The Otford rail bridge redevelopment occurred approximately one year ago, however, the work has still not been completed.

Apart from the fact that the work has been left unfinished there are also significant problems in that it is impossible to observe oncoming cars from either side of the bridge.

It is therefore impossible to comply with the signage (a stop sign on one side and a give way sign on the opposite side) unless a motorist remains stationary at the signs indefinitely.

The Otford rail bridge was “effectively” twoway for more than 20 years without problems.

The poor redesign created an excessively wide pedestrian crossing, resulting in reducing this crossing to only one lane for motor traffic.

The above circumstance puts at risk the safety of Otford residents, particularly those on the eastern side of the railway.

During the annual Wollongong to Sydney bike ride, for example, residents only have this one lane bridge to enter and exit the suburb.

Residents are severely inconvenienced during this event, with police roadblocks preventing residents from accessing their local community.

This restricted access could also present a disastrous circumstance during a bush fire or other emergency. One can imagine residents trying to evacuate and emergency service vehicles trying to access the area over a one-lane bridge. The bridge needs to be redesigned to cater from traffic in both directions.

On the French coast: “Sometimes it is really hard for mum to carry me all the way down to the water,” Beth wrote in her journal. “I think every beach should have one of these. It wouldn’t even be that hard to do!”

Beth’s Adventure

In one of the world’s more wonderful ironies, the Stanwell Park mother and daughter who our community raised funds for are now themselves raising funds for refugees in Turkey.

Katie Cooper-Wares and her daughter Beth left Australia in July for the start of their trip to tick off Beth’s Bucket List of 101 adventures.

Beth has Osteogenesis Imperfecta III, a severe brittle bone disease. She’s just turned 12 and has broken 36 bones in her short life, including a rib four hours before the pair were due to fly out.

“I ended up in emergency instead of on the

plane! But I’m all good now!” Beth wrote in her first journal entry from Amsterdam.

Buying blankets for Syrian refugees didn’t originally feature on Beth’s Bucket List. But last month, Katie posted a Facebook update from Tlos, Turkey: “Beth has altered her bucket list slightly so we could free up a little of our own savings and spend some more time here in Turkey as we are organising some donations of goods to Syrian refugees here ... ” So Beth ticked off float in “a dead sea”, Turkish lagoon Oludeniz, rather than “the Dead Sea”.

tony cini’s debut album

Helensburgh musician and promoter Tony Cini will release his debut album this month with his band, the Arc Riders. 2508 reports.

There are two tracks on the CD which contain references to Helensburgh: Illawarra Train and Jessica, about 26-year-old Jessica Dilford, who died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident on Cemetery Road in 2009.

“One song [Jessica] is pretty sad and one is exactly the opposite. Probably the most fun track on the album is Illawarra Train.”

Tony’s been a Helensburgh resident for “going on 10 years”.

“We absolutely love this place. I’ve been very privileged to live in some good addresses but to me this [Helensburgh] is heaven.”

He’s been busy promoting blues and roots music in the Illawarra for 10 years and by the time his 11-track debut album is released this month, Tony will be 64 but he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

“I’m already thinking of the next one [album]

… the next one’s going to be an acoustic EP and then I’m thinking of a full-on album.”

He says Elvis was his “first influence”; Jimi Hendrix’s debut album, which he was given when he was 16, “just blew my mind”; and legendary Irish rock ‘n’ roller Rory Gallagher, who died in 1995, “is my biggest influence ever”.

“My biggest vocal influence is a guy called Paul Rodgers … he’s renowned as the voice of rock.

“I come from a rock background … you can’t take the rock out of this old fella.”

Some of Australia’s top musicians, including Jan Rynsaardt, Ryan Van Gennip and Jon Howell, Lachy Doley and Cameron Henderson will feature on the CD. 2508 n Tony Cini’s debut album, 23300 [the number of days between when he was born in 1951 and when the album is released, Tony says], will be released on Tony’s birthday, October 24.

MOVIE MASTER What sort of knock-on effect did your success in Helensburgh filmmaker James Lepre last year’s Big Break have? is attracting national attention It helped me gain some big clients such as with his award-winning productions.

Mogo Zoo, as it gave me an opportunity to 2508 reports.

James has been selected as a Top 10 finalist in the Supercheap Auto Big Break for the second year in a row. The comp calls for entrants to create a 30-second Supercheap Auto TV commercial. This year James’s entry – The Real Never Never Land – is a musical Peter Panthemed piece in which grown men dream of being children again at Supercheap Auto.

James had this to tell 2508.

How did you come up with the concept?

Originally we had an idea – we were going to get all the animals [at Wagon Wheels] and do a CGI thing with their mouths moving … and then somehow [my partner] Emma and I just got onto the idea of doing a musical and started writing some lyrics and came up with the Peter Pan idea, you know a place where you stay a kid forever.

show them what we [Mane Collective] are capable of when given full creative control.

They wanted a totally fresh new look and feel for their TV campaign and we ended up producing three commercials which generated a ton of positive feedback and boosted business for them and led to a lot more work for me.

That is always an incredible feeling when you know you’ve put every ounce of creative energy into a project and it’s come off a success.

That is a result I chase every job.

We’d like to be known for our creativity, our comical narratives and our overall intuitive vision throughout projects. n Voting for the 2015 Big Break closed on September 26. DR RIP Stanwell Park’s Rob Brander – aka Dr Rip – saves lives every time he talks. 2508 reports.

2508 often hears from people who love the mag. When pressed about what they like, the answer is invariably “that Dr Rip guy”.

So who is the hugely popular Dr Rip? At work, he’s coastal geomorphologist Dr Rob Brander, Associate Professor of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of NSW. He’s a great public speaker and writer who shares his knowledge with thousands every year.

At home in Stanwell Park, he’s a top bloke, a father of two young girls who’d like to spend more time body surfing. Rob kindly took time out to have a chat with 2508.

You grew up in Canada. Why did you decide to dedicate your life to studying rips?

I actually grew up near a beach in Toronto, but the water was cold and polluted with a nuclear plant on it, so swimming wasn’t an option! My love of the ocean came from family vacations to Cape Cod on the east coast of the US. At uni studying Geography, I volunteered to help out with some beach field experiments that involved a lot of diving in freezing water, but it was fun and the best way to learn. Eventually I went backpacking, first stop Sydney, where an Australian friend pointed out a rip at Bronte … and I couldn’t see it! That got me interested in rips and I ended up coming back to do my PhD on them at Sydney Uni. Now all I see is rips …

of rips. I realised I had that knowledge, but it wasn’t really helping anyone. So I started giving public talks at my surf club (Tamarama) called the Science of the Surf, which explained how waves, beaches and rips worked. I’d always release harmless purple dye into the rip to show people how fast and far they flow. The talks got increasingly popular and everyone, especially the media, loved the dye. The main feedback I’d get was ‘I’ve lived next to the beach all of my life and didn’t know any of this stuff’ and ‘This needs to be in schools’. So I started speaking to schools, surf clubs, nippers and communities.

Over the years I’ve easily spoken to more than 50,000 people and hundreds of schools in NSW and my YouTube video ‘How to survive beach rip currents’ has more than 1.3 million views, which is incredible.

You’re a well-respected academic and a global publishing sensation. What’s your secret?

I’m amazed at the media attention and global recognition I’ve had for Science of the Surf. A lot has to do with social media, but also because I’m really passionate about teaching and educating people. No-one should drown in rips. It’s totally avoidable if you don’t get in one and I think it’s my obligation to stop that from happening. I also think people relate more to one person trying to achieve something, rather than a big corporate organisation. The ‘Dr Rip’ nickname, courtesy of the Bondi Lifeguards, has also helped, but ultimately I reckon it’s the purple dye. Everyone remembers seeing the dye on TV or in person!

Where are the world’s most dangerous rips?

I get asked this all the time and my answer is always the same: every rip is dangerous. Most rip drownings occur on beautiful days with small waves, not stormy days with raging rips.

DR RIP’S TOP 5 RIP TIPS 1. Don’t Panic. Easier said than done, but it’s panic that drowns people, not rips.

2. Don’t swim back to the beach against the rip, it’ll tire you out.

3. Relax and go with the flow. Rips often carry you onto shallow sandbanks; 4. Float on your back and signal for help if you need it. If there’s no lifeguards, surfers can help; 5. Swim towards areas of whitewater and breaking waves. You’ll probably be able to stand and waves help you back to the beach.

How can a person avoid being caught in a rip?

You need to learn how to spot rips.

Talking to lifeguards helps, as does looking at my ‘Rip of the Month’ feature on my scienceofthesurf.com website. There’s seven years of rip pictures there! You don’t cross the road without looking both ways and you shouldn’t go to a surf beach without thinking about rips and how to avoid them.

What’s it like being caught in a rip?

I jump in rips all the time for research, but also for getting a free ride out the back to bodysurf. Surfers use rips all the time. I don’t think I’ve ever been caught, because I know what’s going on and only use rips if conditions are within my limits. What do they feel like?

Nothing. It’s like floating in a river. You don’t actually feel anything because you’re going with the flow. Dr Rip’s Science of the Surf Beach bars, bumps and holes can catch the unwary, writes Rob Brander.

The other day at the beach, I decided I had to go swimming. Unfortunately I didn’t have boardies on, but decided my Bonds apparel would pass as budgie smugglers.

But you can never be sure. So I sprinted* into the water and immediately fell down. I should have known better. Just seaward of the shoreline was a pronounced beach step, one of several morphologic features characteristic of every beach. Beaches have a surprising amount of bars, bumps and holes that may be the friend or foe of surfers, bathers, beach walkers or fishers alike.

Beach steps are formed by a vortex created when the backwash rushing down the beach from a broken wave meets the next incoming wave at the shorebreak. The resulting turbulence scours out a “step” that migrates up and down the beach with the tide. The coarser the sand, the bigger the step. Most are just tens

of centimetres in height, but can be greater than a metre on gravel beaches. In this case, falling over the step can have dire consequences, particularly for little children who can quickly be out of their depth.

Then there’s berms. Every wave carries sand and water with it when it rushes up the beach.

On a rising tide, the water soaks into the dry beach and deposits the sand. This builds a distinct ridge running along the beach at the high-tide mark called a berm. If the waves are really small, the berm can mysteriously morph into semi-circular half moon shaped beach cusps that undulate at amazingly regular intervals along the beach. Alternatively, if a rip current sits in the same channel for a long time, it can start eroding a deep erosional embayment into the beach called a mega cusp. If we get really big storm waves, or just large waves after a long quiet spell, the berms and cusps can be carved out leaving a vertical erosional scarp, like a mini-cliff running along the beach.

Storm waves take sand from the beach berm and dump it offshore into sandbars (i.e. banks).

Most of the bars have deeper gaps between them (aka holes, gutters, troughs, channels) that are occupied by alongshore flowing currents or offshore flowing rips. Bars constantly adjust their position in response to changing wave directions, wave heights and periods, the behaviour of rips and the changing tide cycles.

But one thing they all have in common is that they migrate back towards the beach with smaller waves after the storms. How long it takes is anyone’s guess because it all depends on the waves, which depend on the weather, which as we know is totally screwed up! *in my own mind. Sara Newnham finds a hidden treasure in Kenthurst.

Spring is in the air – you can not only feel it, you can smell it! Follow your nose and fill the garden with native beauties this month.

For garden design inspiration I like to visit the spring open gardens around Sydney.

Bowral held its Tulip Time Festival in September, the Leura Garden Festival is on this month from October 3-11 in the Blue Mountains, home to many amazing open gardens. All the botanic gardens are worth checking out and are especially stunning in this peak flower season.

A few weeks ago I stumbled across a hidden treasure in Kenthurst. The Boongala Native Gardens and Rainforest (boongalagardens.com) is a 4.5-hectare property, former farmland that has been transformed to showcase native plants of all shape and sizes.

As soon as I got out of the car, I was nose-led down flower-filled pathways of Philotheca (aka Eriostemon) and Prostanthera (native mint bush). They are some of my favourites in the garden as their foliage smells good all year round. They are dense shrubs that fill 1m, do well throughout our district and don’t mind dappled shade to full sun.

A glossy canopy of native frangipani, Hymenosporum flavum, gave a fragrant backdrop of yellow and cream. I was also delighted to find a few plants I’d never seen before.

Backhousia anisata is a large, glossy tree with pungent aniseed leaves and interesting Backhousia angustifolia is a smaller bush with curry-scented leaves. Both very different to Backhousia citriodora, which I love to plant as a hardy screen; it has citrus-smelling foliage and masses of yellow flowers.

The heaviest scent in the native garden this time of year come from mass-flowering Sydney rock orchids, Dendrobium speciosum, and the dainty Dendrobium kingianum. Both are epiphytic orchids that love to grow clinging to rocks, filling hollow logs, put on walls or tied to trees. They are easy to grow, require little water, enjoy liquid fertiliser (such as Seasol) throughout the growing season and an all-purpose organic pellet safe for natives or orchid food every six months. They do best in dappled light, protected from harsh sun.

Snails and slugs love the flowers as much as I do, so start scattering animal-safe snail pellets around them from winter to summer.

Lions fair is back!

Trixie and Friends wowed the crowd last year.

Charles Harper Park and Walker Street will be filled with vibrant market stalls selling all manner of temptations on Saturday, October 24 at our annual Country Fair.

The park will also host a bonanza of carnival rides for all ages, thanks to dependable local company, Coleman’s. Of course, everyone’s favourite bungy ride will also be there, as well as the elusive $50 ladder snatch!

Food favourites are also back – the great Lions barbecue, tapas, gozleme and yummy doughnuts, fresh strawberries, snowcones and ice-creams.

Cooking with Rob try this recipe for perfect roast chicken, writes local chef Rob Lisk.

Use a nice plump chicken, free range if possible. Place the chicken on its back, drizzle with olive oil and rub evenly. Use a decent amount of salt and pepper and season the skin.

Grab a small bunch of rosemary, five to six cloves of garlic, one lemon (cut into quarters) and one onion (cut into quarters).

Mix ingredients, gently squeezing them so they release some juice, then stuff them inside the chicken.

Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200°C for about 10 mins, then drop to 175°C for an hour,

depending on chook size. While cooking, regularly baste the chook with the juices as the flavour is released from the stuffed ingredients.

Check if your chook is cooked by inserting a small sharp knife through the thigh; the juice released should be clear, not pink.

california dreaming Maeve Turner works part-time at Helensburgh’s Grima Brothers, babysits and has a new Go Fund Me web page. It’s all helping the 15-year-old achieve her goal: to attend the International Pre-Collegiate Program at the University of California, Berkeley.

Why do you want to go to UC Berkeley’s summer school next year?

I believe it is an amazing opportunity to broaden my academic horizons. Nowadays there is so much pressure choosing high school subjects, universities, TAFEs and I think this is an essential stepping stone for me, to hopefully make my career path clearer. It will also be an amazing experience, being independent on the other side of the globe, completing universitylevel studies and a chance to make lifelong friends and international connections.

Do you know anyone else who’s done it?

Organisers have told me they have only had a few Australians participate in previous years.

I will be the first student from Bulli High.

What will you study there?

It’s really difficult to choose just two subjects!

I have narrowed it down to History, Sociology, Film and Media, and International and Area Studies for the 8-week course and for the 6-week course, Anthropology, Astronomy or Psychology.

Tell us about your academic achievements.

At Bulli High, I have been in all of the top classes since Year 8 and regularly place in the top 10. This year, I’ve achieved outstanding results in English, History, Geography and Photography. I average an A Grade in my assignments and tests.

Do you know what you’d like to do when grown up?

Not really. At the moment I’m inclining towards something along the lines of wildlife conservation or humanitarian work. I am really passionate about animal and human rights.

After high school I have plans to go and volunteer in a Third World country to teach children English and also volunteer in communities to help protect the wildlife.

How much do you need to raise?

The course at most will cost $12,300. I’ll then need to pay for my visa fee, health insurance, accommodation before and after the program, and flights … I have already saved $3000 from working and babysitting.

How are Grima Bros helping?

They always ask how my savings are going and crack me up with their fundraising ideas.

Pete wanted a rap in this article about how he is such a legend and is the best boss, which I can vouch for. The Grima family are wonderful people and I wouldn’t want to spend my Sunday mornings anywhere else. Manny has offered to supply the strawberries I will be selling at the Helensburgh Country Fair.

How else do you plan to raise money?

I will have a stall at the Helensburgh Fair with novelty games, competitions and strawberries. We will also be running a fundraising dinner at Raya Thai. I’ve been a regular customer at Raya Thai since I was three and I was thrilled when Dede suggested holding a fundraising event for me.

A touching story of a family unlike any other sent the internet into meltdown last month.

Our video of koala joey Imogen and Symbio foster parents (Kylie Elliott and Matt Radnidge, pictured) was Facebook’s No. 1 trending post in the world – WOW! In June, Imogen and her mother Kelly made headlines when we captured footage of her first journeys out of the pouch. But then the mother of a second,

much younger koala joey named Harry died unexpectedly.

To ensure both joeys had the best chances of survival, Kylie and Matt decided to hand-rear the older, stronger Imogen, and attempt to crosssurrogate Harry into Kelly’s pouch.

It worked. Kelly adopted Harry as her own, while Kylie and Matt (already a long-term couple) were fasttracked to parenthood, hand-rearing Imogen and taking her everywhere.

john vander Celebrate a local legend’s 70th birthday – and buy a great piece of art while you’re at it. 2508 reports.

To celebrate his 70th birthday, as well as 35 years in Stanwell Park, John Vander is exhibiting a collection of his paintings of some of the region’s fantastic landmarks and landscapes.

The exhibition, Where I Live, will be staged from Friday, October 16 to Sunday, November 8 at Articles Fine Art Gallery in Stanwell Park.

John and his wife Frances are well known in Sydney and the Illawarra region, as well as in national art circles.

“This small Solo Exhibition demonstrates his connection with the environment, always

looking for a new way to approach the subject,” according to promotional material about the event.

“Since the early 19th century the region has attracted many famous artists such as Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Lister Lister, James Jackson and John has strived to follow the footsteps of those Greats before him.

“Each painting captures a strong inspiration through John’s emotional attachment to the local landscape.”

He gave an interesting, informative talk about Lawrence Hargrave, the man who put Stanwell Park on the map as the place where he conducted his first experimental box-kite flying. His successful experiment began the journey that continued with the Wright Brothers in America inventing the first powered flight.

At the VIEW luncheon on 15 September, the speaker, Anne Turnbull from the Wildlife Information Rescue Service (WIRES), gave a detailed presentation with pictures of some of our native fauna in distress and those saved by the WIRES volunteers. WIRES is a free service, the third largest group of its kind in the world.

They rely solely on donations and are licensed

by the NPWS. They are a not-for-profit charity and donations are tax deductible. WIRES gets a subsidy for food, such as special milk powder for small animals. At the time of our meeting, Anne was caring for nine baby possums. If you find a native animal or bird in distress, keep it warm, in the dark and quiet. Throw a towel or sheet over it and call WIRES. Do not feed it.

REFUGEES CATER LUNCH

BY JENNY-LEE ROBINS Recently the Stanwell Park branch of the Northern Illawarra University of the Third Age celebrated its 9th Birthday with a delicious luncheon catered for by refugees from the Myanmar (formerly Burma) community.

Every year for the past four years we have featured food of refugees from different countries, including Ethiopia, Iraq and Myanmar. On speaking to the refugees, we have discovered some spent 15, 20 years or so in refugee camps waiting to receive refugee status to come to Australia.

This year’s luncheon was attended by 21 people and $200 was donated to local refugee organisation SCARF, who no longer receive any assistance from the government.

Stanwell Park’s U3A group meets on Mondays at 9.30am at Hillcrest House for a program of talks and music sessions. Visitors welcome. Anyone of

It is always reassuring to discover that “it’s a small world”.

In December 2008, I had hurried down to my neighbour Renée across the road in Maidstone Street to tell her that my husband Sid, myself, and youngest of six children, Jeremy aged 14, were going to live in a very remote and poverty-stricken part of Tanzania near a small village called Katoke to start a secondary school.

Renée’s response astounded me: “Katoke – that’s where my best friend Anitha grew up!”

And it was true. Anitha was the daughter of a missionary teacher, Alan Watson, who had gone to Katoke in the 1960s, before Independence.

When he returned in the 1990s, he discovered a shocking descent into poverty.

Aids, malaria, corrupt bureaucracy, and a failed attempt at socialism had left the region in economic and social ruin. Alan, as a Christian, went to his friends, his church, his work colleagues, and formed the Katoke Trust to help people out of the cycle of poverty, so they could enjoy things we take for granted: food, shelter, clean water, health.

The Trust began by making mosquito nets available (malaria is a killer there). A dispensary was built so villagers could access health care, cash crops were introduced (vanilla), a handicraft centre was built, but the final ambitious project, with the greatest potential to empower, was to be the establishment of Katoke-Lweru Secondary School (K-LSS) in 2009.

Sid was to be founding headmaster, starting the school from scratch. I became “mother” to the students, especially the boarders.

So our very ordinary life took a sudden dramatic turn. Now, six years later, we have

returned to the ’Burgh, leaving our hearts with community where we lived, loved and were loved. K-LSS now has 470 students, of whom more than 430 are boarders, many of them orphans and impoverished village children who, without Australian sponsors, would never have had the privilege of an education.

Having completed four years of secondary schooling, many have gone on to do vocational training (like TAFE) and, instead of being destined to stay in their village as subsistence farmers, are going out as teachers, medical workers, welders, office workers, etc. Others are continuing into their fifth and sixth years at our secondary school, intending to proceed to tertiary education.

Another way to assist is to collect car batteries and aluminium cans. Designated bins are at Coles, Helensburgh Anglican and Stanwell Park Anglican churches as collection points for bags of aluminium cans. Car batteries can be left at Sid and Marilyn’s place (ring 4294 2465 to let us know you are coming). Money raised will be used to help the vulnerable.

Who knew learning could be so much fun?

Helensburgh Public School celebrated Book Week recently with a dress-up day and book parade. Children and teachers dressed as their favourite book characters, with a huge array of characters on display.

The dress ups and book celebrations continued at our Grandparent’s Day, with each class performing an item for their grandparents before giving them a tour of their classrooms and visiting the library for a book fair. It was a great day for everyone.

The craziness continued as the term came to an end with our Wacky Walkathon. It was a fun

In the last edition of 2508 it was announced that the men at Helensburgh Public School would be taking part in the Polished Man Campaign.

This year Polished Man has gone global and as a result the dates for the campaign have been changed. The teachers will be polishing one nail on each hand to raise money and awareness to help end violence against children from October 1 to 15.

Keith Tomlinson, Stanwell Park Public School Principal, has left work to take long-service leave before he retires. Here’s an excerpt from his farewell speech.

By Sarah Overington Laughter and little footsteps can be heard every Tuesday through the doors of Helensburgh Community Centre where a playgroup has been meeting in this same location for more than 30 years.

When I first moved to Helensburgh, I didn’t know anyone in the area. Having had my children overseas, I wasn’t part of a mothers’ group or similar network. During a call to Helensburgh Community Centre, I was pointed in the direction of playgroup. On our first visit, we were introduced to friendly people from all over the 2508 area. We were welcomed into a supportive group, helping us settle into our new home.

Playgroup is a great community service that gives caregivers the chance to grab a cuppa while the kids enjoy playing in an engaging and stimulating space. Everyone is welcome.

In a busy and expensive world, it’s often hard to find local and affordable experiences for children, however, thanks to this quality service, the search is over.

Helensburgh playgroup has fluctuated in attendance over the years. Sadly it has gone from two days a week to only one. Now, thanks to a devoted group of volunteers and the experience of a qualified early childhood educator, playgroup is being revamped and will hopefully be running at full strength again.

Held in the Community Centre’s gymnasium, there’s plenty of space for kids to run around, ride trikes, engage in sensory play or put their imagination into creating something crafty.

Held every Tuesday from 10am-noon during school terms, the group is Playgroup NSW Inc. registered and caters to all ages, from babies to preschool children. For 2508’s photoshoot, Clare, a Helensburgh reflexologist who sells mindful gifts and jewellery, has invited two local mums, Karen Gander and Nicky Lewis, over for tea and colouring in on her verandah.

“I find it relaxing,” says Karen, who has unearthed her 20-year-old Derwent pencils to shade in the soothing swirls of Indian Summer.

“I’ve always loved colour, even though I’m not artistic myself, so it’s my vent.”

“I’ve got the Mandala ones,” Clare says.

“Carl Jung used them in his work. He got his clients to colour in the mandala for relaxation.”

Nicky, whose children are aged five and two, says it’s a great way to zone out.

“It’s time for yourself, which is really important as a mum. It just relaxes me. Your mind is concentrating on what you’re actually doing, rather than 10,000 other things. Before I know it an hour’s gone by.”

What will she do when the book’s full?

“Buy another one!” Nicky laughs.

When Wollongong Olympic scored against Helensburgh in the first seven minutes of their grand final, the Burgh players knew they had their work cut out for them.

Helensburgh rallied, fighting hard to prevent any more goal attempts by Olympic during the September 13 clash at Kiama Sporting Complex.

A penalty shootout would determine the grand final winner. Helensburgh’s keeper Amy Deverson had her work cut out for her with some pinpoint shots from Olympic, but Helensburgh matched those shots. Two good saves by Amy put the pressure back onto Olympic’s keeper. Jacobi Kitchen-Gurney slotted the winning goal to seal the 4-3 victory for Helensburgh.

For most players it was their second grand Wayne Teal 0408 776 099 final victory after winning Div 3 last year, so to Specialists in all aspects of back it up in Div 2 was a great achievement.

Tradies social golf Barry Thompson returns to tradies Helensburgh Social Golf Club in time for spring.

Tell Jason Day that my return to golf will not jeopardise his ranking. Even though Genghis Khan (aka Carroll the Cruel) didn’t take many liberties with my handicap during my absence. I still came stone-cold motherless last in our September tournament. At least I won a ball.

Dave Astill mastered a wet track to take the Parrino’s Pizzas first placing. The ever-popular Sparrow King came in second; Rod Vaughan was third. Geoff Hammonds will benefit from winning the Helensburgh Driving Range voucher (or at least we hope Geoff.)

Our club has lost a staunch member and friend with the passing of Bob Britten.

Bob was close enough to being a founding member and held just about every committee position in his service to our club. He will be remembered for his skills in organising the charity events and family days that were once part of our calendar.

He enjoyed his golf and was active in both our club and Russell Vale competitions until illness prevented his participation.

He will be especially missed by we older members who enjoyed his friendship over many years.

Our thoughts and sympathy are extended to Wendy and family. the cold to Tradies for the presentation. Great to see a smattering of new faces among the old familiars; it augers well for the future.

Our next outing is on Saturday, October 17 at Boomerang. Tee Off is at 7am. If you are new to town and enjoy golf at any level, come and join us, just turn up early and introduce yourself.

Helensburgh is still celebrating after the town’s much-loved Tigers ended a 22-year stretch between premierships with a 16-10 grand final win over Wests last month.

The Illawarra Coal League grand final victory at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium on Sunday, September 13 capped off a great season for the Tigers and, in true Helensburgh fashion, their supporters stormed the field at full time to congratulate their heroes – but the footy fairytale didn’t end there.

On September 19 at the Illawarra Coal League Awards night at Dapto Leagues Club, the 2015 grand final Man of the Match, the Tigers’ Grant Smith, won the Paul McGregor Medal (Men’s Player of the Year) as well as the George Grofus trophy for best forward. This season was the former halfback’s first full stint in the forward pack.

In a wonderful night for Helensburgh league players, Tigerlillies star Erin Blackwell was named Women’s Player of the Year.

The Tigers also scooped Most Tries 1st Grade, Minor Premiership 1st Grade, and the Club Championship. 2508
