It’s the best possible place to learn. Everyone knows each other and we care for everyone and everything. Just one of the things that we care about are the beautiful whales. Twice a year these majestic creatures travel straight in front of Coledale. Many people love to watch them from our whale watching platform. When we spot the whales we put up flags so the community knows they’re here. Our school song goes, “We will learn to live

maker’s market The Wild Rumpus Market celebrating local artisans is back – on Sunday, June 21, at Anita’s Theatre, Thirroul, from 12-4pm. Wild Rumpus is a skills-sharing social enterprise founded by Northern Illawarra mums Caitlin Marshall and Lizzie Rose. Maker’s Markets are held in winter and summer. “We continue to be totally blown away by the quality and growing community of makers and artisans in the Illawarra,” Caitlin said. “Each market we get so many applications and from many new artists – it’s very inspiring. “There is so much diversity with some of our new stallholders – such as Little Loom, a Helensburgh-based weaver who makes stunning wall hangings and woven jewellery, or Silver Saloon Ceramics based in Austinmer. “It’s so fantastic to have new emerging makers with stalls next to high-profile artisans such as Fictional Objects (Stanwell Park) and

2515 REPORT

BARRY strachan Thirroul needs a skatepark and a determined bunch of locals have been working hard to achieve this. 2515 reports

Barry Strachan, president of the Northern Illawarra Skateboarders Alliance (NISA), is an easy-going bloke, but this affability belies his tenacious character. NISA has been pushing for the development of a skatepark in the area for many years, so dogged determination comes as second nature to its president. When 2515 meets Barry and other NISA supporters on the beachfront at Thirroul for our cover-shoot, the sky is dark with storm clouds, but the smiles and laughter of the gathered crew keep the terrible weather at bay. 2515 had a chat to Barry. Please tell our readers about yourself. I was born in Bulli hospital in 1970 to surfer parents whose grandparents came to the area early that century. I grew up on the lower banks of Slacky Creek

2515

2515-JUNE-p08-9_COVER FEATURE.indd 8

… I remember riding a borrowed skateboard, owned by Grant Holmes, on the driveway and the footpath out the front at a BBQ at Uncle Dezzy and Aunty Norma’s house in Woonona before I got my own for Christmas 1978; a yellow, plastic banana single kick with red urethane wheels. I have not, not owned and consistently ridden a skateboard since! Why is a skatepark so important for this region? The community-wide social, health, developmental, evolutionary benefits of the provision of public skateparks is still yet to be fully understood, lest appreciated. People of all ages, sexes and walks of life are drawn together and socialise at these facilities either directly as users, or indirectly as supervisors or spectators. The allure of these facilities encourages

citizens of all ages to get active, not only through passive supervision of children but through exemplified realisation that participation is still possible with appropriate perpetration and personal protective equipment, we all can enjoy the thrill of continuing to pursue the fun that stokes the desire to live life for the rest of our lives. What’s the latest on the skatepark campaign? The campaign for public skateparks is ongoing. It is my understanding that Wollongong Council now recognises the benefits of public skateparks and would have them in every suburb, if the funding was immediately at hand. There are two areas of urgency in importance for skateparks in the Illawarra: one is the absence of a major international-standard “showcase of innovation” skatepark within the city precinct, capable of [hosting] world-class events, possibly joining with the Bowl-a-Rama circuit to offer a triple crown of Skateboarding and Australian Bowl Riding Championships events. As well as a next-level facility within the stretch between the Guest Park Skatepark [at Fairy Meadow] and the Helensburgh skatepark that not only bridges the geographical void between the two existing facilities, but also the lack of intermediate to advanced terrain provided at the region’s existing skateparks.

2515

2515-JUNE-p08-9_COVER FEATURE.indd 9

NISA is campaigning hard for Thirroul to be the venue. To allow our young local enthusiasts to fully realise their potential as champions, the importance of provision of appropriate terrain cannot be understated. To continue to follow the beginner-to-intermediate model that has been employed thus far will continue to ultimately compromise opportunity for the mass of boiling talent that is our local youth. If we as a community can embrace this local potential and throw encouragement and support their way our special part of this will surely shine brighter as a beacon of positivity in this world and a model fit for emulation worldwide. What other events are planned this year? After the ultimate success of the “Pop-up” event at the Thirroul beach reserve there has been interest from management at Ryan’s Hotel to have the ramp in the beer garden with bands and such, which would be great. We’d also like to do another movie night at the Thirroul Neighbourhood Centre as that was popular. We are also open to suggestion and invitation regarding possible future events. A backyard series on the local half pipes would be great. Or a surf/skate cross-over event would be awesome. 2515 Like Thirroul needs a skatepark.

Tell us a little bit about Astronomy Class. What can people expect at your live shows? We’re a hip-hop trio and we’re working with a Cambodian singer called Srey Channthy. We play a mix of stuff from all our records [during live shows]. We’ve been around since 2006, a few different influences: reggae, a bit of soul and R&B and, on this latest one [Mekong Delta Sunrise], Cambodian rock ’n’ roll from the 60s and 70s. What are your gigs like? A bit of everything; our live shows, we tend to keep pretty upbeat and dance-floor stuff. The album has a few different moods on it and … we pick the more up-tempo tracks to do live. It’ll be pretty different. There have been some bigger hip-shop shows in Wollongong recently but we’re definitely a bit away from the pack with this record. Channthy is an amazing performer, with an incredible voice and we’ve had a really good response to the shows we’ve done with her.

ASTRONOMY CLASS Lovers of great music have known of local hip-hop trio Astronomy Class for years but now the secret is out and the world is listening … Astronomy Class – Chasm (Chris HamerSmith), Sir Robbo (Shane Roberts), Srey Channthy, and Ozi Batla (Shannon Kennedy) – are set to play at Anita’s Thirroul with Joelistics and another 2515 local, Al Young, on June 6. 2515 had a chat with Shannon about the band, and upcoming gigs.

2515

2515-JUNE-p012-13_BAND.indd 12

After the quiet process of song-writing there must be a real thrill when you do a live show? Yeah, definitely; you spend so much time writing an album, often with not a lot of feedback. There’s always that question mark about how people are going to receive it. Getting out and playing it live, it’s a real immediate thing. It’s always nice to see people enjoying it when you’ve been locked away writing it for so long. Through writing and rehearsing, and even from gig to gig, does a song take on a life of its own? Yeah, we’ve got a track [Four Barang in a Tuk-Tuk] that’s being played on Triple J from this latest record and we didn’t expect that we’d get any play for any of it. People keep requesting it, and it keeps getting played. You never know how people are going to respond – and we’re pleasantly surprised sometimes. ■ Joelistics and Astronomy Class will play at Anita’s, Thirroul, on Saturday, June 6. Special guests include Srey Channthy (The Cambodian Space Project) and Vida Sunshyne. 2515

2515 NATURE Seed Sprout Yoga’s Nadia Szimhart leads a little class.

yoga for kids

By Nicky Way

Kids generally have a limited attention span, so I was worried that attempting a family yoga class with Master Five could be disastrous. According to Nadia Szimhart, of Seed Sprout Yoga at Thirroul, there is no need to worry. “Family yoga is about inviting the little people in your life, children as young as three, to come and play with their grown-ups and they [the kids] don’t have to do everything, they’re invited to participate. “It’s a fun practice,” Nadia says. And what great fun it is. One minute mums, dads and kids are rockets, the next we’re supermen and, seconds later, we’re slippery snakes sliding along the ground. Then there’s my favourite: the partner poses. In poses that are safe for adults and hilarious to the kids, we row, row, row our boat until we are almost sailing off into the Pacific. Kids gently stand on the adults’ thighs, opening out tight hips – and there’s lots of laughter. Erika Steller, of Light Being Yoga, teaches yoga for five- to 10-year-olds at Austinmer and she agrees yoga for kids needs to be engaging for the age group and mostly fun.

2515

2515-JUNE-p016-17_YOGA.indd 16

According to Yoga Australia, yoga can strengthen and invigorate the body, help physical systems to work properly and, when practised with awareness and a focus on the breath, yoga can lead to better mindfulness and a more relaxed state of mind. Nadia says family yoga is also a great opportunity for parents to model healthy habits for their children. “Rather than telling your child [how to do something] you’re modelling it; the breathing, relaxation, meditation and concentration.” For Erika, yoga for children is about giving them a space where they are encouraged to be themselves. “Children’s yoga is practised without judgement and without needing to be a certain way. Children learn to respect and appreciate difference and individuality.” But, with so many little people personalities in a room, how do you keep children engaged? Nadia says: “Often I get my cues from the children, from what they’re interested in and I try to incorporate it into the class.” Erika takes on a similar philosophy in her kids’ yoga classes. “If our theme for the day is going into space and someone wants to show us their wobbling green alien pose, we will often do that.” During these yoga classes, the kids tickle, touch, stretch, sigh and play with a joyousness, curiosity and no inhibitions. That, I think, is exactly what family and/ or kids’ yoga is and I think Master Five agrees because he wants to go again. Seed Sprout Yoga, Nadia Szimhart, Thirroul Community Centre, 0431 592 573. 2515 OUTDOORS

Gardening with sara Planning a coastal garden? Sara Newnham recommends native plants. The plants you choose must be tough as they cop a beating from many environmental factors, such as salt winds and drought, all while enjoying a fabulous view. The soil in most seaside gardens is quite poor due to the high sand element. Help your garden by adding organic matter to the soil. Compost and manure are a good idea when planting exotics, but go easy on these when planting natives. Mulch is always beneficial as it will break down over time to enrich the soil. It helps to retain moisture and the biggest benefit is it suppresses weeds. Always plant the right thing in the right spot as this will help the plant (it will thrive!) and also the visual appeal (it won’t look half dead!) and lessen your maintenance (you won’t have to prune it all the time if you choose a plant that grows to your required height – don’t plant a 5m shrub if you require a 1m hedge). When I think of coastal plants that thrive in extremes, I think of the natives. Our beautiful coastline is filled with plants that will look good in suburban gardens, such as coastal Banksia integrifolia, white-flowering tea tree Leptospermum laevigatum, low-growing climber Hibbertia volubilis; clumping wind-swept grasses Lomandra and coastal spear-grass, both found all over Bald Hill. Yellow-flowering snake vine is great as a ground cover. When choosing frontline coastal plants you can’t go wrong with grey foliage beauties. Common lavenders, Convolvulus cneorum, and white-flowering morning glory Westringia are all hardy small shrubs. Snow-in-summer, Cerastium tomentosum, is a grey, soft foliage groundcover. Groundcover plants are great for creating a living mulch; they suppress weeds, look good trailing over walls or embankments and can help with erosion. Top native ground-

covers are the green Myoporum parvifolium and pig face Carpobrotus rossii. Edible plants suitable would be common rosemary, bay tree and sensational Feijoa, a fruiting shrub from New Zealand that is commonly called pineapple guava. It tastes and smells like strawberry, lemon and passion fruit all in one – it flowers and is used as a wind break or hedge. For a traditional beachside garden, plant a frangipani tree, climbing mandevillas, with mass-flowering, bright, tubular flowers or a hibiscus. My favorite is native Hibiscus tiliaceus. Hibiscus Tiliaceus Rubra has the most stunning burgundy, heart-shaped leaves and yellow flowers; it makes a lovely small feature tree. Succulents do very well by the sea – a carpet of senecio reminds me of seaweed. Agaves make a bold statement and some cultures believe Jade brings good luck. These plants have made a big fashionable comeback in the garden design industry, so get a little trendy and plant one today. Happy gardening! 2515

Lizzie Buckmaster Dove’s Moon Cycle, made of marine debris

close to home The works of 21 local artists will be showcased in the Clifton School of Arts’ winter exhibition, Close to Home.

The walks drive your creative process? Yeah, absolutely. The walking is kind of a meditative part of my practice and the fact that it is actually handing me material physical material – to work with is this double act.

Lizzie Buckmaster Dove

The exhibition will be from June 5 to 14. Curators Ruth Harvey and Vyvian Wilson have invited the artists to explore their connection with the Illawarra through paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and print-making. Coledale artist Lizzie Buckmaster Dove “encases plastic beach rubbish in round tins to highlight the moon’s tidal cycles to contrast this unnatural problem caused by the plastic washed up with each tide”, the curators said. 2515 chatted with Lizzie about her influences and inspiration. Are the materials you use actually collected from your beach walks? That’s right, so there are two works that are in the show: there’s one that is a series of four round tins with those objects and each of those tins marks a quarter-cycle [of the moon] and then the other work is made from paint swatch

2515

2515-JUNE-p020-21_ART, SHARK.indd 20

cards which illustrate one full moon cycle; it was kind of the parameters that I worked within to make a whole body of work.

Is inspiration an unconscious thing or do you have to be disciplined and work at it? I think it’s both those things. I’m kind of endlessly inspired; sometimes I’m asking my head to stop coming up with ideas. I have enough fodder for 10 years’ of bodies of work and I’m incredibly disciplined, so I certainly don’t wait for my muse to turn up.

What can people expect at this exhibition? The exhibition Close to Home is a real opportunity for people to connect with their artistic community … [and for artists] to engage directly with people in the community. ■ Close to Home will include other artists such as Alannah Dreise, Alena Kennedy, Annie Bourke, Claire Freer, Gary Christian, Karen Hook, Lesley Goldacre, Liz Jeneid, Michael Keighery, Moira Kirkwood, Pauline Denney, Richard Claremont, Vyvian Wilson, Ruth Harvey and Victoria Monk. Artist and Visual Arts Associate Professor at Wollongong University, Derek Kreckler, will open Close to Home at 6.30pm on Friday, June 5. Opening hours at the Clifton School of Arts during the exhibition will be 11am-4pm. 2515

shark in a bucket By Lynne TUCK In the last issue we introduced you to “Porty” the Crested Port Jackson Shark, the shark pup found floating in a damaged egg off Sharkeys Beach and now living in a bucket in our laundry. Porty is now known as “Portia” as it is a little female. Male sharks have two “claspers” behind their anal fins. Male sharks (of the same species) are smaller than females so they can bite and hold onto the female’s pectoral (side) fins while mating. Crested Port Jackson Sharks are smaller and not as common as Port Jacksons, they have a high bony ridge over their eyes and different markings. They have crusher plates for teeth and eat shellfish and molluscs. They usually like to hide under ledges during the day and are more active at night. We hope by the next article Portia will be back in the ocean! 2515

Above, a porty’s jaw. Says Lynne: “Check out their weird teeth! These are crusher plates for eating things like lobsters, crabs and animals with hard shells.” Below, the egg and shark inside.

RAm’s horn shells

These delicate little shells would have to be my favourite “treasure” found on our seashores. Surprisingly they are not a snail or worm, but are the internal buoyancy organ of a small deep-sea squid that lives in water up to 2000 metres deep! At night they rise up to depths of 100 to 300 metres. This squid is thought to be tropical, the shells are washed ashore over wide areas, carried long distances by ocean currents because they are so buoyant. The shell protrudes from the squid’s mantle (pointy end of the body) and helps to regulate its buoyancy. The shells are often washed ashore with a fringe of goose barnacles around the edge. They are about the size of a 10 cent piece. 2515

WORLD CUP Local bmxer, Kai Sakakibara, reports from the Supercross World Cup. I flew to the Netherlands on May 4 to compete in the second stop of the UCI Supercross World Cup. The Supercross World Cups are the pinnacle events in BMX, and are televised online all around the world. With Olympic points up for grabs, there were 154 entries for the men’s racing. The only separation in class is gender, so all men above 17 years of age race in the same class – and the same applies to the women. This was my second time in the Supercross World Cup. Racing was at Papendal in the Netherlands, the Dutch Olympic Training Centre, one of the world’s most technical tracks. There were quite a few crashes in the men’s and women’s races. The racing started with qualifiers on the Saturday, which all riders raced except the top 16 riders in the World Cup rankings. The number of riders (138) was being cut to 48 through three races, so the pressure was on. I qualified 27th for the finals on Sunday. The crazy thing about these World Cup rounds is the sheer volume of competitive talent and experience of the field. All riders are their country’s best. In my 1/8 final, I was racing against Olympic Gold medalist Maris Strombergs, 2011 World Champion Joris Daudet, and 2011 Junior World Champion Alfredo Campo. I had some strong laps, but could not make it through to the quarter-finals, missing out on qualifying by one position. I was a little disappointed with the result, but was stoked that I was well up in the mix of the best riders in the world. The thrill of racing against these all-timers still gets my heart pumping, and I will be training hard to beat them next time. 2515
