailing from the city that never sleeps, ever-fashionable American artist Hallie Hart has certainly been living up to that hometown moniker. The modern expressionist painter whom friends lovingly call Flag girl, but who could easily be confused for classic Bond girl Maud Adams, has brought her New York City style, energy and elegance to the star studded beach town of Malibu as she sets up for a second leg of her US flag exhibition Unity that takes place this fall in the big apple. Over the last few years Hart has found herself on the radar of some of the largest collectors from around the globe, and her stunning American Flag exhibition last fall continues to propel the artist further still. It’s no surprise, considering Hart maintains studios wherever she lives, which happens to be in some of the most prestigious cities in the world; Monte-Carlo, London and Manhattan to name a few. Her new studio is an enormous barn she had built on a private estate property, hidden away on the French Riviera where her grandmother painted as a girl, and it’s a location purposely scouted by Hart for specific reasons. “I like to

paint outside as much as I can and see what she saw, and solitude is everything to my process,” she said adding, “being alone with my music and breathing it all in makes my work come to life in a powerful way, no matter where I am, I need this.” I sat down with Hart in this grounding work space to talk fashion, humanity and the message behind it all.

GLOBETROTTING ARTIST: HALLIE HART

Covered head to toe in paint, hair and all, still lovely, she greeted me with her infectious, big smile from a distance and quipped that she would hug me, but I might end up a walking piece of art myself. She dusted off an old barstool that so clearly carried the colors from all her paintings of the past. “It’s the only thing that’s survived every single one of my studios, no matter where I go in the world it comes with me,” she laughed. Looking around it’s easy to see Hart has come a long way from her struggling days of her twenties in New York City where she first began creating art in a small art studio in lower Manhattan. She describes it as a romantic and fashionable time. “I couldn’t afford to shop, so I went to vintage and highend, second-hand stores to buy clothes, and painted those. I felt like a rockstar with splatters of gold and silver all over a simple black dress. “I still have that dress and it is one of a kind!” Hart recalls. She spent the time after those early New York City days traveling wherever the inspiration took her. Hart was living between London and Monte-Carlo before she decided to make a trip back to the states to perform a live painting event during Miami Art Basel in 2019. From there, her location would be decided for her. The pandemic hit and she found herself back in a long-term relationship with her home country. “My head was swirling from the news and I didn’t know what to do,” she remembers, adding, “That night I dreamt of flags and when I woke up, that was it. A flag was born.” Hart explains. The fifteen foot painting she did at Art Basel became the flag and flagship of her heartfelt campaign. Hart's Unity project began in her Aspen gallery with a few pieces to start and grew into a collection of 50 different interpretations of the American Flag. Hart has promised herself that she will make 100. I asked why the flag and why 100? “I don’t know exactly why. I knew I wanted to challenge myself,” she contemplated.. “To me the flag is the backbone of this country and we are the rest, deserving of the same rights and freedoms. I only wanted us to remember we’re all in it together and art was my way of doing so. If I touch just one person that I meet, then I’m a much better person for it.” My thoughts are that you’ll see a lot more of this brilliant artist and kind human being, she is a true force of nature. Hart recently started selling her Unity flags for Ukraine with 100 percent of the proceeds donated.

The massive, highly marbled Porterhouse steaks that arrive on platters from the kitchen are frequently followed by Maine Lobsters that appear to be just as large. This, of course, necessitates selecting a wine from their award-winning wine list. Large format wines hand-picked by Bobby Van’s Sommelier are a strong feature of the wine list. The selection of California Cabernets and Meritage style wines is extensive.

When walking in, one is greeted by a credenza groaning under the weight of large bottles of wine. A bar with regular customers is on the left, and the hundred-seat dining room has a thirtyfoot high ceiling and windows that overlook Park Avenue

Bobby Van’s has been named Gourmet Magazine’s favorite Manhattan steakhouse. They have also received the DiRoNA award and are one of the Michelin Guide’s recommended restaurants. Bobby Van’s elegant menu options include the finest steaks, seafood, and other delectable entrees, as well as an outstanding bar and an unparalleled, award-winning wine list that is sure to satisfy one’s eager taste buds.

Bobby Van’s is known for its traditional steakhouse fare, including the traditional Porterhouse Steak (a premium cut of beef that can be shared between 2-4 people) and its signature Filet Mignon (a prime, tender cut of beef with exceptional taste

Interview with Art World Expert

RENEE VARA By Adam Kluger Photo credit: Jo Broughton

Any thoughts about the recent New York Art fairs and auctions? We just got off of three incredible weeks of nonstop auctions, fairs, and gallery openings - it was great to see everyone after the lull. And I am happy, as a feminist art historian undergraduate, to finally see the long-awaited moment of "corrective history." There is a refocus in the market on diversifying art and properly recentering neglected artists including female artists, artists of color, and activists. Why do you love NYC? I love New York because it is truly a place of inclusion - where no one has to feel bound by any metaphorical box. It has always been personally and professionally to me, the ultimate place to claim your complexity. There is such a collective sense of creative capital and even after I have worked around the world in many art centers, NYC is still extraordinary. I came here for that freedom that I have enjoyed for over three decades, and now think there is an upside to the pandemic because it has afforded a new youth culture that is formulating its own generational expression. What’s going on with the Art Market these days? Well - the Art World is back and like a Phoenix rising, New York is yet again the center of the art world. More business is transacted here, and even more so after the pandemic than in any other city in the world including Hong Kong, London, and Paris. I think the Pandemic in a way made the art world better - as galleries, auctions, and fairs were forced to pivot online. So, it opened up access to a 76

great extent, and the art world is no longer an exclusive enclave of insiders. Now people across the world can learn, listen, and look at what’s happening on a very sophisticated level of participation. What type of consulting and conservation work are you up to? I am a recognized valuation specialist who works with investmentgrade objects to help navigate the complexities when they are damaged. I work closely with artists, conservators, collectors, galleries, and companies to ensure the work is conserved for posterity, to preserve value, and also ensure that the artist’s legacy is honored. It’s a collaborative process and the opportunity to consult with talented conservators, who are like art surgeons, makes it extremely technical and nuanced work, but also a fascinating process because it equalizes all the stakeholders to achieve a common good for the artwork and artist. Renee, please tell us about the artist advocacy you have been involved with. Besides building collections responsibly for the last several decades, I was recently the art expert for the successful 5Pointz landmark case that set a legal precedent for protecting artists under the Federal Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA). That advocacy work has expanded beyond NYC, and I have been advising other artists across the US, including my most recent high-profile cases which involve upholding the rights of two female artists and the integrity of their public sculptures. I also actively lecture on these concerns to artists, art professionals, and lawyers because moral rights are seemingly esoteric in America.

Critic's Corner by Bob Massimi

How I Learned to Drive Mary- Louise Parker is Moving If the stars line up, Mary-Louise Parker should win her third Tony (Proof, The Sound Inside). After 25 years, Parker and David Morse, who plays uncle Peck (The Ice Man Cometh, The Long Green Mile) return to their roles in this deep, disturbing play. Parker, or Li'l Bit as she is called by her family is a deep-feeling actress and a true wonder to watch on stage; maybe the best of today's female actors. "How I Learned To Drive" is once again directed by Marl Brokaw. Here Brokaw makes a major mistake in not letting this wonderful actor have more anguish when being assaulted. We see Uncle Peck getting her drunk, fondling her at the young age of 13, and taking lewd photos of her while encouraging her to pose for Playboy. What should have been a devastating climax in a hotel room feels flat and emotionless. Johanna Day, who also appeared in the original production was humorous at times and she too fell flat at other times. Miscast in their roles are Alyssa May Gold and Chris Myers. These two actors play various parts, none of which they fully embody and as such, their acting only goes through the motions. Rachel Hauck's set is plain but effective in the eternal feel of the columns moving back to show time moving in each direction. Writer Paula Vogel has put forth her best work here (better than "Indecent"). Unfortunately, the direction and choice of supporting characters make this "Drive" weaker than when we last saw it 25 years ago. -BM

American Buffalo Rockwell Rocks in This Classic. An all-star cast makes this American Buffalo by David Mamet move at a rat-a-tat pace. Originally written in 1975, it tells the tale of three con men who want to recoup a Buffalo nickel sold to a customer. Directed by Neil Pepe who has worked on many Mamet projects, this play is as raw as the first time that I saw it in Circle In The Square downtown. In planning the heist, the three are both funny and intense. Sam Rockwell plays an excellent Teach; his interaction with Donny (Lawrence Fishburne) is magnetic. Darren Criss, too, is a standout as the unintelligent, low confidence gopher. This play is old school, replete with cursing, racial epithets, and violence, and left many of the wokesters heading for the exits early. The brilliant industrial lighting by Tyler Micoleau and the junk store setting by Scott Pask bring this three-quarter round stage front and center and give the audience nowhere to escape this well-done performance.- BM Hangman A Hanging Dark Comedy It's 1965 and hangings are outlawed in England. The second-best hangman, Harry (David Threlfall) is out of a job. Written by Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside, The Pillowman) and directed by Matthew Dunster, Hangman pokes fun at death and hardship in this two-and-a-half-hour play. The second act is a standout, but the first act finds that the accents and low volume make it difficult at times to hear what is going on. Anna Fleischle gives the audience a spectacular set and wonderful costumes. The cast is all substantial in this inconsistent play. If the first act was as brisk as the second, this would have been a very formidable play. Instead, McDonagh takes his time setting up the first act which leaves a lot of the audience dozing off during act 1. - BM June 2022

A RARE JEWEL OF OPERA HISTORY

COMES TO BATTERY PARK CITY FOR IT’S 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

(1883–1944) He caused quite a stir by placing emphasis on the female character with the title Giulietta e Romeo —not at all common in those days. All the classic elements of the ancient story made famous by Shakespere can also be found in Zandonai’s 1922 rendition: family rivalry, an ecstatic fight scene, the triumphant return, and of course, prohibited love between the illustrious Giulietta Capuleti and Romeo Montecchi embodied in the iconic balcony scene. Known for its progressive and multimedia-based exploration of opera, Teatro Grattacielo’s use of technology and contemporary aesthetics will bring a whole new twist to the classic tale— a real treat for the senses! Crisp, saturated and dynamic projections of splashing waves, marbleized liquids, and dynamic close-ups will bring the Wagner Pavilion to life while acting as the scenic backdrop to the story. The color palette will be dominated by black with splashes of sultry color to contrast. In addition to Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt and 9 secondary characters, the composition will include a 30 piece orchestra and a 30 person double chorus representing the two opposing families: Montagues and Capulets. About BPCA: Established in 1968, The Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority is a New York State Public Benefit Corporation charged with developing and maintaining a well-balanced community on the Lower West Side of Manhattan. Since 2012, Sekajugo has worked with the manipulation of the common stock image to reveal its inherent biases of entitlement and privilege largely modelled on the Western self. Conceptually, the works of Sekajugo become pure theatre, a hacking of identity that exposes some truths behind these stock images that quietly continue to colonize the entire globe by the weight of their own popularity. The 59th International Art Exhibition titled “Milk of Dreams” will take place from April 23rd to November 27th 2022 curated by Cecilia Alemani. “As the first Italian woman to hold this position, I intend to give voice to artists to create unique projects that reflect their visions and our society.” notes Cecilia Alemani Quickfire Series 2022 by Rachel Vancelette will include forthcoming interviews throughout the duration of the La Biennale di Venezia engaging artists’ experiences, presentation and engagement in the cent since the pandemic delayed original official dates.

Artist Acaye Kerunen is a multidisciplinary performance and installation artist, storyteller, writer, actress, and activist based in Kampala, Uganda. Kerunen’s process as a socially engaged artist foregrounds the work of local and regional Ugandan craftswomen, celebrating them as integral collaborators and elevating the artistic practices of local artisans who are the gatekeepers of their local wetlands, drawing upon a sacred and unspoken knowledge of ecological stewardship. By deconstructing utilitarian materials and artisan crafts, Kerunen repositions the work in order to tell new stories and posit new meaning. The act of re-installing these deconstructed materials is a response to the agency of women’s work in Africa and an acknowledgment of the role that this artistic labor plays in the climate ecosystem. Artist Collin Sekajugo approaches his work from a distinct, aesthetic departure point that resides in his repeated return to pop culture and the omnipresent influence exuded by the global mainstream. OUGANDA, 2021 “Presenting mikekas and bibbos at the Venice biennale is something of a radical response to the overall focus on painting at the moment in East Africa. Painting is an imported European culture, mostly male, and the responses from our culture can rarely go beyond that point. Using ancient fibre materials in mats, baskets, ropes and twines that are supplied to my art in collaboration with Ugandan artisan women weavers completes my conceptual circle. These extraordinary women are also guardians of the wetlands from which these materials stem. My polymath practice allows me to reposition these materials from ancient voices and hallowed grounds, acting as an amplifier to thousands of years of oral memory, maternal wisdoms and those quiet voices that still whisper through the reeds.” -Acaye Kerunen

“A painting has to work hard in contemporary global culture. It presents one vantage point and it doesn’t come attached with either movement or sound or dialogue. It is obscured by hundreds of years of layers of Western art history, but still, if it works hard enough, it breaks new ground in the quest that most paintings seek, which is to achieve iconic status.” -Collin Sekajugo

10th Anniversary Celebration spawns a second colorful fashion collaboration with international artist

YAYOI KUSAMA X LOUIS VUITTON | ART X FASHION By Rachel Vancelette

L

ouis Vuitton recently announced the latest new collaboration with contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who continues to be sought after by art and fashion enthusiasts alike. Many recount the most recent spring sale in 2019 of Kusama’s artwork Interminable Net #4, 1959, which went for a staggering 14.8 million USD at Sotheby›s Hong Kong Contemporary Art Sales shattering records for the artist. At 92, Kusma has become the very first woman in the top 10 global artists with the best-ever annual auction total from the sale of over 700 lots, according to Artprice. com. Her international celebrity continues to bring color to our lives, leaving us wanting more! Yayoi Kusama continues to dazzle global audiences with her immersive “Infinity Mirror Rooms” and a unique aesthetic that embraces anything from light, polka dots, and pumpkins. Crowds line up on the street for hours to see her latest art installations, window displays, and art exhibitions; David Zwirner›s art gallery exhibitions of the artist have continued to hit all-time audience attendance numbers. The artist first rose to prominence in 1960s New York, where she staged provocative Happenings and exhibited hallucinatory paintings of loops and dots that she called «Infinity Nets.” Kusama is known to have even influenced Andy Warhol and continues to be the subject of major exhibitions worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. So if one cannot afford to get a multi-million dollar artwork, why not grab yourself a new LV handbag with the artist’s iconic colorful painted dots, reflective materials, and more? Louis Vuttion’s Instagram took in over 150,000 views right after revealing the very first videos of the reinterpretations of the artists’ creative process of obsessive colorful dots for the new LV 2023

collection. Many remember Kusama’s impressive first collection arriving in force on full display in the Soho Store in New York (under the direction of Marc Jacobs) many years ago. It entranced and engulfed the entire LV store with her acclaimed artwork covering handbags, wallets, and luxury items throughout the store and with window displays pouring over with dots and installations, startling visitors and engaging new audiences worldwide. The advent of the store becoming like an art institution started to take hold in the early 2000s and now today can undoubtedly be seen on-trend in stores from H&M x Jeff Koons to today Van Cleef & Arpels beautiful displays on the store facade... to the street... to inside the store of contemporary artist Alexandre Benjamin Navet.

Many art collectors, fashion enthusiasts, and handbag lovers continue the countdown for the new selections of art leather goods, some newly designed store windows and art exhibitions. Perhaps the lifelike mannequin of Kusama will reappear in the window, warming us all for the cold winter month of January 2023 when all is to be released.

“As a celebration of the Maison’s relationship with the artist and to mark the 10-year anniversary of the first collaboration, a handful of leather goods were premiered during Artistic Director of Women’s Collections Nicolas Ghesquière’s Cruise 2023 fashion show at the Salk Institute in San Diego,” stated in the press release from Louis Vuitton.

MvVO ART Presented

AD ART SHOW 2022

at Westfield World Trade Center inside the Oculus, NYC

M

By Elizabeth Darwen

vVO ART debuted AD ART SHOW at Sotheby’s New York in 2018. In its fifth year, the 2022 edition brought art directly to people by converting an advertising platform—the massive digital screens at Westfield World Trade Center inside the Oculus in New York—into a public gallery space for the entire month of May. During that time, Santiago Calatrava’s iconic Oculus was transformed into an inspiring contemporary art destination. The artists who took part had backgrounds in advertising/design or other related fields. They followed in the footsteps of Andy Warhol, Rene Magritte, and Edward Hopper, among others. Historically, some artists have made the leap, but the barriers remain; and the MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW opens the doors for these talented artists with direct connections to the art world in a celebration of artistic discovery open to all art lovers. It serves as a link between the art world and the advertising world. The artists were chosen by the MvVO ART selection committee —a who’s who of contemporary art experts and globally recognized creative pioneers. During an Advertising Industry Opening Reception hosted by HAVAS New York, MvVO ART announced that Chanell Angeli took top honors in AD ART SHOW 2022. The MvVO ART jury of collectors awarded Chanell Angeli a Specialty Clio in Contemporary Art. A mixed-media artist of Caribbean descent, her work draws on her heritage, and interest in the relationship between poetry and visual art, to create immersive

experiences, exploring themes of the divine feminine and the African Diaspora. Her work is rich in emotional content and intelligence. For the reception, the wine was sponsored by Havas New York and Annex88 client Stags’ Leap Winery, one of Treasury Wine Estates’ properties. Parme Marin and Layla Nami were also named 2022 show winners. Parme Marin creates works of art with leather, hair, and wood, exploring “La Peau” (the skin). Layla Nami’s bold imagery draws inspiration from Persian folktales, medieval tapestries, and illuminated manuscripts. Another highlight of this year’s AD ART SHOW was feature selections from an extraordinary series of photographs by Dutch photographer Caroline Sikkenk. The photos were displayed on monumental digital advertising screens May 15 to May 21, 2022. Caroline Sikkenk’s participation in AD ART SHOW was supported by the American Friends of the Mauritshuis and the Mauritshuis in The Hague—home of the Vermeer masterpiece—and now celebrating 200 years since opening its doors to art lovers. Works by AD ART SHOW Artists are also for sale on the MvVO ART Artsy gallery page. www.artsy.net/partner/mvvo-art — the premiere art market site for collectors—offers artists another avenue for discovery and an opportunity for art lovers to acquire works early in art careers. INFLUENCE: An Artistic Record of Our Time By: Debbie Dickinson and Katherine Sloan

F

ormer curator and now gallerist, Debbie Dickinson invites you to experience “Influence”: an exciting new exhibition of almost prophetic contemporary artists who, through their work, have realized unforeseen events that now deeply challenge us. The artworks on display are by working and emerging painters, sculptors, art photographers and mixed media artists. With work that includes pieces from the late David Hostetler’s estate (featuring sculptures signifying balance of gender equality), Brian LeBoeuf’s series of social figuratives in oil pastels on paper, Iran Issa Khan’s oceanic Cibachrome art photography and Curtis Wallin sculptures, neon art and acrylics on canvas, very important and progressive ideas are being addressed such as representation, inclusivity and even climate change. Evan Sebastian Lagache’s powerful abstracts and collages inspired by New York City streets gives us both grit and beauty, submerged in striking, vivid color. Kristy Gordon challenges the classist, sexist and outdated divisions between high art, decoration, and illustration

as Michael Martin’s collaborative abstract works with Lagache feature his internal dialogue between the dualities of chaos and order. Finally, Ukrainian artist, Tatiana Lisovskaya features paintings in the style of Neue Cubism while her family home in Kiev is in peril. The group exhibition demonstrates how art reflects these times of dramatic social and political upheaval. An artist should act as a mirror and, through this vision, a door is opened that has the ability to transport us. This inaugural exhibition is historic in many ways. Compelling forces of contemporary history will be on view. Records have been made and, hopefully, these art works will serve as reminders so history does not repeat itself. The future is in the hands of the artists. The Grand Opening was on May 7th and “Influence” will be on view TuesdaySunday from 12pm until 7pm. The featured artists have shared their personal art theory, observations on societal influences and some of the techniques used in their artworks. 96

25A What made you want to have your own skin care line? The reason I started Luisa True Skincare was that I was fed up with all the lies and misinformation that revolve around skincare and cosmetics in general. During my college years I’ve been dealing with hormonal acne and other skin issues. I wasted a lot of money on products that didn’t deliver what they promised. This made me very frustrated. I was feeling unattractive and had no self esteem. I don’t even have pictures of back then because I refused to take any. That’s how low my confidence was. Once I started to work in the beauty industry it became clear why most products don’t work; they’re simply not properly formulated. I told myself that there has to be a better way to make skincare products and help all women that, just like me, had no self-esteem. That’s how and why I started Luisa-True skincare. Why has Micellar Water become so popular in recent years? Micellar water has been around for quite a few years; I remember using it in my 20s - it was the first skincare product I ever purchased! However it wasn’t very popular at that time.

LUISA FANZANI

L

COSMETIC CHEMIST By Kian Stave

uisa Fanzani is the maker of fine products, but we can’t know which ones. She’s a cosmetic chemist who has signed non disclosures with expensive brands. It made sense to me to go to the source, to seek out someone schooled in the chemical romance it takes to formulate a product I would want to use and talk about. So I began using her eponymous line of mid priced recipes, of acid formulations and other natural remedies. Over time I saw results. Recently I threw her some questions in search of how and why these things sometimes work out. What made you want to become a cosmetic chemist? It was actually serendipity. I graduated as a pharmacist in Italy and was looking for a job within the pharmaceutical industry or academic research. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any and couldn’t wait as I had bills to pay. That’s when I found a job opportunity in a cosmetic company. I already knew how to make medicated creams and I loved skincare - I felt I was a good fit. I got the job and loved it so much that I never looked back .

102

25A Magazine | 25amagazine.com

Its success grew in the past few years as a result of more skin education; we are now aware that aggressive foaming agents that give that feel of being squeaky clean are actually causing harm by disrupting the skin barrier. This is especially true for skin that’s already inflamed like during acne or eczema flares. Unfortunately some unethical beauty companies continue to make and sell these products because they’re cheap to make and highly profitable. I don’t want to convey the message that ALL foaming cleaners are bad, though. Mild ones do exist and are perfect to remove stubborn waterproof makeup. For all other instances, micellar water is a type of cleanser that removes all dirt and impurities without damaging the skin barrier. What are the revolutionary ingredients in anti-aging skincare? These are some ingredients potentially revolutionary like Epidermal Growth Factors (EGF) or CBD. As of 2022 further studies are necessary to see how these new ingredients compare to the old school ones. Ingredients like collagen, retinol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C all have a large corpus of scientific evidence and should be the foundations of any skincare routine. At the same time introducing some new ingredients every now and then and seeing how the skin responds is the smart thing to do. What justifies the high cost of skincare products? A common misconception in this industry is that expensive skincare products work better than drugstores ones. The truth is that some do while some others don’t. We simply can’t assume luxury products are better. The hefty price is due to what’s called brand positioning, not necessarily actual quality. For example, it’s not true that luxury products contain “more pure” or “medical grade” ingredients. In fact, all skincare companies have access to the same exact ingredients.

I am not against luxurious products at all. I do enjoy nice things. I just want people to be aware that they’re paying for the experience and status the product gives them- not actual superior quality. You state the percentages of vital ingredients on the front of your packaging. Have these percentages been proven to be the necessary amount? Stating percentages of vital ingredients is my way to rebel against “Angel Dusting” - a misleading marketing practice that consists of including a minuscule amount of an active ingredient that’s insufficient to give any measurable benefit. The advertising materials may claim that the ingredient is helpful and that the ingredient is contained in the product, both of which are true. However, no claim is made that the product contains enough of the active ingredient to have an effect – this is just assumed by the purchaser (source Wikipedia). The truth is that ingredients need to be present at a decent amount to really work on your skin. This is the so-called “ therapeutic window”. Although the concept comes from pharmacology, it makes perfect sense when applied to cosmetics as well. According to this principle when an ingredient is below a certain amount it doesn’t work to cure the disease; at the same time too much of it can cause toxicity. There’s a sweet spot - the therapeutic window- where we have benefits without toxicity. Skincare is no different. We can’t expect to see changes if the ingredients are added in a minuscule amount just for marketing purposes! This is why I list the exact percentage of the ingredients. Walk me through your skin care line for someone like myself who is in the fifties and wants to combat aging. Aging is something I feel strongly about. Women can deny it as much as they want but the truth is that no one likes to see wrinkles and other aging signs! This is why my line of products focuses a lot on aging and addresses this concern using science based ingredients. These are the anti-aging products : Micellar water: our gentle, non irritating cleanser. As we age it’s important to avoid aggressive cleansers as they dehydrate the skin. When the skin is dry, wrinkles look more prominent. Hyaluronic acid serum: our best seller serum has 1% hyaluronic acid which should be a staple in every skincare regimen. Hyaluronic acid works by increasing skin’s water content thus making it look plumpthis plumping effect makes a huge difference on both fine lines and deep wrinkles. This is why the hyaluronic acid serum is a product that works whether you’re 30 or 60. Vitamin C serum: vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that fights free radicals. Free radicals are able to change the cellular DNA and are linked to the aging process as well as other negative conditions, including cancer. We get antioxidants from our diets, but they distribute in all our body’s districts. If we want to target the skin specifically , applying vitamin C directly on it is a much better option.

Vitamin C also works to minimize dark spots, i.e photoaging. This is especially true when formulated together with another powerful antioxidant like in our serum. Niacinamide and vitamin C work together to brighten the complexion and make the skin radiant. Moisturizer: our modern lives in urban environments take a tow on our skin. Pollution and other environmental agents severely damage the skin barrier causing the skin to get dry. Furthermore, as we age, hormonal changes enhance the dryness. This is why I enriched this moisturizer with ceramide, an ingredient that repairs the skin barrier. Retinol serum: Retinol is the gold standard ingredient for anti-aging promoting collagen synthesis. Retinol favors a more even skin tone and works against wrinkles, even deep ones. Exfoliant: This glycolic acid serum works to speed up the cellular turnover in the skin. Another hallmark of aging is the fact that cells start to reproduce at a slower rate. Glycolic acid works by gently shedding the first layer of the epidermis (made of dead cells) so that new cells can surface. Collagen: Collagen is a protein that must be taken orally. Collagen in skincare products is useless not being able to penetrate the skin because of its large size. Collagen is responsible for skin elasticity. However, as we age, the body starts to produce less of it making the skin saggy. This is why it’s so important to add a collagen supplement to our routine. Collagen is also beneficial for nails, hair , and tendons. Definitely a must have! You have yet to produce a sunscreen, but when if you do, what will it be made of? We’ll definitely come up with sunscreen soon. Our hands are tied when it comes to ingredients choices as the FDA only approved 14 for spf. When it comes to sunscreen we look at Europe which has better formulations (less greasy & easier to spread ) and newest spf ingredients. Are there any dermatologists that you follow? I love the advice by Dr. Dre on YouTube. How long should a consumer stick with a product line before expecting to see results? People sometimes expect to see improvements right away and become frustrated when that doesn’t happen. Results take time to show. No one expects to lose weight by eating healthy once or twice. It’s the daily practice that makes a difference. For skincare I would advise to wait at least a month before deciding a product doesn’t work. There are instances of products that show benefits since the first days of use. These are the hyaluronic acid serum and the exfoliant. Improvements with these 2 are especially visible on someone that has never taken care of their skin the right way. June 2022

SPOTLIGHT with Julianne Michelle THE INAUGURAL MOMMY’S HEART COCKTAIL RECEPTION AND SILENT AUCTION, WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2022

I

t was truly an honor to establish an official organization and mission centered around a cause that is very close to my heart and very important to our future generations, saving innocent children from neglect and/or abuse by the weaponization and civil rights violations of our family court systems. I and fellow actress and child advocate, Tina Louise, hosted the very first event to benefit Mommy’s Heart on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at the very beloved Upper East Side staple, Dorrian’s Red Hand. Jimmy and Danny Dorrian graciously donated all food and wine for the evening, which included a silent auction of film and TV walk-on roles, consultations, acting and speech lessons, gift baskets, holistic and wellness treatments and packages, and more, a video presentation, a beautiful performance of the National Anthem by Patrick Hale, a Mommy’s Heart hugs booth, and gift bags featuring CBD infused candles and hand sanitizers adorned with the Mommy’s Heart logo. The host committee included Michael Madsen, Sally Kirkland, Florence Anthony, Nellie Sciutto, Michael J. Golia, and Tabber Benedict. Advisory Board members include Micheline Lataliza Epstein, MD, MS, FAAFP, Samuel K. Kelley, MD, Michael J. Golia, MD, JD, Kris McDaniel-Miccio, JD, LLM, JS.D, Linnda Durré, Ph.D., Lorraine Silvetz, MSW, Amy Neustein, Ph.D., Donna West, ACS Specialist/Supervisor, Sally Kirkland, Michael Madsen, Tina Louise, Amy Carlson, Sean Stone, Rita Cosby, Valerie McCaffrey, Maggie Norris, Brook Altman, Alicia Jackson, Sanaa Musvee, and Lauren Lawrence. Brookfield, Ana Stone, Scott Stone, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, Maria Fishel, Kenneth Fishel, Maribel Lieberman, Nicole Salmasi, Alice Lutz, Annabel Oreste. The evening started with delightful VIP cocktail hour followed by the formal presentation. Just as in Europe, the celebration commenced with their Debutantes. The theme of this year’s ball was ‘A Night of Love,’ with the goal of sending peace and love to their guests and the world, as well as celebrating the love and friendship of Austrian-American friends and connections. Royal Flowers, in collaboration with Luz Flora, donated 20,000 red roses to emphasize the night’s theme. A donation table was set up to collect funds for Caritas Ukraine. For the first time, the Viennese Opera Ball had a new Austrian wine sponsor, Leo Hillinger Wine. Winemaker Leo Hillinger was also present at the ball. Another event sponsor was Austria’s oldest jewelry designer, A.E. Köchert, and owner Mr. Wolfgang Koechert, who presented the magnificent diamond ‘Sisi’ star brooch at the live auction.

Top opera stars Carolina López Moreno, Iurii Samoilov, Johanna Will, Matthew White, and Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi performed at the 66th Viennese Opera Ball. Iurii Samoilov also performed a moving tribute to his homeland Ukraine, singing a folk song to remind guests of the terrible situation in Ukraine, the importance of remembering what is going on in that part of the world, and to help raise funds during the evening. The Viennese Opera Ball Orchestra was led by conductor Vinicius Kattah. The annual white tie charity gala honors Austria and America’s cultural and economic ties, uniting two continents, two cities, and two centuries in one glamorous evening. It was founded 66 years ago by Austrian immigrants to the United States as a tribute to both their former hometown Vienna and their host city, New York. The gala attracts an international audience that includes diplomats and dignitaries, international corporations, and professionals. For more information, please visit: vienneseoperaball.com. 25A

On Tuesday, April 19, 2022, for the second year, Palm Beach owners Sarah and Andrew Wetenhall and the Colony Hotel co-sponsored Society Photographer Annie Watt’s “Impromptu Portraits - One Night Only” fundraising event. Honoring the importance of a good education, donations were collected to benefit this year’s recipients, The Viner Scholars and postgraduate student Zig Hinds. With the assistance of her fabulous co-hosts Switfy’s Robert Caravaggi, Philanthropic Eleanora Kennedy, Christine Schott and George Ledes, and The Viner Family, Annie welcomed over 200 guests. This year, the amazing work done by Annie and her very talented photographers captured in over 600 photos displayed on the walls and tabletops in the hotel’s beautiful solarium was the focus of the well-attended party. At the same time, the guests sipped Champagne and nibbled on the delicious hors d’oeuvres. When asked why she decided to hold the event, Annie commented with a smile, “Throughout the season, I photograph people attending fundraisers and charity events. Holding this Spring exhibition was an easy concept …everyone who was invited to the event has their portrait “in the exhibition”. I encouraged my guests to “Take Your Photo” and make a generous donation, reminding them that 100 percent of their donations will be going to the charity.” Perched by the door was
