has been a member of Stanwell Park Arts Theatre (S.P.A.T.) for 13 years and has held many positions in S.P.A.T. a few of them being Treasurer, President and now Communication Officer. Being part of a small non-for-profit organisation such as S.P.A.T has given him the opportunity to share creative and performing arts skills with others. Cameron has lived in the 2508 area for 16 years and sees the value of contributing and promoting groups just like S.P.A.T. Read his report on page 31.

She has lived in Helensburgh since 2004, where she now lives with her husband and two children. Heather has a background in marketing, publishing and distribution, and currently works from home as a magazine promotions manager. As a former Brownie and Guide in her childhood, Heather took on the role of publicity officer for Helensburgh Girl Guides after her daughter joined the unit in 2016. Read her report on page 23.

No need to hibernate – there are new eateries and nights out to enjoy in the Illawarra, Cath Hill reports..

Tradies Helensburgh is launching new menu items in early July. Look out for caprese bruschetta, san choy bow, vegetarian pasta, bangers and mash, plus a kids treat, hot dogs and chips (pictured).

Helensburgh has new dining options too. Alcara Caffe e Ristorante (5/115 Parkes Street) is hosting a traditional Italian menu on fortnightly Friday nights and on Thursdays Raya Thai (4/115-119 Parkes Street) will serve a special Asian street food menu (in addition to the normal menu).

Prep for Pie Day

Make pastry and build the pie.

Sift flours with a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl. Rub butter into flour with your fingertips.

Lift mixture high above the bowl as you rub, to incorporate air into the pastry and make it lighter.

Continue until mixture resembles fine your skills now! breadcrumbs. Stir in sugar.

To help you I have put together an easy basic Lightly beat 1 egg with 1 tablespoon chilled recipe that will get you on your way! Mums, dads and kids are all welcome to enter. Soup garners earthy flavours and is oh-so-simple to make for a cold wintry night.

There is nothing better than a hearty soup for the winter months. Inspired by the warm elements of Morocco, my Chickpea and Sweet Potato Spiced MAKE YOUR OWN CHICKEN STOCK! Here’s a recipe for an immunityboosting broth, writes Stephanie Meades, owner of the Life Wellness Co. and volunteers co-ordinator at Thirroul’s Flame Tree Food Co-op.

INGREDIENTS: 1 whole chicken (free range, organic

if possible); 2-4 chicken feet/necks, optional (for added gelatine); 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar; 2 onions; 2 carrots; 4 celery stalks; bouquet garni (tied with cooking twine); 1-2 tsp sea salt; parsley.

CHICKPEA AND SWEET POTATO SPICED SOUP • 1 red onion, chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tbsp. butter • 1.5 litre chicken stock • 1 medium sweet potato (600g), chopped • 2 cups cooked chickpeas • ½ tsp. curry powder • 1 tsp. nutmeg • 2 tsp. smoked paprika • 1 tsp. cumin seeds • 1 tsp. honey METHOD:

1. Melt butter in a pot and add the red onion and garlic. Sauté until caramelised.

2. Add the chicken stock, sweet potato and chickpeas, spices and honey. Simmer for 25 to 30 mins.

3. Blitz the soup in a blender until smooth, season to taste and serve with a crusty bread of your choice and a dollop of cream. 2508 METHOD: In a big pot, place chicken and vegetables,

bouquet garni, vinegar and fill with water to cover contents. Allow pot and contents to stand for 30 minutes, giving the raw apple cider vinegar time to draw minerals out of the bones, then heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 1½ to 2 hours. Add parsley and salt during the last 10 minutes. Remove the chicken and other large parts. Debone and reserve the meat for eating.

Strain stock through a sieve and freeze in portions until ready to use. 2508

Mission Men’s Shed accomplished Helensburgh Men’s Shed is now part of the community, Paul Blanksby reports.

Fulfilling a local need, the Helensburgh Men’s Shed is serving the 2508 community by providing a facility in which men can come together, pursue hobbies, undertake community projects and talk with mates in order to facilitate longer, more active, healthier and happier lives.

Helensburgh Men’s Shed (HMS) is now running strongly at its new location, Stanwell Park Anglican Church Hall. HMS, a not-for-profit joint initiative of Hope Church and Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Anglican Church, has been operating since September 2016. We are AMSA (Australian Men’s Shed Association) members and have more than 50 members from the 2508 community.

Our goal is to advance the health and well-being of our members by providing a safe and happy environment where skilled and unskilled men can, in the company of other men, pursue hobbies, pastimes and interests, learn new skills, and practise and pass on old skills.

Each Monday and Tuesday, between 9am and 3pm, up to 15 men, from a range of trades and education, work shoulder to shoulder on projects and activities at the Shed, enjoying each other’s company.

The Shed’s projects have included building possum houses (great for relocating that lovely brush-tail in your roof!), and round Cypress-pine bar and coffee tables; restoring the local Christian Surfers group ping-pong table; making table/stools from recycled timber, an Adirondack seat

(American wood plank chair), a fantastic six-kiddie play car for the Kids Korner preschool, rustic tea-light candle holders, and cute little rolling pins for budding young cooks. We are fortunate to have skilled former tradesmen and engineers as our members, enabling training to be carried out on the large range of wood- and metal-working tools that the Shed has available.

The Shed’s men have also proved themselves handy, assisting in the repair of members’ lawn-mowers and garden edgers, helping with lawn-mowing and gardening, doing small house repairs and enjoying the challenge of the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle, with the invaluable assistance of their wives and partners.

It has been great to be involved with these activities, and also to see the Shed assist with the mental and physical health of those in the 2508 community. We are actively involved in AMSA Mental Health Weeks, hold evening meals with guest speakers on a variety of men’s health issues, and host healthcare professionals during our Shed Day lunches, all which enable men to learn about their own health and well-being.

The government, both local and state, has been of great assistance and benefit during the initial few months of the Shed’s life, and many thanks are due to local Member for Heathcote Lee Evans, Wollongong City Councillor Leigh Colacino and Minister for Mental Health, Women, and Ageing, Tanya Davies, for their help. The HMS is searching

the Helensburgh area for suitable land or an existing building in which to establish a long-term men’s activities facility, ideally alongside a community garden area for the whole family to enjoy.

Beyond all these things, the Shed has become a haven for men to come and share, with other men, their concerns, difficulties and issues that life throws at them. Sometimes someone will simply attend, watch, listen, enjoy a cuppa and a biscuit – and talk through a problem in their life. In a fantastic collaboration between a circus star and an arborist, Charlie Truscott has launched a new performance company with the help of her husband, Ben Abeleven.

Two years ago, 2508 interviewed Charlie Truscott about her plans to start a circus school in Helensburgh. Her life since has been a whirlwind of love and laughter, plus a ton of hard work.

Charlie has launched a successful circus program for children, got married and turned 30.

But, where fairytales end, Charlie’s circus story is just beginning.

In addition to her role as director of the children’s program at Burgh Healthy Hub, Charlie has launched a new company for adult professionals, Tree Top Circus. The company made its debut at Kiama’s KISS Arts Festival and will perform again in August during the Anywhere Theatre Festival in Wollongong.

Charlie shared her story with 2508.

So that’s where the storytelling becomes really important, because that’s the role that I will have and that’s what I can also still really bring. And I can bring in people with amazing physical skills to do all of the beautiful stuff – and hold time and space and tell a story.

Tell us about the power of storytelling.

Well, whoever is reading this story right now is reading a story. It’s ancient, it’s been there since the dawn of time. It’s just natural, you see it when kids tell a story, when adults start to get excited about something, you’ve got the ritual of being read stories when you were little and going to bed.

Adults still try to sit down and read a book in any spare time they may not even have.

I think you have to tell a story not for yourself, you have to tell a story for everybody else. A story can’t be something that’s selfish, it has to be almost bigger than who you are.

Give an example of a story you’ve told via Tree Top Circus.

The good thing about Tree Top Circus is it’s in a different outdoor space all the time, so I like it to be influenced by the physical surroundings. So when we did it in Kiama, when we launched it [at the KISS Arts Festival in April 2017], the show changed dramatically because we were next to a harbour and there was a lighthouse behind it.

I created a mermaid character who had washed up into the tree and there was a clock tower just behind us, so we created a time-keeper, and the

The boys actually covered the tree in fairy lights, so the show is typically performed at dusk, wherever the venue is. What happens is the story starts, and as night falls, the fairy lights go up on the tree, so it starts in dusk and is performed in dark.

Is there a kind of tree that you prefer for a show?

It depends on the space. We had a beautiful fig tree that we used in Kiama, and that is lovely, because it’s the height and it looks so beautiful as it twists and wraps around.

I think it’s also beautiful to use big, old eucalyptus gums, which we have got so many of.

And we’re going to use some of those as the year progresses. But when you get booked at a venue you have to utilise your surroundings, so not only is the show centred around stories, it is also centred around being adaptable.

Where can we see a performance?

I am going to launch one at the end of the year in Helensburgh. And we are going to do something similar to it at the Anywhere Theatre Festival – however, there were no trees big enough for our performance [in Wollongong] but we will utilise the characters and wrap the rig in fairy lights. And there is talk about being involved in Floriade [Canberra’s spring festival] as well.

There are always opportunities for the kids to open the acts and support us, but I’m going to keep it for professional adult work. I want it to be an example of what circus can grow into. It’s an inspiring thing. n Visit www.treetopcircus.com.

Local bush tucker To mark NAIDOC Week, Narelle Happ looks at four wild foods found in the Illawarra.

From July 2 to 9, this year’s NAIDOC Week celebrates language and the many languages of the Aboriginal people.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for everyone to become involved in an activity to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

The Dharawal or Tharawal people are a group or clan of Aboriginal people from along the coastal area from the south of Sydney Harbour, through Georges River, Botany Bay, Port Hacking, throughout the Illawarra Escarpment, and across areas now known as the Macarthur, Southern Highlands, and Illawarra regions, as far south as the Shoalhaven River.

The diet of the Dharawal was local plants, fruits and vegetables, fish, land mammals and ‘bread’, baked with local grains or wattleseed, roasted and ground into flour.

Edible uses: Wattleseed provided Indigenous Australians with a rich source of protein and carbohydrate in times of drought. The seed was crushed into flour between flat grinding stones and cooked into cakes or damper. Even the green seeds of some species were eaten after baking in the hot coals.

Roasted ground Wattleseed has a diverse number of uses in the kitchen, from baking to thickening of sauces and casseroles, to ice-cream.

By dark-roasting Wattleseed, an aroma of nutty freshly roasted coffee is released and can be used as a beverage or as an addition to chocolate or desserts.

Edible uses: During lean times in late summer, Aboriginal people would locate their camps near drifts of Pigface to guarantee a food source. The plants’ fleshy leaves can also be cooked as greens or squeezed to provide soothing juices for bites and burns.

Edible uses: The blue fruits of the Dianella were eaten raw. They have a sweet flavour, which becomes nutty once the seeds are chewed. Its leaves were used to make a strong fibre.

Arching branches with fine foliage and long yellow flowers in abundance in summer and autumn.

Edible uses: Geebung fruits ripen on the ground and are best when soft. Discard the skin and enjoy the soft pulp around the seed.

Other uses: Aboriginal people treat sore eyes by mixing fine scrapings of wood from the stem of young Persoonia falcata with breast milk.

Cini ready to celebrate 50 years of music A Helensburgh musician is preparing to celebrate five decades in the business in September.

As well as a half-century of hard work and success in a notoriously tough industry, Tony Cini has notched up a fair few other notable achievements, including the fact his band, The Arc Riders, released an album in April 2016 which debuted at No.1 on the Australian blues and roots charts. The album includes two songs relating to Helensburgh.

Tony has been promoting blues and roots music around Australia for 12 years with live shows and compilation CDs, which have charted “real well�, Tony says. The muso has also been running Blues on the Water cruises in Sydney for 24 years and he promotes live shows at Beaches Hotel, Thirroul.

Uber driver at the wheel A local bloke is spearheading Uber’s move into the Illawarra region. 2508 reports.

Helensburgh’s Rod Gruggen has become one of the first local residents to offer his driver services as a part of the global car transportation app, Uber.

Rod moved to Helensburgh in February 2015 and has started offering his driver services off the Uber app platform; he is willing to cover trips to areas in and around Sydney, the Sutherland shire, the Illawarra and more.

He said Uber was a safe and reliable alternative way of booking and using a taxi-like service because Uber vetted its drivers and all bookings were trackable.

“At the end of the trip, [via the app] the driver rates the passenger [from 1 to 5 on politeness etc] and the passenger rates the driver [on politeness, safety, cleanliness].” 2508

Hair for wigs

A young Helensburgh girl has donated a more than 20cm length of her hair to be used as part of free real-hair wigs for cancer sufferers affected by hair loss.

Alyssa, 11, donated her hair to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths, “the largest national movement and first campaign to create free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer”, according to Pantene.

Hair stylist Emma Clayton at Helensburgh’s Jemcko Studio cut Alyssa’s hair for the donation.

Alyssa’s mum Jenna said Alyssa had been growing her hair for about two years specifically for the cause and had considered several wig-making campaigns before deciding on Pantene.

Before it is donated, hair must meet strict requirements for length, colour and condition. 2508

The Helensburgh Girl Guides District Presentation Night and Support Group AGM was held at the Guide hall on Friday, May 26.

With a theme of wizardry and magic, the Guides performed sketches and presented a review of the past year for their parents and families. Each guide prepared and read a speech about a different highlight of the year’s activities, with topics ranging from camps and events they had attended, to badges earned and skills developed. The speeches and supporting slideshow highlighted just how much had been enjoyed and learned by the Guides over the past year. A huge shout-out to the fantastic leaders and helpers for making all this possible.

An awards ceremony was then held to present Guides with the badges they had earned.

Congratulations to all Guides receiving badges on the night.

The evening concluded with the Support Group AGM, followed by supper.

How to prevent a knee injury Helensburgh Physiotherapy’s Aaron Babb reports.

Patients in our sports-mad region often ask us about how to prevent knee injuries, whether acute (knee ligament sprains) or chronic (knee tendonitis, bursitis, or the management of arthritis).

There are key points that should be addressed.

First, a flexibility component should be incorporated into an exercise program. Second, a strength program will typically work to prevent injury. Third, proprioceptive control.

Proprioception is your body’s awareness of itself in space, it’s an integral part of balance and coordinated movement.

Note: the following recommendations are designed for knee injury-prevention, not performance enhancement.

FLEXIBILITY In any injury-prevention program, flexibility or a stretching program of the surrounding muscles is crucial. The muscles most important for prevention of knee injuries are hip and thigh muscles: gluteals, hip adductors or groin muscles, and knee flexors and extensors. There are countless stretching programs, but the basic guidelines of warming up prior to exercise still ring true: warm up until you “break a sweat”, stretch each muscle group two to three times, and stretch after activity for your cool down. Stretching will assist to prevent injury and is an absolute must if you have sustained an injury.

STRENGTHENING As with any injury-prevention program, strengthening of the muscles surrounding the knee is important. Focus on the hip muscles: gluteus maximus or hip extensors; rectus femoris and iliopsoas or hip flexors; and hip adductors. Also important are the knee joint, knee extensors (quadriceps group) and knee flexors (hamstring

group). Many sources also recommend strength exercises for lower-leg muscles, such as ankle plantarflexors and dorsiflexors.

To strengthen these areas, use weight machines or some other form of resistance exercise, such as Therabands, which your physiotherapist can supply. Each exercise should focus on individual muscle groups and be performed in eight to 10 repetitions. Complete at least one set, increasing up to three sets, with at least 20 to 40 seconds of rest between each set. Focus on proper form.

Another strength-training option are bodyweight exercises, such as squats or lunges. I prefer this form of strength training simply because the muscles are being used often in the exact same functional way they will be on the court, field etc.

PROPRIOCEPTIVE TRAINING One of my favourites is Pilates, which focuses on controlled movement. Proprioception is the ideal utilisation of flexibility and strength in a controlled manner. Another simpler option is balance work; try performing simple exercises with your eyes open and, as you get better, close your eyes. Your brain will have to quickly respond to all feedback it is getting about your body’s positioning in space.

AVOID OVERTRAINING, REGARDLESS OF ACTIVITY CHOICE The first step in avoiding knee overtraining is to choose your activity wisely to ensure it’s a good fit, for example, if you have many lower-leg problems, knee pain, or a history of back pain, a non-weightbearing activity, such as swimming, may be a better choice than running. Start slowly, with a day of rest between each exercise bout, and progress either by increasing the time of each exercise session or by adding a day of activity per week. For people who like variety, choosing different activities is a good option. Choose a weight-bearing and a nonweight-bearing activity and alternate workouts.

Regardless of the activity, use proper technique, particularly in technique-intense sports, such as CrossFit, which has become hugely popular. 2508

The community of 2508 has proved again just how generous it is by raising more than $15,000 for The Salvation Army through its Red Shield Appeal May fundraiser. Lauren Martin reports.

Northern Illawarra Red Shield Appeal Director, Ian Archer said he was “blown away” with how the community rallied around the cause.

“We had groups of people wanting to get on board with this great cause, from HORCC (Helensburgh Off Road Cycle Club), to local gym Fitter, Faster, Stronger, Centennial Hotel and Helensburgh Primary School. 2508 is a true community of hope.”

One of the highlights of the appeal was the Salvos Stores Op-shop for a Cause shopping and dessert evening. 2508 Salvos is excited to announce that this will become a regular event with different themes such as Home Styling, Up-Cycling Furniture and Spring Fashions.

The Helensburgh Public School ‘Red Day’ fundraiser and cupcake stall raised an impressive $708.55, with Year 2 student Clio Ryan contributing $20.25 of her own money that she raised by making and selling jewellery at a market stall.

“What I love about living in 2508,” Ian said, “is that it is made up of so many people with beautiful, generous hearts, like Clio. On behalf of The Salvation Army, I thank 2508!” 2508

Grab a bag!

Boomerang Bags Coal Coast was officially launched at a film night in June. The community group’s co-leader, Wendy Gergos, reports.

War on Waste – everyone is talking about it. The three-part series, which aired on the ABC last month, tackled topics such as food waste, plastic, coffee cups and fast fashion. It exposed shocking statistics, including the fact that Australia’s waste is growing at double the rate of our population, with 52 mega tonnes generated a year.

For our small group of local volunteers, the timing of the documentary couldn’t have been better. Community support for Boomerang Bags has been overwhelming and we aim to have our first 600 bags in stores by the end of July.

Our group turns pre-loved fabric into sustainable alternatives to single use-plastic bags.

The bags we sew are free to borrow from local businesses. Return the bags the next time you visit a shop, or keep and reuse. They are a sustainable – and stylish! – alternative to grey plastic. Our aim is to circulate the bags, start conversations and inspire people to make conscious choices.

A community initiative, Boomerang Bags Coal Coast, was launched on Sunday, June 18 at a screening of A Plastic Ocean in Stanwell Park’s CWA Hall, where we gave away eco bags.

So far, corporate support has come from Symbio Wildlife Park, Hillen Staff Solutions and Belle Property Thirroul. The funding has enabled us to buy “Boomerang Bags Coal Coast” labels and displays for stores.

CWA has a winner Publicity Officer Heather Smith reports.

Wendy Gergos from Flame Fish Design is the winner of our Festival of Flight logo competition, taking her from the drawing board to the skies.

The Otford local wins a free hang gliding flight, courtesy of Chris Boyce from Sydney Hang Gliding Centre.

Wendy said her design reflected flight in all its forms while paying tribute to the Father of Flight, Lawrence Hargrave. “He really is the man around here,” she said.

Wendy has awarded Hargrave his pilot’s wings in the design and portrays the fun of flying, even for those on the ground. The logo will feature in the CWA’s promotional material for the event, to be held this year on November 12, the date on which Lawrence Hargrave lifted himself 16 feet off the ground under the power of box kites.

In other CWA news, designs for the renovation of the Hall have been finalised but we are having trouble getting builders to quote. The only quote we have received so far prices the upgrade to the toilets (including disabled access), replacing the lining of the walls and reinstating the front portico at more than $40,000.

Meet the playwrights Cameron Campbell, communications officer at Stanwell Park Arts Theatre (SPAT), chats to Tom Peach and Bernadette Le Mesurier (pictured right).

Tom and Bernadette are the local playwrights and directors of SPAT’s new show, Not that far from Sydney, which will be performed at Kings Cross and the Stanwell Park CWA Hall in July.

Tell us about yourself and how long you’ve been part of SPAT? Bernadette: I did some professional acting in my teenage years. In 2008, I performed in SPAT’s Christmas pantomime and have been involved in most of SPAT’s shows since. In 2011, I wrote and directed my first play for SPAT. This will be my fifth time directing and the fifth time one of my plays has been performed.

Tom: I’ve always loved the theatre, and I’ve also written for a hobby. Around five years ago I started writing for the stage – since then I’ve had several plays performed both in Stanwell Park and Kings Cross and I studied at the Open Studio course at NIDA. My last role was as the Dame in the panto that Bernadette wrote.

Why is your next show called ‘Not that far from Sydney’?

Bernadette: Last year, we decided to collaborate on a themed show. Tom’s connections with the Sydney theatre scene gave us the opportunity to perform in Stanwell Park and Kings Cross. The two suburbs are connected by train but are very different culturally, and we decided that that would be our theme. Both places are “Not that far from Sydney”.

Where are you performing the show?

At the Blood Moon Theatre in The World Bar in Kings Cross on July 13, 14, 15 and at the Stanwell Park CWA hall on July 22, 28 and 29.

SUP surfers do well in comp A team of local stand-up paddling surfers impressed at the 2017 Ocean and Earth Southern Cross SUP Festival.

More than 120 of NSW’s top SUP riders competed in the event, which also acted as the NSW State Titles. It was held at Mollymook on April 28, 29 and 30.

The Surefire team – Steve Rainford (Helensburgh), Crazy Harry (Stanwell Park), Blair Moore (Woonoona) and Surefire Boards’ shaper Mick Slattery – headed down for the comp.

“The quality of surfing improves in leaps and bounds every year and the boards are getting smaller to allow more aggressive surfing,” Mick told 2508 District News.

“Everyone had some super-hard heats, stacked with talent and I’m stoked with how everyone performed.

“I managed a fifth place and Blair got sixth.

“We learnt a lot from this competition and are now focused on some heat strategies and linking more moves per wave.

“We also used the state titles to unveil our latest “Elite” SUP construction, which is super lightweight and performance-orientated.

“Teaming up with local artist Matt Gillette to do some crazy artwork on the boards makes them stand out even more.

“To me, SUP surfing needs a bit of attitude, and I have always loved the 80s and early 90s skate art.

Helensburgh mother of three, Krysty Davies, ran 95km and tackled 270 obstacles over a 24-hour period to become women’s champ of the militaryinspired obstacle challenge race, True Grit.

Krysty completed nine laps of an extremely tough course as part of the endurance event staged at Dargle Farm on June 10 and 11.

“Starting the 6th lap and seeing ‘Position 1’ on

the board was a bit of a shock,” Krysty said.

“So much so that I stopped to question the time-keeper!”

Krysty now plans to head to Las Vegas in the USA in November to compete in Word’s Toughest Mudder, a world title 24-hour obstacle endurance event.

Junior Tigers report Helensburgh JRLFC is having a great 2017 season, club president Greg Gaffney reports.

With the new League Start for U6 and U7, six players a side on a smaller field, the young “tiggers” are learning the game of rugby league.

Our 8s and 9s are on the mini fields and it’s great to see our new mini field in action.

(Thanks to Micheal Brooks for supplying our new posts and the hard work from many to get the field up and running, especially Al “the Surveyor” Manning.) These fields were a great success during the annual Spud Coman U8s Knockout. Again a huge effort from the club to cater for 24 teams, 8-10 kids per team, parents and supporters. The U8 team coaches, managers, parents and helpers should be congratulated on the work they put in on the day, as should the committee who worked from 6am until finish – about 10 hours later. Como Crocodiles won the Spud Coman Shield; Sutherland Pirates took out the Tiger Plate.

The U8s are having a great year in normal comp and are one of our improving teams.

Same with the U9s; they are still in the non-competitive ages but they are on even terms with most teams and are keen to learn.

Well done.

Our U10s have worked hard this year and have been elevated into A grade. Well done.

Our 11-2s North Burgh side have mixed well to form a leading side.

The 13-2s are right in the mix. A few injuries, not all from footy, are making their games hard but they are showing Tiger spirit.

Our 14 girls League Tag (LT) are improving all the time and, with the competition to be split soon, they will be able to play into the semis in their rightful competition.

Our 16 girls LT are going along nicely with many good wins, and the 16s boys are also right up there, which is exciting for the club.

On and off the field, the club is going great.

Our early set-ups and then the pack-ups by the last team to play have been awesome.

Our upcoming Sports Dinner – on July 28 at the Tradies – is a huge chance for all in our community to enjoy a great afternoon and evening of entertainment. MC is Sid Barnes, guest speakers include Brett Kenny, Steve Edge and Eric Grothe, and the headline act is live music by Eric Grothe and the Gurus. There will also be auctions, raffles and much more. Meet and greet is at 5.30pm; kick-off at 6pm.

Star Japanese trio boost Thistles The Thistles’ playing stocks have been boosted with the recruitment of three first grade players, club officials report.

The trio – Junya Okamoto, Kei Mitani and Naruyuki Kato – made an immediate impression on debut and have added much-needed experience to a young First Grade squad.

“These guys have real skill and pace and I am sure they will become crowd favourites with Helensburgh supporters,” head coach Brad Boardman said. “I am also pleased that rugged defender Gareth Brownlee has shelved retirement plans to rejoin the Club for the 2017 season 2017.”

Tradies social golf

There was a buzz around the clubroom as members tried on their new uniform jackets; some should have ordered XXL to allow for the inevitable winter spread.

It’s a good time to recognise Tradies Helensburgh for their support of our golf club and the local community. With our new uniforms complete and the use of the club facilities to hold our meetings and BBQ lunch after the game, it makes the day more than just a game of golf. Well done, Tradies.

It was Roger’s day to shine with a healthy 43 Stableford points and a win in the match-play – Gallardo’s Pizza for dinner this week. Well done. Tung followed up with 38 points and 36 for myself – both of us off to Helensburgh Butchers for our weekly supply.

Steve McRae Golf super pin prize is still proving a challenge; with the dozen golf balls jackpotting each month, we may have to import some of the Fescue grass from the US Open to improve our aim.

Jammu and Bill claimed the prize for the best front and back 9 holes with Mark heading to Helensburgh Driving Range to improve his game. Match-play winners were Roger, Tung, Gary and Mark.

Next game, another individual Stableford, is at 7am on July 15. Arrive early so Mick can prepare the cards.

I was wounded and unable to play last month but Robert ‘Indy’ Jones let me know what happened.

Tony ‘Prez’ was absent due to grandparents’ duties and his birthday. Happy Birthday! Johnny Brunton recorded a big 34 points, winning the Helensburgh Bowl – he rewarded himself with food. Pete Gardner ran second and rewarded himself with booze. Tim Lowe was third and I think he kicked himself as he came in third on a count-back.

Matchplay was interesting: Frank Z and Scotty Gersbach had a two-hole play-off but Scotty jagged it.

I heard they were trying to get out of BBQ duties. Pete Gardner gave Mick Bowran a run for his money (Pete smashed him); Jammu v Chucky O’Connor (Mark won!); Kevy ‘Cyclone’ vs Pete ‘Dancer and Singer’ (Kevy’s on a roll). Well done, guys!

In memory The community gathered in Helensburgh to farewell ‘two of our own’ last month.

Our small community was united in grief after the loss of two young men in June.

Reuben Martin, 18, and Lachlan Scipione, 25, died following a car accident, when the Nissan Skyline they were in crashed into a parked tipper truck on Walker Street about 2am on Sunday, June 18.

Hundreds of people gathered before Thistles club matches at Helensburgh’s Rex Jackson Park on Saturday, June 24 to farewell “two of our own”.

At 11am, Helensburgh Thistles FC players, supporters and community members formed a memorial guard of honour as players took to the field. Before the 1st Grade game at 3pm, players and officials again gathered on the field, forming a huge circle of mourners for a minute’s silence.

Sadness swept through the tight-knit 2508 community after the crash, with flowers laid at the Walker Street site and tributes flooding social media. Helensburgh Thistles posted: “We remember both our boys for all of the best of times

that we had with them and the best of things that we saw in them.

“We will forever be the richer for having had the chance to know them and poorer for their loss.

“To all who knew Reuben and Lachlan, and in particular to their families for whom this is the cruellest loss imaginable, we seek as a community to wrap ourselves around you with our love and our compassion and hope that in some way we can ease your burden by sharing the load.” 2508
