Mandi’s Morning Tea To honour the memory of her friend Mandi Holman, Amanda Singleton has organised a fundraiser for cancer research at Helensburgh’s Red Nectar on Sunday, August 20.

Please tell us about your friendship with Mandi.

Mandi and I played hockey together for Bosco Hockey and later for the Helensburgh Seacliff Hockey Club. Mandi was a strong and determined person, both on and off the field. She was the person to tell you how it is and would give the shirt off her back if you needed it. I was actually at a hockey field watching my daughter play hockey when I got the call from her saying she had breast cancer. It knocked the wind right out of me.

As I listened to her tell me about the treatment plan I tried to reconcile myself with what she had just told me. She was healthy and fit, not a drinker or smoker, so why her? I then thought ‘This is just a blip in life, Mandi will knock this out of the park’ and we would one day look back over the journey as a thing of the past. She finished the call saying, “I’m going to fight this, Amanda, with everything I have.” Of that I had absolutely no doubt.

The journey was long and hard and I don't think I would have been as strong. Even when there was the word “terminal” mentioned I thought she would just keep living, defying the odds because that’s just the sort of person she was.

After receiving the news that sometimes chemo doesn't work on everyone, Mandi advised the oncologist that she herself will tell the doctor when she will stop chemo and until then, the doctor's job was to keep finding options … So Mandi!

What inspired you to organise this fundraiser?

In one of our last conversations Mandi shared her biggest regret about not being able to keep up the fight. This was the one and only moment that Mandi indicated to me that her journey was not going to end well. I have to admit I spent most of her journey in complete denial… choosing to take the “happily ever after” road instead.

As we all know, this doesn’t always happen.

Cancer affects so many people. We all know someone, are related to someone or have even suffered cancer personally. In the moment Mandi shared her regret, something snapped for me – no one should have to go through this; no one should have to see someone go through this.

I then told Mandi that she’s not giving up the fight, only handing over the reins. I promised her that day to continue to fight for a cure for as long as

I had breath in me. It took a year to find the strength to make good on that promise and Mandi’s Morning Tea is the first event in Mandi’s honour to raise funds for breast cancer research.

What can guests expect at Mandi's Morning Tea? Mandi's Morning Tea will be at Red Nectar restaurant in Helensburgh. It’s essentially a morning tea with an assortment of sweet and savoury treats made by Daniel, the owner of Red Nectar. There are heaps of raffle prizes available – massages, gardening vouchers, cleaning vouchers, home furnishings vouchers, personal styling and so much more. All prizes have been donated by local businesses. Obsession, a local online clothing boutique, is launching its Spring collection and putting on a fashion parade.

Which local businesses have contributed?

So far these businesses (below) have offered donations, but every day more offers of donations are coming in, with more great prizes. It will be an exciting event and tickets will be sold and drawn at the event so you need to be there, to win it.

Singer releases debut EP Helensburgh pop singer Charli Jane has released her debut EP, Melting. 2508 reports.

Describe your music to our readers.

My music is quirky pop and my main influences include Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson and Regina Spektor.

Ultimo Tafe where I completed a Diploma in Performance Music. I then completed my Professional Performance Singing Diploma (PDip) with the Australian Guild Of Music, attaining my PDip with High Distinction.

Give us an idea of your background in life and music.

At the age of 19, I began writing songs and I I grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand. I have have been doing various gigs around the local area. been singing all my life and began singing lessons at the age of five and am classically trained. I gained Most recently I have been performing at the Lime a distinction in singing exams with Trinity College, Leaf Cafe at Sunrise Nursery, Coledale Market and was runner-up in Junior Idol in 2006, performed in Red Square in Wollongong. Council election campaign begins Wollongong City Council elections will be held on Saturday, September 9.

Two locals are running for council at the September 9 election, part of an Independent group campaigning on two major principles: working together for the best community outcome and real community consultation.

Sitting Independent councillor, Helensburgh resident Greg Petty, and Stanwell Tops resident Warwick Erwin said they believe: “Council is not a place for politics, it is a place that should provide the resources and infrastructure that residents need … roads, curb and cutters, footpaths, rubbish services.

“All residents must be listened to. All residents deserve the return on the rates they pay. It should not be a fight to get rubbish bins when there is a clear need for them.”

Warwick said: “I live in this community, I work in this community and I will fight for this community to be able to make decisions or have a greater say in decisions that impact on lives, their home and neighbourhoods.” 2508

Railway tunnel to be restored Plans are afoot to restore and transform the old railway tunnel between Otford and Stanwell Park into a shared cycling and walking path, part of the Grand Pacific Walk.

Heathcote MP Lee Evans and Wollongong City Councillor Leigh Colacino visited the historic 1.8m-long train tunnel on July 3 to publicise state government plans to restore it.

Community activist Warwick Erwin said funds for the tunnel restoration project – $1.5m in 17/18 and $1.5m in 18/19 – were from the $63m Active Transport budget. No planning, costing or community consultation had been done, he said.

Work on stage one of the Grand Pacific Walk, which will one day link the Royal National Park to Lake Illawarra, started in June. (Stage one links Stanwell Park to Coalcliff.) 2508

Meet the Otford filmmaker delighting audiences with her quirky on-screen creations

The 2508 photo shoot is an unusual occasion for Otford’s Anya Beyersdorf. Usually, this awardwinning filmmaker is behind the camera, giving the orders, not taking them. But – a true professional – she is relaxed and friendly and more than happy to oblige.

Anya started making movies a few years back but has only recently taking on writing and directing duties. And her switch from acting to behind-the-camera work has paid off.

She was one of four filmmakers who each received $50,000 to make a short film, as part of the first Lexus Short Film Fellowship. Her latest movie, How The Light Gets In, made with the help of generous 2508 locals, is the result. In June of this year, the short film had its debut at this year’s 64th Sydney Film Festival, screening at the Opera Quays’ Dendy Cinema.

How the Light Gets In has also been garnering acclaim at travelling film festivals, the most recent

of which was held in Wollongong, in June.

Anya kindly took time to answers 2508’s questions.

Tell our readers a bit about yourself.

We’ve been living in Otford for two years now, love it – we are lifers, for sure. I grew up in the country.

It’s been a lifelong problem I’ve been trying to solve – how to live in the country in a real bush village but still be able to take meetings etc in the city.

When we stumbled on Otford all our Christmases came at once! We love it here.

How did you become involved in making movies?

I started off in journalism, changed my mind, started churning out strange video art at uni instead of documentary. Moved to Melbourne and fell into acting for a while, and just became so fascinated with narrative. It took me a while to swap to the other side of the camera, it’s only been a recent thing in the past three years that I started

What’s the most challenging aspect of movie-making?

And what’s the most rewarding?

I find the actual filming days the hardest – they are long and exhausting and really dramatic, but they are also the most rewarding! You plan the hell out of it, set all the pieces up, call action, hold on and hope for the best!

Tell us about your most recent film, How the Light Gets In. The film was made as part of the Lexus Australia Short Film Fellowship, which I was lucky enough to win last year at the Sydney Film Festival. The prize was $50,000 to make a short film.

I had this idea about a woman who wakes up in the middle of the night with her finger tips glowing – this kind of spooky light from within, that takes over her life as it takes over her body. We filmed it in Helensburgh and the support from the community was just amazing – we had a bunch of crew, miniature ponies, locations, beautiful vintage cars. I wouldn’t have been able to make it if the locals hadn’t helped so much. I’m really grateful.

The film screened at the Sydney Film Festival in June at the State Theatre to 2000 people – it was just incredible. And then the festival took it on the road with the travelling film festival to Wollongong – it screened on opening night before Ali’s Wedding (Australia’s first Muslim rom-com).

What have been some of your movie-making milestones?

I was lucky enough to win an Australian Writer’s Guild award for one of the short scripts I wrote at uni when I was doing my Masters – so that was a real confidence boost and people kind of took notice. Gayby did well at fests overseas and also writing and directing. I was lucky to write a few Tropfest released it online; it’s had something like scripts that people liked enough to help me make 70,000 views I noticed the other day, so that’s cool them, which is the best way to start I think. too! What’s new at the zoo Symbio Wildlife Park’s Kevin Fallon reports.

We are happy to announce that these school holidays we completed work on, and officially opened, two new exciting projects: a Bush Bird aviary, home to a variety of endangered Australian bush birds; and an amazing, high-quality new toilet facility.

The bush bird aviary is filled with a lively and energetic range of birds, from the majestic turquoise parrot, through to finches, peaceful doves and inland dotterels, which are a grounddwelling bird. In coming months, the aviary will also become home to the critically endangered regent honeyeater.

The goal of this exhibit is to provide a habitat in

which birds can flourish and breed, another step in expanding on our conservation breeding programs.

This will all help to increase the captivemanaged species for the future.

The aviary has an interior you’d be forgiven for believing is the heart of outback Australia. We are so pleased with the result and how well the construction turned out, and the birds are all settling in and making themselves at home.

We’ve wanted to build a new toilet facility for quite some time now and, as many of you who have visited over the weekends or during school holidays would know, we couldn’t wait any longer.

Best pie bake-off!

Dust off your rolling pins. The search is on for the Illawarra’s best apple pie and Sunday, August 20, is judgement day. Jo Fahey reports.

Calling all local apple pie champions!

Darkes Glenbernie Orchard and Stanwell Park Country Woman’s Association are teaming up again to look for the best Apple Pie in the Illawarra.

Last year’s champion pie makers will be looking to defend their titles!

The orchard packing shed will be transformed on August 20 into a judging area and will also serve slices of delicious pie with lashings of custard cream and ice-cream. Wash the pies down with great local coffee, while the kids play in the jumping castle. Lunch will be available, as well as a few other surprises and entertainments. Winning entries will be auctioned in an effort to raise money for the Country Women’s Association.

One of the biggest requests I get as a landscape designer is for a hedge. Whether it is to be used as a wind break, privacy screen or in place of a fence, there are so many species to choose from.

When considering your hedge, why not include plants that are native, can be harvested to be eaten and create a habitat for birds.

If using the plants to create a dense hedge then plants are usually planted at one metre centres or one metre apart, starting half a metre from the outside edge.

To ensure a healthy hedge and uniform growth I dig a trench, rather than individual holes. This allows for soil improvement with compost, native soil if required and manure, such as cow manure.

This can all be mixed into the soil removed from the trench before backfilling once plants are put in place.

Once planted, water in well. NEVER stomp around your plants as this compacts the soil that the new roots need to move through to establish themselves.

Mulch the plants well with 100mm of mulch of your choice, ensuring you keep it 50mm from the stems of the plants to prevent collar rot.

Water through the first hot season to ensure they send their roots deep into the soil.

3 OF THE BEST NATIVE EDIBLE HEDGE PLANT CHOICES 1. Lilly pillies There are two varieties of lilly pillies which are great for hedges, Acmena smithii and cultivars and Syzygium species and cultivars. Two favourites in these groups are: Acmena smithii (or Cherry Surprise) can be pruned to anything from 1-4 metres. It has cherry-red new growth and creates a dense hedge with foliage to the ground. White flowers in spring are followed by an edible berry used in jams and cordials.

Syzygium paniculatum (or Backyard Bliss) grows 3-4 metres with bronze new growth and larger edible fruit used in baking, jam and cordials.

Prune regularly to maintain a bushy habit to the ground and dense foliage.

2. Backhousia species Backhousia citriodora, Lemon Myrtle; Backhousia myrtifolia, Cinnamon Myrtle; and Backhousia anisata, Aniseed Myrtle are all great hedging plants with edible leaves.

Lemon Myrtle is a favourite of mine and can be used in drinks, baking and main dishes.

3. Podocarpus elatus, Illawarra plum Dense fine foliage with edible berries in summer.

Slower growing but makes a stunning hedge. The fruit makes delicious jam and dessert syrup.

I am a Northern Illawarra native via Stanwell Tops, now living in Helensburgh.

Metallurgist by profession with a couple of stints in the corporate world including overseas assignments in the US and China with a USmultinational in supply chain, product management and global pricing before coming home to become the licencee of the Helensburgh Post Office a little over 13 years ago.

How long have you been an NICC member?

Over 12 years.

What do you enjoy about being part of the chamber?

I have always had a keen interest in what other people do for a living and over my time as a small business owner I have developed the view that small businesses must work together, buy from each other and form business and social relationships support each other and solve mutual or common problems.

NICC provides the perfect forum for networking and developing those links with other local small businesses.

What can NICC offer a local small business?

Our main aim is to drive business to our membership. NICC is the ideal forum for local small business to connect to develop and expand local commerce and industry.

NICC was a finalist in the 2016 Illawarra Business Awards and in the 2017 Australia Day Awards which we see as formal recognition of the excellent standing of our Chamber within the wider Wollongong business community.

Marketing needn’t be scary, Susie Fagan writes.

Social media, SEO, specialty publications – have I lost you yet? I wouldn’t blame you if I had, as the big, bad but wonderful world of marketing can be a scary one.

Particularly for small businesses that have enough stress trying to stay in the plus without worrying about how to get another Like on Facebook.

The good news (hurrah!) is the amount of low-cost and even free (double hurrah!) opportunities to connect with your customers, or potential customers, are massive – you just need to know where to start.

The first step is to ask: “What?” What is it you want to achieve exactly? Be specific.

Then ask: “Who?” Who is your target market?

Be really specific here. You can get creative, but be real. Base it on your current most common customers or clients or your ideal customer.

Then ask: “Why?” Why would they want to purchase your product or service? Ask them or

look at reviews online and take note of the common themes and language (and trends) and use this in your marketing. Research others in your industry and find your point of difference.

Then ask: “Where?” Where are they hanging out – both on and offline? Next, choose where you will be present, but be realistic. Don’t try to be on or at everything. It’s much more effective to do less but to do it well and with a purpose.

Have a plan. The thought of creating a lengthy marketing plan and calendar makes most small business owners cringe, but there are lots of basic yet very effective ones (and free examples online).

Print and review your plan regularly (including with staff, if applicable) and stick the calendar in your workspace to ensure you stay on track, plus remember what the hell you’re supposed to be doing, when and why. Thinking of launching your own business? Stanwell Park accountant Matthew Faulkner shares some advice.

1. Have a job as well at the start.

You will know when the business has become big enough to take a year’s leave without pay or resign.

registering is waving a flag to say you are relatively small. Depending on the industry you operate in, choosing to register for GST with a low turnover might be a good thing to do to keep everyone guessing.

2. Assuming the business itself is something you can do, the hardest part will be ‘hunting and gathering’ for clients. You may consider buying an existing business so that you have a client base to work with. Not everyone can do that, but starting from scratch is much harder and that’s where the other job is handy. A Facebook page (which is free!) is becoming more important than a website or getting onto the first page of a Google search. The best form of advertising you can do is look after existing clients. Love the ones you’re with! They will spread the word about whether you are good or bad. Be happy for the business to live or die by its reputation.

4. ‘Failing to plan is a plan to fail’. Find business plan templates and more at www.business.gov.au.

5. There are several compulsory issues to tick off: obtaining all appropriate licences, arrange public liability insurance, get an Australian Business Number (ABN) from the Australian Business Register and maybe a Trading Name from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission if you don’t just use your own name. A tax agent is another must!

6. Lastly, as an entrepreneur, accept that the majority of your current leisure time will be replaced with work!

Voice of experience Helensburgh’s John Carlson, of Small Business Accountants, has been an accountant for 50 years. Here are his five top tips.

1. Know and understand the reporting timelines for your business. Know when your BAS are due, when your tax return is due, when your insurances are due, when your registration and renewals are due. Ensuring you meet your reporting deadlines will help you avoid penalties and fines from the Australian Taxation Office and other government bodies.

2. Discuss with your accountant the best reporting methods for your business. There is no hard and fast rule on this and there are many products available to assist small business from a simple spreadsheet through to Cloud-based accounting software. Do what you feel comfortable with; the focus of your business should be your business not the reporting of it.

3. As we start a new financial year take some time to assess your business, write a budget, review your branding, know your market and your business’s place in it, update your business plan, know where you want your business to take you, discuss with your accountant any concessions you may be eligible for. In short, plan.

4. Keep a line of communication open with your accountant. A quick call can save you time and money down the line. We are here to help, here as a business partner.

5. Make time for family and holidays. Take some time to turn off your phone and take a break, spend time with family, have a holiday. Don’t let your small business consume you because then you will become stale. 2508

THE IMPORTANCE OF WRITING

Lawyer Lynda Babister stresses the importance of written agreements for business owners.

By their very nature, small businesses have interactions with many different people and companies. Buying products, employing staff, selling goods or services, online sales and information provided on websites are just a few.

While a business venture is going well, and all parties are in agreement, you probably don’t “need” a written contract. However, as soon as there is a difference of opinion or something goes wrong, there can be problems.

A written agreement can be as comprehensive or detailed as you want it to be. The details you need to put into a written agreement vary; agreements can include payment terms, control of your trademark, employment terms and what happens if something goes wrong. Terms and conditions on your website are also important.

If a legal dispute does occur, not having a written contract can make sorting it out complicated and

expensive. A verbal contract is valid but it is more complicated to prove. It will take longer to go through those details with your lawyer. You would then make detailed statements, to prove whether there was an agreement on every point, possibly require witnesses to make statements. All of this increases the costs. It is far better to spend a few thousand dollars at the start, getting it right, than spend tens of thousands later trying to sort it out.

Any business agreement can and should be reduced to writing. It makes running the business simpler, and easier. It can also possibly save your business if something goes wrong. 2508

Plan for a good Will Solicitor Neil Lyon has been helping people write their Wills for 40 years. Here, he offers expert tips.

1. If you have children under 18 years consider appointing one or more persons as their guardians.

If both of their parents then die, a family relative can act as the guardians of the children until the children attain 18 years.

2. Investigate whether your superannuation entitlements need to be mentioned in your Will or need to be mentioned in a separate document called a Binding Nomination of Beneficiaries form, which should be provided to the manager who keeps the records of the superannuation fund in which your monies are invested.

If you have any doubts, please discuss them with your solicitor when you make your Will.

Sometimes such forms may be out of date and need to be replaced. Sometimes such forms may be legally ineffective because they don’t comply with the rules of the superannuation fund where your monies are invested.

3. If you operate a business as either a sole trader or in partnership consider whether the business would need to be closed down after your death.

Discuss this with your solicitor.

4. Consider whether or not your executor will need to borrow monies after your death, especially if you run a business. If so normally your Will may need to specifically authorise your executor to borrow monies from a bank and this can apply to the continuation of any overdraft accounts or other loan accounts that you may now have but not want to be cancelled by the bank soon after your death.

If you have such loans discuss them with your solicitor and ask if a power to borrow monies is required in your Will.

There are sometimes many different issues that a solicitor can help you with to ensure that your Will is legally valid and going to be effective to achieve what you want it to do after your death. Obtaining legal advice may help you to deal with the particular issues or concerns that you have. 2508

Money for bags Local businesses are stepping up to drive sustainable change in our region.

Symbio Wildlife Park, Hillen Staff Solutions and Belle Property Thirroul have funded the launch of Boomerang Bags Coal Coast, a local initiative to turn pre-loved fabric into sustainable alternatives to plastic bags.

Their donations have been used to buy labels and store displays for the bags.

“I think it is a wonderful idea and something that brings the community together to do something for the environment and reduce the amount of plastic bags we use,” Wendy Lepre, of Belle Property Thirroul, said. “I think the more people that start to use them will encourage others to do so as well, so it becomes a chain reaction – and before long everyone will want one.

Karen Hillen, owner of Hillen Staff Solutions, said: “I am very happy to support local organisations that are doing great things in the community and I love the fact that I can help in some small way.”

local stores, from Manic Organic in Wonoona to Coal Coast Emporium in Helensburgh.

“Also, exciting news earlier this month when Coles, Woolies and Harris Farm announced they would phase out single-use plastic,” said Wendy Gergos, co-leader of Boomerang Bags Coal Coast.

Dr Rip’s Science of the Surf The Mystery of Coalcliff, part 2, by Dr Rob Brander.

There is a fantastic video on YouTube called Coalcliff – Paradise Found by Noel Leeder, who was works manager of the Cokeworks back in the 1960s and a prominent Coalcliff resident (hence Leeder Park near the pool). It has amazing footage of Coalcliff Beach from the early 1960s, including this poorly stitched together screen grab above (by me). It’s hard to believe it’s the same beach we see today! Last month the mystery of Coalcliff was ‘Where have all the gravels and boulders come from?’ This month it’s ‘Where has all the sand gone?’

This picture and the movie footage shows a lovely, wide, flat, golden sandy beach with a low foredune and a bunch of shacks that no longer exist. There’s lots of sand, it’s nice and shallow, and conditions are perfect for bodysurfing and splashing around with kids. It looks almost like Coledale Beach and is dramatically different to what it looks like today. There’s no steep beachface, no gravels and no boulders in the shallows. So what happened?

Once again, I’m a bit stumped. It’s possible that a massive coastal storm occurred and large waves and currents eroded the sand from the beach and

dumped it far enough offshore that it either couldn’t return or was transported up or down the coast and out of the local system. There were some famous storms in 1974 that wreaked havoc all along the NSW coast. Were these the cause? Or was it a storm in the 1960s? Would a catastrophic storm strip away all of the sand, revealing gravels and boulders that were lying underneath? Probably not, if anything it would expose the underlying sandstone rock platform. Regardless, after a storm all beaches experience sand recovery and Coalcliff still has some sand so it didn’t all disappear, but the gravels and boulders certainly didn’t move from the seabed onto the beach. They must have come from somewhere else.

A reader contacted me after last month’s article with some fascinating information. A long-time local, he remembers a large flood in Stony Creek in the 1960s that carried gravels and boulders onto that lovely sandy beach and after that, the beach was never the same. I’d like to know more about the cause of that flood!

If it was related to a coastal storm, then it’s possible that the combination of storm erosion of the beach and the addition of gravels and boulders from the Creek flood would have immediately created a steeper beachface. This would have completely changed the wave and current dynamics along the beach that, along with the boulders, would have inhibited the return of sand to the beach. But I’m just guessing – please contact me if you have any more info or ideas! One thing about those boulders – they could be the key to returning Coalcliff to its natural state, but that’s a story for next month’s issue.

Southerly hits city

A group of Illawarra artists plans to take Sydney by storm.

Fresh like a Southerly: Out of the Illawarra 2017 will showcase the work of 27 contemporary professional artists from the Illawarra at NSW Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney. Open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, from August 1 to 25.

All artists are members of the Illawarra Association for the Visual Arts (IAVA), a cooperative organisation led by Lara Seresin and formed seven years ago to cultivate and promote the region’s outstanding contemporary visual art.

The exhibition will feature paintings, drawings, photographs, prints and multimedia works.

What is the SPAT Photography club?

It’s about a year old. That this area – surely one of the most beautiful and photogenic places in the country, if not the world – didn’t already have a club was a bit astonishing.

The club’s aim is really simple and it’s still nicely small and intimate. It is for people who enjoy taking photos to have some fun, get together and get to know their cameras a bit better. It doesn’t really matter what kind of camera you have or what your level of expertise is – although we have some professional members, most of us are newbies in one way or another. If you’re happier using your smartphone, a drone, top-of-the-line equipment or a point-and-shoot, it doesn’t matter. In fact, it’s a good thing because it gives us all a chance to learn a little bit more and be excited by all the things we can do with all the different technologies available.

How can I get involved?

We have a monthly theme, which allows everyone to find their own places and best times. The theme for July was water – any kind of water: water in a cup, flowing from a shower, in a bath, shooting from a fountain, in a puddle, on a leaf, the ocean, a swimming pool, a lake, a creek.

We then get together at the end of the month to have a look at what we’ve each done, have a chat, some wine and nibbles. There is also an opportunity during the month to get together for a photoshoot which is also great fun. Just go out and take photos, then join us for a fun evening.

On Thursday, June 1, NINA’s Café Club Group held a special fundraiser day for Tear Australia. On the day the group raised a whopping $830. The group together decided what they would purchase for the charity and bought items such as chickens, vegetable gardens, teacher training, safe water, adult literacy, goats, maternal and child health care, toilets, health worker and community school classes. All clients and volunteers had a wonderful day and all dressed in colourful clothing and scarves to get into the theme. NPWS calls for feedback Public get their say on the day-to-day management of three popular Sydney parks.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has called for feedback on the future management of Royal National Park, Heathcote National Park and Garawarra State Conservation Area.

NPWS executive director Robert Quirk said the department’s discussion papers addressed issues that affected the parks’ day-to-day management.

“The discussion papers are themed into six topics – recreational activities, protecting park values, mountain biking, visitor destinations, commercial activities and Aboriginal cultural heritage and landscapes – with each paper outlining a range of ideas.

“Options proposed in the discussion papers range from new strategies for mountain biking, concepts for commercial and recreational activities such as expanding camping opportunities, to how we might work with Aboriginal people to protect cultural heritage and support Aboriginal people in connecting to Country.

“The discussion papers will be available online for community feedback [until August 28]. There will be another opportunity for the public to have their say when the draft plan of management is exhibited.”

The Helensburgh Off Road Cycle Club (HORCC) released a statement to 2508, in response to the NPWS discussion papers, saying: “[HORCC] wholeheartedly agrees that the National Parks and Wildlife Service needs to implement an updated plan to adequately manage the proliferation of mountain bike riding in the areas of the Royal National Park and the Garawarra State Conservation Area.

“The Helensburgh Off Road Cycling Club recommends that to help the NPWS to achieve the Mountain Bike Network the NPWS should consider the following: “Clearly differentiating between the Royal National Park and Garawarra areas in the plan of management to alleviate concerns of other stakeholders caused by mountain bike riding in the RNP. Garawarra State Conservation Area was

originally segregated from the Royal National Park with the intention of having an area dedicated for recreational use.

“The land in the Garawarra State Conservation Area is also pre disturbed, with Helensburgh coal mine located under the Garawarra area.

“Target the Garawarra area as the prime location for future expansion of the MTB trails to minimise impacts on the historically protected Royal National Park.

“Treat previously disturbed soil – including disused tracks, trails, access paths – differently to untouched parkland to minimise the costs and times of the approval process.

“Allow the Helensburgh Off Road Cycle Club to work collaboratively with the NPWS to fund-raise, construct and maintain trails authorised by NPWS to minimise costs for NPWS. “Ensure that proposals are dealt with in a timely manner by National Parks.

Children’s author Sue Whiting will be at the Thirroul Readers and Writers Festival this month. Young fans are invited to join her at the PJ and Pizza party at Thirroul Library on August 25.

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I have lived in Stanwell Park for almost 30 years, and don’t plan on leaving any time soon!

I love the beach and the bush, enjoy walking, kayaking and dancing. But my favourite thing of all is a story – I love reading, telling and of course, writing stories – especially stories for children.

I first became interested in children’s books when I was a primary school teacher. In the beginning, this passion was all about connecting young readers with books and helping them along the path to becoming life-long readers. Eventually though, this interest in kids’ books led me to wanting to write my own books for children, and I have been writing and publishing since 2000.

I write fiction and nonfiction, picture books through to young adult. I also work from home as a freelance editor, writing coach and mentor.

As a primary school teacher, you must have gained great insights into your target market. What did you learn about kids’ likes and dislikes when it comes to reading?

I think I learnt two main things from my time as a teacher. Firstly, kids love stories.

The second thing I learnt is that kids know what they like in a story and, as readers, they will drop a book the moment it disappoints them, gets confusing or boring. They aren’t as persistent as adult readers. So you have to hook them, and then work hard to keep them hooked. No boring bits!

Which books did you love as child – which ones captured your imagination and inspired a desire to write?

I loved Enid Blyton’s Famous Five series as a child.

This series turned me into a reader. I loved the adventure and also the freedom and courage of the child characters. Reading taught me a lot about

writing, but it was picture books like Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak that I discovered when I first started teaching that inspired me to write.

It is that cold time of year again, and Helensburgh VIEW Club had its “Christmas in July”, with guests Yvonne White, National Councillor, and Emma from Learning for Life.

Emma took delivery of books, stationery and the many colourful knitted and crocheted rugs from our members for The Smith Family to distribute.

We welcomed new members Mary, Leonie and Wendy. Thank you Patty for the nursery rhyme trivia, and to Nerida for the little “Christmas puddings”. Tables were decorated and traditional ham and turkey were served, with plum puddings.

In July, we sadly bade farewell to Helen and Rick Richardson as they made their move to Mudgee. Helen has been a member and office bearer since our Club began 26 years ago, and she will be greatly missed. We wish them well in their new home, with good health and happiness in a lovely part of NSW. They were both also long time volunteers at NINA (Northern Illawarra Neighbour Aid).

Author of children’s books and artist, Jo Oliver, was the Speaker at the June meeting. She spoke about the subject of her first adult book, Miss Jessie Traill, who was famous for her delicate black and white prints. Jessie was trained by famous Australian artists Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts, and in London, Frank Brangwyn.

For the whole of WW1 she served in hospitals in England and France with the VADs (Voluntary Aid Detachment). It is said that she was the influence for Albert Namatjira to paint, when he was her camel boy in Central Australia. She was involved in many fundraising activities in Victoria.

The CWA hall in Stanwell Park was opened in 1957 as a health clinic for mothers and babies. These days it is a valuable community space for weddings and events, Stanwell Park Arts Theatre (SPAT) rehearsals and performances, exercise and martial arts classes.

The hall has undergone improvements over time and now it requires a roof replacement and a toilet facilities upgrade.

This is a big project and has been many months in the planning.

The CWA’s NSW State Office is subsidising the cost of roof replacement, however, we are still in need of a significant amount of funding to refurbish the bathrooms.

SPAT has generously and enthusiastically helped us to raise $1,200 at their recent performance, and we are enormously grateful for their help. We also have a donation tin at Uluwatu Blue Café in Stanwell Park and are seeking to place tins with other local businesses.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! In conjunction with Glenbernie Orchard, the CWA will be hosting an Apple Pie competition; the event will be held at Glenbernie Orchard on Sunday, 20 August and all proceeds will go toward CWA hall renovations and nominated charities.

Various competition categories are available and Apple Pies will be available for purchase on the day along with coffee and tea, apple cider, apples, honey and rides for the children. This is a great day out for all the family so please come along and support our wonderful local apple orchard – either as a competitor or as an apple pie enthusiast!

Spotlight on sustainability Earlier this year, Switched On Tyres became Tyre Stewardship Australia accredited, which means the Helensburgh business is part of a voluntary scheme to ensure old tyres are recycled. Switched On Tyre’s Tanya Parry told 2508 more.

How many tyres you have recycled since signing up to TSA? Approximately 400 end-of-life tyres, including both passenger vehicle tyres and light truck tyres.

What has customer response been like?

Brilliant! Customers enjoy knowing that choosing to buy new tyres from an accredited TSA tyre retailer (such as Switched On Tyres), means that their old, end-of-life tyres do not to go to landfill and rather are recycled in an environmentally sustainable manner.

When TSA says tyres are recycled in “an environmentally sustainable way”, what does that mean?

Tyres are collected from Switched On Tyres and sent to be recycled in an environmentally

sustainable manner, in accordance with the NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Tyres are tracked by us via an online EPA portal and do not go to landfill. Netballers excel Helensburgh Netball Club continues its successful run to semis, Kristy Poole reports.

The Helensburgh Netball Club is enjoying a great season as the players continue to grow and develop as individuals and team players.

Of our 12 teams, nine have consistently held their position in the top four.

Netball allows players to develop team work, agility, fitness and have some fun together. It’s the one game where every player is an important part of the team.

This year the club began skills training for five- to 10-year-old players who are keen to learn how to play the game but aren’t yet old enough to enter the competition. A teacher with experience in presenting the program started the training and it’s a big hit; lots of girls have signed up. The skills training takes place on Saturday mornings at the netball courts in Helensburgh from 10am to 11am.

Games will be played every Tuesday night at the local courts until Christmas.

This is a social competition where you can play for competition or fun. All you need to do is get together a team of ladies, or sign up as an individual and we’ll help you find a team. No experience is necessary.

Cost is $90 for registration (includes insurance with Netball NSW), or $45 if you are already registered in a competition this year. Minimum playing age is 16 years old.

Top prep in World lead-up BMX star Saya Sakakibara prepares for her next huge challenge: the World Championships. Saya reports.

I’m writing this about two weeks before the 2017 World Championships, being held in South Carolina, USA, from July 25 to 30. I’m excited as I will soon be boarding the plane to go there.

Since the last World Championships (in Colombia, May 2016), there has been plenty of time for me to reflect on my experience there. It did not end exactly how I had planned: I suffered two concussions during official practice, less than 24 hours apart, and I had to watch the rest of the championships from the sidelines. It was heartbreaking not being able to compete but, to be honest, I was not physically and mentally ready to conquer that track and it had taken me by surprise how technical and demanding it was.

This year is a little different.

Having had the opportunity, at the end of 2016, to race at this year’s World Championship track in Rock Hill, South Carolina, it definitely gave me a good insight into the skills and requirements needed to not only get through this track, but to get through it fast.

The track is completely different to the World Championship track in Colombia; at Rock Hill, there are more areas for me to pedal and the jumps seem to suit my strengths.

brother Kai, I was able to focus on fixing my weaknesses to get me in prime condition. I’m definitely very confident in my preparation coming into this year’s World Championships and I’ve never felt better. I can’t wait to give it my 100 percent and see what happens!

Tradies social golf

Another great winter’s morning for golf with the next round of our match play completed. The groundsman appeared to have adjusted the cut on the greens as it was causing some dismay among the ranks as the old hands were heard to comment: “Campbell’s Bluebird* was never this fast”. (* Donald Campbell set numerous world speed records – on land (in Bluebird CN7) and water (in Bluebird K7) – in the 50s and 60s.)

When Rod won with 49 stableford points, Steve was overheard ordering a testing kit (to check Rod for performance-enhancing drugs). Enjoy the Gallardo’s Pizza, Rod. The Helensburgh Butchers prize went to Keith and Paul, on 38 and 37 respectively. The Steve McRae Golf super pin prize is unclaimed, with the dozen golf balls jackpotting each month.

Steve recorded the longest drive in A grade; Mick hit the longest drive for B grade.

Jammu and Ken won best front and back 9 holes with Bob heading to Helensburgh Driving Range to improve his game. Roger, Rod, Steve and Mick were match-play winners.

Next game – on August 12 at 7am – is a stroke and the second Championship round. Remember to arrive early so Mick can prepare the various cards.

It’s annoying when you love playing golf but you’re unable to participate – that’s when you really want to hit the living daylights out of a ball! At the moment I’m missing golf so I’ve been getting the scoop from the Prez. This month he gave himself a big pat on the back, due to taking out 1st place and first round of the championships. I suppose I’d do the same!

Jammu Fagerstrom was in 2nd place and Pete Gardner cruised to 3rd. Frank Zorro, Pete Gardner, Scotty G, Kevy ‘Cyclone’ Brown, Dave ‘Ouch’ Thorn and the Prez G cleaned up the minor prizes. Cool art is the Surefire way Surefire Boards (and their riders) have impressed at recent SUP comps. Surefire Boards owner Mick Slattery reports on a new creative partnership with artist Matt Gillett.

I’ve always added my own artwork to my boards and I like to offer people something different and bright to liven up and personalise new surfboards and SUP boards.

My own surfboards and SUP boards have always been painted up with Posca pens (acrylic art pens with ink that dries waterproof) but I was struggling to find the time in recent years to offer this to others until my company teamed up with local artist Matt Gillett. Matt does amazing Posca paint work on our boards; he seems to be able to tap into a person’s personality and nail every design.

Using Posca paint pens allows a lot of detail and blending that can’t be achieved with painting on the foam or using a spray gun.

Everyone is blown away with the artwork.

Since starting a co-lab with Matt, most Surefire boards go out the door with a heap of colour. 2508
